Approaching Deadlines for Authors and Reviewers Posted by aure\_enteluva July 17, 2007 - 8:44:46 Topic ID# 7989Hey guys,
As most of you have probably realized, nominations are now closed and
have been since Sunday night. Thanks to everyone who nominated
stories. Right now the liaison team is hard at work finalizing as many
nominations as we can. I will be posting my last list of hard-to-reach
authors later tonight.
If you are an author and have been nominated, please make sure that
you have completed the form about your story at our website. To do
this, you need to log in to www.mefawards.net/MEFA2007; scroll down to
the bottom of the page; click the "Edit Data" link under your story;
complete the form you are shown; and hit the submit button. Then when
you've done that, please email your liaison to let them know you're
done. Alternately you can email mefasupport(at)gmail(dot)com, and I'll
see that the nomination is handled.
You MUST submit your form and let either your liaison or the
mefasupport address know that it is done by JULY 22. Remember, MEFA
days are based on GMT.
Also, there's another date reviewers may find significant: JULY 29.
This year, the MEFAs have started a new program to recognize
reviewers. Any reviewer can set a goal for how many reviews they'd
like to write (must be more than 10), and if they reach this goal they
will be recognized on our site. You'll get a blue ribbon by your name,
and a list of these reviewers will be linked to from the page listing
the authors who win this competition. Also, several artists have come
up with graphics that you can use to advertise the fact that yes, you
*are* a complete MEFA geek.
If you want to participate in this part of the awards, you must set
your goal by July 29. To do this, log in to
www.mefawards.net/MEFA2007/. You will see a link to set or edit your
reviewing target. You can change this target until July 29, and if you
reach this target you will be recognized in all the ways described above.
Read more about reviewing goals at
mefawards.net/MEFA2007/index.php?page=FAQjunkie
So, to summarize:
JULY 22 – All authors must finish the forms about their stories and
tell their liaisons (or mefasupport(at)gmail(dot)com) that they have
done so; otherwise their stories will be withdrawn.
JULY 29 – Reviewers who want to participate in the reviewer
recognition part of the awards must set their goals by this date.
Otherwise you will not be able to set a goal, and therefore not be
able to reach it and be recognized.

So the minimum number of reviews has to be 11? I am also assuming with
regards to reviewers' goals that if I say I will review 12 stories and end
up reviewing more than 12, that's okay, too?

"Your target must be greater than 10." So yes, you would have to have
a goal of 11 or greater.
You are allowed to review as many stories as you like.
I should have clarified one thing when I made my announcement, though.
Only hidden and final reviews count toward your goal. If you enter a
draft review, that review is never displayed at our website, and does
not give the author any points, and so it doesn't count toward the
number of reviews you've written when the website determines if you've
met your goal. If you later change a draft review to a hidden or final
review, it will count toward your goal.

Thanks for the clarification. I have one more question concerning reviews
(and I'm sure other newbies have the same question): When exactly does the
Review season end and at what point do reviews have to be either Hidden or
Final in order to count? I'm afraid that some of the wording in your
Important Deadlines is a little confusing so I'm not sure just how much time
I actually have to read and review stories. It would help in determining how
many stories I think I can easily review within the given timeframe.

I'd like to blame that on being too busy actually making the code work
to realise it was wrong, or I could complain that the beta testers
didn't notice, or.... Nah, I just screwed up with wording it. *facepalm*
I'll go and change that to make it clearer.
Thanks for noticing, Fiondil, and sorry for the confusion, Marta.

Re: Approaching Deadlines for Authors and Reviewers Posted by Marta July 17, 2007 - 11:37:25 Topic ID# 7989Hi Fiondil,
I don't mind questions ag all. Ask away, whenever you need to.
December 30 is the last day to vote. You will not be able to enter new
reviews after this date, or edit the ones that are already in the
website. Since only hidden and final reviews are displayed and give
the author points, if you want a draft review to be counted, then
December 30 is also the deadline to change that review to either
hidden or final.
There's another deadline mentioned, September 30. This is the deadline
to edit any final reviews you might have. Any final reviews you enter
on September 30 or before, you cannot edit them after Septmeber 30.
Also, if you enter a new final review after September 30 you won't be
able to edit it at all. But you can still go on writing new reviews
and editing your draft and hidden reviews until December 30.
What about the important deadlines page is confusing? I reread it and
can't see what's confusing, which means that I know this information
too well to see what should be fixed. I've been involved with these
awards so long, sometimes it's hard for me to see what needs to be
changed. But if you'll tell me what's confusing I'll get it changed.

What I said before to Fiondil applies to you and every other person on
this listserv. If you have a question, this is a great place to ask
it. I actually like answering questions, and explaining how to do
things is one of my favorite parts of these awards. I really don't
mind answering questions, so if you're confused by something you can
always ask here. Odds are, someone else is confused, too--just like
Fiondil's question helped you.
This group is a place for me to make announcements, but it's also
where you can ask questions. I don't want people to get frustrated if
I can help it.
Oh, and if you're embarrassed to publicly ask a question, you can
email mefasupport(at)gmail(dot)com.

While the question about how many reviews need to be done to get notice, the
other question I had about reviews is still unanswered, namely:
When exactly does the Review season end and at what point do reviews have to

wording in your Important Deadlines is a little confusing so I'm not sure
just how much time I actually have to read and review stories. It would help

If you could answer this question at your convenience that would be helpful.
On another, but related, note: It turns out that Oshun and I are in the same
neighbor (Brooklyn) and are planning to meet today (Wednesday) at the
Botanical Gardens and hash out the Silmarillion lists together, so things
are moving along on that front as well.

Re: Approaching Deadlines for Authors and Reviewers Posted by Liz Warren July 18, 2007 - 3:52:26 Topic ID# 7989Hi Fiondil
It is a little confusing, because there are lots of deadlines when
different things happen with different kinds of reviews. Let me see if I
can clarify things.
You can start reviewing now (and mark reviews as Draft, Hidden or Final).
From 30 July, we will start to track your progress towards your MEFA
Recognition Target if you set one, based on how many Hidden and Final
Reviews you've written so far. There will be a message on your
"Overview" page showing you progress. As soon as the combined number of
Hidden and Final reviews you've written reaches your target, we will let
you know.
From 1 October, Final reviews will start to become public on the site
so that other people can read them. All reviews already made Final by 1
October will be published at that point, and you will no longer be able
to edit them.
Between 1 October and 30 December, any new Final reviews will be
published weekly. Once you have marked a review Final in this period,
you will no longer be able to edit it, even if it has not yet been
published.
Voting ends on 30 December, when all remaining Final reviews will be
published and all Hidden reviews will be converted to Final and
published. Draft reviews will never be published.
So, ultimately, you have until 30 December to write reviews and mark
them as Final or Hidden for them to count.
I hope that makes things a little clearer.

Very cool about meeting Oshun. How neat that you two live so close
together. I hope you two have a fun time mooting.

It's not so much that we live close together, as it is that I'm presently
visiting my brother who happens to live in Brooklyn. My actual residence is
China these days where I teach English. But it is cool that she just happens
to live in Brooklyn and all this is happening when I'm here.
