MEFAwards Drama and Romance Official Ballot Posted by Jo Dancingtree October 05, 2004 - 15:21:18 Topic ID# 2297Incomplete
RmI10: Winter Fire by Cuthalion
URL: http://www.fanfiction.net/s/1699534
Rating: R Rape, Violence, sexual situations
Romance Partners: Damrod/f
Summary: If Middle Earth was real, and Tolkien recorded what he saw there, could another visitor be sent, and for what purpose?
I was intrigued when Cuthalion told me she intended to write a "serious mary sue" - but, considering the efforts in that genre I had already seen, I wasn't certain it could be done. I am enormously impressed that she succeeded, not only in making a serious story of it, but spinning a tale of depth and pathos that I will never forget.
The heroine is utterly human and believable, and the rationale for her arrival in Middle Earth is convincingly handled. The supporting characters come to life in all their varied strengths, vanities, foibles, and (in one case) villainy. Ioreth, the woman in the Houses of Healing who won fame for saying, "The hands of the King bring healing," is a delight, tart and sweet as a wildling apple. And the other half of the romance - Damrod, who was hardly more than named by Tolkien - becomes a man of fortitude and tenderness, and sexier than Brad Pitt. And Merry - oh my, I wouldn't have guessed that Merriadoc is such a devil with the ladies!
I'll never again read Tolkien's account of the siege of Minas Tirith without feeling that I know much more than he's telling me, because Cuthalion showed me "the rest of the story." Thanks for transporting me to Middle Earth, right along with Noerwen.

Re: MEFAwards Drama and Romance Official Ballot Posted by Ainaechoiriel October 06, 2004 - 23:07:48 Topic ID# 2297Jo, since this was posted early (Drama and Romance didn't start until Oct.
6, 12:00 am Central US--check the "12am Central US is what where?" database
to see when it would be ontime in your time zone), it can't be counted.
But since Romance and Drama have now opened, all you really need do is
repost it. The repost will be counted as it will be official.
Remember, everyone, though I did say I would post the ballots in the Files
section, I said you have to wait to post the votes until the categories are
open (or on Amnesty Day). So remember not to post your votes early. Check
the "12am Central US is what where?" database to see when 12am Central US is
for your time zone so you'll know when it is too early. We go by the time
stamps on the e-mails to see what comes in time and what comes early or
late).
