Disappearing Wishlists? Posted by Elleth September 13, 2011 - 19:37:43 Topic ID# 11029
Hi,

has anyone else noticed the problem of stories disappearing from their
wishlists? I'm not talking of removing stories, placing them on the skip
list or taking them off via reviewing (haven't done any of that in a while),
but mine has shrunk from 200+ stories (I don't recall the exact number) to
now 45 with no apparent reason, and while I heard from three other people
that they were having a similar problem, still wasn't sure whether these
were isolated incidents or a bug that affected the whole userbase.

Hi Elleth!

Nope, it isn't just you. I just went and checked my wish list - which WAS at about 75 stories - and it now sits a a measly 1.

Not fun. It takes time to go thru and mark the ones I wanted to read. This is VERY discouraging!!!

The same happened to me and I told Aranel about it. It was some two months ago, I think. She then sent an e-mail to the group asking if anyone else had the same problem; I don't know if anyone replied to her back then.Ok, it is sort of comforting to see that the problem is not in me.

Hey guys,

I'm not quite sure *what's* going on - I don't have much of a wishlist so I
can't test things - but it seems like a recurrent problem. I'm sure Aranel
will look into it ASAP.

Just checked my wishlist. I only had 30 stories in it but now it's down to 28 and I haven't gotten around to actually reviewing anything yet. Luckily, I made a list of the stories in a WORD doc so I don't really care but it is frustrating because now I have to go and find the missing stories instead of having them conveniently in one place for me to look at. Hope the problem is fixed soon or we're going to have very frustrated readers.

I may as well chime in with everyone else. I don't know how many I had on my list (I haven't looked or been adding to it lately) but I know it was definitely more than 3 -- which is the number I currently have on my wishlist.

Hopefully they aren't actually missing, just being blocked by some stray code or something!

Wish List Bug Posted by Aranel September 14, 2011 - 12:00:33 Topic ID# 11038
Hi all,

I think I've found the bug that's been eating Wish Lists. There seems to be an error in the code that removes a story from your Wish List when you review it: it looks like it has been removing that story from everyone's Wish List, not just the reviewer's.

I've disabled that function for now, until I can fix the error, so when you review a story it will NOT be removed from your Wish List, you will have to do that by hand until I can get this function working again.

Sorry for the troubles!

Hi all,

Okay, it looks like the bug has been squashed. I've uploaded the fix and re-enabled the "remove story from Wish List when reviewed" function.

Let me know if you notice any other problems with this.

Thanks,

MEFA reviews in lj (and elsewhere?) Posted by mvoltfan September 14, 2011 - 13:35:51 Topic ID# 11040
I was recalling that last year, once the Check Ballots period ended and Voting Season began, the MEFA lj community began reposting the reviews in lj in the form of daily digests.

http://mefas.livejournal.com/2010/07/

I haven't seen those posts this year, though, so I was wondering if they were discontinued for some reason. (Policy change?) It's just that they were a pleasant way to browse the latest reviews via one's f-list, and of course they served as a continuing reminder that the MEFAs were in progress. (I don't know if they were posted anywhere else besides lj...)

Hi The Lauderdale,

We did decide with the new site not to keep on doing that. It was mainly a
time issue on the part of volunteers, and also a few comments I had received
from people that it tended to "drown out" more important announcements.

One thing we are looking at in the future is developing what's called an RSS
feed. This would *automatically* let you know when a new review is posted.
We could add this to LiveJournal so there would be an account that would get
a new post every time someone posted a new review to our site (distinct from
the [mefas] LJ community, but you could friend it just like you could any
other community). There are also services like http://www.feedmyinbox.com/
that let you have these updates emailed to you, and you can see them using
RSS readers like http://reader.google.com/ .

But before we can let you do any of that, we need to get RSS set up on the
new website. That didn't quite happen yet, but it's on Aranel's to-do list.
(Getting the website designed for this year was a *major* project, and with
all major project done by a single person, the bells and whistles often come
later.) So hopefully in future years we'll get back to having something
*like* how things worked in the past, though it won't be exactly the same.

Hi Marta,

It's a decision that makes sense, but for me it's a pity, because reading interesting reviews actually made me review more stories last year that weren't on my initial list.

Hi Nath - I agree, those reviews on my LJ Friends Page were a real encouragement to go and read some of the stories.

Although I know posting them must have been quite a commitment for those who did it.

Problem with review filter Posted by Brenda September 15, 2011 - 7:06:19 Topic ID# 11044
Is anyone besides me having a problem with the review filter? When I try to use any of the Search functions, the list sticks or doesn't allow me to click on a name/category and boots me back to the general review list. I'm using Firefox.

Sometimes. I'm using Firefox as well.

Also, sometimes when I click a new page I get a pop-up asking me if I am
sure I want to continue. It says something about the script that's running
being a problem, if I click continue it pops back up two or three times
before it lets me have the page. But it only happens on the MEFAs site. And
both problems only happen intermittently, which is why I haven't complained
about it. Sometimes the site works just perfectly for me.

Re: Problem with review filter Posted by Aranel Took September 15, 2011 - 15:25:43 Topic ID# 11044
Hi Brenda & Dreamflower,

The problem is most likely being caused by the page not being completely
loaded when you try to use the filter. The filter should appear inside a
collapsible "accordion" box labeled "Review Filter" and the select menus
will be on a grey background. If the select menus are not inside this box,
and appear on the white background, that means the page has not finished
loading, so they won't work.

The code is supposed to use a "buffer" to not display anything until it has
all finished loading, but for some reason I have not yet figured out it is
not working on this page, so it is displaying the page before it's ready.

Dreamflower's pop-up is not part of the site, but is a browser error, and
means it's taking a while for the page to finish loading (the page is using
Javascript to create the collapsible box and the review table). The table is
very large (it's loading in EVERY Review, not just the 25 listed by default
on the first page), so if the server is being hit hard, it can take a while
sometimes.

Until I can figure out why the buffer isn't working, you will need to be
patient and let the page finish loading (when the collapsible Review Filter
box appears) before using the filter. The filter works fine once loaded
(tested in Firefox, Safari, and Chrome).

Thanks,
Aranel

Hi Voirrey and Nath (and everyone),

So many people liked seeing reviews, I am willing to consider changing
things. Is there anyone who has the time to post reviews weekly? You would
be pasting them from the website into an email and to a Yahoo community. If
there is, I'll discuss with you how we can set this up so it won't
inconvenience the list.

Re: MEFA reviews in lj (and elsewhere?) Posted by Marta September 16, 2011 - 19:37:45 Topic ID# 11040
I've been talking to Levade about doing it, and I think it will work out. I
just need to answer some emails, which I can do tomorrow hopefully (am
travelling just now). Once I get that done, Levade can get started posting
reviews by maybe Monday, maybe even sooner. I will hold on to your names and
maybe come to you if she needs a few days "off."

I am all for anything that increases reviews, personally. Since I don't read
reviews by email, I don't think I realized how important it was to people.

posting of reviews to Yahoo + LJ Posted by Marta September 18, 2011 - 13:16:58 Topic ID# 11051
Hey guys,

I just wanted to let you know that Levade will begin posting reviews,
by email and LJ, in the next day or two. Thanks to everyone who let me
know how helpful this was!

--- LJ: reviews will be posted to http://mefas.livejournal.com/, under
the tag "review posting 2011." You can read them via that web page or
join the "mefas" community to have the reviews posted on your friends'
list. All reviews will be behind LJ-cuts, to make things easier for
people who prefer to read reviews at the MEFA website.

--- email: reviews will also be posted via email through the Yahoo
group http://groups.yahoo.com/group/mefa-reviews/ .

Levade will begin with the older reviews, posting about fifty a day
until we are caught up. Then she will post the new reviews that have
come in each day. So please do join one of those two groups, if you
would like to receive the reviews this way.

Marta

Add mine to the general voice of thanks. I don't follow them through email, but I do follow them in lj. Much appreciated, Marta and Levade!

Thanks very much Levade!  In the past, I've been tempted by reviews I saw on LJ to read stories that I might not have tried otherwise.

Cheers,

Displaying Spoiler Reviews Posted by Aranel September 26, 2011 - 13:03:29 Topic ID# 11059
Hey all,

I've added the option of turning off hidden spoilers in the reviews. So if you don't care about spoilers, you won't have to click the collapsible box anymore.

To turn off hidden spoilers, you need to go to your Account Settings (Members > Your MEFA Account Settings). Under MEFA Settings, it will tell you what your current spoiler settings are. Click on "Change Your Preferences", and you will be able to turn off hidden spoilers in reviews. Reviews will then be displayed like other reviews, except for a "SPOILERS" note at the beginning.

There is also a link at the top of the review listing (if you are logged in) that will take you directly to your spoiler settings page.

Please let me know if you see any problems/errors.

Thanks,
Aranel
