Reviews - now you see them, now you dont Posted by lissas\_elves September 13, 2009 - 8:50:22 Topic ID# 10196
I seem to have a problem viewing some reviews for my story: Half the reviews are missing when I log-in as 'Lissa'. However, they are visible if I enter the site as 'guest' so it's not like they've actually disappeared.

This happens whether I use the 'reviews left by others for your stories' feature or 'browse all nominated stories' and then filter for my own name.

Probably a temporary glitch, but as a friend of mine experienced a related problem with reviews last night, I thought it best to report it.

(For the record: I use IE8 and Firefox - problem is the same on both, not that I think the browser's got anything to do with it.)

Hello, Lissa.

Sorry you're having a problem! I'd like to try to figure out why.

The one thought that jumps to mind: have you ever clicked the link "Mark
these reviews as read and load the next page."? (I think it says something
slightly different if there's only one page of reviews.) It's at the bottom
of each page of reviews, and it would explain something I'm noticing when
looking at your account.

Remember that the website displays up to 25 reviews to a page. This means
that when there are lots of reviews (like when you're looking at everyone's
reviews), there can be many, many pages of reviews. The website also
displays the earliest reviews first. The problem, as you can imagine, is
that people would have to keep clicking past the reviews they'd read to get
to the ones they hadn't. As a solution, our original webmaster Anthony
developed something called "marking" reviews. The idea was, you could tell
the website that you were done reading a page of reviews and it wouldn't
display that page again to you the next time you read reviews. You could
still find the review if you wanted to, but you'd have to tell the website
to put it up. It's kind of like filing away an email in a folder - it
doesn't show up in your inbox, but it's still there if you want it.

If you clicked this link to "mark reviews" while you were looking at reviews
for your story, then the next time you read reviews, the website would not
show the 25 reviews on the page you had marked. If there were more than 25
reviews, it would show what had been the second page and all the pages after
that. It'd also show any new reviews you had had written. Since marking only
affects the logged-in viewer, those reviews you marked as Lissa would still
show up as the guest.

Do me a favor. Go into the mefawards.net site logged in as yourself, and
read the reviews just like you normally would. (It doesn't matter which link
you use, I don't think.) Click the "Show Marked Reviews" link just over the
filter (where you can select to show reviews by a certain author or in a
certain category). If I'm right, when you click this link it should show the
"missing" reviews with a red background. The website is doing exactly what
it's designed to do, though you're not the first person to get confused by
review marking. It's a very useful feature IMO but does take a little
getting used to.

If this *doesn't* solve the problem let me know and I'll have our tech
volunteers look into it.

Thanks,

Marta

Hello Marta,

I seem to have a similar problem. I saw absolutely no reviews for my stories. Thanks to lissas_elves I logged in as "guest" and noticed I have several! When logging in as Haarajot I again seemed to have no reviews. I never used the "Mark" feature you .mentioned in your former post.

Cheers, Haarajot

Marta,

thank you so much for guiding poor hapless beginners like me through the wonders of the MEFAs!!

I followed your instructions and they worked like a charm which means I actually must have 'marked' - and thereby hidden - those reviews at some point. *headdesk* Ah well, I probably won't do that again...

Thank you again for your help!

Lissa
