approaching nominations deadlines Posted by aure\_enteluva July 04, 2007 - 16:45:46 Topic ID# 7934
Hey guys,

This is a friendly reminder: the last day to nominate a story for the
2007 awards is JULY 15. You will not be able to nominate a story after
this.

If you are reading this and would like to nominate a story, you need
to join the MEFAwards Yahoo group. Do this at
http://groups.yahoo.com/group/MEFAwards/ or by emailing
MEFAwards-subscribe@yahoogroups.com. Please don't wait until the last
minute; you will be sent log-in information to our voting and
nominating website within a day or two of joining this Yahoo group.

The last day for authors to approve their nomination is JULY 22. if
you have had a story nominated you will need to finish the form and
email your liaison saying that you're okay with the nomination by July
22. If you aren't sure who your liaison is, you may email
mefasupport(at)gmail(dot)com.

Just so everyone is clear, the MEFA day is based on Greenwich Mean
Time. For the current "official" time go to
http://www.mefawards.net/MEFA2007/ and look at the "Page Served at: "
line in the bottom-left corner. As I'm writing this, it is currently
5:41 in my time zone (U.S. eastern) on July 4, and the MEFA's official
time is "2007-07-04 21:41:40 GMT".

Hard-to-Find Authors, Round 2 Posted by aure\_enteluva July 04, 2007 - 23:20:23 Topic ID# 7935
Hey guys,

The Middle-earth Fanfiction Awards will continue accepting nominations
through July 15, and nomination authors have until July 22 to complete
their nominations. However, there are quite a few authors who were
nominated a while ago and we either haven't been able to contact, or
whose nominations have been begun but not finished. In many cases we
just need the author to email saying that they are finished with their
nomination and would like for the liaison to look over it to make sure
everything's in order.

Do you know any of these authors? If so, please have them email
mefasupport(at)gmail(dot)com. Also, if you know a way to reach them
besides what's been mentioned, please let us know so we can try to
contact them that way again.

I want to emphasize that authors have until July 22; we're just trying
to make sure they have plenty of time. This is not an attempt to rush
you, and if you know you've been nominated and are still working on
your form, that is fine. Also, this list is only up to date as of July
3. If you've spoken with one of our volunteers since that, you're
probably okay. If you want to make sure you can also email
mefasupport(at)gmail(dot)com and I'll double-check for you.

If you know these authors, it would be extremely helpful if you could
have us get in touch with them. They have been told they were
nominated and have until July 22 to reply so the nominations cannot be
withdrawn until it's too late for the nominator to use the nomination
on another story. If we know the author doesn't want to participate,
we can withdraw it in time for the nominator to nominate something
new. (Many people really struggle to choose what to nominate,
especially if they read shorter stories.)

Now for the authors.

1. Aeode
Aeode's story "The Personification of Evil: The Corruption of Angband"
was only nominated a few days ago, but this is the first time one of
her stories has been nominated for the MEFAs so I wanted to mention
her. If you know this author, it might be a good idea to make sure she
knows she's nominated.

2. Alassiel
Alassiel's stories "Counsel" and "Sent Unto Men" were nominated. She
replied to an initial email but hasn't yet begun the form. These were
nominated several weeks ago. If you know Alassiel, please have her
email mefasupport(at)gmail(dot)com or her liaison if she needs any
help. Also, when she's done with the forms she should email her liaison.

3. amebrindra
Her story "His Ada's Love" was nominated, but we haven't had any reply
to our emails. If you know her, please have her contact us so her
story can compete.

4. amrumofthesouthcountry
This author's story "Crimson Fields" was nominated soon after
nominations opened, but hasn't responded. Also, there is no way to
leave a review at the archive (one way we try to reach authors if they
don't respond to emails), and we just don't have another way to reach
her. Please, if you know this author have her email
mefasupport(at)gmail(dot)com as we're out of ideas and want her to be
able to compete.

5. Baggins Babe
Her story "Tea and Seedcakes and the Influence on Hobbits" was
nominated 6/22, and she has not replied to any emails. Please have her
contact mefasupport(at)gmail(dot)com.

6. Baranduin
Baranduin has had two stories nominated. "The Long Winter" was
nominated 6/2; the author responded to an email but hasn't begun the
form and we haven't heard from her in quite a while. Also, she's had a
new story ("The Green Hill") nominated much more recently, on 7/1. She
hasn't replied to emails about that, though it's only been a few days.
Still, I'm a bit worried because it's been so long since "The Long
Winter" was nominated, so if you know her, please have her get in touch.

7. Bewize
This author said she wanted her nominated piece "And We Will Travel
North" to compete, but she hasn't begun her form or replied to more
recent emails. We've run out of ways to try contacting her, so if you
know her, please have her get in touch.

8. Bodlops
We have tried to contact Bodldops every way we can think of. Her
liaison emailed her multiple times and left a review where the story
is archived. I even tried to IM her Yahoo account. However, we still
haven't had any response, and Bodldops has not begun the form for "The
Use of a Good Bit of Chain" (nominated 6/6). If you know this author
please have her get in touch, as we're out of ideas.

9. Clairon
Clairon's story "Worty Dying For" was nominated. She hasn't responded
to emails sent to the email address provided for her. Raksha the Demon
(who cowrote a story with her in the past) has also tried to get in
touch, but without success. We are out of ideas for how to contact
her; any help greatly appreciated.

10. Curious
Curious's essay "Bilbo's Dark Psyche" was nominated, and her liaison
emailed her on 6/26. We have not heard back from her.

11. Eretria
Eretria's liaison tracked her down through her LJ. Eretria wrote her
liaison on 6/18, and her liaison replied back. However, we have not
had any more contact with this author. Unless Eretria completes the
form about her story ("Candles") and emails her liaison that she
approves the nomination, it won't be able to compete.

12. Greywing
Her stories "O Cruel Fate", "Mistaken Identies", and "Romance" were
nominated, all on 6/12. Greywing responded to the original emails, but
she's not begun these stories' forms or replied to more recent emails.
If you know her, please have her contact us if she needs help getting
these nominations ready to compete.

13. Jay of Lasgalen
Jay has completed the forms for her nominated stories ("A crown of
woodland flowers", "Promises to keep", "The treasure hunt") but we
need a final email saying she's happy for the stories to compete. If
you know Jay, please have him email mefasupport(at)gmail(dot)com.

14. Joan Milligan
Her story "Of Wine and Merriment" was nominated several weeks ago, but
she hasn't replied to any emails. If you know her, please have her
contact us.

15. Klose
Klose's story "Bonfires of Trust, Flashfloods of Pain" was nominated
6/13 and her liaison has tried to reach her several times. She has
begun the form but not finished it, and she has not emailed her
liaison at all. If you know this author, please have her email
mefasupport(at)gmail(dot)com so we know everything is okay.

16. Lady of Ithilien
We have sent her emails to the address provided, as well as left
comments at her LJ. We have not heard from her. Please, if you know
how to reach her, have her contact mefasupport(at)gmail(dot)com.

17. Lipstick
Lipstick's story "The City and Star Island Line" were nominated 6/26,
and we have not heard from her. If you know Lipstick, please have her
email mefasupport(at)gmail(dot)com if she has not received these emails.

18. LydiaB
We haven't had any response from this author. If you know how to reach
LydiaB, please have her get in touch.

19. Otto's Goat
Otto's Goat's story "The Minstrel's Song" was nominated, but she
hasn't responded to emails sent to the email address provided for her.
We don't know of any other way to contact her.

20. vladazhael
Vladazhael said she was interested in competing and would fill out the
forms for her stories ASAP, but she does not seem to have done this.
If anyone knows vladazhael please have her email
mefasupport(at)gmail(dot)com. If she needs more time that's okay, but
if there's a problem we'd like to know so we can work on it.

21. Yoru no Hime
Her story "Tell Me What the Rain Knows" some time ago, but we haven't
had any contact. Please, if you know her, have her email
mefasupport(at)gmail(dot)com.

I talk with *Alassiel *all the time. I know she's been reluctant to accept
the nominations for personal reaons. I will remind her that if she doesn't
want to accept the nominations that she has to let you know. I've been
trying to convince her otherwise, but that's her call.

Marta:

Greywing has gotten the messages and has emailed Nancy, I believe.

You can take her off your problem list.

I sent word to Baggins Babe, so hopefully she'll be contacting you
soon.

I'll contact these three and nudge them into your direction or do some
prodding. It might be that some already did so though, but since none
replied yet... ;)

Hi Amy,

Thanks for doing that. I cannot edit the post at this group, but I am
editing the version of the LJ list (that the messages posted at
non-MEFA listservs and forums point to), so that it's up-to-date with
who has been contacted.

Hi Nautika,

Thanks for this, and for posting at Jay's blog. I have updated the
list of authors at our LJ with this information, and I hope to hear
from them both soon.

Re: Hard-to-Find Authors, Round 2 Posted by Marta Layton July 05, 2007 - 10:33:05 Topic ID# 7935
Hi nautika,

Yep, we have a LJ. http://community.livejournal.com/mefas/. I
basically post the same announcements there that I do here, and it's
for the benefit of people who use LJ more than Yahoo. One of the
benefits is that I can edit those posts after I make it, so instead of
having to resend an updated list I can just edit the existing one.

In addition to posting this announcement here and at the LJ, I also
send a quick email to a group of people who have offered to make
announcements at blogs, forums, Yahoo groups, and other groups that
aren't MEFA specific. This group of volunteers is called promoters.
Anyway, I sent them a quick note to post at their group, basically
saying we needed help reaching these authors and pointing them to the
list I posted at the LJ. I used that instead of this group post
because, like I said, I can edit it. So it's the most up-to-date on
who's been contacted and who hasn't.

Hey there!

First off, my email address is baranduin98055@yahoo.com -- not sure
where other emails have been going as I haven't received any since
Llinos so kindly popped into my LJ (baranduin.livejournal.com) to tell
me about the first nom.

Second, thanks so much for the nominations. I didn't realize I was
supposed to take any action myself other than agreeing and joining
this group. Please point a clueless author to what I need to do?

Thanks so much and sorry for the silence. I'm afraid I don't
participate in Yahoo groups these days so haven't been seeing anything
aimed at me from here. Bad me!

Hi Lora,

Thanks for getting in touch. I'm really not sure where the emails we've
been sending have been going. The address we have is
baranduin98055@yahoo.com, and unless you can spot a typo that my name is
just glazing over, we have the right address. Is it possible our emails
are getting filtered as spam? They should be coming from
mefasupport@gmail.com, and I know Yahoo sometimes doesn't play well with
gmail.

I just resent you your password, from my personal address
(melayton@gmail.com). If you don't receive it let me know. I guess I
could post the password at your LJ, though if I do that I'd encourage
you to change it ASAP since it would be publicly viewable.

Anyway, you need to do two things. There is a form that every author
must fill out on their story. It gets information that helps our voters
know a little about it before voting, like main characters and summary.
Also the form gathers information we need to place it in the best
category and sub-category possible.

You can fill out this form by

1. Log in to www.mefawards.net/MEFA2007/ using the log-in information I
just sent you.
2. Scroll down to the bottom of the page.
3. Click the "Edit Data" link under the story.
4. Answer every question on the form. If you need an option added or
have questions please email your liaison or mefasupport@gmail.com. Once
done click the button to submit the form.
5. If you have more than one piece nominated, repeat 2-4 for each story.

And when you've done *that*, email your liaison. You need to do this to
tell them that you're satisfied with the form (so we have a record of
that), and also so they know to look over your form and make sure it's
completed correctly. Or if you're not sure who your liaison is you can
email me at mefasupport@gmail.com and I'll see it gets handled by the
right person.

I think that's it! Let me know if you have questions.

Marta

Hi Marta --

I think we have a mystery since it looks like that email addy is
correct and yet I'm not receiving the emails you're sending and
they're not going into bulk mail.

If you don't mind posting the password in my LJ
(baranduin.livejournal.com), I'll snag it there and then delete the
comment. Alternatively you can try emailing my work email at
bounds.l@ghc.org ... either is fine with me

Thank you! Sorry to be a problem child here :-)

Never received login Posted by christinex1001 July 07, 2007 - 8:32:47 Topic ID# 7954
Hi -- I signed up with the group so I could nominate and vote on
stories for the awards, but I don't think I ever received a
password/login information for the actual MEFA site. What should I do?

Thanks!

I left a comment for her also, at SoA. She had no idea she'd been
nominated--hadn't checked that particular email account lately. Hopefully
she will be in touch soon!

Hi ChristineX,

I'm not sure why you never received that password. I just have resent it
to you, from the address mefasupport@gmail.com. Could you double-check
that it didn't get filtered as spam for some reason?

If you don't receive it, I can post it somewhere for you, but if I do
that everyone would see it. Do you have an LJ or somewhere that's a
*bit* more private than such a public Yahoo group? Or if you have an
instant messenger then I could give it to you that way. Please let me
know what would be best for you.

Thanks for working so hard to get in touch!

If anyone has a more up-to-date email address for her, please let me
know so I can update the one we have on file for her. That way if we
email her in the future it will go to the best one.

Hi, Marta.

Yes, Yahoo's good ol' spam filter nuked. I found it, after filtering
through about five pages of junk. Oy! Thank you very much for

Hi Alastiel,

Are you the author of "Council" and "Sent Unto Men"? If so, you have
been nominated under the name Alassiel, and with the address
erundil(at)clearwire(dot)net. I have just resent that author's account
to that email; it was sent from the email address
melayton(at)gmail(dot)com, with the subject "MEFAs".

Can you check that email address? Or if this is you but that email
address is wrong, let me know and I'll resend the password to
alastiel(at)gmail(dot)com.

Thanks,
Marta

I'm afraid that isn't me. I'm sorry. But if you could resend the
password and login I never received, I'd really like to nominate a
story or two and vote. Please send it to alastiel at gmail dot com,
if it's not too much trouble.

Thanks. :)

Hi Alastiel,

Okay, I see the confusion. With the names so similar, I just assumed
there was a typo somewhere.

I've sent you your password to your gmail address. It should be coming
from my personal account, melayton(at)gmail(dot)com.

Fixes and udates to review code Posted by Liz Warren July 09, 2007 - 11:39:02 Topic ID# 7967
Hi All

I've fixed some minor bugs in the code to display existing reviews and
enter and save new or existing reviews. If anyone still sees any errors,
please let me know.

You'll also now find that when you open the page to enter a new review
or to edit/preview/save a review, the name of the story you're reviewing
will now appear at the top of the page (next to Submit Review" and
"Preview Review and Save or Modify") as well as in the panel further
down the page where you can edit the review. I hope this helps make it
clearer which story you're reviewing - I know I sometimes used to worry
I was submitting a review on the wrong story, especially when I had
several review windows open, because I had to scroll down the preview
page to see the name of the story.

As always, if you have any problems with the MEFA site, please check our
Technical FAQ at
http://www.mefawards.net/MEFA2007/index.php?page=FAQtechsupport first to
see if your question is answered there, and feel free to contact us if
you still need help.

Thanks

Several Announcements- Review Strategies; Banners; Call for Volunte Posted by aure\_enteluva July 09, 2007 - 12:06:10 Topic ID# 7968
Hey guys,

There are a lot of little announcements that I will combine into one.
These don't have anything to do with each other, and are in no
particular order.

1. REVIEW STRATEGIES

Last winter I asked several people who reviewed a lot of stories in
2006 to write down how they did it. What strategies worked, what
didn't, what would they do differently--that kind of thing. These
suggestions will not work for everybody, and you should certainly not
feel compelled to do any of these things unless you think it will be
useful, but hopefully reading over them will help you think of
approaches that might work for you. You can find these suggestions in
our FAQ section, at

http://mefawards.net/MEFA2007/index.php?page=FAQreviewing

If you would like to add your own suggestions please write them up and
send them to mefasupport(at)gmail(dot)com. The more the merrier.

2. BANNERS

Nautika asked me recently how to get involved writing banners, and I
thought some other people might be interested, too.

In previous years banner-making was competitive. Meaning that there
was a specific theme for first, second, and third place in every main
category, and that if more than one banner was made for any "theme" we
had a poll to select the "winning" banner. However, this year we
decided to do things a little differently.

This year, we're doing things a little less structured. You can make a
banner about anything Tolkien-themed that you want to. First Age
through Fourth, any race or character. Also, you can make "neutral"
banners, like with design elements but without specific pictures, or
you can use photos that aren't particularly fannish but connect with
Tolkien's universe somehow, like photos from the Hubble telescope or
pictures of the beach. Be creative!

Requirements are listed at
http://mefawards.net/MEFA2007/index.php?page=FAQbanners. Banners do
have to be certain sizes, and they need to have the phrases "2007" and
either "MEFAs" or "Middle-earth Fanfiction Awards" somewhere on them.
After the awards are over, winners can request a banner and we will
either add the category information for them or tell them how to add
it themselves.

If you'd like to submit a banner, do so by emailing it to
banners@mefawards.net.

3. CALL FOR VOLUNTEERS

I am looking for 2-3 volunteers who have been involved with the awards
in some capacity (even just as authors) in 2006 or earlier. You'll be
helping sort stories into their main categories and subcategories. You
need to have a fair amount of internet time and be available July
23-August 3.

I also need volunteers who can help come up with lists of characters,
settings, and canonical events for next year. Ideally I'd love someone
who reads and/or writes every major area of the fandom--for instance,
a Silmfic aficionado, a hobbit writer, and so on. Extensive canon
knowledge is not necessary (though it might be helpful), but you
should have a good feel for what writers of a particular fanon
"neighborhood" tend to focus on. What characters and so on would be
most useful? Email me at mefasupport@gmail.com if you'd like to help
out with this.

I think that's it! Promoters, I intend these announcements for this
group, but if you think your groups might find them useful you are
free to pass them along.

I would be willing to do that for Silmfics. I read a lot and do know the
canon pretty well and certainly know how to find anything I do not know (all the
books and very smart friends!).

On Banners

I think the lettering on the banners could be much clearer than it often is
(this is true of virtually all award banners--not just MEFAs). I have heard
lots of complaints about this. Writers find it is embarrassing to have post big
oversized versions of them just so the reader can tell what the award is.
The key is simple lettering and clear contrast with background.

project. And *waves to Dreamflower* thanks to you, too! Since I already

Thanks for this reminder. I am not very graphically motivated--don't
make banners--so this is not a concern I would have thought of. It's
good to keep in mind.

Hi, Marta!

I might be able to help you with the sorting if you still need someone. I just won't know for a couple of days if I'm going camping over the weekend of August 3 - 5 and if so that might mean I would be too busy then.

I would like to help with the character and settings part since I really see the need for that area to be more set, so let me know on that.

abandoned a completely horrible one and I was sure it would be

Hi geek_chick01,

No worries. I'm not quite sure what happened with your email, but I have
double-checked and your story is ready to compete. You don't need to do
anything else.

If you or any of the other nominated authors would like a button to
display with your story, several are available at

you like, then click the "download" button.

Nominations to Close in Two Days Posted by aure\_enteluva July 13, 2007 - 20:13:56 Topic ID# 7982
Hey guys,

Just a quick reminder: if you plan to nominate something for the 2007
awards you must do so by 11:59:59 PM on June 15.

At the time I'm writing this the official site time is 01:02:46 GMT on
July 14, and the current time in my timezone (U.S. Eastern) is 9:02 PM
on July 13. That means that in just under two days you will not be
able to nominate any more stories. So if you want to nominate some
things, please go ahead and do it.

If you are unsure of your password please let me know ASAP so I can
send it to you. Please don't leave it until the last second, because
I'd hate for you to miss out nominating because I couldn't get you
your password in time.

Hi Cressida,

If you like I can email her, but I'm not sure it will get through any
better than the first one did. If you're talking to her it might be
easier for her to pass along a message to her that would be great.

In order to compete, Roh Wyn needs to fill out a form at our website. To
do that she needs a password so she can log in. I can look up her
password for her and email it to her, but again, I'm not sure if she'll
get my email.

I know sometimes yahoo treats messages from gmail as spam. I send MEFA
email from mefaupport(at)gmail.com, so if she could add that email
address to the list of ones *not* treated as spam, I'll email her her
password.

Once she has her password, she needs to log in to
www.mefawards.net/MEFA2007/. Scroll down to the bottom of the page and
click the "Edit Data" link under her story. Fill out the form and click
the submit button, and then email mefasupport(at)gmail.com that she's done.

Btw, that's the process for *any*one to accept their nomination.

I'm working on a list of hard-to-reach authors right now and will be
posting it shortly, btw.

I've got a couple new authors whom I've not yet heard from, I know, but can't look at my list now. Can I send you that information this evening?

Between my on-again-off-again relationship with my Hughes satellite ISP
and Yahoo, this nomination season has been difficult, to say the least.
I belong to a number of book discussion groups, all of which are
hosted by Yahoo. I've tried forwarding the nomination notices to them,
and even with all headers and footers trimmed most have been rejected
by Yahoo's own spam filters. I've had to paraphrase them and remove
the links to the website to get them past the spam filters; and in
contacting Yahoo, they blame the listowners for the problems rather
than accepting they've set them too high.

In trying to figure out what was going on, I went onto Yahoo to check
and try adjusting my own settings, after which I started REALLY getting
spam, most of it from folk using Yahoo email addresses.

There have been discussions on two lists of going to other hosts, but I
can't get on any lists hosted by Topica as a result of Hughes' spam
filters; and three lists I used to be active on I can't even contact
any more for the same reasons.

I get so frustrated with the entire situation!

Yikes! Thanks for the extraordinary effort you've put into completing
your nominations! The whole situation must be very frustrating for you.
For some reason, it seems as though many more folks have had trouble
getting their information this year. One author/liaison team had to
complete their forms using instant messaging. Last night I set up a
private LiveJournal post to get another author all her information.
It's all been very challenging, but absolutely worthwhile.

Hi Larner,

As far as I am concerned, spammers deserve a slow and painful stint in
Barad-dur. Preferably with Gollum serenading them. They make me so mad,
because they really muck up people trying to enjoy the internet. I know,
it is naive about human nature to not expect to have to deal with this
kind of problem, but it still annoys me to no end.

Though I am sure it does not annoy me nearly as much as it annoys you. I
appreciate all of your efforts to promote the awards. If it doesn't
work, then it doesn't work, and as much as I'd like to get announcements
to your group, I completely understand if you aren't able to do that.

Thank *you* for all of your work. I appreciate it.

Approaching Deadlines for Authors and Reviewers Posted by aure\_enteluva July 17, 2007 - 8:44:46 Topic ID# 7989
Hey guys,

As most of you have probably realized, nominations are now closed and
have been since Sunday night. Thanks to everyone who nominated
stories. Right now the liaison team is hard at work finalizing as many
nominations as we can. I will be posting my last list of hard-to-reach
authors later tonight.

If you are an author and have been nominated, please make sure that
you have completed the form about your story at our website. To do
this, you need to log in to www.mefawards.net/MEFA2007; scroll down to
the bottom of the page; click the "Edit Data" link under your story;
complete the form you are shown; and hit the submit button. Then when
you've done that, please email your liaison to let them know you're
done. Alternately you can email mefasupport(at)gmail(dot)com, and I'll
see that the nomination is handled.

You MUST submit your form and let either your liaison or the
mefasupport address know that it is done by JULY 22. Remember, MEFA
days are based on GMT.

Also, there's another date reviewers may find significant: JULY 29.
This year, the MEFAs have started a new program to recognize
reviewers. Any reviewer can set a goal for how many reviews they'd
like to write (must be more than 10), and if they reach this goal they
will be recognized on our site. You'll get a blue ribbon by your name,
and a list of these reviewers will be linked to from the page listing
the authors who win this competition. Also, several artists have come
up with graphics that you can use to advertise the fact that yes, you
*are* a complete MEFA geek.

If you want to participate in this part of the awards, you must set
your goal by July 29. To do this, log in to
www.mefawards.net/MEFA2007/. You will see a link to set or edit your
reviewing target. You can change this target until July 29, and if you
reach this target you will be recognized in all the ways described above.

Read more about reviewing goals at
mefawards.net/MEFA2007/index.php?page=FAQjunkie

So, to summarize:

JULY 22 – All authors must finish the forms about their stories and
tell their liaisons (or mefasupport(at)gmail(dot)com) that they have
done so; otherwise their stories will be withdrawn.

JULY 29 – Reviewers who want to participate in the reviewer
recognition part of the awards must set their goals by this date.
Otherwise you will not be able to set a goal, and therefore not be
able to reach it and be recognized.

Hi Marta,

You said:

*Any reviewer can set a goal for how many reviews they'd like to write (must
be more than 10), and if they reach this goal they will be recognized on our
site.*

So the minimum number of reviews has to be 11? I am also assuming with
regards to reviewers' goals that if I say I will review 12 stories and end
up reviewing more than 12, that's okay, too?

Hi Fiondil,

I double-checked, and the instructions when you enter your goal say
"Your target must be greater than 10." So yes, you would have to have
a goal of 11 or greater.

> I am also assuming with
> regards to reviewers' goals that if I say I will review 12 stories and end

Oh yes! I am hoping to pass my own goal, and if you do that is great.
You are allowed to review as many stories as you like.

I should have clarified one thing when I made my announcement, though.
Only hidden and final reviews count toward your goal. If you enter a
draft review, that review is never displayed at our website, and does
not give the author any points, and so it doesn't count toward the
number of reviews you've written when the website determines if you've
met your goal. If you later change a draft review to a hidden or final
review, it will count toward your goal.

Hi Marta,

Thanks for the clarification. I have one more question concerning reviews
(and I'm sure other newbies have the same question): When exactly does the
Review season end and at what point do reviews have to be either Hidden or
Final in order to count? I'm afraid that some of the wording in your
Important Deadlines is a little confusing so I'm not sure just how much time
I actually have to read and review stories. It would help in determining how
many stories I think I can easily review within the given timeframe.

Er, actually, no, it should say something like "Your target must be 10
or more." The minimum goal that can be set is 10.

I'd like to blame that on being too busy actually making the code work
to realise it was wrong, or I could complain that the beta testers
didn't notice, or.... Nah, I just screwed up with wording it. *facepalm*

I'll go and change that to make it clearer.

Thanks for noticing, Fiondil, and sorry for the confusion, Marta.

Hi Fiondil,

I don't mind questions ag all. Ask away, whenever you need to.

December 30 is the last day to vote. You will not be able to enter new
reviews after this date, or edit the ones that are already in the
website. Since only hidden and final reviews are displayed and give
the author points, if you want a draft review to be counted, then
December 30 is also the deadline to change that review to either
hidden or final.

There's another deadline mentioned, September 30. This is the deadline
to edit any final reviews you might have. Any final reviews you enter
on September 30 or before, you cannot edit them after Septmeber 30.
Also, if you enter a new final review after September 30 you won't be
able to edit it at all. But you can still go on writing new reviews
and editing your draft and hidden reviews until December 30.

What about the important deadlines page is confusing? I reread it and
can't see what's confusing, which means that I know this information
too well to see what should be fixed. I've been involved with these
awards so long, sometimes it's hard for me to see what needs to be
changed. But if you'll tell me what's confusing I'll get it changed.

Hi Wimsey,

What I said before to Fiondil applies to you and every other person on
this listserv. If you have a question, this is a great place to ask
it. I actually like answering questions, and explaining how to do
things is one of my favorite parts of these awards. I really don't
mind answering questions, so if you're confused by something you can
always ask here. Odds are, someone else is confused, too--just like
Fiondil's question helped you.

This group is a place for me to make announcements, but it's also
where you can ask questions. I don't want people to get frustrated if
I can help it.

Oh, and if you're embarrassed to publicly ask a question, you can
email mefasupport(at)gmail(dot)com.

Hard-to-Reach Authors ***LAST LIST*** Posted by aure\_enteluva July 17, 2007 - 18:19:10 Topic ID# 7997
Hey guys,

We are quickly approaching the deadline by which nominations need to
be finalized. We have a strict deadline: authors must complete the
forms on their stories by July 22 in order for the story to compete.
And they need to email either their liaison or
mefasupport(at)gmail(dot)com by that same date. Remember, all MEFA
deadlines are based on GMT.

Some of these authors had their stories nominated at the end of the
nomination season and may not have had time to complete their forms
yet. That's okay, so long as you finish by the July 22 deadline. This
is not a list of "bad" authors or anything you need to be ashamed to
be on; we are merely concerned that these authors *might* not be aware
they need to do anything more about these nominations. If you did not
know you were nominated or thought you were done with these stories,
please contact mefasupport(at)gmail(dot)com ASAP so I can help you get
your story ready to compete.

I think she's in the 3rd trimister of her pregnancy, so she might be

I told all three that they were in this list and have been nudged. I

I got the messages to the groups, but with unnecessary paraphrasing.
Yahoo needs to do some work, and got a most thorough complaint that
they need to work on the offers for watching "alcoholic fathers doing
unspeakable things" (YES! I got such ads) rather than information on
fanfiction awards! This year has been an education on dealing with
Yahoo itself.

Four of the groups have been plagued with inappropriate spamming by
Yahoo-based email, while the legitimate stuff has had difficulty
getting through.

And I like to believe that there is a special place in Mordor for all
hackers and spammers and manufacturers of viruses, spybots, adware,
trojans, and so on where they must deal with their own products
eternally. They are beneath even the attentions of Smeagol! After
all, due to Smeagol's attentions at least Frodo managed to survive his
ordeal! Heh! Send the Mouth after them.

The story was actually nominated fairly recently--7/15. She was included
because it was her first story and this will be the last round-up list.

If she can get the form filled out by the 22nd, that would be great. If
not, pregnancies make fandom difficult, certainly! If she can't compete,
then she's always eligible again next year, or anytime in the future.

Hi Baranduin,

Thanks for getting in touch. I don't know why the emails are going
astray, and getting in touch with authors is one of the things I want to
smooth out before next year.

Once you get a chance to fill out your forms please email me, or you can
just post here and I'll finish things up so your story can compete.

Hi Marta,

While the question about how many reviews need to be done to get notice, the
other question I had about reviews is still unanswered, namely:

When exactly does the Review season end and at what point do reviews have to
be either Hidden or Final in order to count? I'm afraid that some of the
wording in your Important Deadlines is a little confusing so I'm not sure
just how much time I actually have to read and review stories. It would help
in determining how many stories I think I can easily review within the given
timeframe.

If you could answer this question at your convenience that would be helpful.

On another, but related, note: It turns out that Oshun and I are in the same
neighbor (Brooklyn) and are planning to meet today (Wednesday) at the
Botanical Gardens and hash out the Silmarillion lists together, so things
are moving along on that front as well.

Eum, ellfine2000=Ellie and Ellie already has 4 noms this year who are
all completed. I knew both nicks, so that's why I recognised it and
the story title. I heard from her this morning and the last weeks are
a struggle for her, but she said she would go and look, but it might
be that she gets back at you or her liaison that she can't find the
new nomination when she logs in as Ellie. So I think to smoothe this
one out, the nom under elfline2000 should be transferred to Ellie...
is that possible?

Re: Approaching Deadlines for Authors and Reviewers Posted by Liz Warren July 18, 2007 - 3:52:26 Topic ID# 7989
Hi Fiondil

It is a little confusing, because there are lots of deadlines when
different things happen with different kinds of reviews. Let me see if I
can clarify things.

You can start reviewing now (and mark reviews as Draft, Hidden or Final).

From 30 July, we will start to track your progress towards your MEFA
Recognition Target if you set one, based on how many Hidden and Final
Reviews you've written so far. There will be a message on your
"Overview" page showing you progress. As soon as the combined number of
Hidden and Final reviews you've written reaches your target, we will let
you know.

From 1 October, Final reviews will start to become public on the site
so that other people can read them. All reviews already made Final by 1
October will be published at that point, and you will no longer be able
to edit them.

Between 1 October and 30 December, any new Final reviews will be
published weekly. Once you have marked a review Final in this period,
you will no longer be able to edit it, even if it has not yet been
published.

Voting ends on 30 December, when all remaining Final reviews will be
published and all Hidden reviews will be converted to Final and
published. Draft reviews will never be published.

So, ultimately, you have until 30 December to write reviews and mark
them as Final or Hidden for them to count.

I hope that makes things a little clearer.

Okay, I didn't realize that she and Ellie were the same people. Thanks.

I have moved the story to the "Ellie" ID so Ellie should be able to
see it by logging in with the same name and password she used before.
I'll email Ellie about all of this as soon as I finish this email.

It's not so much that we live close together, as it is that I'm presently
visiting my brother who happens to live in Brooklyn. My actual residence is
China these days where I teach English. But it is cool that she just happens
to live in Brooklyn and all this is happening when I'm here.

I will probably not be replying to every such post (where you say you

Various MEFA Goings-On Posted by aure\_enteluva July 25, 2007 - 11:10:39 Topic ID# 8023
Hey gang,

As you probably realized by now, nominations are closed. That means
that no new stories will be added to what you may want to read and
review, and many voters begin to review in earnest around this time of
the year.

You can vote on any story nominated (provided you're not the author),
from now until December 30. That's a long time, but don't put off
reviewing until the end. This year we have around 725 stories, and
while no one should try to review all of them, it's always a good idea
to get started early and often.

To vote, you will need to enter a review for a story. Each review
gives its story points (up to ten for 1,000 characters). Stories are
sorted into subcategories of between 5 and 13 stories, and the three
stories in each subcategory with the highest number of points are
given first, second and third place. Stories that get an above-average
number of points but aren't in the top three in their subcategory are
given an honorable mention. These reviews will also be displayed at
our website, so you are giving an author new feedback, even if they
don't win an award.

For help figuring out how to enter a vote, see the "How do I vote?"
FAQ at www.mefawards.net/MEFA2007/index.php?page=FAQvoting#vot_1

But before you can vote you have to find a story to vote for. For help
finding stories, see the "How do I find a story to vote for?" FAQ at
www.mefawards.net/MEFA2007/index.php?page=FAQvoting#vot_15. Among
other things, this FAQ explains the filters, which help you find
groups of stories involving the same characters and settings, as well
as a host of other criteria. Read the FAQ for an explanation of how
these can help you find the kind of stories you'd like to review.

Also, many reviewers have offered their own suggestions about how to
write more and better reviews. These are suggestions only, but
hopefully some of the suggestions will work for you. You can read
these reviewing strategies at
www.mefawards.net/MEFA2007/index.php?page=FAQreviewing.

Two more things going on, and then I'll shut up. :-)

1. In a week or two I will be posting what's known as a "check ballot"
here. This is a list of the pieces competing in each sub-category. If
it looks like we placed a piece in the wrong main category or
sub-category, you will be able to ask for it to be moved to the right
one. We do trust that the information authors supply when filling out
their forms is accurate, but categorizers are as human as anyone else.
If your story ends up in a main category that you didn't approve,
please let us know so we can look into why it's there.

2. Don't forget, if you want to participate in the MEFA Junkie
(reviewer recognition program), you MUST enter your goal for how many
stories you want to review at www.mefawards.net/MEFA2006/ by JULY 29.

And finally.... a big THANK YOU to the volunteers who have worked so
hard during nomination season.

And I made a typo in that web address. It should be
www.mefawards.net/MEFA2007/. (note, 2007, not 2006)

Number of Stories Posted by Chris July 26, 2007 - 19:07:21 Topic ID# 8025
Hi,

When I log in to the web site and go to Browse Nominated Stories, I thought
I would get a list of all stories, since I haven't set any filters yet. But
I get a message that there are 246 items on the list, out of supposedly 729
completed nominations. How do I get a list of all stories?

Hi Chris,

That is an odd one. I just went to the site and Browse Stories is showing me the complete
list.

You had just logged into the site when this happened? You haven't done anything else on
the site first?

It sounds like it thinks the filter had been used. Hmm. Perhaps something was left in your
browser's cookies from a previous session. Try reloading the page. If that doesn't work,
log out and log back in. If THAT doesn't work, try quitting the browser and try again. If it
still doesn't work after all that, let me know! :-)

Hi Chris

I just went and looked, and you have 484 stories on your "Skip" list -
you can see these if you select "Skip" in the "Review Status" filter.
(And 484+246 would give the total of 730 stories nominated.)

I'm not sure if you intended to put all these stories on your "Skip"
list, but that's why they're not showing up in your unfiltered list.

You can use the "Remove From Skip/Wish List" link on each story to
remove them from your Skip list and see them on the main list again.

Hey Tanaqui,

D'OH! I always forget about that "Skip" thing. *blushes*

Do you think for next year we should add something to that info bar, that says "You have X
skipped stories" and "You have X stories on your wish list"?

That sounds like an excellent idea to me - do you want to add it to the
to-do list you're putting together for us?

Hmm, I should have read all messages before replying. That is new to me that stories on the skip list will not show up any longer on the main list. I thought when I don't specify any filter, I would get the complete list. Ok, now the mystery is cleared.

And, yes, these stories are intentionally placed on the skip list. I don't think I will be able to read everything on my wish list. I divided all stories between wish list and skip list. Now that nomination season is over, I will divide my wish list into stories I will definitely read and stories I try to get to. These will go on an artificial NoWish/NoSkip list. If I still have time after all these stories, I will look at my Skip list again. There are too many stories to waste my time paging through all the stories to find one I want to read today. Having the lists in a more manageable, size gives me more of a sense of accomplishment.

Unfortunately, my reading time is limited. But I discovered because of reading for the Mefas in previous years that my topics of interest have increased, so it is even harder this year to whittle the stories down to a manageable portion.

Hi Aranel,

I use 2 computers, one at work and one at home to access the site. Both computers show me 246 stories when I log in. I shut down both computers when I'm done with them, so I log in every time anew. I saw this behavior for quite some time already, but now I want to make sure that I don't miss out on anything.

I played around a bit with the filters, and when I use the wish list, skip list, Review list and no list filter I managed to get to all stories (I think). At least the numbers on these lists add up to 730.

topic at mefa-discussion Posted by aure\_enteluva July 29, 2007 - 13:56:31 Topic ID# 8032
Hey guys,

I just posted something I hope some of you can give me your thoughts
on, over at mefa-discussion. I have gone through the lists of
characters, settings, and events/time periods that people selected
while filling out their story forms, and come up with some groups of
characters that only have a story or two attached to them but could be
merged into things like "Other Gondorians" and "Other First Age
Elves". I think this would make the lists of characters and settings
easier to use.

You can find my list of proposed merges at

http://groups.yahoo.com/group/mefa-discussion/message/816

If you are a member of that group, please feel free to comment on
whether you think these proposed merges are a good idea or not.

If you *aren't* a member of the group, please do join up. You can do
that at http://groups.yahoo.com/group/mefa-discussion/.

Please, if you have a comment on one of the proposed merges, comment
at the mefa-discussion group rather than by private email or at this
group. There are only so many hours in the day, and it really helps me
to keep the discussion all in one place.

Thanks!

Marta
