duplicate author names? Posted by Elena Tiriel May 15, 2005 - 5:19:49 Topic ID# 4259
Hi,

I was browsing through the nominations database, did a search on "Daw" and
noticed that there were 4 different variations on Daw's author name. Is
this a problem?

Just FYI, what I saw was:

daw
daw the minstrel
Daw the Minstrel, and
dawtheminstrel.

Hi Barbara,

That would be my own haphazard way of entering things into the
database. I'll try to go in and fix it at some point over the next few
days.

You might notice a similar problem with authors who use all-lowercaps
in their names, i.e., annmarwalk. The problem is that Yahoo
alphabetises by the ASCII value of the first letter, then of the second
letter, etc. So a name with a lowercase 'a' is displayed after *all*
the names starting with an uppercase letter. I started out putting the
names in as they were displayed at the database, then realised this
caused sorting problems and started to make the first letter
capitalised whatever the website said.

As for Daw, I think it's because I know her as "Daw" informally rather
than "Daw the Minstrel" from the SOA Yahoo group. I'm almost certain
they're all listed under the same author at the MEFA2005 website.

Hi Marta,

Yes, I did notice later that there was only one Daw in the drop-down box for
nominating stories. If I had seen that, I would have realized that there
wasn't a problem. (Love that literal-minded character sorting, don't you?
:( Especially on numbers: "1", "11", "111", "2", ...)

Thanks for the reply!

I'm glad there's only one name at the nominations database. That's the
one that would really *need* to be changed, because it could create
problems with author votes. Problems with the Yahoo database are mainly
an inconvenience. I want to fix it, but it's not likely to cause major
problems.

Hey, would do you expect from a machine that only thinks in 1's and
0's? :-P It's a bit frustrating at times!

Just checked for daw% and only saw one of her, so apparently this is fixed.
