Is the site down? Posted by Sharon December 06, 2011 - 9:55:31 Topic ID# 11073
I've been trying to post a couple reviews for the last hour.

I knew as soon as I posted this that the site would come up. Murphy's Law!

ADMIN - the end (of 2011 voting) is near Posted by aure\_enteluva December 09, 2011 - 0:18:19 Topic ID# 11075
Hey guys,

With the end of the 2011 awards just three weeks off, I wanted to remind everyone of two things:

****************************************

VOTING ENDS ON DECEMBER 31

The last day you can vote for the MEFAs is Saturday, December 31. If you want to enter any reviews, you must enter them by 11:59 PM on that day.

Remember: The MEFA time zone is based on GMT/UT (Greenwich Mean Time). This is *not* your local time zone. To figure out when voting ends in your deadline, simply check the countdown box in the upper right of the MEFA site.

Better yet, go ahead and enter your reviews now rather than waiting until the last minute. That way you don't have to worry about time zones. You also don't have to worry about the site getting bogged down by everyone trying to use it at once. It's better for all involved if you make sure to enter any reviews you have a day or two early.

*****************************************

CHANGE OVER YOUR DRAFT REVIEWS

If you have entered a draft review, you must change it to a hidden or final review by the end of voting. Otherwise it will not be counted.

To review:

1. FINAL reviews are displayed and counted immediately, and cannot be edited after you submit them.
2. HIDDEN reviews are automatically converted to final reviews at the end of the awards. They will be displayed and counted at that point. They can be edited up until then.
3. DRAFT reviews are never counted or displayed, unless they are changed to some other type.

Only final and hidden reviews count toward your reviewing goal, if you set one.

*******************************

And that's it! Happy reviewing, and I'll see you all on the other side.

Marta

reminder - voting ends this Saturday Posted by aure\_enteluva December 26, 2011 - 20:53:47 Topic ID# 11076
Hey guys,

(I may have posted this last night, but don't see the message in the group archives. So if it shows up twice, please forgive the duplication.)

Just a quick reminder that voting ends at 11:59 PM (GMT) on SATURDAY DECEMBER 31. Please make sure you enter your votes and change any draft ones over to hidden or final, if you want them counted.

Please note, this is GMT/UST, not your local time zone. You can see how much time you have left before the end of the awards by visiting www.mefawards.org and checking out the countdown clock in the upper-right corner.

Hopefully now that you have survived Christmas and perhaps have some time off work for the holidays, you will have the time to review a few MEFA stories. Consider it a pre-New Year's resolution to review a few stories this upcoming week. It's really not too late to get involved. :-)

********************

Also, I am always looking for a few good artists who want to make banners for MEFA winners. I'll be sending out an email to the current banner-makers (and yes, Ellynn, answering your email as well! - I haven't forgotten). This year's banners are available at

http://mefa-banners.livejournal.com/

and I will be setting up appropriate tags over the next few days. But in the meantime you can make banners and share them as a post to that LJ community. Banners for MEFA winners need to include the phrases "MEFA" (or "Middle-earth Fanfiction Awards"); "2011"; and need to either be tailored to a specific place and subcategory, or else have space where that can be entered. They can either use movie screencaps, your own fanart, art by other artists if you have the original artists' permission; or also use stock images like scenic ruins, landscapes, old books, or whatever.

We need people to make banners that can be customized as well as banners that are ready to be used. Also, don't forget we have the new awards, Smaug's Treasures. So don't forget about banners for that, either.

Hi Marta,

I noticed that the MEFA site does not mention "Smaug's Treasures" anywhere that I can find. Don't you think a description of this should be found somewhere on the site? Even us oldies don't necessary know what is meant by it and I've forgotten what it's supposed to be for and how it's determined.

Or maybe the information is on the site and I'm just looking at the wrong place. It seems to me the most logical places would be under "What's New for 2011?" and/or the description of how the first/second/third/honorable mention places are awarded.

Just a thought.

Hi Fiondil,

It's a good idea to make sure this is described on the MEFA website
somewhere. I will poke around tonight or tomorrow and see what I can
find about getting it added, or perhaps posted more prominently if need
be. :-)

For the record, now is probably a decent idea to discuss the new shiny
that is "Smaug's Treasures." (We had this conversation over at the LJ
site as well, so you're not alone!) The thinking is basically that in
any given year, some subcategories are more competitive than others. We
(the categorizers) try to make the subcategories as fair as possible
through making them the same side, but of course we don't know what
groups will have stories that receive a lot of votes, and which won't
have that.

So Smaug's Treasures is supposed to address that. We will give it to all
the stories that ranked in the top third of the awards, across all the
categories. So basically if there are 600 nominations in a given year,
the 200 pieces with the most points will receive a Smaug's Treasures -
no matter what place (or no place) they receive in their subcategory.
This is in addition to the same old 1st-2nd-3rd-Hon. Mention that we
always award, and if a piece gets more than one award, we'll let the
author choose which banner to choose.

Hope that helps! And I'll look into tweaking the FAQ as well.

Author replies and wish lists Posted by mvoltfan December 29, 2011 - 11:38:32 Topic ID# 11079
Questions for the Good Admin (plural) of MEFA:

Will the "Reply to Review" function still be enabled after voting has closed?

Also, will we still be able to put items on and take items off our Wish and Skip Lists?

Also, we can see "Read the Author Replies" when we are in "Your Reviews." For some reason I thought Author Replies become public at the close of voting, but the verbiage on the "Reply to Review" page says that "Replies are not publicly available" and doesn't mention whether they become public later. Wanted to check about this.

Thanks,
The Lauderdale

calling all procrastinators: the 2011 MEFAs end tomorrow night Posted by Marta December 30, 2011 - 23:06:24 Topic ID# 11080
Hey guys,

As of this writing, there are 19 hours, 24 minutes, 12 seconds left in
this year's MEFAs. that's time to get a few more reviews in. And don't
forget to give your draft reviews either a hidden or final status if
you'd like them counted.

See everyone on the other side!

Marta
