? missing Michael Martinez nominations Posted by elanor of aquitania May 22, 2005 - 18:19:42 Topic ID# 4390
Hi all,
I miss quite a few of my nominations of Michael Martinez' essays.

The system says nothing that the nominations
were withdrawn.

But the system now says that only
1282 stories have been nominated.

Yet I know that I had essays with numbers above 1300.

Between the last nominations were
"Them Dwarves, Them Dwarves!"
and
"A History of the Last Alliance of Elves and Men (Parts I - III)

Now only 4 nominations are left.
-The Men Who Would Be Steward
-Waiting for a King Like You
-Parma Endorion
-Celeborn Unplugged

Is this a temporary glitch?

My problem is that I know that I nominated many more essays by
Michael Martinez, but I did it on-line and I have no print-out.
Many of them were already approved by the author.
-The Men Who Would Be Steward
-Waiting for a King Like You
-Parma Endorion
-Life in an Elven Fishing Town
-Shhh! It's a Secret Ring!
-Moon over Ithilien
-Celeborn Unplugged
-Guess Who's Coming to the Disaster
This I know, because I notified the author of the nominations.

Were all these already approved nominations withdrawn
or is the database currently not up to date ?

Puzzled greetings
Elanor

I'll try this again, I screwed up the last post ...

Aine, I hope I'm not stepping on anyone's toes here, but I was Mr.
Martinez's author liaison, so I hope it's ok that I post a response
here...

All but four of those nominations had to be withdrawn after much
discussion between the MEFA administration and the author. It was
determined he was paid for those articles by Suite 101 and it was felt
that was unfair to the regular fanfiction writer. The four surviving
nominations he received no compensation for and have been deemed to be
acceptable for competition.

I'm sure I'm wording it wrong, and perhaps Aine might offer a better
explanation but the nominations were not withdrawn without much
discussion.

Hi Elanor,

The staff discussed Mr. Martinez's essays quite a bit among ourselves
and with him. Our concern was that he was paid for many of the essays,
including all of those written for Suite101.com before January 2002.
Since this is an award for fan fiction and nonfiction (hence our name,
Middle-earth *Fan*fiction Awards), the admins decided that articles the
author was paid to write are ineligible for the awards this year.

We emailed Mr. Martinez, and he verified for us that all except the
four currently entered in the awards were written for pay. We are
considering adding a new category next year for professionally-written
articles, but that's a topic to discuss in the post-mortem. I'm sure
you understand that we're all very busy right now with *this* year's
awards. If we add such a category next year, those other essays will be
eligible then.

Anyway, that's why some of Mr. Martinez's essays aren't appearing on
the nomination list.

Thanks,
Marta

Hi Marta and Leaward,
thank you for this information.
I didn't know that these stories were written for pay,
sorry. I even got not such an idea, sorry again.
Otherwise I would have asked him myself.

Thank you for this info also :-)
And I understand that you are busy enough this year.

Best wishes and many thanks for all your work
Elanor
who is happy that at least some of her favourite essays
by Michael Martinez were not paid for ;-)

It wasn't obvious. His personal website says that some of them are
paid, and we had to ask him to make sure we understood correctly. So
don't feel bad about nominating them. :-)

You're welcome. Please don't take this as me *promising* such a
category, though. It's just an idea that a few people bounced around
over at the staff list, and we'll need to discuss it in more detail in
the fall, after this year's awards are over.

Thanks for understanding. Hopefully in a few weeks things will settle
down, and we can all breathe and read some of the wonderful stories
that have been nominated.

Thanks,
Marta

You did fine.

I will say, I've been thinking about Mr. Martinez's request that we
consider a category for pro-writing next year and I am not really for it.
They get paid or professional recognition. That's not what fan-fiction is.
These are fan-fiction awards. I can see the extension to fan-nonfiction but
not so much pro-nonfic. But we can discuss it at PostMortem time.
