move request - Earille's "The Imperishable Flame" Posted by telperion1 July 08, 2010 - 17:02:42 Topic ID# 10634Hey guys,
I'm following up on Earille's request to have her story "The
Imperishable Flame".
On Imperishable Flame, Earille said:
"It is because the Eriador/Shire part is actually not that consequencial
to the story; it is just a sort of epilogue. So could you please put it
under another category? Related to the Silmarillion, hopefully? If not,
something more neutral would work, I guess... but definitely not this.
(It could be misleading to readers.)"
I looked at this, and see why we put it in "Eriador or Shire." Under
Story Settings Earille listed Dorthonion but also The Angle which is
part of Eriador. What this tells us (the categorizing volunteers) is
that the story could go equally okay in either place. Similarly, there
were events and characters from both the Silm and Lord of the Rings
chosen. The characters were "Characters for Readers" rather than
"Characters for Categorization," but as there were non "Chars for Cat."
selected, there was no way to know one was more important than the
other, short of reading the story. (Which unfortunately we didn't have
time to do!) So while I see while it's not really an appropriate
subcategory, we did follow the information provided by the author.
What I'm going to do is do a *conditional* move. I will move this story
into a Silmfic subcategory (Genres: Drama: Quenta Silmarillion) - for
now. This move makes "Genres: Drama: Eriador or Shire" as small as it
can be and still compete. If anyone else asks to move, if it's due to an
error on the part of the categorizers, I will have to move "Imperishable
Flame" back in with the Eriador or Shire stories. The only other option
would be to totally disband the subcategory, and I don't want to do that.
In the future, it's best to only list locations if you'd be happy for
your story to be categorized based on that. This applies to everyone,
and is not meant as a harsh criticism of this particular author, by the
way! It's an easy mistake to make, but we *do* depend on this
information, and it's not always possible to move stories around.
The affected subcategories are:
***SubCategory: Genres: Drama: Eriador or Shire***
A Star in Midwinter (11): Cairistiona
The Fairy Wife (200): Daffodil Furrow
Hobbit Aid (633): Dreamflower
Yavanna's Gift (22): Linda Hoyland
The Last Gift (449): Nieriel Raina
All Was Safe With the Sea (223): RadcliffePotter
***SubCategory: Genres: Drama: Quenta Silmarillion***
After the Fall (482): clotho123
*The Imperishable Flame (582): Eärillë (AiedailWing)
Blessed by Fortune (578): Ellie
A Part in Great Deeds (417): Hallbera
A Long Time Falling (249): Himring
Envy (317): Larner
Different Terms (170): Lyra
Within a Dark Wood (386): Marchwriter
The World That Ends With You (179): Minviendha
(Asterisk'd story is moved.)

Re: move request - Earille's "The Imperishable Flame" Posted by melissa chandra July 11, 2010 - 4:42:22 Topic ID# 10634Profuse apologies! This is my first time at the MEFA's... So sorry... It will not repeat again, in my part, in the future. Sorry... And if anyone else would move to another subcategory other than Shire and Eriador, I would understand perfectly if you'd move "The Imperishable Flame" back to that subcategory. It was after all my fault, and you have been so kind to move it now...
Thanks, and again I am sorry.

Re: move request - Earille's "The Imperishable Flame" Posted by telperion1 July 11, 2010 - 6:36:52 Topic ID# 10634Hi Rey,
It's okay. I was mainly warning other people, for the future.
Unfortunately we can't always move stories, and I don't want people to
think we will always be able to - much safer for authors to understand
how we use the forms, and fill them out the best you can. (Which only
helps for next year, of course!) That is why I explained as I did. Not
to make you or anyone else feel guilty.
And as for "first times" - we have all been there. It takes a while to
learn how the MEFAs work, and I am glad to educate you, so you can make
the best selections possible in future years .
