2009 Check-Ballot - Version #2 Posted by Marta July 25, 2009 - 5:40:43 Topic ID# 10145
Hey guys,

Second version of the check ballots coming up. :-) I've corrected a few
errors authors spotted, both to where stories are placed and to the
names of subcategories itself. If you haven't done so already, authors
should check out where their stories are listed and let me know if you
see any errors. (If I already agreed to make a change, please
double-check that it's made below.)

Here's some quick check-ballot do's and don'ts, to refresh your memory.

--- DO comment if the main category isn't one you selected at all.
--- DON'T comment if you're in your second- or third-choice category.

This isn't an error, though we try to cut down on how often this
happens. There are lots of reason why this could happen. For instance,
there weren't enough stories with your first-choice category and of the
same type. (Remember, WIPs go with WIPs, drabbles with drabbles, etc.)
Or your second- or third-choice category wouldn't have had enough
stories otherwise. Or, if you had several stories competing, we
sometimes moved stories to your second-choice category to avoid having
more than two of your stories competing together.

But if you got put in a category choice you didn't select, this is
probably an error, and we want to fix it. (The one exception is if
*none* of your category choices would work; I would have contacted you
to discuss this with you before.) Let us know.

************************

On a related note:

--- DON'T comment if you have stories competing against each other.

Lots of authors have multiple stories competing against each other. We
try not to have more than two stories by the same author competing
together, so if you have *three* of your stories together, that we need
to know. But it makes categorization way too difficult not to have *any*
of your stories competing against one another. (Conversely, we won't
move your story if it means three of your stories competing against each
other, even if you request it; it's not fair to the other authors either.)

************************

--- DO comment if you're in a subcategory with the wrong type of story.
--- DON'T comment if your ficlet is competing against longer stories.

WIPs, poetry, drabbles, non-fiction, and stories all compete against
their same type. We depend on the author to tell us about this when
their story is nominated. If the author made a mistake, or if the
categorizers made a mistake in splitting things up according to their
type, we need to fix that.

This year, non-drabble ficlets were categorized with full-length
stories. Authors could instead choose to compete in "Genres: Ficlets."
This isn't an error, but is the author's choice.

********************

--- DO comment if you were placed in a subcategory that doesn't match
your selections.
--- DON'T comment if you see a "better" subcategory for your story.

If your story is a friendship piece set in Ithilien, and it's currently
in a Gondor subcat but you'd prefer it to be in the one for friendship
fics, don't ask for this change. We try to place stories in
subcategories based on the author's selections -- but when the author
has selected more than one character, story setting, etc., it's up to
the caegorizer which one it goes into. We don't usually make these swaps
because there are too many things affected by moving stories. We want to
keep the categorization flexible for those stories that really *need* to
be moved.

And if you didn't mention *any* characters, settings, etc., we have to
assume you are leaving this decision with us. In this case we usually
don't make swaps either.

Also, sometimes there will be a category "broader" than what you
selected. Maybe there weren't enough stories set in the Shire for a
subcat, but there were also stories in Bree or travelling toward
Rivendell. So we put together an "Eriador" subcat to cover all that.
This isn't an error, though the subcategory name may not be what you expect.

But if you did make choices and still find yourself in a subcategory you
think is inappropriate, let us know. It's possible the categorizers made
an error in how they entered data into the website, and in this case
we'll look into it to see if the swap is possible.

************************

In many cases, the easiest way to get into a category/subcategory you
like is to use the form more effectively, to tell us more about your
story, back during the nomination season. Which doesn't help you this
year, but learning how categorizing works can help you if you expect to
compete in the future. This is something every MEFA author has had to
learn how to do (including yours truly!). You can't change this
information now, but I can help you learn how to make better choices in
the future, so next year you will be in a subcategory you are happier
with. Please check out the following FAQs for some basic information on
how we use the information you tell us:

www.mefawards.net/MEFA2009/index.php?page=FAQcategories#cat_2
www.mefawards.net/MEFA2009/index.php?page=FAQcategories#cat_6

If you have questions about this, please ask. I will explain as best I
can, even if I don't agree to move your story.

Now! Here is version two of the check-ballots.

Marta

Re: 2009 Check-Ballot - Version #2 Posted by Ellin Revenger July 25, 2009 - 15:36:56 Topic ID# 10145
I apologize if I'll do something wrong about all those do's and don'ts, but I really feel lost in those categories/subcategories; I felt lost even when I was trying to fill out the form for my story and I asked my liaison to help. She did the best she could, but still I wasn't sure about some things.
So, what troubles me? My story is a ficlet. Now I really don't remember what subcategories were available, but do I remember that I regreted there wasn't something like "general", and I remember saying that to my liaison. And now I see that there is subcategory ficlet-general, while my story is put in ficlet-men of the north. Ok, Halbarad is mentioned in the story, but he is not the leading role, if I can say it that way; the story is about Arwen't thoughts as she finished embroidering Aragorn's banner and giving it to Halbarad. So, I think that the story should be placed to subcategory general: it has a little bit of everything: elves (Arwen), men (Halbarad), romance (Arwen's thoughs about Aragorn), character study (Arwen), and none of it is really dominating.

Ellynn

Hiya Ellynn,

First, my apologies for not getting back to you more quickly. I haven't
been getting to emails as quickly as I should.

On the "general" subcategory: I think you may be misunderstanding this.
The General subcategory isn't a description like you'd see at some
archives, for stories that have a mix of genres. (I know FF.net has a
"General" genre...) Rather, it's kind of a group for stories that don't
fit into any of the subcategories we were able to offer that year. Maybe
a brief rundown of how the categorizers sort stories will help.

We start by putting stories in their first-choice category. We then sort
those stories into Drabbles, Incompletes, and General (which includes
everything else). If there are around 6-12 stories that becomes the
subcategory. If there are less than that, we try to move stories in, for
instance, stories that had that main category as their *second*-choice
category. Or if there are only a few stories, we may move those stories
into *their* second-choice category. So Genres: Ficlets: General would
initially include all the stories that selected Ficlets as their
first-choice category, and that weren't drabbles or WIPs.

If, on the other hand, there are too *many* stories, we know that we
will need to split them up somehow. So we start looking for common
themes, like the same character or setting or subgenre (which authors
told us when looking at the form). That's what we had to do in Genres:
Ficlets: General. Initially there were sixty-one(!) pieces, not also
drabbles or WIPs, that selected Ficlets as their first choice category.
Obviously we don't want that many pieces to compete against each other,
it would be a mad-house. So I saw that a lot were set in Gondor or
Rohan, and put them together. Still others involved Aragorn, Halbarad,
or other northern Dunedain, so they went into a "Men of the North"
subcategory. And so on. The ones that were left over, that didn't fit
into any of the more refined subcategories I was able to set up, went
into Genres: Ficlets: General. By that time there were ten stories there
- a bit larger than some of the other subcategories but not unreasonably
so, and much better than the initial sixty-one.

(There are other factors that come into play, and Poems and Essays are
handled a bit differently; but that is the bare-bones version of how
categorizing is done.)

***************************

So: to answer your question, I don't think Genres: Ficlets: General
would give you what you're asking for. These aren't stories that involve
a good mix of genres and races, necessarily; rather they just didn't fit
into any of the categories I was able to set up. A few involve hobbits
(there weren't quite enough of those pieces to have their own
subcategory), and some more involve characters and groups that just
aren't that common. I think there's one about Sauron, for instance, and
another about animals.

I've read your ficlet (which is nice, btw!) and my personal opinion is,
if it were my story, I would leave it where it is. I'm not trying to
talk you out of your position, but let me explain my thoughts a bit: the
story is set around one of the more iconic moments in Aragorn-centric
fanfic: Arwen's preparing of his banner. It's a moment that people
interested in Aragorn and the Northern Dunedain like to read about. They
will be the ones attracted to a subcategory on "Men of the North." So
even though Arwen is the main character, I think it deals with her
relationship to the Northern Dunedain as a people, and so it does kind
of fit there. I think it fits there better than any of the other
categories I could put it into.

One thought that occurred to me: if it's the "Men" that you're
uncomfortable with (since Arwen's an Elf), I could rename the
subcategory "Genres: Ficlets: Northern Dunedain." Don't know if that
would work better for you.

If you still feel strongly that this isn't the right subcategory for
you, let me know as well and I will discuss it with the other
categorizers, to see what they think about moving it. (I'm not promising
to move it; I would want their opinions before deciding.)

Thanks,

Marta

P.S. - And thanks for reading all this! Sorry if I went on too long.

Hello,

and thanks for the very detailed answer. *hug*
I understand what you write about categorization, and I understand that it is a huge and difficult task to do.
Well, it is interesting to see how it's possible to interprete the same story in different ways. It reminds me of high school and literature classes. :) But I am still troubled about categorization of my story. You can say I'm grumbling (nitpicking? is that the right word?), but... yes, it describes a moment important for Aragorn, yes, it mentions Halbarad and Grey Company; but it's Arwen who is in the leading role (Halbarad is not even an equal in this case), it's Arwen who's emotions are described, it's Arwen's POV, not Halbarad's, it is her optimism and faith we see. I would never call this "Dunedain-story". After all, if I had wanted to write it from Halbarad's (or anyone of the Dunedain) POV, I would've done so.
Please, don't rename the category because of me; your suggestion (Northern Dunedain) still means Men, and I really don't want to be the reason for renaming the category.
I know you can't promise anything, I'm just asking you (and other categorizers) to think about it one more time, please.
Thanks for your time, bye,

Ellynn

subcategory "Genres: Ficlets: Northern Dunedain." Don't know if that
would work better for you.

Hiya Ellynn,

Sure thing - I can discuss it with them. I'll let you know what we
decide in a day or two.
