the MEFAs need YOU! Posted by Marta June 20, 2012 - 22:06:09 Topic ID# 11128
Hey guys,

I'm still looking for volunteers for the 2012 MEFAs. If you haven't
volunteered and want to help out, I'd certainly appreciate the hand!
Let me know now and I can help get you ready to pitch in.

1. First and foremost, we need LIAISONS. Your job here is just to help
authors get ready to compete. That means first checking that the story
is eligible to compete and then you deliver the good news to the
author and walk them through the process of filling out the forms
describing their stories. It helps to have participated in a previous
year so you have a basic feel for how the awards work. More important,
you need time to answer emails fairly regularly and an encouraging
personality.

Currently ANGELICA, DREAMFLOWER, ELLISKA, INKLING, and LINAEWEN have
agreed to be liaisons. Want in? We really could use a few more
liaisons.

2. We could also really use some banner makers. You just create
graphics to help people share their good news - that they've been
nominated, have won an award, or reached their reviewing goal. Don't
feel like you have to be a world-class artist to do this; I've helped
out and I'm hardly an artist. (I used MS Paint to make the banners,
IIRC...) And you can create as many or as few banners as you'd like. I
just need to know you're interested so I can keep you in the loop.

Currently ELLIN ITHILWEN, NATH, and UVATHA THE HORSEMAN have agreed to
be banner makers. Anyone else care to dust off their digital
paintbrushes?

3. We also need a few more people for the ratings panel. Basically,
here you only have to read stories where the author isn't sure what
rating to give it. (For longer stories, the author will point you to
specific scenes and describe the context leading up to and following
away from it.) I'll give you guidelines and you just have to say what
you think the rating should be. It's a great way to give back to the
MEFAs - after all, how often do you get to read smut and consider it
your good deed of the week? ;-)

Right now NEUME INDIL, RAKSHA THE DEMON, and SULRIEL have all signed
up. We need at least one more, and I'd love to get some more on board
so we can have two boards going on at once (meaning each would only
have to read half as many stories). Anyone else insufficiently
reluctant?

4. So far I have people promoting at the following places:

http://www.openscrolls.net/
http://www.silmarillionwritersguild.org/
http://www.henneth-annun.net/

And the Yahoo groups: Henneth_Annun, SilmarillionWritersGuild,
councilsatrivendell, blind-sf, books4theblind, blind-chit-chat, and
aragornangst

If you know of somewhere else that you'd like to see MEFA-related
annoucements, just let me know where. I'll send you along
announcements to make there - it's really just a matter of forwarding
them on to your respective group.

********************************

If you want to help out in any of these areas, PLEASE let me know
ASAP. Also if you've volunteered and I overlooked you, let me know
that, too. I've received several emails these last several days and
it's possible I've overlooked one or two. Just comment here or send me
an email to mefasupportATgmailDOTcom.

Also: we're also trying to raise funds to cover the hosting costs for
our website. We've currently raised $66.40 - halfway to our costs for
a year's worth of webspace. If you haven't donated and would like to
you can do so here: http://bit.ly/KR1EsU.

That's it for now! Hope everyone else is looking forward to the MEFAs
as much as I am.

Marta

Hi Barbara,

I had a feeling I was forgetting some promoter - Cathleen actually
already volunteered for this but because gmail lists all the messages
in a single thread I had skipped over it when putting my list
together.

So I actually have GFIC covered. (And Cathleen, I'll reply to your
email shortly.) Thanks for the offer, though!

Hi Marta,

If you don't need a world-class artist, I can help with the banners. I'd just need some technical details and I can create some banners before the end of the month. :)

Hi Natalie,

Being a world-class artist is entirely optional - all we ask is for your
best effort. I'll email you and the other banner-makers in the next day or
two with all the details on getting started.

Marta, I've helped with banners before, but my work was very basic compared to and I was far less prolific than the other banner makers. Having said that, let me know if you'd like me to pitch in.

Hi Marta,  I don't really have any time right now,  but I did make a very small handful of nominee  banners this evening from some of my own art work.  Is there someone that I could send them to so that they can be uploaded and tagged when it is time for them to be posted?

Hi Nautika,

Thanks for volunteering! Banners don't need to be expert or anything; I'm
sure the authors and reviewers will appreciate the effort. (They let me
make banners from time to time, which should tell you a thing or two about
artistic minimum standards. *g*)

I'll be in contact with you and the other banner-makers, probably later
today.

Hi Cactuskim,

So sorry it took me a while to get back to you. You can send me any banners
you have to mefasupportATgmailDOTcom. I'm still working on where they'll be
posted. But I'll get them uploaded for you when I figure that out.

If you like, I can also add you to my email list of potential
banner-makers. You wouldn't have to make more, but it would let me keep in
touch with you. On the other hand, if you want to make this a one-time
thing, I won't contact you again. Just let me which way you prefer when you
email me.

IE / Firefox problems with clock - countdown on MEFA site Posted by Ellin Ithilwen June 30, 2012 - 15:19:21 Topic ID# 11128
I use both IE8 and Firefox. A little while ago, I went to MEFA site on IE8, and there is a message: "Attention Internet Explorer Users: IE is unable to display some elements of the site. Until a fix can be found, please set Document Mode to "IE9 Standards" in the IE Developer Tools, or use another browser (Chrome, Firefox, Opera, or Safari)."

And I thought - OK, if there are any problems with IE, I can go to MEFA site with Firefox only. So, I started Firefox, and what did I see? While on IE8, the countdown showed the time properly, that is, 3 hours and some 40+ minutes until the season starts. But on Firefox, the countdown says that there are 2 days, 3 hours and 40+ minutes left! *confused*

Am I the only one with this problem, or is anyone else seeing the same?

Ignore my previous mail Posted by Ellin Ithilwen June 30, 2012 - 15:22:40 Topic ID# 11128
Ok, maybe seconds after I sent my previous e-mail, Aranel sent her e-mail about the delay of the season. Looks like I started both browsers just when she had been working on the site, so I had two different time displays. After reading her e-mail and refreshing IE8, everything is fine as for the countdown.

Hi Ellyn,

I just left a post: we are experiencing some database problems today that
we need to contact our host's tech support about.

The start of the awards will be delayed until Tuesday.

Thanks,
Aranel

No problem Marta,

I wish that I had more time for things like this,  but RL and some other projects as well as my own group have me pinned down pretty hard much of the time,  but I wanted to contribute something,  and hope that people enjoy the banners I was able to make for them.  Don't know if I will have the time at the end of the awards to alter things for the winners and reviewers awards, but I am keeping my layers in case I do have the time,  so feel free to drop me a line,  and hopefully it will all work out.
