I tried creating an author group today following Aine's instructions
and kept getting an error message ...

but I still want to nominate the story ... could I get some help please?

You probably already did this, but are all of the authors in the data base as individuals? That's all that I know about it : )

Anyway, nomination 345 (Father Names) by Finch has a link that goes to

Hello all,

I've read some of the requests from yesterday's digest (2:26 am on
5/1), and sent Ainae some updates.

First, there's now a filter on the user's reviews. You can choose
draft, tentative, final, all, or (tentative and final), and it will
only show you stories that you have reviewed that fit those status
choices.

Second, I fixed a sorting issue. There are 3 or 4 stories for which the
titles are a direct quote, and start with quotation marks. These were
sorting at the beginning of the list. I figured out how to make them
sort correctly. There were also a couple with spaces at the beginning
of the title. These looked right, but didn't sort right. I edited them
and fixed it. One of the 'quote title' stories had 'curly quotes.' I
had to change those to straight quotes. If you use " or ', simple
straight single or double quotes, it will now sort properly.

Third, in response to the request for a 'letter of the alphabet'
selector:
I won't do that, because it's a lot of work.

What I did instead was created a method for searching the start of the
author or title, rather than just anywhere. It was much easier, believe
me, and should give you the same functionality without too much extra
work.

If you put a '%' at the end of a search string (on the usersBrowse and
storiesBrowse pages only), it will search for entries STARTING with
your string. 'M%' searches for authors and/or titles starting with 'm'.
'aRaG%' searches for anything starting with 'arag' (e.g. 'Aragorn').
Case is and has always been ignored.

Since you can sort by ID, author, or title, I decided that the search
should go by whichever you're sorting by. By default, it searches
author, title, and summary. If you're sorting by author, and search for
'm%', it will only show you authors starting with 'm'. This makes sense
to me as a desired behavior. If it is sorted by ID, it will show titles
and authors starting with 'm'.

The same basic behavior works on the members/authors page, but with
nickname/email address, except that there's no way to sort by email
address, so 'm%' will always get nicknames and email addresses starting
with 'm'.

By the way, if you all want, I can change the default sorting behavior
on the stories page. It now sorts by ID, which is essentially
nomination order.
1) Would sorting by author make more sense as a default?
2) Would people wonder why those numbers were there and not sorted
properly?
3) Would it bother anyone but my wife (Elana) to have this list of
unsorted numbers on the page?

Warning: When Ainae loads these updates, there are new strings, so you
may need to reload the language file (link found at top of every page).

As you may have noticed, I can choose to modify the behavior of the
site at any time. There are some things that don't make sense to change
(like things that require big changes to the data structure), because
there's danger of corrupting the database, and there are also these
1000+ stories that use the current data structure, but things like
sorting, filtering, or what data to show, and what column to put it in,
where I'm not editing data, just showing it, are relatively safe to
change. The worst case scenario has us reverting to the previous
version.

My time is somewhat limited, but within reason, just make the
suggestions, and I'll see if I can do them. I'll try to check the
database and update it when I do something, but I can't guarantee that
I will always do that. I do read the MEFAwards and MEFAStaff lists, in
digest mode, but wouldn't mind getting direct emails if you don't want
to bother the whole list with some of this stuff.

If there are any geeks out there who want to discuss geeky details,
feel free to write, too.

Hello all,

I fixed the CoAuthor Group problem. I guess I tested that mostly with
an admin, because it worked fine for Ainae, but not for a regular user.

Also, I added 'Have Not Reviewed' to the review status filter. When I
looked at Marta's database, I saw the 'Not' that I somehow had missed
before. I think the options now will be sufficient for everybody.

I sent the fixes to Ainae, and she'll install them sometime soon. You
may have to reload the language file again.

that says it has a Final CAtegory assignment or whatever, don't worry. Just
me testing. Once we're done testing, we'll reset them all until Check

Hi Mari,

Check out the "ineligible" database at
http://groups.yahoo.com/group/mefawards/database/ . This is where we
put all stories that were nominated last year, and also the ones we
have withdrawn this year.

You should search for the author's name, not the stories. Some authors
have asked that *all* of their stories not be included in the awards,
so searching for the title won't turn this up.

Is the the Ineligible stories database up to date? One reason I wanted
to check it was because I nominated a story that stayed on my list as
Incomplete, then it disappeared a few days ago and the author has
disappeared from the author listing. I thought perhaps she declined the
nomination, but thought that I had better make sure in case it is some
sort of glitch.

When I checked the Ineligible stories list just now, that story and
author are not on it, or am I just missing it? The story in question is:

Hi Mari,

Whenever I've withdrawn a story I add it to the ineligible database
immediately. Of course I can't speak for anyone but myself, but the
database should be reasonably up-to-date.

I'm not magickalmolly's liaison, and since she's no longer an author I
can't look up who was her liaison. But I've forwarded your email to the
staff list, and hopefully someone who knows what happened will speak
up. I'll let you know as soon as anyone explains what happened.

The code is currently ignoring the changes you're trying to make
(adding MEFA Member status). I've fixed it, and will send it to Ainae
the next time I update.

I'm in the middle of some other changes that are more complicated, in
preparation for checkballots season, so it may be a couple of days
before I send it.

As of this instant, I will no longer accept author permissions gathered by
nominators. Why because I have enough work to do already without having to
look up authors whose names in their e-mails to the nominator forwarded to
me doesn't match up to any of the names on the Author list, making double
the work for me. And I have an unreliable memory anyway. So a question
comes up asking why so and so's nominations aren't complete when the
nominator forwarded the information to me. Now I have to sift through my
inbox, opening every e-mail from that nominator to find this one author and
oh, while I'm at it I should check all the others because I can't remember
if I did them or not. And then I have to guess at the author's name. This
does not make me happy.

Besides, unless the nominator tells the author every bit of information they
are going to put in the nomination (categories, length, rating, subcategory
suggestions, etc.) the author's simple "okay" isn't enough to make the
nomination complete.

So, from now on, leave it to the Author Liaisons. It's what they
volunteered to do anyway.

There are moments when I'm dictatorial. This is one of them.

Hi, I wonder if anyone else is having this problem: On the MEFA 2005
site, if I select a story category like "Hobbits," the filter brings
me
to the first of 3 pages. But if I click on page 2 or "next," it
jumps
to page 2 of the entire story list. No matter what I try, I can't
get
to page 2 or 3 of the Hobbit stories.
Am I missing a step somewhere? I had no problem with this before,
just
in the last few days...

Hmm, I haven't had that problem. Interesting. I'll let Anthony provide
a "technical" answer because I really don't have one. But if you like
you can change the number of entries per page to "all", and this should
display all the hobbit stories on one page (instead of 25 to a page).

King Returns" at SOA. Thanks for your patience.

Thanks Marta. Actually I did try changing the number of entries per
page to "all," but it just gave me ALL the stories on the site! So
something is definitely wrong...or I'm doing something wrong.

e.g., on the nature of evil--are one of the most fascinating aspects

I was having the same trouble the other night...it would only show the first
page of multipage sorts.

And in fact, I just tried it...put Elves in the first category, said there were
56 entries, I tried to go to page 2 and it showed all the entries again
(1033)....


So it's not just you...

In fixing a different problem, I caused the filter problem you've been
noticing (filters go away on page 2).

I believe I've fixed it. If you notice any strange behavior, please let
me know. This problem may still exist on other pages with filters, so
if you see it, let me know.

The fix has been sent to Ainae, so it'll arrive sometime soon.

Orlando was good though, as was the actor of another favorite character of
mine: Dr. Bashir on DS9. Alexander Siddig/Siddig El Fadil!

I know that I lurk in the background mostly (maybe just about always)
but I find not only some of the best LOTR fic there but also
authors/authoresses(?)I have had the pleasure of reading. I started
looking for sites like MEFA when I found the LOTR fanfics since I
knew that I would find some of the best writings and writers there.
Some of the fanfic (at that time) did not appeal to me (slash) but I
am proud to say that by reading such I gained not only a whole new
reading environment, but also a new group of authors that I have
followed. My son was in Iraq for a whole year and wrote requesting
LOTR based fanfic since his roommate was a Tolkien "freak". At the
time I had just finished reading Eresse's Greenleaf and Imladris and
so I sent that to him. Before I finished sending all of it, I had to
go back and made 8 additional copies of each segment. Come to find
out that his Company's 1st Sargent was a Tolkien scholar. They
held "formal" Tolkien reading and discussion periods each week for
relaxation and I received a "Confidential and Personal" email from
this Sargent expressing his delight in the material. He also had
his misgivings at the beginning but came to realize that the slash
angle (his words) disappeared into the background. He did make a
cover for each copy of each new "book" that stated "This Material
Pertains to ELVES. The U.S. Army does not recruit ELVES. Your hair
does not come down to your waist or butt. You do not have pointed
ears, are immortal or heal quickly. The Army does not issue Bows and
Arrows, Swords, or Knives. If I catch you trying to immitate any of
the behaviors or fighting styles mentioned herein YOU WILL WISH YOU
WERE ELVES! He drew a picture of Legolas and Elrohir as they might
look if they were in the Army - complete with both types of weapons -
both the front view and back view. From what I could make out of the
pictures faxed to me, they are a hoot. When he, my son, gets over his
hissyfit and sends me the actual pictures I will scan then and send
the groups that carried Eresse's fics. This Sargent is an artist.
He made me promise when they go back at the end of this year I would
send more fics. Told him I would send stand-a-lone fics plus multi-
chapter and arcs. The Company Lieutenant was curious about what was
going on. Too many of the troops were not in the rec lounge. He
found out and I am not too sure I want to meet this man. Made me
promise that under no circumstances would I show what he wrote. I did
but also showed it to my husband. Talk about purple prose!!! At
least I did what I could to raise the morale of our troops in one
part of Baghdad.

Back to main reason for writing - would someone please send me my
logon and password so I can start reading. My husband is terminal
and sometimes the day doesn't end for me until just before dawn. Good
fic helps the hours pass pleasantly.

section what this means, I did not find anything.

Can anyone tell me what "c. No public URL (at any time during the
Awards Seasons)" means?

It means that if X nominated story Y, and the admins could never find
a public URL for story Y, then no votes given to story Y will be
accepted.

I think this rule exists because some stories get entered with a
public URL and permission is given during nomination season, and then
sometimes in the middle of reading season, after people have already
had a chance to read and vote on it, the author takes the story down.
It was deemed unfair to those who had already read it and voted on it
to remove the story from competition at that point unless the author
specifically requested it.

I'm sure Ainae will have a more complete or correct explanation.

Nothing Juno! Now the story is send off to the liaison assigned to the
author, who will check the nomination on valid url, whether it is
illegible or not, categories, rating and such. After that, if it isn't
a self nomination, the liaison contacts the author for approval (a
valid e-mail adress is important here). Sometimes the author wants to
see things changed and the liaison & author work together. When the
author is happy, the liaison completes the nomination.

If you change the url to an existing archive: make sure that it is
accessible for the public (not behind login screens and such) :)

"Wizards Sleep With Their Eyes Open" by Magickalmolly disappeared?

She and/or the story are still not in the ineligble database, so I am
assuming that there isn't a problem there. She appears now as an author
in the list on the nominations page, but not on the browse author list,
and the story has not reappeared on the list of stories I have
nominated.

As you said earlier, time is getting short, and if she hasn't declined
perhaps I will need to renominate it for some reason.

It means that your story has to accessible without logging in to a
certain site. So if you only have it on the members-only side of HASA,
it's not eligible. It would have to be posted to one of the sites that
don't require you to log in to view the story (FF.net, Stories of Arda,
Open Scrolls Archive, West of the Moon, etc.)

The summaries are different, but the URL goes to the same place. The
categories are also the same on both.

I am having trouble catching up with my e-mail from the weekend.
There's so much of it that Outlook keeps going Not Responding. I've
been trying to get to it all morning and it's continuously downloading
messages. I've had to shut it down twice, which means it probably
downloaded duplicate messages.

Sheesh.

So, please be patient. I saw that there were Author permissions
forwarded but I couldn't move them into the archive folder yet. I saw
there were password requests but I couldn't open the messages. I have
no idea what all else there was. I could only see about 12 subject lines.

Bear with me. I'm rebooting that computer in the hopes it will
behave. And if I have to, I'll take Outlook offline to sort through
messages and then back online to get more.

It means simply that if a nominated story's Url requires a login, it is not
eligible. Only sites that do not require logins are acceptable for
nominations. With the exception of Tolkien Online, which is ineligible no
matter what.

For example, if you have a story in HASA, but it has not passed the Review
process, it requires a login on HASA to read it. That's not eligible. If
it was accepted through the Review process , it is in the public side of the
archive and anyone can read it. That is eligible.

Just to be clear about HASA --

If a story is entered in a challenge, it may also be available without
logging in. This is true if:

1. The challenge has gone "public", i.e., it has passed its deadline
and at least five stories were entered into it.
2. The author set the story's status to General (not Beta).
3. The author selected "display to public" (not "members-only") when
they entered it into the challenge.

If you're a HASA member and have any questions about this contact me
privately (melayton at gmail dot com) -- I help out the challenge
managers there, and I'll be glad to answer any questions.

Anyway, these stories are publicly accessible (without logging in),
even if they've never passed through review.

Actually, "Legacy" doesn't qualify as a drabble under the clarified
rules, being 300 words. It was completed before that discussion.
Anthony tells me the proper channel is for me to contact my liason to
have it changed, so I'll do that.

Hi Marta,

Looking at this list it suddenly occurred to me that my Hobbit
WIP "All's Fair" should be complete by early June--well before voting
season starts. What would happen in a case like that? Would it
become ineligible? Move to a completed stories category? If it
stayed where it is, would it still be eligible to run again next year
as a completed story? (If not, I might want to withdraw it this year.)

When (if) it is completed, it will be moved into the main category.
IIRC, "All's Fair" is in Hobbits/WIP right now. So if it's completed it
will run in Hobbits, with other completed hobbit-centric pieces.

Yes, looks like all my computers at home are down (and the server is
one of the computers at home). Not sure why. Could be weather
related as we're having storms on and off here. We got hail yesterday.

I won't be home for another 2 1/2 to 2 3/4 hours. I'll be checking in
every once in awhile to see if I can reach them remotely. But the
power may have gone off for long enough that they won't turn
themselves back on.

Patience requested. I know it's getting close to the end of Nomination
Season, but there are still a couple days left and with all hope, the
server will be up by 3 hours from now.

Just in case you are on Special Notices only, I'm repeating this here:

I have lost my connection to my home computers, which means they must
have lost one or both of two things: internet connectivity or power.

We are having stormy weather here, so I'm betting on the latter. The
MEFA2005 server is a computer in my home. I'm at work. So there's
nothing I can do about it until one of two of my computers come back
(the two I can remotely connect to from outside my home network) or I
get home. I'll get off work in about 2 hours and it takes about 30
minutes to get home usually.

I'll try and get the server up ASAP.

I just made 10 banners for The Dead Marshes Award (in the Horror
category) and uploaded them to the Photos area. I can't put them up
on the MEFA web site until I get my computers back up and running.

So go to the Yahoo site if you want to see them. Also, I'm going to
modify the rules slightly to say that if you're within 5 pixels on any
of the dimensions, it's close enough. It's really hard to get them
perfectly sized.

I only made lists for those categories that were almost viable (3-4
stories) or barely viable (5-6 stories). I have your poem as being
entered in Gr: Humor/Poetry, which has twelve pieces entered into it.
So your story is in the database, it just wasn't listed because it has
so many stories.

Would you like it to compete in Gr: Crossovers / Poetry? I think it
might fit there, if it's a poem written in the style of a different
author.

LOL, Aine, this reminds me of a story that I heard when I was doing
tech support for my ISP. We were tracking down a man's problem -- his
modem wouldn't power on. He could see the modem was plugged in at the
power socket, but the cord went behind the couch, so it finally came
down to asking him to move the modem in case the plug was bad. When
he pulled out the couch he discovered their pet bunny had chewed
through the cord, ala the cat in Christmas Vacation. Lucky for them
the bunny survived!

Glad to hear everything is well ... I was picturing more tornados.
