Hey guys,
This week I wanted to talk about three things our website does, that
helps you manage the lists of reviews and nominations. But first, two
quick reminders:
1. You can read reviews posted to our website by email if you prefer.
Annmarwalk posts them to the Yahoo group [mefa-discussion] and the LJ
community [mefas]. Join either group if you want to read reviews by
email or on your LJ friends list.
2. You can set a reviewing target if you like by visiting our website.
Make sure you enter your goal by August 15 if you plan on using this
feature.
Now, on to keeping rack of nominations and reviews. There are currently
606 nominations in the awards, and 844 reviews that are currently
visible. That can seem overwhelming if you want to read either all the
stories or all the reviews. And it *is* a bit overwhelming - so much so
that you could not get involved at all because you don't know where to
start. The MEFA site offers three tools to help you deal with this.
*****************************
WISH AND SKIP LISTS FOR NOMINATIONS
You can add stories to your wish and skip lists easily enough. Just
--- Log in to www.mefawards.net/MEFA2010/
--- Click on the "Stories" link at the top of the page.
--- Find the story you want to add to your wish or skip.
--- Click the "Wish" or "Skip" link on the right side of the page.
Stories on your skip list are not shown to you again, unless you ask the
website specifically to see skipped stories. (See below.) "Wish list"
stories show up with all the other stories, but you can also tell the
website to display your wish or skip list specifically. This is a great
way to keep track of stories you want to read, but that you don't have
time to read at the moment. (It an also be used if the site where a
story is hosted is down temporarily.)
******************************
PULLING UP YOUR WISH/SKIP LIST
If you want to see the stories you have added to your skip lists, then
--- Log in to www.mefawards.net/MEFA2010/
--- Click on the "Stories" link at the top of the page.
--- Click the "Show Filter" link.
--- Make sure none of the filters have anything selected. Click "Clear
All Filters" if necessary."[*]
--- Select "Skip" from the "Review Status" option.
--- Click "Display selected nominations."
This will bring up those stories previously put on your "Skip" list. You
can bring up your "Wish" list the same way, by selecting "Wish" instead
of "Skip" on the next-to-last step.
([*] This step is important whenever using the filters. If you select
options from more than one filter, the website only shows you stories
that meet both criteria. It also "remembers" your choices since you've
been logged in. To make sure you are seeing all pertinent nominations, I
recommend you click the "Clear All Filters" button if you have used the
filters before since logging in to the website.)
*******************************
REMOVING A NOMINATION FROM YOUR SKIP/WISH LIST
When you enter a review, it automatically removes a story from your skip
list. However, you may decide you want to read a story after all, or
that you don't want it showing up on your wish list. If so, just pull up
the wish or skip list as described above. Once that's pulled up, click
the link on the "Remove from Skip/Wish List" on the far right side of
the page. This will make it like you had never clicked "Sip" or "Wish"
in the first place.
Don't worry - your wish and skip lists are only visible to yourself and
other top-level volunteers like myself. And we won't look at them
without a good reason. So you can add a story to your wish or skip list
without worry of offending the authors.
********************************
MANAGING REVIEWS - THE MARKING FEATURE
The wish and skip lists help you find nominations you want to read (or
don't want to read). But what about reviews. There are 800+ reviews now,
and that number will be growing. And the website displays the oldest
reviews last. Luckily, there are ways to help you find your unread
reviews more easily.
The most useful of these is the "Marking" feature. Reviews are displayed
twenty-five to a page. At the bottom of each page, you will see a link
to "Mark these reviews as read and load the next page." If you click
that, the website will "Mark" those reviews for you. Then the next time
you come to the webpage, the first reviews you see will be the oldest
ones *you haven't marked*.
********************************
READING MARKED REVIEWS
Did you mark some reviews that you now want to see again? The marking
feature works kind of like the "skip" feature for reviews: they aren't
shown to you when the website first loads, but they are still there so
you can pull them up if you want to. To do this, go to the reviews
section of the website and click the "Show Marked Reviews" link. This
will show all the reviews, oldlest first, whether they are marked or
not. Marked reviews will be on a pinkish/reddish background, while
unmarked reviews will have a blue background.
*********************************
P.S. - New this year, you can add stories to your wish or skip list
directly from the reviews section. If you're reading reviews and
someone's review intrigues you, so you want to read the nomination and
maybe vote for it yourself, just click the "Add to Wish List" or "Skip"
link into the review header. You will then find them by using your wish
or skip list in the Stories section.
