Hey all -
I have to ask, when browsing 2011 nominations, is there a way to sort (not filter) by ID# or Author(s)? I ask because, when I pass my mouse over the column headers, my cursor indicates that they are clickable, but when I click them they don't actually do anything. I was hoping for the option of browsing down a complete list of stories alphabetically by Author, but this doesn't seem doable. My other option is filtering by one author at a time, although not all authors listed in the filter have stories associated with them...
Apologies if this has been addressed elsewhere or if there is something I am not doing correctly.
Thanks,
Lauderdale

Hi Brandy,
What is an example of something you are searching for that it's coming up
with No Result? Let me know all of the search criteria you're selecting, and
I'll see if there's a bug somewhere.
Thanks,

Hi Lauderdale,
That is a quirk of the table plug-in that the column headers show as a link
even when sorting is turned off. I don't have a way to fix that, though I
may be looking at getting a new table plug-in anyway.
The columns are not sortable because in order for this plug-in to initially
have a random listing, sorting has to be turned off. We have to have a
random listing for fairness, so that is also something that may be fixed
with a new plug-in, but I cannot change right now.
Sorry for the troubles,
Aranel

I think one thing that is so confusing, it the different times periods with in the works. To me it is way too drawn out. Instead of simple stuff like : PreWOTR, Age of Trees, or Post WOTR, or something like that...it is more detailed with all the different age periods and events. The list is really long and hard for me to dicipher what time I want the story in. Or if I just want only Haldir Stories.
Maybe it is just me and being a newbie in the whole award thing.

Hi Aranel:
Just wanted to say that I noticed and liked the random listing aspect, because I do think that is good in terms of fairness. It would be nice if it were a default that the individual visitor could change as (s)he wishes, but c'est la vie, and so long as I have my ability to filter individual authors, I can do nicely.
Thank you for answering my question, and my compliments on the site, which is beautiful to look at as well as being useful.

Hi Brandy,
For Times, you do not have to select the specific events, you can just
select, for example, "Third Age" without selecting any events. The reason
there are so many events is so that authors can list specific subjects of
their stories. We may be able to add more general subcategories to events
(such as "Age of Trees") to the listing in the future, but it won't be
possible this year. I'll add it to the list of things to consider for next
year's site.
For Characters, if you want Haldir stories, select "Elves", then "Other
Elves", then "Haldir", but don't select any other criteria in order to get
everything with Haldir as a character.
Does that help? Are the instructions on the page confusing? I can add more
search examples, if needed.
Thanks,
Aranel

Hi Lauderdale,
Marta reminded me of a method the old site used that I may be able to use
here to get around this "random vs. sorting" problem, so I may be able to
add sorting to the table again. It may be a couple days before I get to it
(and there's no guarantee it will work), but I'll see what I can do with it.
I'll let you know if I get it working.
Thanks,
Aranel

Re: MEFA 2011 Nominations Posted by Ellin Ithilwen July 19, 2011 - 2:08:15 Topic ID# 10889There is a way to sort things by ID and/or author and/or story name; some time ago, Aranel explained how. It requires some work, but it can be done. The solution: wish list.
A word about my reading preferences. ;) In the previous years, I never made the wish list. Of course, I prefer certain characters/genres over the other, but I always wanted to give *all* stories a chance. For example, I am not very fond of drabbles or hobbit-stories (sorry, hobbit fans :) ), but I won't skip such stories. When reading&reviewing, I first read summary and other details of the story, take a look at the beginning, and then decide if I'm interested to go on (this only applies to the stories I am not familiar from before, of course; there are many that I remember reading during the year).
So, I always used to sort nominated stories by ID, and I went from one to another, one by one. That is the way that suits me the most. I didn't want to skip something.
And what do we have this year? A list that can't be sorted alphabetically or by ID. And I just have to sort it that way. So, when Aranel said that wish list was sortable, I decided to put all stories to my wish list. Yes, as I said, it takes some work and time (but not all that much; I think that it was not more than half an hour); also, one might argue that that is not what wish list is for. But it works fine for me. ;) Each of us has her own way that suits her best; I really like my way of sorting and reading, it is the best and easiest way for me.
So, Lauderdale, that is what you can do if you want. ;) If Aranel makes something new in the software, all the better. But even if she doesn't, there still is a solution, as you see. ;)
Hope this mail was helpful.

Thanks,
Aranel

While talking about filtering etc. I'm sorely missing the filter "Not on wish or skip list".
In previous years we had a filter that would only show stories that were not on my wish or skip list. I used that in the beginning of the awards to sort the stories as they come in. I don't have the time to do it in one sitting and this filter gave me the opportunity to go on from where I last left off sorting.
This year stories on my wish list always show up on my nomination list. I can't get rid of them to see what else is there. I'm never able to read all that is on my wish list, but at least I knew that I looked at all stories to see whether I would even attempt to read them. I gave up on that approach to look at least at all stories. Now I rely on the randomization to show me something that I would like to read in my limited time. If I don't find something on the first page of nominations, I just reload the page.
If that filter could be added again, I would be happy. Sorry, I didn't notice it through the beta process.

Hi Chris,
I've added a checkbox to the Nomination Listing filter to exclude Wish List
items (Skip List items are already excluded by default). Let me know if you
notice any problems (I just gave it a quick test).
Thanks,
Aranel
