Several Announcements- Review Strategies; Banners; Call for Volunte Posted by aure\_enteluva July 09, 2007 - 12:06:10 Topic ID# 7968
Hey guys,

There are a lot of little announcements that I will combine into one.
These don't have anything to do with each other, and are in no
particular order.

1. REVIEW STRATEGIES

Last winter I asked several people who reviewed a lot of stories in
2006 to write down how they did it. What strategies worked, what
didn't, what would they do differently--that kind of thing. These
suggestions will not work for everybody, and you should certainly not
feel compelled to do any of these things unless you think it will be
useful, but hopefully reading over them will help you think of
approaches that might work for you. You can find these suggestions in
our FAQ section, at

http://mefawards.net/MEFA2007/index.php?page=FAQreviewing

If you would like to add your own suggestions please write them up and
send them to mefasupport(at)gmail(dot)com. The more the merrier.

2. BANNERS

Nautika asked me recently how to get involved writing banners, and I
thought some other people might be interested, too.

In previous years banner-making was competitive. Meaning that there
was a specific theme for first, second, and third place in every main
category, and that if more than one banner was made for any "theme" we
had a poll to select the "winning" banner. However, this year we
decided to do things a little differently.

This year, we're doing things a little less structured. You can make a
banner about anything Tolkien-themed that you want to. First Age
through Fourth, any race or character. Also, you can make "neutral"
banners, like with design elements but without specific pictures, or
you can use photos that aren't particularly fannish but connect with
Tolkien's universe somehow, like photos from the Hubble telescope or
pictures of the beach. Be creative!

Requirements are listed at
http://mefawards.net/MEFA2007/index.php?page=FAQbanners. Banners do
have to be certain sizes, and they need to have the phrases "2007" and
either "MEFAs" or "Middle-earth Fanfiction Awards" somewhere on them.
After the awards are over, winners can request a banner and we will
either add the category information for them or tell them how to add
it themselves.

If you'd like to submit a banner, do so by emailing it to
banners@mefawards.net.

3. CALL FOR VOLUNTEERS

I am looking for 2-3 volunteers who have been involved with the awards
in some capacity (even just as authors) in 2006 or earlier. You'll be
helping sort stories into their main categories and subcategories. You
need to have a fair amount of internet time and be available July
23-August 3.

I also need volunteers who can help come up with lists of characters,
settings, and canonical events for next year. Ideally I'd love someone
who reads and/or writes every major area of the fandom--for instance,
a Silmfic aficionado, a hobbit writer, and so on. Extensive canon
knowledge is not necessary (though it might be helpful), but you
should have a good feel for what writers of a particular fanon
"neighborhood" tend to focus on. What characters and so on would be
most useful? Email me at mefasupport@gmail.com if you'd like to help
out with this.

I think that's it! Promoters, I intend these announcements for this
group, but if you think your groups might find them useful you are
free to pass them along.

Hi, Marta!

I might be able to help you with the sorting if you still need someone. I just won't know for a couple of days if I'm going camping over the weekend of August 3 - 5 and if so that might mean I would be too busy then.

I would like to help with the character and settings part since I really see the need for that area to be more set, so let me know on that.

Are you still looking for an extra categoriser? If so, you can add me
to it. Just let me know.

Hi Rhapsody,

Actually, we have all that we need. However, if it turns out one can't
participate or we need extra help I'll come to you.

Thanks,
Marta
