Tolkien Online as an archive Posted by ainaechoiriel July 19, 2004 - 15:26:22 Topic ID# 1954I've stated my dislike for this archive before, but I've just had one
too many run-ins with it. It's too late in the game for this year,
but next year, no tolkienonline nominations will be approved.
Why?
1)You can't easily search for stories
2)If you manage to find one chapter of one, you can't find the second.
It's just not a user-friendly archive.
So, this is it: For the 2005 MEFA Awards, tolkienonline nominations
are not allowed. If you want to nominate a story from that archive,
see if you can find it somewhere else. If it's your story, post it
somewhere else before April 30th, 2005. Tolkienonline URLs, unless
they make major improvements in their archive, will be turned away at
the door.

Re: Tolkien Online as an archive Posted by Chathol-linn July 19, 2004 - 17:44:09 Topic ID# 1954Hi, Ainaechoriel. I agree with your assessment of Tolkienonline. In the
period between release of FotR and TTT, I thought it was one of the
best. But the changes they made around November 2002 led to ugly
formatting for the stories, a sense of not caring about the fans. Then
they got someone who started censoring reviews of stories according to
some kind of "my way or the highway" standards. It got to be so bad
that real dreck was rated highly because the censor simply deleted all
unfavorable comments - "unfavorable" being defined as the ones she
disagreed with.
An interesting concept for the Internet - making a thought into an
"un-thought."
Too bad. But you are right. Regards - Chathol-linn

comment on it much. I follow a link every once in awhile, like when someone
posts a message that there's an interesting article there. But otherwise,
I've only gone recently to look for stories when we had a URL problem. And
you just can't seem to search. Or at least I can't. Maybe I don't know
where to look. But I have been able to find some of the stories' chapters,
but there was no link to the rest of the chapters. Very annoying.
> Too bad. But you are right. Regards - Chathol-linnThanks. Maybe they'll get their act together. If they do, I'll release that
rule and let tolkienonline URLs be approved again, but they really need to
make some changes for that to happen.

Doesn't common sense dictate that you post a link to the next chapter of a
story at the end of the current one? I mean, I'm no web design genius but I do
manage to get that done at OEAM. And I've tried to search there and get story
not found..and even one spot where I *did* find an author's listing, the
chapters were listed separately and NOT in order. Very very odd, and
difficult.
Good executive decision, I say.

Re: Tolkien Online as an archive Posted by Ainaechoiriel August 13, 2004 - 20:13:16 Topic ID# 1954Thanks and welcome to the group. It's pretty slow around here right now
because we're in Reading Season. 2 1/2 months set aside to read as many
nominated stories as we can. The list will definitely pick up in October
when Voting Season starts.
For now, I say, dive in! Start reading and go ahead and write your comments
for the stories. Just save them to you hard drive so that you will only need
to copy and paste them into your ballots when the time comes. Or, if you
happen to have a wonderful memory, don't bother "voting early" in this way
and just type your votes into the ballots when Voting Season starts. ;-)
You can most easily find all the nominated stories with summaries on our
website: www.stormpages.com/~ainae/memfa
