ADMIN:: Story Focus: Poetry Posted by Dawn Felagund July 16, 2009 - 14:02:07 Topic ID# 10117
Greetings, all,

This week's admin announcement will be the first in a series of announcements concerning some of the less common forms and genres competing in the MEFAs this year. This week's focus is poetry.

One of the great things about the MEFAs is that--although they are called the Middle-earth FanFICTION Awards--more than just fiction competes. However, these entries are often lost in the vast wealth of stories nominated for the awards. As such, we occasionally highlight these forms in admin posts so that readers interested in finding these entries may more easily do so.

Poetry was a big part of Tolkien's own writing. As a scholar, he studied Anglo-Saxon poetry, and as an author, his books are sprinkled with songs and poems. Many readers come to know some of the pieces--like Sam's Gil-galad poem or the Duel of Songs between Finrod Felagund and Sauron--by heart. Writers of Tolkien-based pieces also carry on his tradition in penning their own songs and poems about Middle-earth.

If you like poetry and songs (perhaps you are even now, to yourself, whispering, "Gil-galad was an Elven king ..." ;), you might be interested in some of these entries.
