Need correction to link...and one other little thing Posted by Larian August 07, 2004 - 17:29:36 Topic ID# 1973
(Both of these are on the website)

Since FF.net changed their urls,

The link to Altariel's story, Death by Water should be

http://www.fanfiction.net/s/588202/1/

It currently has this:
http://www.fanfiction.net/s/588202

On the Romance page, Featuring Haldir, the story Khila Amin should
list Julie and Fianna as authors. Julie is the only one listed
right now.

Thanks :)

Okay, I'll get it fixed tonight. Thanks for catching it. I thought I'd
gotten all those. But yes, if you leave that /1/ off, the link breaks.

OT: Know anyone who has had a stroke? Posted by Ainaechoiriel August 10, 2004 - 21:16:02 Topic ID# 1976
If you do, you know how serious it is and how it can totally change
someone's life. If they live through it.

But did you know that even children can have strokes? I didn't until I
signed up with the American Stroke Association's Train to End Stroke
program. I pledged to fundraise for them, and they promised to train me for
a marathon! Yep, I'm going to walk 26.2 miles in January for the ASA.

Though the marathon isn't until January, I need to have the bulk of my
fundraising in by October.

If you would like to help save lives by donating to the ASA's cause for
research and advocacy, please click the link below to donate online. Or
e-mail me privately and we can work out how you can mail me a check. (You
can also request that I wear the name of the stroke victim you know when I
walk. We call them Stroke Heroes and I'd be glad to do that. Also, if you
company has a matching gifts program, e-mail me for my address to send me
the form and double your donation!)

To donate online, go to: www.ttes.kc.kintera.org
Click on Sponsor Participant
Enter my name: Gabrielle Lawson (Yep, that's my Mortal Alter Ego's name)
and then fill out the form for you donation.

If you have any questions, e-mail me privately.

Thank you.

Well, ff.net is back up now, so we might be able to read stories there. I
can't upload a story though. (I had a minor edit to fix).

Thanks and welcome to the group. It's pretty slow around here right now
because we're in Reading Season. 2 1/2 months set aside to read as many
nominated stories as we can. The list will definitely pick up in October
when Voting Season starts.

For now, I say, dive in! Start reading and go ahead and write your comments
for the stories. Just save them to you hard drive so that you will only need
to copy and paste them into your ballots when the time comes. Or, if you
happen to have a wonderful memory, don't bother "voting early" in this way
and just type your votes into the ballots when Voting Season starts. ;-)

You can most easily find all the nominated stories with summaries on our
website: www.stormpages.com/~ainae/memfa

Less than one month to Voting Season Posted by ainaechoiriel August 20, 2004 - 22:28:04 Topic ID# 1983
I hope you are all having a great time reading! Just wanted to let
you all know that there's less than one month to Voting Season.
Reading Season ends on September 15th. That doesn't mean you can't
keep reading, it just means the time we set aside specifically to
read is going to end. Then we'll start voting.

You might want to try getting longer stories out of the way. Shorter
stories could be read in a day or a few hours. So they might be best
left for during Voting Season if you need to prioritize.

And as always, I'll remind you that you can "vote early" by typing up
your comments right after you read a story. You can then save it to
your hard drive and then copy and paste it into the ballots when it's
time.

And we presently have 15 volunteers for vote counters. We can always
use some more.

Info for new folks! Posted by ainaechoiriel August 29, 2004 - 22:48:09 Topic ID# 1984
I just went back and checked my welcome message, which was sent to
you when you joined and I realized, I hadn't edited since May! That
was when Nomination Season was open, right?

Well, anyway, Nomination Season has been closed for some time now.
After that was Check Ballot Season (where we sent out pre-ballots for
checking for accuracy) and now we are in Reading Season. In other
words, we're reading. ;-) Which is why we're so quiet around here
now.

Because this awards program, unlike it's inspiration (the
Alt.StarTrek.Creative Awards), doesn't have a built-in pool of
stories that members could have been reading all year long, we've set
aside 2 1/2 months for reading nominated stories. And it ends in
just over 2 weeks.

So, if you're new (and even if you're not!), you might want to jump
in with both feet. Check out the Final 2004 Nominations on the web
site (http://home.earthlink.net/~ainae/mefa/final2004noms.html) to
see which stories are nominated for which categories. And start
reading!

Tips for reader/voters:

1) I've said it often: Vote early. There is a spreadsheet you can
download (in the Files section) to record your comments early. Or
you can just save them anywhere on your hard drive. Just don't send
them to the group until Voting Season. But write your comments while
the stories are still fresh in your mind. (For example: I've got 40
comments already written.)

2) Start with the stories you've already read. If you've already
reviewed them, check out your review. Don't just copy and paste it
for your comment though. At least change it a little bit so the
author will get at least a little new feedback. Peruse the story
again if you have to, scanning through it until it jogs your memory.

3) Prioritize. Since Reading Season is quickly coming to a close,
decide which stories you REALLY want to read and read them now. Save
the others you'd like to read for later so that you can at least get
the ones you REALLY want to read read before Voting Season starts.
You can still read during Voting Season, though there will be
deadlines on the comments (and they may stagger by category, so that
we're not voting on all categories at the same time. I don't think
I've nailed that down 100% yet). Remember, you don't have to read
all the stories. Read the ones that interest you first, might
possibly interest you second, etc. See #5 below for why you
shouldn't read something you know you won't like.

*My advice, read the longest stories now. You can squeeze in the
shorter stories during Voting Season. The last two I read were 48
and 30 chapters long. My next is 24, I think.

4) READ! :-) You can't vote if you don't have something to say!

5) And remember that negative or even constructive criticism gets the
author/story just as many points as positive. So it's really not
worth it to put a negative comment down. A constructive one is
slightly more doable. If I feel the need, I just drop in two or
three words before the positive stuff. You don't want the points
total to go up for a not-so-good thing about the story. If you have
only not-so-good stuff to say, write it up, but DON'T post it to the
group with your votes. Save it for a time after the awards and send
it to the author personally (or put it in an ff.net review, etc.).
And try to be tactful even then. Don't flame anyone.

Well, that's about it. I've updated the Welcome message and I'll try
to be better about keeping it up-to-date now. So, to sum up: the
group is quiet now. We're all reading. It will be plenty busy once
Voting Season opens.

If you have any questions before Voting Season, go ahead and post
them to the list. Check out the FAQ and the Q and A (both on the
website and in the Files section) and try and familiarize yourselves
with how this is going to work.

I now return you to your regularly scheduled reading!

Yeah, but I think I nominated more than that. I need to get on the ball!
And try and remember the stories I'd already read enough to write comments.
I know they were good, or I wouldn't have nominated them..... Darn memory.

Onthe Verge of Something Big Posted by ainaechoiriel August 30, 2004 - 12:38:39 Topic ID# 1987
To me anyway.

I have just figured out how to host my own web site!!!!!!

Not to get too excited yet, but I've tested it by pointing it to the
MEFA site on my hard drive. And it worked.

You can go to http://24.145.167.102/index.html

and see the MEFA site!

But notice that IP address there. It is not a static address. It
will change from time to time because it's my WAN IP leased to me by
Earthlink.

So I've got to look around for a free (I'm far too poor to pay for
anything) service that will link a domain *name* to my changing IP
address. I hear dydns is a good place to start.

So here's a question, would you all mind if I moved the MEFA web site
from the present earthlink.net address to my own server once I figure
this out?

Or shall I just keep them both up until this Awards year is finished
and migrate for next year?

Good point. It's really not hard for me to update both, so they will both be
available for now. My site points righ to the files that I upload to
Earthlink anyway. ;-) I won't bother changing any of the links just yet.
Next year though...

I was a little worried that we were running out of space for the Awards

I also figured out how to host my own FTP site. :-D And news

Sorry, hon. I don't think you got my recent message apologizing for not
updating eh welcome message. Nomination Season was back in May and closed
on June 15th. We're now in Reading Season. I'll try to be better about this
in the future. Anyway, save your nomination for next year. I see you're
set to Daily Digest and I did just send that message out this morning.

Sorry for the confusion.

I vote for whatever is easiest on you! But I admit that this is far more technical that I am able to understand, for I am totally technically challenged. But I still vote on whatever is easier on you! Make life easier is MY motto!

I agree with Larian on this one. I know I've got
all my stuff linked to this site and for reasons
known only to my website, any time I try to
change the links, it f***s up royally!!! But
that's just mine. On a more objective note, I
think it would probably be a lot easier to wait
until this year's is done, simply to give
yourself less work to do. Start it when this one
is finished, that way you don't have to rush
anything for any reason. Ultimately, it's your
decision. Just let us all know what the new link
would be if it changes if you don't mind!!! :)

Computers: Can't live with 'em, can't live w/o 'em. (WAS: RE: [MEFA Posted by Ainaechoiriel August 31, 2004 - 0:03:27 Topic ID# 1987
Well, I've got other fish to fry before I work on this much more (except at
work). My fun day with computer technology turned out to be a very not fun
evening with it. And it kept me from my training walk (for the marathon).

Not only will my domain still not work correctly (though an FTP and web
server will), but one of my computers crapped out on me. All I did was take
out it's non-working CD Rom and replace the video card with a better one a
friend had given me. I plugged it back in and it wouldn't show up on the
monitor. So I thought bad video card, despite the fact that it didn't beep
at me. I put my video card back in. Same problem. I tried two old video
cards I had in storage (yep, I'm a hardware hoarder): an AGP and an ISA.
Neither of those worked. I had my server's case open already so I tried all
three of the AGP video cards in it. Mine and the friend's didn't work (and
did beep), but the old AGP card did. So I tried the server's video card in
the recalcitrant computer. Still the same.

Diagnosis: Bad motherboard and two bad video cards.

Fun, huh? Not that I can really afford a new motherboard or video card just
now....

Gotta find a motherboard cheap and maybe that old AGP card will still work
on it.

On the bright side, my other clients do still work and I've switched the
software for GoToMyPC.com from the dead computer to the one I'm typing on
just now. It can browse the server, but the server can't browse it. Which
brings me back to the network problems I had last night.

If there are any fellow techies out there who understand Active Directory,
could we maybe IM tomorrow to see if you can help me figure out what's going
on with my LAN? I thought AD was supposed to be an improvement. One of the
network admins at work thought it might be the DNS. So we edited that.
Then when I got home, I put both clients on to Workgroup so I could then add
them to the domain from there. No such luck. I keep being told the domain
could not be found or connected. Even from the server itself. Very
annoying. And my computers were then stuck off the LAN. The one died
before I could try and get it back on. I was able to restart the server in
NT 4.0 server and thus rejoin my LAN from this computer. Then I rebooted
the server back into Win2K and I'm back to where I was before I tweaked the
DNS.

Sigh.

Can't do the ftp thing in NT 4. That's what started this whole ball rolling
and the eventual upgrade to Win2K server. But to get it to know it was a
domain controller I had to promote it and that started Active Directory
loading whether I wanted it to or not.

And wouldn't you know, all my files for the Train to End Stroke campaign are
on the dead computer. You think I wouldn't be so upset about one computer
being down when I still have three I can use here at home. But I do
different things on each computer. Like this one is used for reading about
5 of my e-mail addresses and Ainaechoiriel's IM. I checked my Trek address
and my Pampered Chef one and the Gmail account I use for Train to End Stroke
stuff on the now-dead pc, and Tarlingen's IM. I'd browse over here while
watching TV over there, etc.

And over there is where the printer was attached. I miss my computer. :-(
