finalized check ballot in files section Posted by telperion1 July 15, 2010 - 16:36:24 Topic ID# 10672Hey guys,
One member asked me to put the check ballot in a place she could find it
throughout the year. So I have one this. If you go to the MEFAwards
group, then click "Files," you will see a "2010 Categorization.txt"
file. If you open this you will find the checkballot, with the last
changes made in the next day or so.
The checkballot is a great way to get an overview of the awards. It
lists the barebones info on each story competing (name, author, and ID
#). The ID # can than be used to look up more story information at our
website. Just
1. Log in to www.mefawards.net/MEFA2010/
2. Click the stories link at the top of the page.
3. Do a search for the ID number, followed by the # sign. For instance
doing a search for "290#" would bring up
To be Black (290): Encairion
Obviously you'll need the website to read the story, vote for it, even
find out more information about it. And some people may not see a need
to use this check-ballot at all. That's okay. But if you'd like to use
it, it's there.

For everyone that's experienced problems accessing stories at HASA in the last week or so, I can pass on the message that I also posted in the HASA news:
*-*
HASA has been unstable the last few days. Tech support has been unable to identify the root cause so far, but is continuing to investigate. Until the cause can be uncovered and corrected, the site will need manual restarts after it hangs. We apologize for the inconvenience.
*-*
I don't think the problem is currently serious enough for MEFA stories that are hosted on HASA to switch to back-up URLs, since the problem is intermittent. If there's any change (for better or worse) I will of course follow up on this announcement.

Hi Nath,
Thanks so much for the update! I agree, this isn't a severe enough
problem for the MEFAs to change everyone's URL without their asking for
it. Though I'll repeat my offer to Raksha: if anyone does want me to
change out your URL to a different one, send me an email at
mefasupportATgmailDOTcom, and I'll gladly do it.
In the mean time, if HASA or any other site is temporarily down, I
encourage people to make use of the wish list. Just click the "Wish"
link on the right side of the page, and the MEFA site will keep track of
it for you, so you can come back to it later. I'll actually be doing
this week's educational post on Wish and Skip lists, so will talk more
about that in a few days.

update recent technical problems HASA Posted by nath kuijpers July 22, 2010 - 22:01:42 Topic ID# 10672Don't panic if you find you can't access HASA this Friday!
"As part of the ongoing investigation into recent server instability, HASA will be offline several times on Friday, July 23rd, to allow tests to be conducted on the ColdFusion server and the MS SQL server."
Apologies to anyone who runs into problems trying to read stories, but we shouldn't be offline for too long, so if you can't get there, try again an hour or so later on Friday...

Hello!
I started making winner-banners. So, a few notes about that. ;)
As for tags, I will tag the banners with the full name of the category (example: Genres_Fixed-Length_Ficlet_Gondor_or_Rohan) and the size. I will not add places; once you find your category, it is easy to find the place you need, just browse banners.
Size. Well, here I feel sort of troubled. For now, I am making only 290x150 banners, and it will stay like that (for most of the time). It is a little bit difficult for me to put all the text needed on smaller banners, and it would take me a lot of time. Besides, I am not a fan of small pictures with a lot of text on it. So, I will make banners of other sizes only by request, and not in "serial production", so to say. ;)
Background pictures. For as many categories as possible, I will try to make at least two banners, with background that is related to name of the category. Of course, there will be those for which it won't be possible, so I'll make such banners with more general background.
There are some categories that have some things in common, for example, Gondor and/or Rohan are mentioned in the several categories (they differ in other things, like length, genre etc.). For all of them, some Gondor/Rohan theme will be in the background. Now, I can't make *all* banners with *all* backgrounds, it would take me too much time. :(
But! :) As I have already mentioned in some other message, I keep all my banners in layered version. :) So, if you see some picture you like, but it is in some other category, and you would like that particular picture with the text of your category, don't hesitate to ask me. ;)
That's it for now. See you around on MEFA site, bye everyone!

Hi Ellyn,
Your banners look great! But may I suggest that you not post every place?
Just post one of each design in one of the placings to show what they look
like. Some people are stuck on low-bandwidth connections or older computers,
so loading 4x as many banners as necessary is a real problem. It will also
make it easier for everyone to search through the banners when more are
submitted.

Well, no problem about your request, but when the time comes, how will the authors take their banners? Should I send them by e-mail? Or, when the time comes, do I upload others too, so that they are all available after the results are announced? *unsure*
[Non-text portions of this message have been removed]
Hi Ellin,
Previously, the banners were displayed without any award category or place,
so it was wide open which ones could be used. There's nothing wrong with
displaying categories and places on the banners (I think it's a good idea to
show how text will look on them), but, as you mentioned in your post, an
author may want a different background for an award category.
I'm not really sure of distribution, as I've always customized my own
banners, but I just went and took a peek at last year's banners, and it
looks like customized banners were uploaded to a Photobucket group (
http://www.photobucket.com/mefa09w, password "aelfwine", if you want to take
a look). So I imagine a "Customized" Album would be created, customized
banners uploaded there, and then the author is sent the direct links to
their customized banners.
Is the procedure for banners different this year, where the banner maker's
are creating banners for particular categories?

Uhm, when I try to click on last year's banners, it says "page not found".
This is only my second year on MEFA, so I didn't know how it all worked for banners last year. From what you say, it seems that only plain pictures were posted, and then each author made his own banners?
I had one story last year, and I made a banner for myself; I didn't use any of the offered pictures, but I made completely new banner (that is, 1st, 2nd, 3rd and HM for that category), and sent it to NiRi who had been coordinator.
I know there are many people who don't have software for photomanipulation, or even if they do, they don't know how to work in it. So, that's why I want to make completed banners. Besides, I voluneered for it, which means that I want to contribute as much as I can. :)
Ah well, we have enough time to arrange everything. :)

I seem to remember that, in past years, winners chose a banner, contacted
the MEFAs, and a volunteer customized the banner with the category and the
place that the person had one. That way, there was only one copy of each
banner up on the website. Is that how it's still done?
Of course, people with photomanip software could use the bases to customize
their own as well.

Hi Ellin,
I had forgotten that each category had a specific set of banners made,
separate from the banners offered for customization, so that's my bad.
You're right about that. However, the problem this year is that Picasa is
terrible for displaying the banners, dumping the entire set on you at once
(Photobucket split them up with 20 per page). I suggest making an album for
each Main Category, or even by Award Category (depending on how many banners
there will be), so that users aren't overwhelmed by hundreds of banners at
once. Other banner makes want to chime in on this?
RE: Customization. As Dawn said, banner customization was done by request if
the author did not have their own means to do it. Authors would submit their
customization requests and we have "banner customizer" volunteers who take
the requests and create the banners for authors. Customizable banners should
probably be split across albums by category as well.

once. Other banner makes want to chime in on this?
Uhm, I guess it is a good idea to make several albums. Let's also wait and see what Neume says about this. If we'll split albums, I'll upload again those that I have already made.
As for making banners... I can go on like I started, that is, making banners for all categories (2 or 3 banners for each X all 4 versions-places). That way, if people will find what they like, they don't have to do it by themselves. And if someone wants something different, let him/her just ask. ;)

I am back on this topic, for I really like this idea. Instead of one huge album, we can have several. I tried to make a list of albums; each of them would be applied to one or more main categories. Number in the brackets marks the number of subcategories:
Genres: Adventure & Alternate Universe & Crossover & Longer Works & Mystery (7)
Genres: Character Study (10)
Genres: Drama (11)
Genres: Ficlet & Fixed-Length Ficlet (7)
Genres: Horror & Humor (8)
Genres: Non-Fiction & Poetry & Romance (8)
Races: Cross-Cultural (5)
Races: Dwarves & Elves & Other Beings & Villains (7)
Races: Hobbits & Men (7)
Times: First Age and Prior & Second and Early Third Age & Ring War (8)
Times: Modern Times & Post-Ring War and Beyond & Pre-Ring War (6)
So, even in the bigest album, and even if banner-makers upload all 4 versions for each category, the number of pictures shouldn't be over 120-130, which is OK, I hope.
I believe that several instead of one album will not make the search for banners difficult; quite on the contrary. What do the others say?

Hi Ellyn,
Sounds like a good plan! I think that will help a lot to split them up, and
authors will be able to go right to the categories they need. If they are
all going to be tagged by content ("Hobbits", "Rohan", etc.), that will
allow authors to search for particular banners across all categories.

Good idea, but for those of us who mainly make generic pictures for people to choose from, there should probably be an album as well. When I make a forest banner for instance, I'm just as happy if it's used for a First Age Drama as a Character Study in the Third Age...

Yes, I'm that kind of banner maker too. I don't do specific catagories, I do general scenic banners that can be used for plenty of different stories, personally customized for the winners.
Is there a way to set up a banner specifically for banners like ours?

Well, I guess we can have one album called "general", or something like that. ;)
But I don't understand what exactly you mean with your last question. *unsure* You mean one general banner for all categories, or...? *unsure*

*face -> palm* I meant a folder for the general banners. Sorry about that.
Though I'm looking over this exchange, and I'm wondering if perhaps it wouldn't be more appropriate to take this offlist to Neume Indil, the banner coordinator for this year?

Yahoo did something strange and ate my messages then spit them out much later.
Okay. Just wanted to mention there were more than one banner maker who didn't do banners by placement.

Hi neume,
I'm really sorry to hear about your family's loss. *hugs* As for
banners, I emailed you and the other banner makers an hour ago. So why
don't we take the conversation over there, when you're ready?
(This isn't off-list discussions or anything, but I do think it's
something many list members may not necessarily want in their inbox. So
I'd just as prefer to finish up the conversation privately.)

PSA: how to contact HASA Tech Support Posted by nath kuijpers August 10, 2010 - 14:15:25 Topic ID# 10672Hi all,
As we are having a run of technical problems at HASA, there will unfortunately be occasional errors and such for people using the site, but we are trying to get on top of stuff. In the meantime, if you do run into something, either a problem on one page or something bigger, if you can, please try to notify tech support.
Since addresses are not at hand should the site be down, I'm posting a link to this month's 'How to' news at LJ, so people can find the address.
HASA LJ is here: http://community.livejournal.com/hasalj/
For anyone reading for the MEFAs at HASA, we're glad if you can let us know if you run into any problems, though of course we'd rather you didn't have them.
