In other news.... Posted by Ainaechoiriel September 26, 2004 - 0:11:22 Topic ID# 2166
Well, I got the hard drive back.

That's the good news. I still can't get the Windows 2000 server to work.
That's the bad news. While it's terribly annoying to me personally, it
wouldn't matter much to all of you except that that, because the MEFA files
live on that giant hard drive....

I can't reach them. This computer is not the server and if the server isn't
running the network, there is no netwok. If there's no network, I can't
post all the ballots. Unless I copy them from the Outbox. Might do that
tomorrow. I've just too much else going on right now tonight. I hope you
understand.

Right now, I've dug up my $$$$$ data recovery software I bought 3 years ago
when my hard drive got "confused". Yes, that's the technical term for it.
Four different programs reported 4 different partition configurations. If
that's not confused, I don't know what is. Well that hard drive had my
writing, too, and you know I couldn't just let that go without getting it
back.

So, if you ever need data recovery on a non-physically damaged hard drive
(not clanking or smoking, etc.), let me know. I'll give you a reasonable
rate.

Anyway, the server won't come up because Directory Services won't run. I
have a lead on a possible fix, but it requires me to try and retrieve a file
from a partition I deleted. Cross your fingers for me. That software has
recovered files from a hard drive that I repartitioned and formatted. It
does work. But the file may be corrupted. If it was corrupted, the data
recovery software can retrieve it, but it will still be corrupted.

And, because it is a giant 200GB hard drive....It's going to take about 29
hours to scan the thing.

Yep. 29. It said 24 when I started, darn it.

And if that still doesn't work, I've still got the hard drive with Windows
NT 4 installed. I'll go back to that and chuck the whole Win2k thing.

Fun, fun, fun. Glad I got that last vote out when I did.

And I just noticed my oldest cat lying on the floor here. He's very wide.
Very. How do you put a cat with a food allergy on a diet?

Computer problems are such a pain - you rely on your PC, and then
suddenly nothing goes.

I'm so impressed with all the work you put into having these Awards
run as smoothly as possible. I'm keeping my thumbs pressed for you
that after this, it'll be mostly waiting for the 29 hours to pass.

> Very. How do you put a cat with a food allergy on a diet?

Water and no bread?

And I'll be sending in my Elves Votes at Last Chance Day (I forgot the
name).

Good luck!

Yep. I particularly rely on three of them. The laptop is just for when I
don't want to sit in the office (home) here. ;-)

Hey, we're down to 16 hours 30 minutes! ;-)

> Very. How do you put a cat with a food allergy on a diet?

I'd get put in jail for animal cruelty. It's funny because now that I have
Belle (ie. A kitten eating kitten food) the adult cats' food isn't available
for more than 20 minutes, three times a day. And I know they aren't eating
it all. I put it away. I give them 1/2 cup (split into three bowls) three
times a day. 1/2 cup is the recommended amount for an adult cat over a
certain weight (which the cat in question is definitely over). So I know
he's not eating 1/2 cup, or at least not much more. So why all the weight?
I know he doesn't play much but really?

In contrast, my 2nd oldest cat looks lke he's bigger but is really terribly
skinny. Under that long fur is a three-inch-wide cat. ;-) I can't get him
to eat anymore.

And then there's Lina, who hardly eats at all, but looks a little wide and
sometimes I can't tell if it's the semi-long hair or that she's overweight.
And she does play!

>And I'll be sending in my Elves Votes at Last Chance Day (I forgot the
name).

Amnesty Day! A beautiful thing, eh? I'm glad my selfishness (I have more
stories I want to read and didn't get them read in time--and there was that
extra day just sitting there....) can be to everyone's advantage!

Now, gotta get ready for church.

Fleas live outside. Jogging takes place outside. Cat goes outside. Cat
gets fleas. Cat scratches until he bleeds and is generally miserable.

*coming out of lurkdome since the subject of cats has arisen.*

I had a cat that almost died due to fleas; not from an allergic
reaction, but because he was injured and they sucked him dry.
I'm pro holistic when it comes to cat care. However, with fleas
in a multi-cat household like mine, I say "nuke 'em" and use
Frontline (NCI). If you are interested, I have a few
herbal/holistic tips stored somewhere in my PC.

I used to take my cat Garfield on a leash. Fat, orange tabby,
with a cattitude, if you get the meaning. He's not named
Garfield without good reason.

He embarrassed me too many times...

Last post on this since it is rather off-topic (though I do love to talk
about cats!)

My 1-year-old, Zmrzlina, nearly died at 7 weeks because the had nearly
sucked her dry. She had 4% red blood cells. She's a miracle baby. The vet
really was surprised she survived and I think that a lot of that has to do
with all the people who prayed for her. She got a middle name after that:
Raphaelle "healed by God".

;-) I think you'd have had to start pretty early with the leash training.
This particular cat of mine is 9 years old.
