Humor
Official Voting Ballot

Larian Elensar larian_elensar@yahoo.com

Alternate Universe
HuA2: No Living Man by Elana

Oh. Poor Witch King! He really should have gotten some additions to that
prophecy!

Alternate Universe
HuA3: Slightly Muddled by Lindelea

Oh! Who would have thought? I sure hope Sam was hunky-dory in the morning!

Alternate Universe
HuA7: T'was the Night Before Helm's Deep by Erin's Daughter

Hee! Yeah, I giggled most of the way throught it. Especially like the
references to Maedhros and G.Galad, author!

Parody
HuP4: If Your Nightly News Covered the Silmarillion by erunyauve

Very creative. I liked Celeborn's report best I think!

Parody
HuP5: Mairisuweniel Does Minas Tirith by Viv

Ooh, brave Gimli, sacrificing himself for the good of the fellowship! (I loved
her full name, by the way!)

Parody
HuP8: The Return of the King by Cirdan

Oh dear. Sarcastic Gildor. I was waiting for Gil-Galad (or someone) to trip and
fall. Really. *grin*

Romance
HuR1: Home for the Holidays by Elladan son of Elrond by Claudi007

I laughed all the way through this again, and definitely related to so much of
it, having lived in my share of weird places, and known quirky people. What
really appealed to me though, was how you took the whole fellowship and ring
quest and put it in modern terms. It all made sense, like the password through
Moria, emailing Rumil to have Haldir give them a bad time, and those things.
It's hard to translate Tolkien into modern times without going overboard and I
don't think you did. I know it's difficult because I've seen others try it and
they completely lose the whole flavor of Tolkien's characters, they're so busy
having them blow stuff up or act totally un-elf like. I've always thought
Elrond had to be a bit of geek once he gave up soldiering, and that's exactly
how you had him act as well.

Romance
HuR2: How I Spent My Summer Vacation by Claudi007

First off, I find this whole fic to be patently absurd! *grin* Seriously, I
can identify with so much of what is going on in Elladan's life, I just laugh
out loud. Yes, my cat stares at me when I do that. Gildor's 130 email
forwards are too funny, I have an uncle who does that. I just don't have the
heart to tell him that I just delete them for the sake of expediency. And the
running away! Perfect, especially as no one appreciates Elladan! That is SO
college student. Oh, and the part about Elrohir being too lazy to do anything
to facilitate his laziness! Yeah, that had me laughing, and thinking about
someone I know in real life! I totally love the part where Elladan is listing
the times, after they get the car in Rohan. ...open the diet dr. pepper, there
is diet dr. pepper all over the dash.... Oh yes, that's why I always had the
center console of my beat up car filled with napkins swiped from fast food
places. Someone always spilled something!

Romance
HuR4: Mother of the Year by Alexcat

Poor Glorfindel!! Craving radishes? Yikes! And Erestor, the silly thing! Well
at leaste he learned his lessson.

Romance
HuR6: Sunshine and Ivy by Alexcat

You know, I'd almost feel sorry for Celeborn if the thought of them sunburned
and itching wasn't so darn funny. Don't blame Orophin or Rumil for laughing.
And poor Galadriel! No wonder she sailed!!

Romance
HuR7: The Conversation by sheraiah

Oh yes! I can see this for sure. *snicker*

Hu4: Frogs by Lindelea

*hee* Wow, that was not even close to what I thought it would be. Some great
limericks in there, how creative! Well done.

Hu13: The Eight Companions: A Battle for an Elf's Sanity by Ellipsis

Oh dear! But what a great way to keep the poor elves from being transported
back to stories. Loved the whole ball scene, even though it's obvious that
Feanor lost his mind, thinking that disco ball was pretty! I think you should
write the Feanorians going on their mission...

Hu14: The Ents of Wrath by Bryn (aka bryn_bnw)

Oh...Yes, I definitely saw those poor little flowers smacking themselves
against the tower!

Hu15: The Jewel in the Crown by Alawa

Oh no! Funny in a...morbid sort of way. THough I do hope he doesn't get
caught!

Hu16: The Lady's Gift by Pervinca

Aww. Yeah, Pippin is more precious I guess!

Hu17: The One Ring Reforged by Cirdan

Oh! *hee* Feanor thought it was tacky?! *snicker* He would though, wouldn't
he? Funny.

Hu18: The Romance that Never Was by bryn_bnw

And another Mary..uh, bryn-sue bites the dust!

AUTHORS (remember to comment on the writer as regards to the category, not the
story, here):

HuA2: Alexcat
Alexcat gives the elves a little of a vaudeville feeling. She brings them down
to earth a bit and makes them more solid and real, and still funny, and still
elves.

HuA10: Claudi007
I love claudi007's totally understated humor, and his ability to tap into real
life situations that we all experience at some time or another. We can all
relate to at least a couple of the things that Elladan goes through in his
Summer Vacation and Home for the Holidays series.

Alternate Universe

HuA1: Legolas and the Stanley Cup by Bubbles

This is one of those stories that seems like it shouldn't work.
Hockey? Lord of the Rings? Huh? And yet, and yet... Bubbles makes this
work. Written in article form, the sports journalism style, wit, and
playful irreverence combine for a good laugh. The author clearly loves
Lord of the Rings, and she loves hockey, and blends her interests
nicely. This is not slapstick, although, there is some high-sticking,
I suspect, behind the reports of elvish brawling. The series that
accompanies this gives me hope when hockey in real life lets me down.
Give it a try—if you're among the select LOTR fans with a hockey
interest, or vice versa, you should enjoy it and the rest of the
series. Go 'Bou!

Alternate Universe

HuA3: Slightly Muddled by Lindelea

Well, that was amusing. Cute commentary, if perhaps a bit much, on
some of the more egregious modernisms one might find in LOTR fanfiction.

Alternate Universe

HuA4: The Fanfic Lounge: The Lord of the Rings by CNell

This is probably as close to a comedy classic as we have in the
fandom, other than the original OFUM. This is a great example of a
metafic humor, and it mercilessly skewers the fanfictional trends—much
as a I love slash, yes, it needs to be skewered every once in awhile,
especially when it's so deftly done. But the major fanfic trend, the
incessant repetition of Mary Sue, gets thoroughly mocked in a creative
manner which identifies no one story and yet typifies them all. If
ever the characters of LOTR were to come to life and see what had been
done to them in fiction, you can imagine they might react rather like
this. The use of Elijah Woods and Orlando Bloom as modern day foils
was inspired and well done. The author's own creation, the Secretary,
servers her purpose admirably as the eternally perky maternal school
marm-turned-executive assistant. There are a couple of good gags, but
the humor is primarily centered on the habits of the fandom at large,
just after "Fellowship of the Ring" came out in theater—it's
intelligent self-mockery (insofar as we are all members of the
fandom), and something we can all benefit from reading. And of course,
laughing until your stomach hurts is probably also good for the
abdominal muscles, right? Hilarious.

Alternate Universe

HuA5: The Fanfic Lounge: The Two Towers by CNell

The fanfic lounge returns! Although not quite as good as the original,
this fic features some great scenes: the Mary Sue coup count between
Gimli and Legolas, the inexplicable popularity of Haldir,
gender-bending gone beyond wrong, overdone plotlines (how many times
shall we return to Helm's Deep?), more bad slash, and some deserved
skewering of fannish tendencies to wound characters for drama. The
characters act as you might expect them to act throughout, if ever
they became accustomed to the metafic realm, and there are even a few
entertaining cross-over moments that keep things lively.

Alternate Universe

HuA6: The Story of Legolas and Enoreth by CNell

Now this is entertaining: we've seen the fanfic lounge as such, but
now we're taken inside a Story with Legolas, who is forced to endure
the adventures (and unwanted attentions) of Mary Sue. If one has ever
wondered what a character, did characters have independent existence
and a sense of identity, might think of the stories they appear in,
this would be the fic to read. My personal favorite scene is the
aftermath of Mary Sue's introduction to the Fellowship—great ensemble
writing, even if it is brief. Intelligent humor that makes you think
about your own stories in a new light.

Alternate Universe

HuA7: T'was the Night Before Helm's Deep by Erin's Daughter

I had a lot of fun reading this one. It's a bit like Dilbert does
Middle-earth, in that Barad-dûr is now a bloated bureaucracy, with all
the cast of characters that implies... if said characters were orcs,
torturers, and Nazgûl. Good for a laugh.

Parody

HuP1: A Maiden from a Distant World by CNell

Another witty skewering of a fandom favorite plot device: the modern
girl falls into Middle-earth... and the laws of gravity have their
usual effect.

Parody

HuP2: Boromir: The Owner's Guide and Maintenance Manual by Theresa Green

I only wish the technical manual to my VCR were so entertaining. On
the other hand, I could also wish my VCR in any way resembled Boromir.
Very cleverly done, with more than a wink and nod to the overwhelming
force of attraction that this fictional character exerts on otherwise
sane human females (and a few males). The little cautionary notes
throughout and the "trouble-shooting" section are priceless.

Parody

HuP4: If Your Nightly News Covered the Silmarillion by erunyauve

Cute!

Parody

HuP6: Nine Men And A Little Lady by Kielle

Another favorite comic gem. Rather than catty diaries, we have the
desperate thoughts of those caught under the spell of Mary Sue.
Boromir's complaints, and Gimli's, are priceless. Galadriel's entry in
particular made me laugh, and the ending is quite fitting for
everyone's least favorite characters: Gollum and Mary Sue deserve each
other, after all. Every major character in "Fellowship of the Ring",
including Bill the Pony, get a snarky but to the point word in
edgewise via these journals, something which they surely didn't manage
throughout their journey with the ultimate fanfic evil!

Hu2: Experiment Gone... Right? by Viv

Cute, although Gollum and Gloria Gaynor should never exist together in
the same dimension! Loved this line: "And he knew a thing or two about
compulsion."

Hu8: Of Dwarvish Ale and Battle Scars by Aratlithiel

Drunken humor is not usually my cup of tea, but I did get some
chuckles from this one. The "very special poetry" was particularly...
stimulating. Rangers have a lot of time on their hands, indeed. It was
nice to see Frodo in a good mood, and fed up with being carefully
watched by well-meaning friends.

Hu13: The Eight Companions: A Battle for an Elf's Sanity by Ellipsis

Another great metafic comedy. For some reason, I really love these.
This time, fanfiction haunts Legolas even unto Valinor, and the sons
of Maedhros only wish they had to deal with all that wretched
self-reflection and family politics in the Halls of Mandos. Features
the disco-ball of doom, personally wrought by Fëanor and abhorred by
all with a modicum of taste (even if they haven't been subjected to
dancing with Mary Sue in modern disco clubs), fast-talking Elves, and
Fëanorians behaving badly, this should make everyone laugh.

Hu15: The Jewel in the Crown by Alawa

Black humor, in its way, and yet somehow fitting. The protagonist is
not a villain in the traditional sense, just thoroughly aware of his
own self-interest. This is one of those quirky tales that probably
would get passed down in the family for generations, and you can just
imagine every king of Gondor, starting with Aragorn, letting his son
in on the secret of the crown as a sort of coming of age confession.
Well done!

Hu16: The Lady's Gift by Pervinca

My computer screen nearly got sprayed with a mouthful of tomato and
barley soup when Gimli tried to think like Pippin, at Legolas'
instigation, and subsequently concluded: "And my father always taught
me that elves were stupid." This was just delightful—I loved the
unexpected end. I loved Gimli getting jibed at every turn about how
hobbits are great burglars, as Dwarves, and especially Gimli ought to
have cause to know.

Hu18: The Romance that Never Was by bryn_bnw

Oh dear! Those dratted creatures that fall from the sky cause no end
of trouble, do they? Who would think the Fellowship would just happen
to run into four of them in a week?

Hu19: The Tale of A King by Arwen Imladviel

This story is a great example of inversion of expectations. This
particular king isn't one who went down in pseudo-history with a good
reputation, and he's not the king you'd expect. I certainly didn't.
And I will never be able to look at Beren and Lúthien's adventure the
same way after this. Read this one when the angst of the Silmarillion
starts to get to you: this should enable you to get through at least
half of the Narn i hin Húrin.

Alright, people, there's good news and bad news. Good news: This ballot is
not nearly as long as some of them have been. Bad news: It's still not a
short ballot. Sorry to all who are forced to count it! Stories are first and
authors follow at the bottom.

------------------------------

STORIES

------------------------------

>>Alternate Universe
>>HuA1: Legolas and the Stanley Cup by Bubbles

Thereıs something wonderfully irreverent about this story. Perhaps itıs the
fact that the tone is so dry and deadpan. Itıs all so serious, and the idea
that Legolas wants to make his hair feel safe cracked me up, though not
nearly as much as the line about Elrond taking out Keanu.

>>Alternate Universe
>>HuA2: No Living Man by Elana

I absolutely loved this story. When Tolkien first mentions Glorfindelıs
prophecy about ıno living man,ı this was actually something I thought about.
I mean, there are quite a few non-living non-men type things wandering
around the LotR universe, and itıs really only a matter of time before some
of them meet up with the Witch-king. Bringing all these characters in one at
a time was a great touch, and the last line about the eagles had me rolling
on the floor. Great wordplay.

>>Alternate Universe
>>HuA3: Slightly Muddled by Lindelea

As one of those silly Americans who fights a losing battle against slang,
Iım very fond of this fic. Lindelea shows an amazing ability to hunt down
all those little less-than-Tolkien sayings that sneak into the stories. And
having caught quite a few (and missed even more) in my own stories, I found
it absolutely hilarious.

>>Alternate Universe
>>HuA4: The Fanfic Lounge: The Lord of the Rings by CNell

This idea is sheer brilliance, and the combination of the startled
Fellowship plus a shirtless Orlando Bloom and a bewildered Elijah Wood is
fantastic. The opening scene alone nearly had me in tears of laughter as the
Fellowship wakes up hopping mad and the two actors do their very best not to
become pincushions. Later musings on dreams and psychological constructs
only made it worse, and by the end of the first act, with everyone STILL
confused, I was ready to die. The rest of the fic settles down a bit, but
not too much. The Fellowship is introduced to caffeine, after all, as well
as the concept of slash. A good point is raised, actually. Aragorn left
Arwen to wander around with not one but EIGHT other guys. Makes one think.

>>Alternate Universe
>>HuA5: The Fanfic Lounge: The Two Towers by CNell

This sequel to the first LotR Fanfic Lounge is even better than its
predecessor, and the Secretary has become one of my favorite OCs. I award
her the gold medal for tittering. Sheıs quite good at it. But itıs clear
that sheıs also good at a number of other things, such as keeping order in
what occasionally feels like a zoo. I love the way characters pop in and
out, complaining about various fics, and how Legolas once wandered in as a
woman, which gave me hysterics when Aragorn bumped into him. The Mary Sue
killing contest between Legolas and Gimli was great, and Eowyn teaching Xena
how to fight in Middle-earth (getting rid of all those flips that made the
show fun but less than believable) was to die for. The outtakes deserve a
mention all their own, particularly, the idea of bringing Buffy and Spike
into Middle-earth and Legolas dusting Spike before he gets a chance to find
his story. Hilarious romp on all counts!

>>Alternate Universe
>>HuA6: The Story of Legolas and Enoreth by CNell

Poor Legolas. Poor, poor Legolas. Oh, the things we writers subject our
characters to! The Fanfic Lounge stories were excellent. This story, in my
opinion, blows them out of the water. The trip with Legolas through a Mary
Sue story is something I will never forget. I must admit that Legolas was
far more accommodating than I would have ever been. But though he was more
or less genial on the outside, his inner protests and bruised pride kept
cracking me up. And he tried to hard to escape! The myriad of tittering and
occasionally distracted guides were a great addition to this piece, but the
crowning moment was really when Legolas used the authorıs vagueness against
her and broke the necklace he was supposed to use in his escape. I more or
less saw it coming, but I still cheered when it happened. And when Legolas
used his charm as a weapon, I cheered again. Well, cheered and winced,
especially with the kiss, but the whole romance scene is somehow bearable
because Legolas is just using it as a means to an end. Thankfully they
pulled him from the fic before things could get too intense, though. And
thankfully he survived to go back to Rohan and hunt Orcs. Spectacular tale
that had me laughing the entire way through.

>>Alternate Universe
>>HuA7: T'was the Night Before Helm's Deep by Erin's Daughter

The idea of morale among the Orcs was not one that would have occurred to
me, but it makes sense here. Distorted and warped sense, but sense
nonetheless. The line that really got to me was the idea that the word
ıminionı was detrimental and had been dropped. And the idea that the
Witch-king has been taking eloquence lessons is a great one, too. Very
irreverent and very hilarious look at the Orcs in the Interrogation
Division.

>>Parody
>>HuP1: A Maiden from a Distant World by CNell

CNell does it again. Or, I suppose I should say does it first, because this
was one of CNell's first LotR fics if I remember correctly. In any case, the
irony surrounding the summary is probably the funniest thing about this
story. Weıre more or less kept in the dark as to whatıs going on until the
very end, though I had my suspicions. And I was right, but that didnıt make
it less hilarious. A great take on the ıgirl falls into Middle-earthı idea
and a wonderful use of wordplay.

>>Parody
>>HuP2: Boromir: The Owner's Guide and Maintenance Manual by Theresa Green

I love all the fics in the Ownerıs Guide series, but this is one of my
favorites. I honestly donıt even know where to begin. I love the way book
references are worked into something so simple as an ownerıs manual. Like
the idea that Boromir would be good on a white water rafting trip because he
can in boats while going over falls. Things like that just make this
fic/manual/guide click. And the offhand remarks such as distracting a kelpto
Aragorn model with a partial unwrapped Arwen unit makes it impossible NOT to
fall over laughing. And Boromir can use my strawberry scented bubble bath
any time he wants, elf or not!

>>Parody
>>HuP4: If Your Nightly News Covered the Silmarillion by erunyauve

I would be highly interested in watching ıSeven Half-Elven Brides for Seven
Mirkwood Brothers,ı though if Mary Sue gets title credits, I may reconsider.
Loved the idea that Morgoth stole some of Turgonıs players to create the
Angband franchise. Very wry sense of humor going on here.

>>Parody
>>HuP5: Mairisuweniel Does Minas Tirith by Viv

Itıs a good thing Mary Sues donıt fall for Gimli. Otherwise, the other
members of the Fellowship would have no protection. I very much enjoyed this
fic as it combined a ravishingly beautiful and capable Mary Sue with some
very practical-minded males. I love the fact that Aragorn is entirely fed up
with whatıs-her-name and that Eowyn rode into battle to protect Eomer from
her. Leave it to Gimli to put her in her place. Great closing lines from the
dwarf. My favorite part, though, is the idea that Lıthien could drink Manwı
under the table and make chocolate-lembas fondue. Iıd pay money to see that.

>>Parody
>>HuP6: Nine Men And A Little Lady by Kielle

One of the first Tolkien humor fics I ever read, and still one of my
favorites. I love the diary form this fic takes and how the Fellowship isnıt
quite sure how to describe the ever-changing Mary Sue, whether itıs her hair
or her eyes or even something so basic as her name. The idea that Gandalf
fell on his own sword to get out of there had me in stitches, but my
absolute favorite part of the fic was when Galadriel drones on about how a
great evil has just left Lothlırien and that her people are safe now and
then adds, almost as a footnote, that the One Ring is also leaving. It was a
great touch with a wonderful buildup to support it, and it almost cost me a
computer screen because I think I remember drinking something at the time.
The slow downward spiral of the Fellowship as they try to ward whoever she
is off is a hilarious ride. I love that Gimli is the only one who seems able
to keep his head, though the hobbits and Bill all do a remarkable job. Props
go out to Gollum for getting rid of her once and for all. For his sake, I
hope he gets over his indigestion soon.

>>Hu4: Frogs by Lindelea

The obvious humor within the limericks was fun, but my favorite part of this
fic is the humor found in the side commentary. For example, the argument
over the word ısnork,ı during which Sam pointed out that Strider (who hasnıt
even been referred to yet in the fic) just barely snorked while choking on
his ale as they were finishing the rhyme. Or the idea that Beregond can
quell Pippin because Pippin is now obligated to look after him and that heıs
doing the same thing to Faramir, something Faramir is only now figuring out.
Itıs the little side conversations that really made this fic for me.

>>Hu10: Out of the Frying Pan and Into the Fire by bryn_bnw

This story is by far my favorite LotR humor piece. Bar none. It has
everything. It has parody, it has irony, it has tongue-in-cheek, itıs wry,
itıs dry, itıs deadpan, itıs inane, itıs ridiculous, itıs witty, itıs sharp,
itıs cynical, itıs sarcastic, and itıs perfectly balanced by the occasional
dark cloud so that when the humor comes back around, we appreciate it all
the more. It start innocuously enough with a simple scream on the part of
Glıin and then goes swiftly downhill from there until various members of the
Fellowship are all over Arda trying to deal with one another and with their
companions. I think those truly deserving of pity in this story are
Glorfindel (who must deal with Legolas and Gimli as well as Thranduil by the
end) and Malbeorn (who must put up with the antics of Aragorn, Boromir,
Halbarad, and Rowgond.) That said, consolation prizes should definitely be
awarded to Shadowfax and Erestor, though the horse did have it coming to
him. But this brings up another gem of this story: its seemingly minor
characters. Halbarad, Erestor, and Glorfindel, for example, are full-fledged
and believable characters by the end of the story, and theyıre hilarious
ones at that. The OCs do just as well, and I would not mind reading a fic
consisting solely of Rowgond and Malbeorn. And looking at more prominent
characters through the eyes of minor characters and OCs sheds a whole new
light on Tolkienıs world. Bryn has pushed as far as she can with this story,
and in some ways itıs very much like ıThe Hobbit.ı Willing to exaggerate a
bit to get the point across. This story is essentially the incarnation of
Murphyıs Law, and it is one of my favorites.

>>Hu11: Secrets We Dare Not Tell by Coriel

Off the wall and bizarre. I loved it. Kudos to Legolas for some very quick
thinking. Itıs a good thing that Thranduilıs hair is close enough to match
Galadrielıs. Otherwise, Mirkwood might have found itself short one prince.

>>Hu13: The Eight Companions: A Battle for an Elf's Sanity by Ellipsis

The denizens of Mandos have completely lost it, and the disco ball is proof.
That said, this is a wonderfully ingenious tale, and I love how Legolas of
Gondolin was tied into Legolas of Mirkwood, complete with a seemingly random
reference to night vision. Iım not the biggest fan of Fıanor and his brood,
so it was great to see them outmaneuvered, and the various lengths everyone
was willing to go to on Legolasıs behalf made me laugh. Theyıre all so
genuinely concerned! Of course, given what heıs been through, theyıve got
good reason to be.

>>Hu14: The Ents of Wrath by Bryn (aka bryn_bnw)

Superb story that sharply twists canon and then sits back to watch as the
consequences roll in. Yes, talking trees are indeed absurd. Iım not sure
that weıve found an improvement, though. The poor Ents. Daisies just arenıt
as fearsome as oak trees.

>>Hu15: The Jewel in the Crown by Alawa

Oh dear. Macabre humor is always somewhat risky because thereıs a chance the
audience will be too uneasy to enjoy it, but this was handled very well. By
the time I realized what was going on, I was laughing too hard to get
squeamish. Itıs an icky thought, but also a very funny one. Great story.

>>Hu18: The Romance that Never Was by bryn_bnw

Iım not entirely sure why, but this story reminds me of snipe hunting. For
those not familiar with that wonderful tradition, Iıll try not to spoil it,
but I will say that it provides hours of entertainment. Giant, rolling
buildups precede the actual hunt, the hunt itself is gripping and tense, and
then the end just seems toıdrop. But the very nature of the contrast between
beginning and end is half the fun, and afterwards, everyone can look back
and shake their heads in disbelief that such a thing ever took place. This
story reminds me very much of that. I mean that as a compliment, too, just
in case people arenıt sure. I like to take groups out snipe hunting.

-----------------------------

AUTHORS

-----------------------------

>>HuA7: Bryn (aka bryn_bnw)

When stepping into one of Brynıs stories, you should be prepared to have
reality warp around you. And by reality, I mean your own as well as the
storyıs. Bryn has an ability to burrow into the cracks of a canon and then
start stretching. Every possible stretch is taken. Every possible flaw a
character might have is exploited. Nothing and no one is too sacred for fun,
and when Bryn gets her claws into something, she doesnıt let go. So what
does this mean for humorous stories? It means theyıre zanny, hilarious, and
on the top of my list for recommended parodies in the LotR world. My
favorite is easily ıOut of the Frying Pan, Into the Fire.ı Brynıs ability to
put every single character into the wildest juxtapositions possible astounds
me. You can see this ability for character expression and character foiling
in her other stories, but I really do think that ıFrying Panı does it best.
Bryn also has a marvelous gift for narrative, and her phrasing keeps the
reader interested, laughing, and completely unable to set the fic aside.
Finally, in the longer work of ıFrying Pan,ı Bryn demonstrates the
understanding that humor has to be balanced by a few darker moments,
otherwise humor just canıt be taken seriously. Which is an interesting
concept, and one that Bryn seems to know very well. Creative, imaginative
author who knows her characters, knows how to get the most out of them, and
isnıt afraid to stretch the outer boundaries of canon.

>>HuA11: CNell

One of the pitfalls in writing humor, and AU/parody humor in particular, is
that removing the characters from their normal situations sometimes destroys
characterization and the reader ends up with a story that has nothing to do
with the original version aside from the name. CNell shows us how to avoid
that and how to incorporate all the hilarity possible. The short but very
funny tale about a girl who falls (quite literally) into Middle-earth had me
smiling for hours, and the Fanfic Lounge stories are really something that
no Tolkien fanfiction reader should miss. My favorite by far is the story of
Legolas trying to worm his way through and out of a fic with as little
damage to his pride and honor as possible. The number of strange Mary
Sueisms (if thatıs a word) that CNell manages to draw from and incorporate
is staggering, and the fact that Legolas is more or less able to outwit the
author in the end (and rouse the ire of the Forces) was a brilliant touch.
CNell keeps the characters in-character (unless thereıs a compelling reason
otherwise, such as the fact that they just escaped a wildly out-of-character
fic) and because of this, CNell is able to draw heavily on the devices of
humor and desperation while portraying a very Middle-earth character in a
setting that has almost nothing to do with Tolkien. Brilliant writing, a
fine eye for detail and humorous situations, and one of the most original
minds in the business. CNell, I bow to your creativity.

>>HuA14: Elana

Elana demonstrates some terrific wordplay and a great senses of timing in
pulling together all those non-men, non-living creatures who happened to be
in the vicinity. Or merely in the same world.

>>HuA22: Kielle

I will forever respect Kielle for ıNine Men and a Little Ladyı as it was one
of the first LotR parodies I read and it remains one of my favorites. The
timing of this piece is exceptional, and I love watching different
characters react to whatever-her-name-is in different ways, from Elrond to
the Fellowship to Bill to Galadriel and finally Gollum. Kielle takes the
best (or worst, I suppose) aspects of a Mary Sue and parodies them for all
theyıre worth. Gimliıs grumbling about the possibility that Mary Sue has
gotten herself dramatically injured yet again left me gasping for breath.
Wonderful sense of comedic timing and wording, and an exceptional Mary Sue
parody.

>>HuA29: Theresa Green

The wildly original Ownerıs Guide series is easily one of my favorites. A
very sly use of both book and movie verse goes into these manuals, and
references pop out at you when you least expect it. Which adds to the humor,
along with the wacky way in which these references are used, such as giving
Boromir a New Yearıs blower so he doesnıt wake the neighbors up with the
Horn of Gondor. Very good use of dry, deadpan humor, and kudos for one of
the more original comedic ideas.

--------------------------------------------------

Well, that's all from me. I'm off to play with the adventure ballot...

'This piece of crap, why would I want it?' Feanor then demonstrates the
flaws in The Ring, and goes on about cheap spells and shoddy workmanship.

I love how he reforges The Ring and destroys Sauron by doing so, but the
best bit is the silmaril he gives Frodo, forged from the music of the world.
Fitting, considering his second son is a great singer and musician.

I laugh every time I read this, my favourite of your stories Cirdan!

This one frankly made me laugh my butt off. Itıs just so cute and clever. I really enjoyed the part about bathing the Boromir.

Elladanıs family makes us all happy that its HIS family and not ours. This is definitely not a story to be read in a library because unless you have no sense of humor at all, youıll be giggling helplessly. And do put your coffee down too.

Poor Elladan! Such a life! Grandpa is my favorite in this one and that thing with Erestor. Always glad that theyıre not my family. Legolas and Elrohir are a hoot!

Humor
Official Voting Ballot

Alternate Universe
HuA6: The Story of Legolas and Enoreth by CNell
Enoreth is deliciously vile, as all good Sueparodies should be. Skin
the color of new milk. Singing her prohpecy/history thingy. Cerulean
eyes. Eeew. Just, eeeew. I'd spork her through and through if I
weren't laughing so hard.

Alternate Universe
HuA7: T'was the Night Before Helm's Deep by Erin's Daughter
What inspired use of parenthetical asides! And I loved the need to
acronmymize just everything (e.g., DFNIHAPT). And "Silmarilgate"...
hee! Translation of bloodthirsty orc culture into modern business
parlance works frighteningly well. I'm currently imagining
orcs "thinking outside the box". It ain't a pretty thought. And no,
I probably won't be attempting to call my boss "Grumpy-Britches" on
Monday. But I'll be thinking it.

Parody
HuP3: Debbie Does the Fellowship by Gypsie Rose
The absolute wrongest thing about this fic is that I just put in a
DVD of Fellowship, and every time I see a fellowship member pop up
on the screen, my initial thought is "Glad I could help. Wanna have
sex?" Happily,Debbie was an equal-opportunity, um, "provider"
(contest reviews are strictly PG, so shan't use more descriptive
terms for Debbie's, er, behavior). At any rate, yay for Debbie.
After all, Gimli deserves nookie too.

Romance
HuR1: Home for the Holidays by Elladan son of Elrond by Claudi007
You had me at "Elrohir has a bladder the size of a walnut." And it
was all downhill after that. Lessons to Elrond on proper usage of
prepositions. Ingredients on the peanut package ("may contain
peanuts or other nuts" indeed). Glorfindel's little oopsie with the
high-school girl and his adventures with car rentals and
accounting. "Eltendo's" iguana with a secret name and a tendency to
horf up banana bits. Big-eyed cactus aliens (in fact, I was laughing
so hard at the first Legolas e-mail that I, well, I snorted). And
Granny Galadriel's sex-toy fetish and that Nog Log are just...
wrong. Finally, even though this is fiction and humour fiction at
that, I have to say that Elladan has my full support in his efforts
to keep holidays from being celebrated far too soon. He seems a
thoughtful, earnest young elf (when he's sober; He might also be a
touch sarcastic, too). And he certainly deserves the best gifts from
the grandparents. (Sincerely, I couldn't stop reading this thing. I
tried to stop at chapter 3 and go to sleep because it was very late.
But I figured, just a couple more entries. Who would know? It's now
stupid early in the morning, and I just finished reading. Your story
is crack.)

Romance
HuR3: I'm WHAT? by Ellbee
Okay, I'll just say for the record that I'm not a big fan of Mpregs.
But this is such a hilarious send-up of the subgenre, it amuses even
a skeptic like me. *Digging its way out*?! Well, that certainly puts
a different spin on that crucial "Yes, but how does that *happen*?!"
question. Ick. Squick. And double eeew. And this line, well, it's
classic: "Burst into tears at the sight of baby bunny. Then shot it
for breakfast." That's my warrior mommy! You could give Helen
Fielding a run for her money; this style really fits your natural
sense of humour and I'd love to see you write more diary-style bits.

Romance
HuR5: My Hairy Prisoner by BittenBuggy
Okay, Lady BB, that cucaracha thing was low. That's a personal
nightmare of mine, and just the thought of creepy crawlies in Lego's
beautiful flaxen locks makes me shudder. Poor Leggsie, all alone
with no RAID. And why am I not surprised that a story of yours
revolves around suggestive dialogue and the use of restraints? I'm
shocked, I tell you. Just shocked! (Well, not really, but I *am*
very amused.) Oh, and your note at the end of chapter 5 implied an
add-on scene. Where is that thing?

Hu6: Joy on a Summer Morning by Ellbee
Bwahaha. How can I say anything about this story without giving it
away?! In fact, just implying that there might possibly be an
outside chance of this piece having a twist might spoil it for some
people. So, no twist. No surprise. Just lovely summery morningly
slashy goodness. Yeah. (Andareallyhilarioustwistattheend,too.)

Hu8: Of Dwarvish Ale and Battle Scars by Aratlithiel
Love the naughty limericks!

Hu11: Secrets We Dare Not Tell by Coriel
Now that's a tricksy little secret, ain't it? Very politically
portentous, and also kind of nice, considering. It highlights the
idea that we're all very much the same, despite our need to note and
dwell on the differences. Yes, even elves.

Hu12: Stop That, You'll Only Hurt Yourselves by AlexCat and Larian
Elensar
First, this has to be one of the most suggestive and amusing fic
titles in the whole of ficdom. And the blinding nonsense of shouting
in all-caps a phrase like "AND BE QUIET!" is worth a chuckle in
itself. Other than that: wild romp of a story; most enjoyable.

AUTHORS (remember to comment on the writer as regards to the
category, not the story, here):

HuA10: Claudi007
Home for the Holidays by Elladan son of Elrond, How I Spent My
Summer Vacation
Well, what can I say about your writing style that you haven't heard
before? That it feels effortless and deliciously sarcastic and is
impossible to stop reading once one has started? But you've probably
heard that already. How about "You've such a talent for making the
mundane amusing that I would willingly read your grocery lists"?
Really, I could say a lot of nice things about your writing, but I
bet none of it would be new news. But at least my chattering on here
will give you some extra MEFA points. You deserve 'em.

HuA15: Ellbee
I'm WHAT?, Joy on a Summer Morning
I'm in a quandry. See, your humour pieces are, not surprisingly, gut-
bustingly hilarious, even on the second and third and fourth reads.
But I happen to know have inside knowledge that you just naturally
have a way of phrasing things to give them the most possible dry-
humour impact. Even things that *shouldn't* be funny. So, are you a
gifted, talented humour writer or just a naturally hilarious
person?? I think it may be a healthy dose of both. Either way, it's
good for me since I get to read the end result of it all.

Last minute: my Humor votes. I'll probably drop in some more come
Amnesty Day.

The story starts a bit slow for my taste, but from the middle of the
second chapter on, when the Mary Sue parody Enoreth enters, it picks
up, since the main attraction of this story is definitely the
over-the-top MarySueishness of Enoreth and her absurd fate.

> Alternate Universe
>
> HuA7: T'was the Night Before Helm's Deep by Erin's Daughter

The "depicting the forces of evil as a large corporation" didn't catch
on with me that well, probably because I've seen it done before. There
are some good laughs though, like the " Department For New,
Interesting, and Hopefully Agonizingly Painful Tortures". The charm of
this story is for me in the respectless, "good grief what a nuisance
that was" tone in which the overview on characters and events – that
is really delightful and has me chuckling happily.

> Parody
>
> HuP2: Boromir: The Owner's Guide and Maintenance Manual by Theresa
Green

The whole manual with it's matter of fact tone and innuendos is a joy
(I have a dirty mind, what can I say). The Frequently Asked Questions
and Trouble Shooting were probably most fun, and though this isn't my
favorite among the User's Manuels, it's light-hearted and fun to read
and re-read.

> Parody
>
> HuP3: Debbie Does the Fellowship by Gypsie Rose

I enjoyed the contrast between the typical Mary Sueish descriptions
and the bad-mouthed creature the poor fellowship members had to tag
around. Good descriptions of the characters and the modern-world
elements, but a bit too much description of clothing for a parody.

> Parody
>
> HuP5: Mairisuweniel Does Minas Tirith by Viv

This is just the way I like my Mary Sue parodies: over the top, with
the canon characters somewhere between IC and uncommonly exasperated
about the Miss Uberperfect (complete with multi-syllable elvish
sounding name!) they are stranded with. I especially like the
shamelessly exaggerated way she has all the hallmarks of a MS: related
to canon characters, half-elf, beauty, magic, completely unrealistic
fighting skills and unlikely color scheme... as well as Eowyn's
reaction to her. Oh, and "Mairi"'s full name had me in stitches. Only
draw-back here: the story is too short. I would have loved to see
Mairi suffering a bit.

> Parody
>
> HuP6: Nine Men And A Little Lady by Kielle

Tumbling the different variations of Mary Sues around in the minds of
the fellowship members is fun to read, but what I enjoy most are the
dry remarks that sneak in almost unnoticed – like Legolas musing
whether he could shoot "her" into the head by accident and the
Fellowship getting the latest version of "her" origin story every
night around the fire.). It's a wonderful touch that even Bill the
Pony is annoyed, but my favorite bit is probably the Little Miss "I'm
part Unicorn".

Alternate Universe
HuA4: The Fanfic Lounge: The Lord of the Rings by CNell

Okay. I didn't think I would like this, but I did. It's format is surprising and different, maybe that's part of why it worked for me. The weirdes thing was that the LotR characters were remarkably IN character!

Alternate Universe
HuA6: The Story of Legolas and Enoreth by CNell

Truely inspired. Legolas is so very much himself in this completely off AU version of M-e. Which is what makes it worth reading. Am I the only one that wishes that this author would take a serious tone? I've not looked into any of her other works, but I darn sure will! I laughed. I laughed until I cried. Yes, it was that good! Well, done!

Rolling on the floor laughing my butt off. yep. This is good fun. The only thing is well... I think it should have been longer!!! (unless of course Gimli took her and played Lizzie Borden with his axe!)

Hu1: Dance With Me by Jenolas

Short but very sweet! And hey, who could resist Legolas in that circlet? Yummy.

Hu2: Experiment Gone.Right? by Viv

Different. Very. Gollum sings Karoke? Scary!

Hu6: Joy on a Summer Morning by Ellbee

Whooo. Not at all what I expected in the end. Thank Eru! I was fightened I'd wandered into some unlabled slash. Gave me a start! Well done!

All I can say is, Thank goodness for Amnesty Day! There's still so much to
read, and I've been too busy. So don't think this is the end of my Humor
comments! Or my Adventure...or Men...or Elves....I didn't even get to Rohan
and Numenor, did I? Yep, Thank goodness for Amnesty Day.

Official Voting Ballot

HuA1: Legolas and the Stanley Cup by Bubbles

Being a hockey fan, I couldn't resist this! Being a Hasek fan, I loved
this! Because Legolas and he both got to hoist the cup that year! I think
my favorite part though, is mention of the "geezer line" whose combined age
is 2008. Snerk!

HuA4: The Fanfic Lounge: The Lord of the Rings by CNell

I'm sooo glad she brought LOTR into the Fanfic Lounge, and what fun it was
to see Legolas nearly shoot Orlando. And the Mary Sues outside the
door.terrifying. A very nice sequal in that it definitely was part of the
same Fanfic Lounge as the first DS9 one, but also quite different, giving us
a new taste of that magical realm where the Secretary dwells.

HuA5: The Fanfic Lounge: The Two Towers by CNell

And she did it again! Ooh, I so need a ROTK Fanfic Lounge story! I love
this series. The Fanfic Lounge is not only hilarious but also just plain
imaginative: Another realm where the characters go to rest after we put them
through fanfic. How genius is that?!

HuA6: The Story of Legolas and Enoreth by CNell

Absolutely wonderful. Yet another hilarious story from the Fanfic Lounge,
and yet a departure from it. For Legolas is not resting from the fanfic her
but being put through it! I laughed out loud while reading this, honestly,
especially the part where he kissed her and then let her fall to the ground.
Brilliant. I expect no less from CNell. This is probably the best Mary Sue
story you'll ever read. Especially if you hate them.

HuP1: A Maiden from a Distant World by CNell

I nearly missed this one, and what a shame that would have been. CNell's
sense of humor conquers again. This is, hands down, my favorite "girl falls
into Middle-Earth" stories. No one can do it as well as CNell.

HuP4: If Your Nightly News Covered the Silmarillion by erunyauve

This was really quite funny. I love a good parody/satire like this. Very
entertaining. Thank you.

HuP6: Nine Men And A Little Lady by Kielle

I read this first somewhere else and loved it. It is histerical! And I'm
pretty sure I misspelled that. Dang, my spelling ability is decreasing. Oh
well. It was funny! Very, very funny! And it still is! I think my favorite
was Legolas complaining about the random orc attacks. And Gandalf having to
fall on his sword. And Pippin thinking that torture is better than being
with the Sue. And Galadriel's comments about the One Ring leaving, too.
This is a classic!

Hu1: Dance With Me by Jenolas

Galadriel to the rescue! That was cute and thank goodness she was there to
save him!

Hu7: Legolas' No Good Rotten Day by Siobhan with inspiration from Cassia

Poor Legolas! Quite funny! But it doesn't quite seem finished. This one
could be stretched this out and keep us laughing in sympathy for our poor
elf all day!

Hu10: Out of the Frying Pan and Into the Fire by bryn_bnw

This story was a whole lot of fun, even though I mostly only read the
Legolas and Gimli parts. I was fully able to suspend my disbelief and just
have fun with the story that was written.

Hu13: The Eight Companions: A Battle for an Elf's Sanity by Ellipsis

Very funny. I'm glad Ellipsis brought it to a fitting close. I enjoyed this
quite a bit. I especially liked the beginning when Legolas and his friends
hatch the plan, but the execution of it was fun as well. And the Feanorians
didn't stand a chance!

Hu15: The Jewel in the Crown by Alawa

A surprising look at Aragorn's new crown a very entertaining short story.
Whatever inspired Alawa to write this, I may never know.

Hu18: The Romance that Never Was by bryn_bnw

Oh, my! That was hilarious! Good balance between tension and farce! And what
a perfectly fitting end for Mary Sues and other gravitational anomalies!
Keep it up!

AUTHORS (remember to comment on the writer as regards to the category, not
the story, here):

HuA1: Alawa

Alawa has quite an imagination. I would never have come up with such a
thought that a jewel in the crown was a .. Don't want to spoil.

HuA7: Bryn (aka bryn_bnw)

Bryn_bnw has a twisted sense of humor. And that's the way we like it! I had
a lot of fun reading her stories featuring Legolas, and most especially the
Romance that Never Was.

HuA8: Bubbles

Bubbles really is a very silly person. Or a monkey chained to a keyboard, as
her disclaimer states. Still, she made a 'Bou fan out of me! I crack up
every time I go to the site and read the latest games. And I love her for
using Hasek's Stanley Cup-winning year, as Legolas's NHL debut.

HuA11: CNell

CNell is brilliantly funny. I loved the Fanfic Lounge from its first (Star
Trek: Deep Space Nine) inseption and was so happy to see her tackle LOTR and
now I'm dying for a ROTK Fanfic Lounge from her. And then there is The
Story of Legolas and Enoreth, which was just fantastic. Legolas was never a
buffoon, and yet even he did very funny things.

HuA16: Ellipsis

The whole idea for her Eight Companions story was brilliant and I'm always
jealous of people who can carry humor past more than just a little bit of
dialogue.

HuA18: erunyauve

Erunyauve wrote the newscast very well. It suited the toopic and was also
quite funny, as it would be if the Silmarillion was like the nightly news.

HuA21: Jenolas

I like Jenolas's stories. She provides a great break from all the torture
fic. I just wish she'd learn to put THE END on so I'd know I wasn't getting
into a WIP.

HuA22: Kielle

Kielle is a pioneer! Her Nine Men.is a classic, often used for inspiration.
But none of them quite have the sparkle of the first. Kielle's the genius
that started it all. She balances humor and farcity without making it a
complete farce, and that's a delicate balance.

HuA28: Siobhan with inspiration from Cassia

Sio can write the angst, but she can also write the humor, and it's always
nice (and dangerous) when she gets together with Cassia.

Official Voting Ballot

Alternate Universe

HuA2: No Living Man by Elana

Well that certainly left me laughing. Quite a few enemies fit the bill,
didn't they. That prophet really should have been more specific, huh?

Alternate Universe

HuA3: Slightly Muddled by Lindelea

Cute, very cute. I find it hard to believe that Lindelea could keep coming
up with these modern sayings (perhaps from several parts of the world) for 7
chapters, and oh, the preview!

Alternate Universe

HuA7: T'was the Night Before Helm's Deep by Erin's Daughter

I liked best the part where it said the spear lodged in his throat was a
bit of a distraction. ;-) I'd say so! Cleverly done story there.

Parody

HuP2: Boromir: The Owner's Guide and Maintenance Manual by Theresa Green

Oh, that was cute! I especially liked the troubleshooting note about being
accidentally sent a FARAMIR unit. And of course I'd like to know where to
get a Mk I and Mk II LEGOLAS

Romance

HuR3: I'm WHAT? by Ellbee

URL: http://www.fanfiction.net/s/1282382/1/

Rating: PG-13 suggestiveness; references to mpreg

Romance Partners: Legolas/Aragorn

Summary: Nine months in the life of Legolas, Bridget-style. You COULD call
this a sort of homage to all those MPREG stories out there.

Hu2: Experiment Gone.Right? by Viv

And here I was expecting an Elf. Hey, I've got a lot of wiry hardware and
posters in my home office. Anyone got the recipe for Legolas. If not, I'll
take Voronwe….

Hu11: Secrets We Dare Not Tell by Coriel

Oh, that was not at all what I expected! But it's quite funny. Thank
goodness Gimli never found out!

Hu14: The Ents of Wrath by Bryn (aka bryn_bnw)

URL: http://www.storiesofarda.com/chapterlistview.asp?SID=726

Rating: G

Romance Partners: n/a

Summary: Into the depths of Fanghorn we go! Merry and Pippin
meet...Treebeard. In which our favorite Elf, Ranger, Dwarf, and Wizard have
a time sorting THIS one out, and we discover why Ents are trees. A bit of
fun nonsense. (Cameos by Eomer, Theoden, Haldir, Rumil, Galadriel, and
Celeborn.)

AUTHORS (remember to comment on the writer as regards to the category, not
the story, here):

´
HuA12: Coriel

Thank your sister for me, Coriel, for encouraging you to write that secret
that dare not be told.

HuA14: Elana

Elana did a fine job with a silly little story! I knew she could write
drabbles, now I know she can write humor, too.

HuA17: Erin's Daughter

Who would have thought to put the minions of Morgoth and Sauron into a
corporation or union-style meeting? Well, Erin's Daughter, apparently. Very
clever idea and carried out rather well.

HuA23: Lindelea

Thanks for the spoof of badfic with modern language, Lindelea, you did a
hilarious job.

HuA30: Viv

Viv put a lovely twist ending on her story. I didn't expect Pippin or
Gollum. Good job on keeping the suspense. And the descriptions of the
computer area were done quite well, too.
