Three new categories, thanks to Graduation! Posted by Ainaechoiriel May 21, 2005 - 20:33:06 Topic ID# 4360
These three categories have graduated. They were subcategories of other
categories but had at least 20 stories and were appropriate to graduate.
(Ex. B/T: Gondor is not appropriate. Gondor is not a time or book. B/T:
Gapfiller is appropriate. Books have gaps to be filled).

B/T: Gap-Filler
R/P: Gondor
R/P: Rohan.

Each of these needs Awards titles. As we did for the PostMortem we will do
now. But we are under some time pressure so it will be shorter now. I'll
take nominations for sets of Awards Titles (3 titles per set) until Monday.
Monday, after I get back from my lunch break, I'll make a poll (actually 3
polls) to decide which titles we use. 1 week polls.

So what titles should we use?

There, peeping among the cloud-wrack above a dark tor high up in the mountains, Sam saw a white star twinkle for awhile. The beauty of it smote his heart, as he looked up out of the forsaken land, and hope returned to him. For like a shaft, clear and cold, the thought pierced him that in the end the Shadow was only a small and passing thing: there was light and high beauty for ever beyond its reach.

How about:

For Gap-fillers--

The "Fortnight on the Way" (gap between Rivendell and Caradhras)
The "Wonder of the Shire for Sixty Years" (gap between The Hobbit and the proper beginning of The Lord of the Rings)
The "Into the Lone-lands" (gap in The Hobbit between the Shire and the Troll-shaws)

Just my two cents.

My suggestions:

BT: Gap-filler

1st: The "Crossing the Ice" Award
2nd: The "Journey Through Hollin" Award
3rd: The "A Short Rest" Award

(being three common sources of gapfillers in The Silmarillion, The
Hobbit, and The Lord of the Rings)

Another one could be: The Gap of Maglor award ;)

Clever! An alternate or addition: The Pit of Utumno.

Any other gaps, cracks, pits, or well-known fosses in M-e, before or
after Beleriand's submersion?

How about Khazad-dum? Doesn't Moria mean "the black pit" or something
like that? The other thing that jumped to mind is the Deeping-coomb in
Helm's Deep.

Hee hee! There is the Dreadful Gap in Moria that Pippin takes a long time to screw up his courage to leap over, but I don't think that Dreadful anything would be a good award title : )

There is the Black Chasm of Moria, otherwise known as the abyss that Gandalf falls into with the Balrog. The Black Chasm of Moria Award has a nice ring to it : )

Hear, hear! I like it. I'd thought that abyss had a name, but I
thought it'd be in TTT for some reason.

Gap of Rohan, Cracks of Doom, and Maglor's Gap??? These are *great* ideas
for gapfillers!

If you need more, others might be The Calacirya (the gap in the Pelıri), The
Shadowy Isles or the Misty Mountains, but I really like the first three
better...

The Uttermost Foundations of Stone? It even made Gandalf shudder...

- Barbara, Who thinks now that "Gap of Rohan", "Cracks of Doom", and "Pit
of Utumno" make a lovely trio...
