Remember that any characters you write are counted. Good or bad. We
don't assess negative points. So if you use negative or
just "constructive" criticm, you may be helping a story that you
think inferior to win an award.
Now, admittedly, I'll sneak in a constructive phrase here and there,
keeping it very short. You are free to write any comment you want.
But know that you are giving points to any story you write about by
the amount that you write, not the positive/negative qualities of
what you write. It's your choice, just know the consequences.
Elanor, sorry to use you an example, hon, but this is what brought
this up. Some of your votes contained "quibbles". These were long,
juicy comments, so the authors probably loved them. I know I would.
But you may not be aware that most of those votes ended up being 10
points (the maximum). Some of the stories you had quibbles with have
moved up into the top three point-getters in their
categories/subcategories. So your votes *might* help them win an
award. (I say "might" because voting is still open and there is also
Amnesty Day to come. New votes will change the totals, of course.)
So, in summary, be aware that if you write negative or constructive
crit, it counts in the points total for that story/author.
The number of characters you write is all we count. That's why it's
counter-productive to write negative criticism (or even
constructive).
The best rule of thumb is "If you can't say something nice, don't say
anything at all."
If you like a story but it has some imperfections, make your comment
shorter than the story you thought was better than that one. If you
absolutely must stick in a constructive comment, keep it very short
and the majority of your vote positive.
You can always send the author those constructive comments after the
Awards are over.

I was and I am very aware that my quibbles add points.
I took all your comments concerning negative comments deep into my heart.
I do not quibble at stories/poems I do not like ;-)
So please all you authors quibbled at by me
take my quibbles as if I had done as others
sending their loving and solely positive remarks !
Unfortunately I am a critical mind :-)
I think I can give various authors 10 points and later all the votes sent in
by various voters will be added up to find the highest scoring.
So please all you other voters do not follow my example
but heed Ainaechoiriel's advice if you choose to quibble at stories
you like less than others.
Best wishes from Elanor
who resumes writing reviews meant positive and admiring
although she includes quibbles
