I think this poll question centers around the purpose of the awards.
If you mean to act as a recommendation service for readers, a public
listing of nominations is a great idea. If you are mostly concerned
with gold-starring stories and writers, keeping nominations private
is less work for you and has less chance of inviting complaints.

By the way, I've been lurking here for a while. I'm viv (and

Hi, Viv! Yes, it does sort of center around the purpose of the awards, and
I myself am for making them nominations public. Why? So new potential
members can see how it works and be encouraged to join in. And so that even
those who don't join might want to read those stories and see what all the
hullabloo is about. So authors can see that their story was indeed
nomninated and join or not join and still see if it was put in the right
category and/or how it faired. These kinds of awards work best the more
voters we get. No one person can generally read every story. You may read
only 10% of all the stories. If we have 100 voters reading 10% each, the
likelyhood that all stories will be read by at least one pair of eyes is
greater. The nominations work as nominations but also as promotion. Of the
Awards, but also of the stories nominated. The main purpose of
comment-based awards is feedback. The contest is a strong but secondary
purpose.

finding distinct titles for the three awards per category. Having
subcategories and even sub-subcategories makes it much easier for
everyone to keep it straight.

I'm sorry if I seem hostile to this. I'm not. I just can't for the
life of me see why it's better to have a Gondor category instead of
a Men/Gondor subcategory. There would be the same number of stories
running for the same number of awards; the difference is that the
latter is simpler for people to wrap their minds around, I think.

Sorry but there was call for a Gondor category this year because Men/Gondor
had so many stories in it. It seemed to make more sense than Rohan or
Numenor since they had so few.

This makes it possible for us to have that flexibility. It shuldn't be too
hard to come up with three awards titles for them. Rohan and Numenor
already have some. We can use the ones from 2004 if necessary. Would it be
hard to find some for Gondor. We could go with places like the Pelennor,
Ithilien, Minas Tirith or Dol Amroth, etc. We could go with three known
kings. Or Stewards. We could go with the troubled family of Denethor,
Boromir, and Faramir.

Graduated categories just makes us more flexible.

Since we had a tie, with sizes 4 (Story of the Month) and 7 (Witch King)
receiving 3 points each, there's another--though shorter--poll to decided
the tie breaker. This one only runs for a week, so get your votes in.

Only 9 people voted last time. Democracy works best when there is
participation. And sorry, I didn't put a "no opinion" in this poll. If you
don't have an opinion, leave it blank.

Do you want a long flat award with enough space
for pictorial decoration and award text as shown in

to fit within the lines of your summary?

Or do you prefer an award that looks like an award
like "witch king"
but which might not fit into the space allowed for a summary?

For now I am undecided, though I know what looks better
for me, because I do not know how people use their awards.

Yes, they are nearly exactly the same height and if the 152 should win, it
will probably be rounded off. But the width of the two are not the same.
They are different by at least 50 pixels.

That will depend on how people design the awards. We're only decided size
with this. So don't look at what's in the example banners. Just consider
their size.

The size quoted is the size of the banners on the external link. I opened
them in Microsoft Photo Editor and did a Resize to check their pixel sizes
(I didn't change them at all). Then I posted them with their sizes.

So just look at the sizes and decide which size you'd like best if you won
the award. Vote for that one. If you're still undecided, don't vote.

We had a LOTR?Cross-Cultural subcategory last year. This is for stories
that have several races in them. You can't put the story under Men because

or is it

If I measure the banner on my screen
I get 9.2 cm W x 2.6 cm H
which agrees very well with the ratio 3.5 in 350 / 100.

For the "witch king" both URLs agree that this banner has the size
291 W x 152 H = 44232 pixel

I measured 7.7 cm W x 4.1 cm H
for which the ratio 1.9 agrees well with 291 / 152.

Could you say again which is the relevant size?:

Ah, you're right. I typed it wrong in the poll. the external page is
corred. It's 350W x 100H for Story of the month. I can't edit the
poll without throwing out all the current votes, so just take this as

person might actually nominate a story, not realizing it had already
been nominated. Mention two names, and it makes the author think that
story is liked more. Mention only one, and you have the problem of
which name to mention.

2. As an author, I'd feel the need to thank whoever nominated me.

For me, the significant point is that the story was nominated, not who
nominated it. But this isn't something I feel that strongly about, so
if the group decides to mention the name, it won't bother me that much
- it's just not the way I'd prefer it.

do feel free to discuss this here.

As for two people nominating, ideally, one should be checking what is
already nominated before nominating something, but it could happen, I
suppose, that two people nominate something at the same time, so it could
become an issue. Hmmmm.....

Hi Marta : )

They aren't the same place though - The Black Chasm of Moria is what Gandalf actually falls into, it's a place *in* Khazad-Dum, like the Bridge, or Balin's tomb. Khazad-Dum is all of Moria, the Chasm is that little part of it.

And even if that is being too pedantic, still it is the *sound* of the title of the Award that folks will vote for I think. They aren't voting for a location, they are voting for the actual name that they like, whatever one (if either) sounds best to them and fits the theme. If they like the sound of The Black Chasm of Moria Award they will vote for it, if they like the sound of The Khazad-Dum Award they will vote for that.

Just my opinion : )

the *place*, since we are naming award categories... I personally will vote
for three names that I think are clever and will work well together...

Hi Mari and Elena,

Thank you for the clearing up. I clearly am thinking about awards
different from most members -- I choose what I consider the most
appropriate to the category. Not to put down those of you who choose
any other way.

And thanks for pushing me to learn more canon. Learn a Tolkien factlet
every day and you'll be a happier person, I'm convinced. At least a
more accurate writer ;-) I really did not realise there was a
distinction.

As for the names, I think it's so ironic that thais is all coming out
in a question about dwarven homelands. Every time I read "Khazad
ai-menu!" I sit up a little straighter. Khuzdul, what we know of it, is
just such a powerful language.

Anyway, I think you two are right. So I withdraw my idea.

*snork* Oh, dear, I now have the mental image of the Bob the Balrog
holding Gandalf over the chasm, grasping him by the hood of his cape
pinched between two fingers, then dropping him and saying "oops". I had
never thought of the Khazad-dum sequence in quite that way.

I'm glad I'm not the only one. Besides the power of the language, I
think dwarves have the potential to be extremely sexy and Khuzdul is a
part of that feeling. (Somehow I imagine Khuzdul as being very deep and
sonorous, and so romantic, when it isn't a warcry.)
