ADMIN - Last Call to Join Up Posted by Marta December 02, 2010 - 21:13:48 Topic ID# 10792
Hey guys,

The 2010 awards end in approximately two weeks, on December 15. There's
still time to get some votes in, and I encourage you to do that. But before
you can vote, you need an account at our site. So this week I'd like to talk
about different types of accounts, and how you get them set up.

***************************************

WHAT TYPES OF ACCOUNTS ARE THERE? HOW DO I GET ONE?

There are two main types of accounts:

==> author accounts
These last for one year. They are set up automatically for you whenever your
story is nominated.

==> permanent accounts (sometimes called MEFAwards accounts)
These last from year to year. To get one, you must first join the MEFAwards
Yahoo group. You will then be sent a questionnaire. When you answer that, a
volunteer will check that you don't already have an account. You will then
be sent a password and username by our volunteer - usually within
twenty-four hours of receiving your questionnaire.

*********************************************

WHAT CAN THESE ACCOUNTS DO?

Author accounts can vote for stories by other people, and can use site
functions like the story list, wish and skip lists. They can also reply to
the reviews written for their stories.

Permanent accounts can do everything that author accounts can do, but during
the nominations portion of the awards they can also nominate stories.

Some volunteers receive a second account to help them do their work for the
awards, for technical reasons. However, these votes cannot nominate or vote
for stories.

********************************************

WHY DO I HAVE TO JOIN A YAHOO GROUP TO GET A PERMANENT ACCOUNT?

We need to occasionally make announcements that we know everyone will
receive. The easiest way to do that is by email. That is why we require
everyone to join the Yahoo group [MEFAwards], to facilitate this. Also, it
helps us to make sure everyone involved only has one account at our website.

Your Yahoo username and password are not tied to your account information at
our website. You may, if you choose to, make the two passwords match; but if
you change one it will not automatically change the other. While you have to
be a member of the Yahoo group, you cannot use that information to log in to
our website before your account has been set up.

**********************************************

HELP! I CAN'T LOG IN

If you have logged in before and just can't access your account, go to
http://www.mefawards.net/MEFA2010/ and click the "Forgotten Password?" link.
This will take you to a form you can use to have your password automatically
sent to the email address you are registered with.

New MEFAwards members: If you do not receive a password within 2-3 days of
sending in your questionnaire, email me at mefasupportATmefawardsDOTnet. I
will reply back with your password. Preferably, you should email me from the
email address you are registered with.

Authors from Previous Years: If you were nominated in 2009 or before, and if
you never joined the [MEFAwards] Yahoo group, then your account was deleted
at the end of the year when your story was nominated.

==> If you were re-nominated in 2010: you have a new author's account, but
with a different password than you had in previous years. You should have
used this password to tell us about your story. If you don't remember it,
request it using the same methods described above under "If you have logged
in before."

==> If you were *not* re-nominated in 2010, you no longer have an account.
You can vote for stories if you join the MEFAwards Yahoo group, once your
new account is set up.

****************************************

P.S. - Remember, all reviews must be entered into the
mefawards.net/MEFA2010/ website BY DECEMBER 15, at 11:59 PM GMT. Note that
this is *not* in your local time zone.

P.P.S. - If you have draft reviews and you want them counted, remember to
change them to hidden or final status by that same deadline. More on that
next week.

P.P.P.S. - Annmarwalk is sending out the reviews by email, using the
[mefa-reviews] Yahoo group and the [mefas] LJ community if you want to read
them using your friends' list.

*******************************************

Happy reviewing,

Marta

email hackery Posted by Marta December 03, 2010 - 18:26:10 Topic ID# 10793
Hey guys,

Yesterday an old email address of mine was hacked, allowing someone to send
out spam messages to everyone in my contacts list. In gmail, that includes
pretty much everyone I've ever sent a message to. Back in 2006-2007ish, this
was the only email address I had - so I used it for MEFA-related emails as
well as other fandom stuff and messages to all sorts of RL people.

Bottom line: some of you may have received an email message that looked like
it was from me but that only contained some badly-worded spam directing you
to a website. It would have had a subject like "Dear Friends: lkolk.X" (the
last initial might vary), and it would have been sent yesterday Dec-02 at
around 4-5 PM EST.

I have tracked the problem down to someone accessing my email address from
an IP address in China. I poked around last night and it seems I'm not the
only one this has happened to in the last few days. I've taken security
steps to keep this from happening again (I hope!), and also run an antivirus
scan. So far, it looks like neither my computer nor the message itself
contains a virus, though clicking on the link in the email would probably be
a bad idea!

I sincerely apologize for any worry or just plain annoyance this caused.
Rest assured, I didn't mean to send out the email and will do what I can to
make sure it doesn't happen again.

Marta

Hi, Marta and everyone at the MEFAs. I really would like to get some votes
in, but my adoption journey is finally coming to fruition. In fact, I'm
leaving for Poland in 2 days! And I'll be gone for 6 weeks. But I'm glad
to see the MEFAs are still alive and well. Keep up the good work!

ADMIN - last minute reminders Posted by Marta December 12, 2010 - 21:51:09 Topic ID# 10795
Hey guys,

With the end of the 2010 awards just a few days off, this will be a light
post. I want you to spend your time reading stories rather than reading
announcements. Mainly, I just wanted to remind everyone of two things:

****************************************

VOTING ENDS ON DECEMBER 15

The last day you can vote for the MEFAs is Wednesday, December 15. If you
want to enter any reviews, you must enter them by 11:59 PM on that day.

Remember: The MEFA time zone is based on GMT (Greenwich Mean Time). This is
*not* your local time zone. To figure out when voting ends in your deadline,
simply reload any MEFA webpage and look for the "Page Served at:" line in
the bottom right corner. This displays the time when that webpage was last
loaded. You can see how many hours ahead of or behind this time is of your
local time, and use that to calculate what time in your local time zone
corresponds to the end of the awards.

*****************************************

CHANGE OVER YOUR DRAFT REVIEWS

If you have entered a draft review, you must change it to a hidden or final
review by the end of voting. Otherwise it will not be counted.

To review:

1. FINAL reviews are displayed and counted immediately, and cannot be edited
after you submit them.
2. HIDDEN reviews are automatically converted to final reviews at the end of
the awards. They will be displayed and counted at that point. They can be
edited up until then.
3. DRAFT reviews are never counted or displayed, unless they are changed to
some other type.

Only final and hidden reviews count toward your reviewing goal, if you set
one.

To change a review's status:

==> Log in to www.mefawards.net/MEFA2010/
==> Click the "Stories" link at the top of the page.
==> Click the link to display the filter.
==> Select "All Reviews" from the "Review Status" menu.
==> Click the "Display Selected Nominations" button.
==> Click the "Edit Review" link to the right of the appropriate story.
==> Change the Review Status to whatever you want.
==> Click "Save Validated Review."

The page you see when logging in will load, but this time with a green par
saying your review has been saved. When that happens you can rest assured
your review has the new status you want.

*******************************

And that's it! Happy reviewing, and I'll see you all on the other side.

Marta

quick reminder - voting ends TODAY Posted by Marta December 15, 2010 - 7:02:26 Topic ID# 10796
Hey guys,

By way of a quick reminder:

Today, DECEMBER 15, is the last day to vote for the 2010 MEFAs. At this
moment it is 1:00:09 PM GMT, which means you have just under eleven hours
left to write any reviews, or convert draft reviews to final.

For reference, it is currently 8 AM, where I live, on the U.S. East coast.
That means voting will end for me at 7 PM tonight - NOT at midnight. If that
reference is more useful...

See you on the other side. :-)

Hi mvoltfan,

Sorry to hear you got caught by the buzzer. That happens to at least one
person every year.

The good news is, the story is still out there, and I'm sure the author
would love your review at whatever archive the story is posted to. Just
because the 2010 MEFAs are over, that doesn't mean the reviewing has to
stop.

ADMIN - 2010 awards - tying up loose ends, and looking forward Posted by Marta December 15, 2010 - 20:26:31 Topic ID# 10799
Hey guys,

The voting for the 2010 awards ended about an hour ago. If you are like me,
you could have used at least another week in the awards, or possibly even
another month.

The good news, as I just mentioned to another member is that while the MEFAs
are over for this year, fandom doesn't stop. Those stories you didn't quite
get to, they're still posted somewhere. You can review the story at those
other sites. And the MEFA2010 website will still be accessible for a few
more months. You can't enter reviews at our site, but you can still pull up
your wish list or otherwise keep using our story listings. Just leave a
review at those other sites, for those stories you didn't quite have time to
review. It's a good way to stay involved in fandom, and to recognize quality
fic.

Over the next few days I will contact those authors who received a first,
second, or third-place award or an honorable mention. I'll also announce the
full results here on the 18th.

In the meantime, here are some MEFA-related things to think about with the
end of the awards.

*********************************************

HAVE YOU HUGGED A MEFA VOLUNTEER TODAY?

The MEFAs really is a team effort. While I make the announcements and try to
make sure everything that needs to get done actually does get done, but I
really see myself more as a facilitator than anything - other people do the
lions' share of the work.

For a full share of volunteers see
http://www.mefawards.net/MEFA2010/index.php?page=FAQvolunteers

I will just mention a few that have taken on special projects and really
stand out for their quiet commitment to doing the behind-the-scenes work.

==> ARANEL has been developing a new website for 2011. She also has done
some other innovative technical projects that make the awards run much more
smoothly.

==> While she works on that, TANAQUI has kept the 2010 website running
smoothly. Including dealing with my half-frantic "oh, we said we would do
that thing, didn't we, and it really needed to be coded a week ago" emails.
Aranel's put in a lot of work there, too.

If you enjoyed a new feature of the website, you have these two ladies to
thank. And I hope you *do* thank them - they deserve it.

==> ELLISKA approves memberships. This is a huge task and is crucial to the
awards, to make sure everyone has just one account and so can only vote once
for each story.

==> As always, INKLING and RADBOOKS have taken on a wide range of projects.
They've also been great helps in discussing policy questions, and generally
have always been willing to do what needs doing.

==> FOXRAFER forwards on all the responses authors send to people who write
their reviews. This lets authors reply to reviews and at the same time does
a good job of keeping members' email addresses as private as we can.

==> ANNMARWALK takes the reviews from the website and posts them to a LJ
community and Yahoo group. This helps people stay in contact with just what
reviews have been written - a very useful contribution.

==> NEUME INDIL served as banner coordinator, making sure that the banners
portion of the awards ran smoothly.

==> Thanks also to all the artists who made banners for this year's awards:
ELENA TIRIEL, ELLETH, ELLYNN ITHILWEN, NATH, RED LASBELIN, and THEVINA
FINDUILAS.

This is in addition to the small armies of promoters, liaisons,
categorizers, and other volunteers who took on ad hoc projects when asked.
And of course everyone who nominated or voted on stories - you're all
indispensable in my book. As I said, there are simply too many to thank them
all individually. That does not mean I am not appreciative of the work they
did.

*******************************
WHAT HAPPENS NOW

Over the next few days I will be contacting the authors who won an award of
any kind. Hopefully by Saturday or Sunday, I will post the full awards to
this list.

Authors can also read their reviews at the website and looking over the
banners, to see which banner they would like customized (if applicable).
Everyone can start thinking about what changes they would like to see happen
for the 2011 awards.

*******************************
READING AND REPLYING TO REVIEWS

All of the 2010 reviews are available at our website. Just visit
www.mefawards.net/MEFA2010/ , log in, and click the "reviews" list at the
top of the page. You can read all the reviews, or filter by the story author
to find just reviews written for your story. This can be a welcome treat for
all authors, and a good way to find recommendations for new stories you
might want to read.

Authors, you can also send a reply to your reviewers if you want to do so.
Just click the "Reply to Review" link by any of the reviews for your
stories. This will open up a pop-up window with more instructions.

BUT, please send replies by December 31 - a little over two weeks off.
Replies have to be forwarded by a real flesh-and-blood volunteer, and she
will stop her volunteer work around that time. Replies will still be sent,
but it won't happen until the reviews for the 2011 awards start showing up -
usually some time in the late summer. You can also contact your reviewers
using other methods, if you know them from other sites.

************************
BANNERS

This year, winning authors can either use pre-made banners (already
tailor-made to each category/sub-category/place combination), or you can ask
to have one of our banner artists customizie a banner for you. For more
information on banners, see

http://community.livejournal.com/mefas/257523.html

Important note - you will need to get your request in before December 31, if
you'd like a banner maker to help you customize a banner. After that, we may
not be able to help you customize the banners than can be used for any of a
variety of categories. (You can still customize them yourselves, or find
someone else to do that, if you'd like.) There are also banners for
nominated stories that don't win an actual prize, and for people who reached
their reviewing goal. Check those out if you haven't already.

*************************
POST-MORTEM

It's never too early to start thinking about how we can do things
differently. If you have a suggestion for how the awards might improve in
the future, please make it using

http://community.livejournal.com/mefas/193869.html

I know, I know, it's party time right now. You may not want to think about
criticisms. That's fine. But if you have anything you'd like for us to
consider, please do get the request in by January 15. And you may want to
stick to procedural stuff rather than the technical. The 2011 site will be
pretty different from the 2010 site, and I imagine a lot of your technical
suggestions may not reply.

******************************

Thanks so much to every one who reviewed! And to all the authors who shared
their work with us. It was a great awards season, and it wouldn't have
happened without you.

Many thanks to the volunteers who checked web forms, helped those who needed help with technology or other questions, posted reviews, passed along reviews, served on the ratings panel, or kept the website running smoothly!

Last year, I thought I'd get through all my thank-you cards, but failed. So this year, let me just say "thank you" to all those who reviewed one of my stories - I do intend to write a more personalized thank you card, but I know how far intentions got me last year (exactly halfway through that list) and don't want to give the impression that I didn't appreciate your taking the time to comment.

And thanks to those who reviewed in general - it's fun to read comments, and sometimes another reviewer's comments moved me to go read a story whose summary might not have grabbed me otherwise.

Happy holidays to all!

I'd like to add my thanks as well, and a special THANK YOU to Marta, who
works so terribly hard keeping the whole freight train on the track! I've
no idea how she manages to do that!

I too never managed to get all the way through my "thank yous" last year! I
hope to do better this year! But thank you anyway, to everyone who
reviewed! And not just those who reviewed my stories, but for all the
reviews, which have been so much fun to read!

Hi there!

I think our MEFA volunteer team is the best group of folks in fandom to have made this year's awards go so very smoothly. This is a huge project, and I'm always amazed at how well things go. You all deserve a huge round of applause for all you do and all you have done. Take a bow!!

Last year, I didn't get through my thank-you cards either - BAD Aeärwen! So, just in case this year turns out the same way, please allow me to thank everyone who reviewed one of my stories. Your kind words were very much appreciated, as was the time you took in reading them to begin with. I don't want anybody to think that I'm not thrilled with each and every review, because I *am*!!

And thank you to all our reviewers. There was a wealth of real quality writing to choose from this year, and the number of reviews trickling into my inbox everyday was a real treat to browse. Sometimes those comments made me want to go take a peek at a story I hadn't marked before, and I found some real gems I might have overlooked.

I hope everyone has a great holiday season, and may our MEFA admins now get a chance to sit back and take a deep breath and relax. You all did good!

Cuio mae.

A most enjoyable year, and thanks particularly to Marta for her work and to
Foxrafer as my liaison this year. Both are outstanding!

Thanks Tanaqui for putting those together! It's interesting-just on superficial inspection we've not fallen off that much, though I was a bad girl this year and only got through about a third of the stories I wanted to review.

The one stat that I did look at was review length. Before this year, the average review never was worth more than five points (at least since we started doing the stats in 2006). We have had some very effusive new members, but also I think across the board people are writing longer reviews than they once did. That makes the instructor in me happy, totally aside from all the other reasons I am proud of our reviewers.

(Yes, I am one of those numbers hounds I referred to. *g*)

MEFA 2010 Results Posted by Marta December 18, 2010 - 8:16:18 Topic ID# 10810
Hey guys,

Below are the results for the 2010 MEFAs.

As most of you know, people vote for MEFA stories by writing reviews of
varying lengths. Our website then converts these reviews to point values,
based solely on the review's length. These point values are added up, and in
each subcategory the highest three ranking stories get first, second, and
third place. We then hand out honorable mentions to round out the awards, so
that at least half of the stories in each subcategory will be recognized.
This is in recognition of the fact that in a larger subcategory, there may
be more competition for those top spots.

These results always recognize some really high-quality reads. They also
leave off some worthwhile stories, for a wide variety of reasons. (If you
are looking for good reads, I encourage you to check out the reviews on our
website - 4,362 recommendations, just waiting to point you to a fun new
read.) But even with that caveat, I think our rankings do a very nice job of
identifying stories that are worth your time. Praise them, with great
praise!

(P.S. - You can also find these results at our website. There, you can find
links to the stories and to the reviews people have written for them.)

Hi Ellynn,

Thanks for catching those. I will correct the mistakes over at LJ as soon as I am at an internet-connected computer - probably tonight. My apologies to the affected authors; it wasn't intentional!

Don't worry, Marta, we all know it wasn't intentional! It is normal to make mistakes, especially in such a huge job. ;) *hugs*

hidden review? Posted by Jean December 18, 2010 - 14:10:39 Topic ID# 10816
I still have a review that I wrote showing as "hidden". If someone else has already asked about this, apologies.

Will that review eventually come to light?

Thanks,
Lin

Re: hidden review? Posted by Tanaqui December 18, 2010 - 14:18:02 Topic ID# 10816
Hi Lin

At the end of voting season, all the "hidden" reviews are automatically
made visible, as if they were "final" reviews, even though they're still
tagged as "hidden" in the system. (Only "draft" reviews are never made
visible.) So yes, that review is now visible to everyone, including the
author of the story.

Hope that clears things up.

Re: ADMIN - 2010 awards - tying up loose ends, and looking forward Posted by mvoltfan December 18, 2010 - 22:14:18 Topic ID# 10799
Special thanks to these volunteers:

MARTA, who helped me when I accidentally reviewed the wrong story - not once, but twice! - and was still graciously fixing my mistakes after voting had closed.

FOXRAFER, for channeling people's responses to my reviews and for forwarding my responses to other people's reviews, even when I addressed them incorrectly.

DWIMORDENE, for being a really awesome story liaison on my three stories and helping me finalize them for the MEFAs.

Everybody who made these MEFAs possible was amazing.

reminders - banners, review replies, and suggestions for next year Posted by Marta December 22, 2010 - 16:51:07 Topic ID# 10820
Hey guys,

There are two upcoming deadlines I want to remind everyone about:

=== December 31 ===

1. Winning authors, if you want to have one of our volunteers customize a
banner for you, you need to request those banners by December 31. (This only
applies if you want to use one of the general banners useable in any of the
categories, not the pre-made ones that do not require customization.) You
should request banners at:

http://community.livejournal.com/mefas/257523.html

2. All authors, you can reply to your reviews using the "reply to review"
link beside each of your reviews at our website. You will need to do this by
this same deadline.

=== January 15 ===

If you have suggestions for the 2011 awards, I look forward to hearing them.
You must make those suggestions by January 15, by commenting at

http://community.livejournal.com/mefas/193869.html

A merry Christmas to all who celebrate it!

Marta

donations drive Posted by Marta December 28, 2010 - 21:37:29 Topic ID# 10821
Hey guys,

As you know, the MEFAs are run mostly by volunteers who share their time and
talents to make the awards run smoother every year. People don't participate
in the MEFAs - as volunteers or authors - for the money. There simply isn't
any. But the company that provides our web space does occasionally expect us
to pay them. :-) So every year around this time we collect donations so we
can pay their fees.

Any donations will be used to pay official site expenses like our web site
fees. You can pay by debit/credit card using Paypal (which is quite secure,
and we will never see your information). Use the button at

http://community.livejournal.com/mefas/264036.html

If you prefer you can also mail me cash or check and I will make the
donation on your behalf. Email me at mefasupportATgmailDOTcom and I will
send you my address.

Don't worry if you can't donate to us. Some of you are students on limited
budgets. And with the bad economy, I am sure many people are having a hard
time affording all the things they need and want to do. If you don't feel
you can afford to donate, you can also support the awards by finding good
fic to nominate next year and participating in any capacity when the time
comes. But for those of you who do want to chip in for site expenses, now's
the time.

(Now's not the only time. You can donate whenever you have the money. But I
try to only show up with my hand out once a year.)

****************

Also, a reminder about some upcoming deadlines:

==> If you want a banner customized, get that request in by Dec. 31. Request
a banner at http://community.livejournal.com/mefas/257523.html

==> If you want to reply to a review, remember that also should be done by
Dec. 31. After that we may not forward your review until next summer.

==> Got a suggestion for 2011? Submit it at
http://community.livejournal.com/mefas/193869.html by Jan. 15.
