Voting season has ended, but my hidden reviews are still hidden. Is this a technical problem or did I do something wrong?

Question about my last review Posted by raksha022002 January 01, 2012 - 8:38:57 Topic ID# 11083I wrote my last review shortly before the end of voting yesterday. I'm pretty sure I made it Final, but I suppose it is possible I mistakenly used the Hidden status. It has only just appeared and is dated January 1, 2012 - will it be counted?
Hi Annette,
Sorry about that. That was an error on my part (in the site code). I have
changed Hidden reviews to Final now.

There were some bugs in the ending of the awards that were entirely my
fault (in the site code), so don't worry about your reviews. If your review
is showing up as Final, it will be counted.
Thanks,

Hi Kaylee,
There was a bug in the site that had removed the Review Reply function, but I've fixed that. You can go to the Reviews menu, then Reviews Received to get a list of your reviews, and each will have a link to enter a reply. (Please let me know if it still isn't working).
You will be able to reply to reviews up until we switch the site over to the 2012 awards (sometime this spring).

Privacy of Review Replies? Posted by raksha022002 January 02, 2012 - 12:29:07 Topic ID# 11089I had thought that the review replies could only be seen by the author and the reviewer of the particular story. But since voting ended, I am seeing some replies to other authors by other reviewers; and I am not certain that this is what was intended. I have double-checked two different sub-cats; and saw review replies by other reviewers to two different authors other than myself. I also asked another MEFA author to check the same sub-cats and she also saw review replies to other authors. It's not every single review in the sub-cat; but there are a few.
Perhaps next year I will try to do review replies outside the MEFA site; or just do generic Thank-yous on-site.

Re: Privacy of Review Replies? Posted by Aranel January 02, 2012 - 14:11:33 Topic ID# 11089Hi Raksha,
Sorry about the confusion over review replies. Replies did become publicly available at the end of the awards, but the instructions on the reply page didn't explain that. That text was updated last week when another member asked about it.
If you would like me to remove any of your replies so that you can send them privately instead, please email me at tech@mefawards.org with a list of the reviews, specifically the story title and review ID (you can find that in the first column of the review listing). Also, please give me the first couple words of the reply you want removed so that I'm absolutely sure I'm removing the correct one. I will be permanently deleting them, so (if needed) you should make a copy of the replies before sending me your list.

Re: Privacy of Review Replies? Posted by Marta January 02, 2012 - 14:13:45 Topic ID# 11089Hi Raksha,
I'm sorry for any confusion going on here.
The reply feature is new this year, and it came out of two issues:
first, Aranel and I wanted to streamline the way that authors reply to
their reviewers so we didn't need someone to forward each reply by hand;
but also we had some suggestions by a member that she wanted a way to
publicly reply to her review. There's a bit of an uneven power dynamic
between the reviewer and the author. The reviewer could leave a review
about a story that was (in the author's opinion) unfairly critical or
simply misunderstood the story, and the author either had to leave the
review unanswered or else ask to have the review completely taken down
and lose the points (which we wouldn't do anyway unless it was a flame).
The thinking was that the current feature would address both problems.
Now, it's a new feature so it may *not* do both things. Or the way we
presented it may be confusing. We can work to fix that. If it's a simple
matter of people not understanding how the reply works, maybe we can add
some instructions or an FAQ that would help with that. If you don't like
the way the reply works, I'd be happy to consider changing it, during
the PM in a few weeks. Please drop a suggestion at
http://mefas.livejournal.com/266431.html, or email me privately if you
want to discuss it further.
But there's also the immediate problem. Are there replies you (or
others) only meant to send to the authors? Email me privately
(martaDOTfandomATgmailDOTcom) and I'll do what I can to correct the
situation. I can probably take down the review, and I also will be happy
to forward on your reply privately, assuming it's not a full-out attack
or something else that it's inappropriate for me to forward on officially.
Very sorry for any miscommunication, frustration, etc. I appreciate
yours and everyone's patience as we work out how to use this new feature
so it works well for everyone.

Thanks for your opinions. I'm glad you like it. Aranel and I are
discussing how we can handle this situation better next year. There's

are pretty busy right now, but we will keep anyone's suggestions in mind

Posted by Ellin Ithilwen January 03, 2012 - 4:24:33 Topic ID# 11089I agree with curiouswombat and dreamflower, it's nice to see the reviews on the site, just like on some archives. But as for the comparison with the archives, I have one more question. On the archives, when the author replies to the review, the reviewer gets an email with the notification about reply; would it be possible here on MEFA? I would really love it.

[ADMIN] a big THANK YOU to the 2011 Volunteers Posted by aure\_enteluva January 03, 2012 - 18:15:08 Topic ID# 11096Hey guys,
Voting for the Middle-earth Fanfiction Awards ended a few days ago, and I've told all the competing authors who received awards, what awards they received. You may have already seen blog posts or other notes from authors sharing their results. I'll be announcing the full results later tonight, but before we get there I did want to thank our many volunteers. People often thank me at the end of these awards, since I'm the one making the announcements and handing out good news to authors. But the MEFAs are really and truly a team effort, and I want to give a HEAR, HEAR! (hear what?) to some of our most invaluable volunteers.
First and foremost is Aranel Took. She wrote this year's website from scratch. She also handles a hundred routine technical things, helps members who have a hard time with the awards, and on top of that helps me sort through policy issues and generally keeps me sane. That last point alone is more than enough of a contribution to these awards *g*. I would be offering her miruvor and choco-lembas right about now if such things existed, but as reality is, my heartfelt thanks will have to suffice.
I'd also like to thank everyone who used our awards. I'm thinking specifically of reviewers, since as an author I've been enjoying reading all those reviews the last few days. But our nominators and authors are key, too, since there wouldn't be any stories to review without it. Thank you, all of you.
Other key volunteers:
1. The CATEGORIZERS helped sort all the nominations into the groups they would compete in, and even after that was over helped me work through issues that came up. Thanks to Elliska, Inkling, Dreamflower, and Linaewen. (I was also a categorizer.) They also all took on special projects, along with Tanaqui and Aranel.
2. Elliska served as our USER MANAGER. She's the one who sets up accounts for everyone, and who also checks to make sure they don't already have accounts under a different name.
3. Levade POSTED REVIEWS to LJ and an email listserv, so people could see them without logging in to our website. Thanks for all the effort!
3. The PROMOTERS made announcements about the MEFAs at other listservs and websites, helping to get the word out beyond our circle. Thanks to Branwyn, Cathleen, Dreamflower, Dwimordene, Ellie, Larner, Lissas Elves, and obsidian.
4. The AUTHOR LIAISONS worked with authors to get their stories ready to compete, which of course helped everyone use the website effectively. (Like being able to pull up all the stories set in Doriath, or the friendship fics? These volunteers make that possible.) Thanks to Adonnen Estenniel, Angelica, Dreamflower, Elliska, Fiondil, Foxrafer, Inkling, Linaewen, and Maethril.
5. BANNERS were made (and will still be customized) by our banner creators: Elena Tiriel, Elleth, Ellynn, Esteliel, Maethril, and Nath.
6. The RATINGS PANEL looked over stories where the author wasn't sure what rating to give them, or where readers thought the rating might be inappropriate. That meant reading stories, often quite long ones, and looking at them objectively to see whether they fit into our ratings scheme and where. Thanks to Maethril, NeumeIndil, Oshun, Sulriel, and The Lauderdale.
I am sure there are other people who helped out as well. If I have forgotten to mention you, that's only because you do your task so well I don't notice there's a problem. Whatever the capacity, I really appreciate everyone's help this year.

MEFA Admin.
I just love the little dragon of the MEFA results page.
I was wondering if it would be possible to have a small dragon graphic that Smaug's Treasure winners could display as well as other banners or add to them if they are good with graphics? Just a thought.
A big thank to everyone who has worked so hard to make the awards a success.

Hi Linda,
Glad you like Little Smaug. ;-)
There will be some Smaug's Treasure banners available on the banner site
soon.
If you would like the dragon graphic from the site, email me (
araneltook@gmail.com) and I can send you a better quality image for working
with. If you want to work from scratch, I created the graphic from a dragon
image in this free font: http://www.dafont.com/mediaeval-bats.font

You may have already seen blog posts or other notes from authors sharing their results. I'll be announcing the full results later tonight, but before we get there I did want to thank our many volunteers. People often thank me at the end of these awards, since I'm the one making the announcements and handing out good news to authors. But the MEFAs are really and truly a team effort, and I want to give a HEAR, HEAR! (hear what?) to some of our most invaluable volunteers.

I would be offering her miruvor and choco-lembas right about now if such things existed, but as reality is, my heartfelt thanks will have to suffice.

Hi Ellyn,
Do whatever you like with any of the graphics I put on the site. Just email
me if you want to use something, and I can get you either a larger and/or
higher quality .png, the Photoshop file I work from, or the source
material.

It's not the problem for me to work with the graphic, but this whole thing with Smaug's treasure banners is confusing me. *What* is the right thing to be done? I've made the whole set of banners (all 70-and-something categories) with the inscription "Smaug's treasure", but that doesn't seem to be the right thing. What should I (we) do? Add the dragon-icon to "normal" banners (those with inscriptions 1st, 2nd 3rd place and HM)? Or...?

Hi Ellyn,
Smaug's Treasure is a general award, like Commended Reviewer. It's not by
category.
You don't have to use the icon from the site. That's just something I did
to jazz up the place. You can use it if you like, or do whatever kind of
banner you want to do.
If someone wanted, I suppose you could add the dragon icon to their
existing 1st/2nd/3rd/HM banner as part of customization, too. Then they
could have both on one banner. But that would be up to the individual
story. Not every story with a placing necessarily gets a Smaug, and you can
get a Smaug without getting a placing.
Marta can probably clarify this better, so you should probably contact her
about this.

[ADMIN] And the Winners Are... Posted by aure\_enteluva January 04, 2012 - 9:38:48 Topic ID# 11106Hey guys,
As promised, here's the results of the 2011 Middle-earth Fanfiction Awards.
Mostly, they're self-explanatory. Stories in each subcategory are ranked according to the number of points they earned. In larger subcategories, we also assigned Honorable Mentions, based on the size of the subcategory. But there is one thing that deserves a word or two: the Smaug's Treasures stories.
Since some subcategories are more competitive than others, a piece that would have won a less competitive category may not have ranked at all. In light of that, we introduced a new award this year called Smaug's Treasure. If a piece ranks in the top third of all nominations - compared to *all* the nominations, not just what's in its subcategory - it gets a Smaug's Treasure. This is given alongside the awards it won within its subcategory, and it's the author's choice which award they want to say they won. Whichever they prefer, it's their choice. Those pieces are marked with an asterisk.
So, without further adieu...
The following reviewers reached their reviewing goals.

P.S. The results are also available at the MEFA website. Go to http://www.mefawards.org/, and just click on "The 2011 MEFAs are over. See the results." From there you can find links to the nominations, summaries and other information, and read peoples' reviews by clicking the "Info" link beside each nomination.
The website version is the "official" results, and this listing is provided for your convenience. If you notice any omissions or mistakes, email me privately (marta.fandomATgmailDOTcom) and I will look into it, and edit the LJ version of this post if needed.

[ADMIN] missing commended reviewers Posted by aure\_enteluva January 04, 2012 - 11:16:36 Topic ID# 11107Hey guys,
We had to send the Rangers out after some missing commended reviewers - people who had met their reviewing goal but for some reason Aranel is *still* ferreting out didn't get credit on the mefawards.org website or my list posted here. So a special congratulations to:
grey_gazania
Himring
Striderette
I will go ahead and edit the mefas LJ post as well, to give you credit there as well. Nice work, guys!

Re: [ADMIN] a big THANK YOU to the 2011 Volunteers Posted by Bonnie L. Sherrell January 04, 2012 - 12:59:56 Topic ID# 11096And I wanted to thank everyone who was able to do what I couldn't this year, and
read most of the stories and commented on them. With new bosses and schedules,
I've been much restricted this year. It was a pleasure to take part in the
awards in 2011.

Hi Ellynn,
I'm sorry for all of the confusion on this; I should really have talked
to you about this last week when I was looking over your banners, but I
didn't want to make more work for you than you'd already done.
Smaug's Treasures are not, strictly speaking, an award of a certain
subcategory. A piece gets a Smaug's Treasure if it ranks in the top
third of all the nominations. This year, that meant it got thirty-six
points or more. The exact amount will change from year to year, but what
WON'T change is that it has nothing to do with how many points the other
stories in its subcategory got. Now, it looks a lot like a subcategory
award because that's how we report the results for everything else. But
it's not strictly accurate to say such-and-such an award got a Smaug's
Treasure award in (say) Hobbits: Bagginses. The Smaug's Treasure award
isn't *in* any category.
I don't have a problem with Smaug's Treasure banners listing the
subcategory. All stories have a subcategory after all, and some people
might prefer that kind of banner. But it's certainly not required.

Hey guys,
Just a few last ends about the 2011 MEFAs.
1. BANNERS
If you won an award, you may use one of the ones that already have
subcategory/award information, or you may request that a banner be
customized for you. If you'd like to have a banner customized for you,
please ask at
http://mefa-banners.livejournal.com/11253.html
Remember, you have until January 15 (Sunday) to get your requests in, so
please go ahead and work on that. And if you have questions, please
email me at mefasupportATgmailDOTcom.
2. POST-MORTEM
As always, we try to improve the MEFAs every year. If you have general
topics you'd like to discuss, please feel free to email me at
mefasupportATgmailDOTcom. If you have specific suggestions you can make
them at
http://mefas.livejournal.com/266431.html
Ideally I'd like to start discussing them next week. So if at all
possible, please try to get them to me by January 15 (Sunday). If you
really don't have time to write them out by then I'll accept suggestions
through the following weekend, January 22. We gladly take suggestions
both on how the site functions but also on our policies and other things
you think could be improved on.
