Kind of stupid question here. Help me out, please! Posted by fourth\_moon July 11, 2004 - 20:08:10 Topic ID# 1942
*feeling kind of foolish*

I've been a good girl and read my way through the rules. Most of it.
As far as I get it, positive feedback adds points for a story,
negative deducts points. The more detailed the feedback, the more
points.

But how do I write the feed-back? I got to the listing of stories, but
none of them is a link. Where are the review buttons hidden?

Something else... there was a message that help to count out votes
would be useful. What exactly has to be done for that? How much time
would that take? Because I'd like to help, but I don't want to end up
going back on that offer because I find I don't have the time.

thanks!

Hello, Fourth Moon. I'm sure someone will correct me if I'm wrong, but...

Not exactly. All feedback gives positive points. there are no negative
points. If you don't like a story, don't vote on it. If you *do* like
it, write a lot of feedback. But however much you write, even negative
feedback, the story will get that number of points.

You don't vote now. There will be av oting period in a few months' time
when you can do that.

For now, feel free to write the fedback, but hold on to it. I'm saving
mine in a word file on my computer.

When the time comes, I think you'll just make a post to this Yahoo group.

Actually, negative feedback doesn't deduct (unless there was a big change in
this that I'm not aware of!) ALL feedback affects the voting positively
because only the characters are counted, not whether it was good or bad
feedback, only the amount.

If you go to the web page (here: http://home.earthlink.net/~ainae/mefa/ )Click
on Final nominations, then each category. They link directly to the stories.
There are no review buttons since each story is hosted at different sites. You
should write the feedback and keep it in a notepad or word file. When it comes
time to vote, you'll get a ballot in the mail. You paste the feedback for that
story right onto the ballot. Then the feedback from the ballots will be
counted.

I don't know how long it will take, but the more we have, the less time it will
take each of us...*grin*

Marta answered these questions. Basically, I know HTML. Basically. I don't
know it enough to make online web voting possible. So we'll vote the way we
did at Alt.StarTrek.Creative before we got the web geniuses on board: by
post. So there will be a ballot (once Voting Season comes) for each
category. You'll basically "reply" to the ballot post with your comments.

"Voting early" as I advise is just as Marta said. Write the comments
somewhere but hold onto them. Then you don't have to try and remember every
story you read come October and Voting Season. You'll just be able to paste
in the comments you wrote when your memory was fresh.

Again, I don't have the know-how to build a program to count characters as
the geniuses at ASC do. But there is still an easy option. Most word
processing programs have a Word Count feature. That usually also gives you
character count. In MS Word, for example, you click the Tools menu and then
Word Count and you'll see word count, character count (with and without
white space) and other statistics. We want character count without white
spaces for our purposes.

So you'll just copy a comment (nothing more than the actual comment) into
Word (or another such program) and then look at the character count without
white space. Log it, and give it the appropriate point value (from the
chart in the FAQ which I will make more convenient when the time comes).

I hope to have at least two, hopefully three, volunteers counting each
category (that doesn't mean I need 32 or more counters. Each counter will
count 2-4 categories. They'll just have different partners in each one.
Basically, we just want at least two pairs of eyes on each comment so that
we can compare the count and thus verify its accuracy.

We'd love your help!

Nope, nothing has changed there. Just think of the old saying: If you can't
say anything nice, don't say anything at all.

Yep!

Certainly will! We'll have 2 1/2 for voting and two weeks to count the
votes. Of course, we can be counting the votes during voting season just as
we kept gathering nominations into the stables and spreadsheets during
Nomination season and then worked out the results during Check Ballot
Season.

Counting votes Posted by fourth\_moon July 12, 2004 - 8:53:27 Topic ID# 1942
Thank you, that was very helpful.

I'll have to keep in mind to keep myself short on stories which I
liked, but didn't like all too much. I usually write the longest
reviews for stories which I liked, but had weaknesses.

Sounds like an easy enough work - copy into MS Word, use Character
Count(without blanks), transfer according to a chart. I'll be happy to
help.

I go ahead and write comments for stories I found troublesome. I just won't
include them in my votes. I may or may not pass them along to the authors at
some time after the awards are done.

Thanks! I've posted you on the staff page on the web site!

I know. It's hilarious. I just had to have it as a sig and H.F. gave her
permission.
