Hi!
We have four sizes for our banners: 350x100, 290x150, 110x70 and 100x100 pixels. For the next year, as well as for this year's winner-banners, I can make some 150x150 banners, so that can be our fifth official size. Why?
First of all, ffnet has that size for avatars, and if an author picks 100x100 banner, it appears blurry in his avatar - because only display is changed, and not the file itself, of course. And second, it is not much more work to do for banner-maker. When I made banners, I had made most of them 290x150 and 110x70, because it is roughly the format of movie screen shot (ok, I had to do a little bit of cropping, but only a little). Not all scenes were suitable to be cropped from rectangle to quadratic form (I hope I used the right expressions); but for those that were, I did the following: I cropped 290x150 pictures to 150x150, and then resized them to 100x100. And saving both sizes (150 and 100) really isn't much more work to do.
What do you say?

Hiya Ellynn,
My impulse is that this is a good idea, but I'd like to think about it when
things are a little less busy for volunteers. Can you make this as a
suggestion to our "wish list" for next year?

That way the other volunteers and I will remember to discuss it.

No problem! :)
In the meantime, if any author wants a 150x150 banner this year, he/she can simply e-mail me and express the wish for some particular banner. ;)

*Rolls eyes* this reminds me that I need to replace my avatar at FF.net, which I made Before they changed the size, and now looks like snot since ff.net decided to just Stretch things bigger without saying anything. Since a Lot of people post at ff.net the larger size Would be very nice for many people. Doing all square dimension images at the larger size in your PSD files, and just using the reduction feature in 'save for web' to create a duplicate in the smaller 100 by100 size is very simple
Quick general technique note for Artists;
If you Reduce an image, it is very important that you use the 'Bicubic Sharper' mode instead of the default 'Bicubic' mode; it effects the quality dramatically. I can give people more information if they need it. General rule of thumb on enlargments and reductions in PS though is, Bicubic Smoother for enlarging, and Bicubic Sharper for reducing, and IF you are doing a big change in size, you will get better results if you do the change in multiple small increments (about 10% at a time).

What is this year's site for banners? I appear to have accidently erased the
link.

Thanks, Marta. I didn't think to check the FAQs for the banner site links.
