Faramir/Eowyn
RmFE2: Knight's Service/Later by Tanaqui
Oh! Poor Eowyn and Faramir. Could almost taste their frustration. I loved the
scene with Eomer and the remark about furthering relations with Dol Amroth!!
Too cute. And Pippin being so smart at the end...*hee*
Faramir/Eowyn
RmFE3: Snowdrops and Bluebells by Regina
How difficult was it to write this in first person POV? I find writing that
way very difficult, at least writing stories. It was, howerver, a really good
look into Eowyn's feelings and thoughts. I always wondered just how much time
there was between her killing the witch king and knowing that she loved
Faramir. Maybe it was a case of them being in an intense situation, so things
happened faster, but I always thought it felt too short of a time. This was a
good gap-filler for me because of that, to see that she did struggle. And I
loved that you gave Merry a big role. I read so much elf fiction that it's
nice to read about the roles the hobbits actually played. Well done.
Faramir/Eowyn
RmFE4: The Braided Heart by Thevina Finduilas
What a great tradition, and it fits perfectly with the Rohirrim. I can just
see Eowyn making it. Nicely done.
Faramir/Eowyn
RmFE5: The Influence of Kindred Desires by Tanaqui
Oh yes, at the end of a good book, I always want to ask, but what happened
after that? I was glad to read some of what 'after' was here. Faramir and Eowyn
are my favorite couple from the books. You did a great job showing them and
their love for one another. Well done!
Featuring Haldir
RmH1: Amarie & Haldir: Paths of Destiny by Julie
First, I must tell you that I don't read much het, but I do read yours. I know
I don't say it enough but I really like the light touch you have and the
minimal angst type romances you write. Your ladies are so likeable. I want
them to "win" at the end and get their elf. For me, fanfic is a way to escape
reality, and find some entertainment, so your stories, with the great
characters and well thought out storylines make for great reading.
As always, I love your Haldir. Even the brief meeting in the beginning chapters
of this story gives me a good idea of what I'm going to find later on. You give
him the right touch of arrogance, and mystery, and compassion so that he
doesn't just seem like a bully.
Now, the whole thing about her father coming to her in dreams, that's
interesting, I'm kind of curious as to why he still visits her in Lorien, I
guess. And it looks like things are quickly heating up between Amarie and
Haldir, I can't remember exactly what Galadriel said, but it was something
about a gold thread or something, so obviously, the two of them have some
connection. I have to confess, Amarie annoys me a bit, she told Haldir she
wouldn't lie, but she *is* lying by omission by not telling him that she
understands the elvish. I have feeling that will be a big issue soon.
Ah, I knew it would be a big issue. And I do think Haldir was a little harsh,
if he saw what was going on, he should have stopped it sooner, at least in my
opinion. Can hardly blame her for jumping the gun. And how is she supposed to
feel about the men? I mean, okay, she knows that they are scared of her and
call her names, but it's all she's known. She still can't trust the elves
totally, I think. However, I do like the way things are heating up between her
and Haldir...*grin*
Ooh, I wanted to cry for her after Haldir yelled at her, I'm glad Celeborn was
able to get her to do it. And though I've read much of this once, I *blush*
don't remember what happens and what Ennis's purpose is. Or how Amarie and
Haldir had a connection. *keeps reading*
Okay, I read the part about their connection. (Thank you for not having anyone
die and come back, that particular plot is a pet peeve of mine after having
read it too many times)! I liked the idea that Haldir and Amarie really had to
save each other. The whole Ennis plot line surprised me a bit. (I have to
ask, did you plan that or change it after you started getting feeback about
Ennis and Lonarie?)
I loved the epilogue (and yes, Galadhadric arrows are the best, though my
personal favorite has always been Rumil :) Have you done any side stories
about Ferodir? I can't remember if I've seen any archived anywhere. I'd be
interested to find out more about him :)
Nicely done, entertaining, light hearted, happy ending. Thank you!
Featuring Haldir
RmH2: Khila Amin by Julie and Fianna
I think it's odd that a human healer can heal an elf when the elven healers
can't, but I'm willing to see what happens. Who can resist an injured (and
probably way grumpy) Haldir? *grin* Okay, Keara has her own fears about being
able to help, I see and yes, Haldir was definitely pissed when he realized how
she heals. I guess he won't like to be obligated to her, but I have a feeling
he won't refuse either. That has the makings of a nice little conflict before
the final victory, won't it? *smiles*
I guess when you have a gift, and know how to use it, you have to, even if you
don't know why. Good that she'll soon find out, I bet. I don't mean to sound
trite here, but I do love a good romance and I've read enough that I know what
to expect, I think, though that doesn't mean I enjoy them any less!
Gah, I just noticed this is in first person, I'm a dork. That's hard to write
that and keep it consistent, but it's well done here. I'm at the archery
tournament right now, and anxious to see how things turn out. And I want to
know a little bit more about Keara, actually. I assume there is a lot more than
meets the eye.
Interesting turn of events for her, having the elves need her like that. Also
and interesting choice at the end, though I can't say I'd have trouble making
the decision...since one of the final results would be to get Haldir. *Grin* I
know she wanted to do her part and help, but I have to admit, I was getting a
bit frustrated at her stubbornness--to keep going when she was getting so weak
from helping all of them. However, it turned out welll in the end.
Interesting sort of tweak with her making the choice instead of finding out she
was half elvish or something.
Oh, also, it was a tiny bit uncomfortable reading in first person, because I'm
not used to it, but it was also part of what made the whole story work, I
think. It had very little dialogue, and of course, we never knew what anyone
else was really thinking or feeling, but you did a good job in making sure the
we, along with Keara, could interpret others' moods and emotions.

RmH4: Perfectly Happy by Alexcat
Oh yeah. "Even the damn horse glowed." Too funny. And so like the Haldir I've

Well, out of the mouths of babes. Legolas's little sister certainly called

friendship when Elrohir calls it love.

RmL6: The Elf Friend's Tale by Alexcat
It's easy to see the progression of their friendship in the books; I'm glad

RmI3: Elanor's Revenge by Julie & Fianna
I printed this out and read it all in one go for this. (Did you know it's 350
some pages long so far?) Anyway, it's my favorite of your stories. I like
Elanor. She's a good original character, likeable, but not so perky she
irritates. I really like your (both Julie's and Fianna's) views of Haldir and
his brothers. I can so see some of the stuff he says and does. I like the way
you're letting the story develop naturally and slowly, we get the chance to
know Elanor, Haldir and the other characters in the story before the romance
part really takes off.
Great touches too, I especially like the part where Elanor figures out she's
had an affect--a physical one--on Haldir and the plants in the talan bloom,
well the one does. That was cute. I guess what makes me like this story so
much, even though I really don't read much het, is that you both have such good
attention to detail, and the whole story is just that--a story. I know how
things will turn out, at least for Haldir and Elanor, and that's okay, mostly
because getting there is what's fun with it. All the little misunderstandings,
and the things they found out about each other and themselves, are so great.
We get to see Elanor grow up and realize how she used Lana and others to hide
behind. We get to see Haldir let down his walls and let Elanor in. We even
see changes in Rumil and Orophin, and their love lives.
Too often, when some authors attempt to write in Professor Tolkien's world,
they get so heavy and serious. What I really like about this story, is that
it's a good story, a good tale, and it's light and enjoyable and totally
readable. I don't know about others, but I tend to read fan fiction that isn't
dark, or too angsty, or too heavy. I'm probably offending others who read this
feedback, but there is some fanfic out there that reminds me of research
papers. The story is secondary to showing how much knowledge the author has.
On the other hand, I don't like fanfic where everyone is out of character or
something is said or done totally out of place, because I obviously like
Tolkien's world. What I'm not saying very well is that I like your view of
Lorien, elves, and Haldir and his family in particular. No, it's not totally
canon but it really captures the flavor and essence of Tolkien the way I see
it, without trying to duplicate him.
What I really want to say is that Elanor's Revenge is just a darn good story,
it has a good beat and is't easy to dance to. I'll give it a 90. (Okay, I'm
sorry, I couldn't resist, I hope I'm not dating myself too badly--that's from
American Bandstand, just in case you don't recognize it!:)

RmI8: The Gift by Mirasaui
I was caught up in this story in the first few paragraphs. I love the whole
plot, and each of your characters seem so right to me. (Well, okay, Elrond is
sometimes more of a jerk than I see him, but it's understandable to a point)
It was so realistic that Lindir would feel the way he did, that Glorfindel
didn't like him, and that he had no place where he really fit in. And Haldir
was such a dear, always ready to help. I'm interested to see what all the gift

RmR6: Warrior by Mirasaui
I've read this a couple of times now, and I have to admit, I think I try to
hard. I mean, I knew the second time that it was a doll they were looking for,
but having the elf show up on the ship to the havens makes me wonder if there
was a real person or at least, I don't know, their spirit attached to that
doll. And I still want to know, where did the doll go? *hee*
Rm1: Ever Onward by Alexcat
You know I'm not much of a Gandalf fan, but I really can see this. Celeborn and

Rm3: Jealous by Oakenshield
You wrote the twins as naughty and mischievous as I often picture them, and as
good-hearted! I'm glad the whole scheme didn't backfire either!
Rm5: Quickening by Tyellas
*hee* I can SOOOO see that happening! Very entertaining!
Rm7: Spring In Imladris by CC
The twins really do need to learn how to control how they share their emotions
and such. Hope they talk to Elrond soon. And Elladan, yes, it's hard to
ignore those arrogant elves, isn't it?
Oh dear, Lindir and this fainting thing...that's not good, I think whatever
they all know, they really ought to tell him, keeping it a secret is obviously
not doing one bit of good!
Oh, Yes, Gildor and Orophin! You do love those almost-unrequited love
relationships, don't you?! *grin* Or at least relationships where they're too
silly and blind to see how the other one really feels! Just like males though.
*grin*
Oh dear poor Elladan, torn between two crushes! Or maybe lucky! And Elrohir,
those visions and nightmares, he's not in very good shape either, I guess, like
Lindir.
Orophin! *laughs* Poor thing, the twins, Lalorn and knives, he has his work
cut out for him now! And I'm really liking the dream sequences with Haldir and
Lindir. If I were Haldir, I'd be confused too, I liked how he asked himself if
it was a dream or not at the beginning.
It must be difficult for anyone who falls in love with the twins, I'd think
they'd all feel a little left out. Or maybe a little overwhelmed at not only
getting one twin, but perhaps the second as well.
Oh, of course, now that Gildor and Orophin have found each other, Elladan is
confused. *grin* I liked the part Orophin said about not spending their time
left on Aman in pain and loneliness, he's very smart.
I'm not sure, but I think they all over-react sometimes. I mean, youngsters
will be youngsters and the adults sometimes add to it when they fuss and worry
so much.
AUTHORS (remember to comment on the writer as regards to the category, not the
story, here):
Poetry
RPA2: Naresha
Forever My Heart
I don't usually read poetry, but I read Naresha's because it's a story and she
tells it in a straightforward, easy-to-read way.
RA2: Alexcat
Perfectly Happy, Simply a Kiss, The Elf Friend's Tale, Ever Onward
More stories by Alexcat that paint a picture, not overly done, but with just
the right amount of color and feeling. Alexcat is always easy to read and
entertaining.
RA5: CC
Love, Spring In Imladris
CC shows us two different types of story here, one short and one longer, part
of a serial. She adapts well to write both without shortchanging either one.
RA12: Eresse
Tender Musings
Eresse is a consistently entertaining and enjoyable read with her series
starring Legolas and Elrohir. I know I'm never going to be disappointed with
the story.
RA17: Julie
Amarie & Haldir: Paths of Destiny, Khila Amin
Julie has a light touch and even though the stories themselves aren't always
happy or without angst, it's never cloying or heavy. It's very easy to sit
down and read her work in one sitting because you get drawn into the story so
well.
RA18: Julie & Fianna
Elanor's Revenge
Julie and Fianna have a great chemistry and partnership. I can't tell where
one of them starts and the other one ends. That's not always possible with
co-written fics, and their cooperation here is well worth it. They write a
lovely story, with great characters that you come to care about very much and I
always regret the end of a chapter.
RA19: Kharessa Bloodrose
Vanilla Cream
Kharessa is definitely the queen of teasing and understatement. She knows her
characters and lets them speak through her. Always a good read.
RA26: Mirasaui
The Gift, Warrior
Mirasaui is newer to the fandom, but has absorbed enough of it to make her
writing feel familiar and welcoming. Her stories have a good emotional style,
and I look forward to each chapter she posts.
RA28: Oakenshield
To My Shining Light, Jealous
More straightforward pieces from Oakenshield, where the characters and emotions
are strong, and the images are easy to visualize. Oaks makes her stories seem
very real and believable as well as entertaining.
RA33: RennWench
Why?
Rennwench has a very loose, easy sort of story telling style. I love the tempo
she sets with most of her pieces, though. She uses pacing so effectively to
indicate strong emotional build ups.

Well done.

their love for one another.

Re: Romance--Official Voting Ballot Posted by Lady Aranel October 12, 2004 - 7:55:50 Topic ID# 2318Faramir/Eowyn
RmFE2: Knight's Service/Later by Tanaqui
I love this piece, there is so much more than romance here! The humor in Faramir's dunking and Pippin's distress are perfect. There is a good mix of emotions here! Uncertainty and sadness, love and comfort. Wonderful characterizations throughout. The interaction with Eomer? Inspired! I could feel Faramir's discomfort at being discovered in a trysting place by his soon to be brother-in-law, not to mention catching him in the same mission with Faramir's own cousin! The actual lovemaking scene is not what one might expect. Tender and fraught with emotion and some uncertainty, yet once they begin it is sweet and sexy and HOT. The epilouge with Faramir actually being grateful for Pippin's faux pas and wanting to repeat it... I could see the looks that passed between all of them and Pippin's grin... wonderful!
RmFE5: The Influence of Kindred Desires by Tanaqui
Weddings. Pomp and circumstance and nobles and guests, oh my! Tanaqui has done it again, she's gone believably where few have gone before. These are the events surrounding Faramir and Eowyn's wedding and the full gambit of emotions that all of that implies. Aragorn's appearance here as councilor and trusted friend amazed me, as Tanaqui is more known for her writing of the younger Steward than the King. However, Aragorn was spot on. I could picture him perfectly. Faramir's uncertainty is endearing and makes me wish I was as lucky as Eowyn! Tanaqui fleshes out Elphir and Erchirion well as members of the wedding party and makes them believable. A cast of other lesser known characters make appearances as well, an undertaking that should daunt the most experienced writer, but Tanaqui has done it with confidence and aplomb. They are all as I would picture them and I'm never left to wonder if they really *would* say this or do that. The wedding scene was done well, a lesser gifter writer could have bored the reader to tears here, but Tanaqui keeps me interested and wanting to see how it will unfold. The forging of a sword by Gimli and a sheath by Legolas as Faramir's wedding gift from Eowyn was a touching and fitting tribute, and one that made my heart go, "yes!" :-) And then there is the wedding night itself... humor filled as Faramir's cousins tend to his undressing and then as Faramir and Eowyn discover each other in bed it is tender, touching and filled with desire and love.. as well as some not so perfect moments. Very realistic and yet still very erotic. Well done!

RmH1: Amarie & Haldir: Paths of Destiny by Julie
This story was interesting to me mostly because of the characterization of Haldir. I seriously liked him and his stern and aggravating ways. This was written like the standard romance with the two protagonists in conflict but eventually coming to love one anotherı but Julie does it in a very well written way. It also gave us the term ıgaladhric arrowı. *smile*
Featuring Haldir
RmH5: Why? by RennWench
Sad, heartbreaking, poetic. I like this story for it lyrical flow and sparseness of words. It doesnıt need a lot of words to convey such strong emotion.
Featuring Legolas
RmL5: Tender Musings by Eresse
All that I have read of this series is lovelyı for Elladan to see what perfection his brother and Legolas yet not be able to tell them yet is touching.

RmI3: Elanor's Revenge by Julie & Fianna
I love the humor in this story and I love the awful tease of making us wait forever for the lovers to consummate their union. Written in the usual seamless style of Julie and Fianna.

RmI8: The Gift by Mirasaui
Every chapter of this story is a delight. The characters are so well drawn and the story suspsensful and dramatic. I always look forward another chapter.

RmP3: Forever My Heart by Naresha
I pretty much love anything about Celeborn and Haldir and Nareshaıs poem has that sad edge to the eroticism.

RmR3: To My Shining Light by Oakenshield
This one is sad and heart wrenching, something that Oak is very good at. I can feel Erestorıs pain and sorrow. Tears welled in my eyes as I read it.
Rivendell
RmR5: Vanilla Cream by Kharessa Bloodrose
And I thought Vanilla was boring. I love the way your senses are draw into this sweet little love story. Though not graphic at all, it is extremely sensuous and erotic, as well as Romantic.
Rivendell
RmR6: Warrior by Mirasaui
When I first started this one, I wasnıt sure where it was going but as I got into it I was fascinated by it. The story of Elrohir and his lost toy was sad but at least Erestor did find something precious. There is much more to the story than thatı it is complex and wistful and very worth the read.
Rm3: Jealous by Oakenshield
This story is simply a delight. Jealous Gimli is a wonderful thing to behold. This tale is a bit more lighthearted than some of Oakıs but it is every bit as compelling and well written.
Rm5: Quickening by Tyellas
This one is a simple delight. We have met the horses before in Tyellası work but this one is just purely wonderful.
Rm8: Swept Away by Larian Elensar
I have read this story several times and every time, I cry my eyes out. Both characters are so likable and so sweetı meeting and becoming friends. I love Rumilıs boldness and Theodredıs shyness and one has to love grumpy Haldir. There is not enough Theodred fic out there. The ending to this one will bring a tear to the hardest of hearts I think. I count it among my favorite stories!

RPA2: Naresha
Forever My Heart
Naresha often writes poetry instead of stories and her poetry is storytelling and lyrical at the same time.
RA12: Eresse
Tender Musings
As I have said in precious votes, Eresseıs love for her subjects is really quite obvious and her writing style most pleasant to read.
RA17: Julie
Amarie & Haldir: Paths of Destiny, Khila Amin
Julie is a talented writer who can suck you right into her world and make you see her characters as vividly as if you were there.
RA18: Julie & Fianna
Elanor's Revenge
Julie and Fianna together give us heroines with grin and characters that are unforgettable.
RA19: Kharessa Bloodrose
Vanilla Cream
Kharessaıa work flows and winds its way around sensuously to make you be able to see, smell and taste what she talks about.
RA26: Mirasaui
The Gift, Warrior
Mira writes with loving and great detail but it is not distracting but rather enhances her work. Her characters are laid with the same loving detail and I tend to fall in love with them too.
RA28: Oakenshield
To My Shining Light, Jealous
Oak is also another marvelous writer. I can almost believe that she was thereı her style is that clear and thereıs always a bit of melancholy that I like.
RA33: RennWench
Why?
Rennıs stories are lyrical as her poetry and I like it. It is a refreshing difference.
RA40: Tyellas

Tyellas can write anything, period, and make me believe it. She happens to be my favorite writer in the entire Fandom.

Faramir/Eowyn
RmFE2: Knight's Service/Later by Tanaqui
Sweet, touching, funny, and dear: this was exactly the way I always
imagined Faramir to be in private. You've also given Eowyn a
proactive role in lovemaking, which is entirely appropriate for her.
In all, a very fine setup for some very tender smut.
Faramir/Eowyn
RmFE4: The Braided Heart by Thevina Finduilas
Those flashbacks with her mother knocked my socks off. What smooth
writing! This piece is more about aura than anything else. It lulls,
strokes, chuckles, and soothes. There's nothing dangerous here. And
in the Middle-earth that Eowyn has known, that in itself is pretty
magnificent
Featuring Haldir
RmH4: Perfectly Happy by Alexcat
"Lord Elrond would not spit on Thranduil if he were on fire" ... You
know, I've heard a variation of that line in deep East Texas
parlance, but it was hilarious imagining it from the mind of an elf.
In fact, Haldir's "voice" is very amusing overall. I love the dry
humour you've given him, and his progression. Very nice
characterization, which is a trick in such a short piece.
Featuring Haldir
RmH5: Why? by RennWench
URL: http://www.ofelvesandmen.com/Stories/R/RennWench/Why.htm
This line gave me the shivers: "The bedding kept your scent for
weeks." What a powerul image: simple but something anyone who has
ever had and lost can understand.

RmL1: Eternally by Jennifer Lee & Ellbee

There are a few tropes that folks always warn against: soul-mates,
short-term amnesia, and arranged marriages are three. However, those
warnings should come with an out clause: all these things can become
magical if they're done correctly. And you two sold me completely.
Part of it is pacing: nothing in this piece felt rushed. Part of it,
of course, is characterization. Isobel is a strong character, easy
to believe and believe in. More than any of that, though, your plot
choices are impressive. You never took the easy way out, even at the
end. That's what made this story feel real and not-entirely-happy-
ending-ish.

RmL2: In the Midst of Adversity by Maram68

It's been a long time since I read this story, but I wanted to re-
read it for this contest. Once again, as before, I'm impressed by
your adherence to Tolkien's vision, in terms of both language and
events. This whole story is so carefully a faithful retelling of the
professor's work, but with one crucial change: Cyrene. However, far
from compromising the story like so many original characters do,
Cyrene adds a new and intriguing dimension to the tale. She makes
the world larger, not smaller, and more identifiable as an alternate
history of our Earth. Amazons, after all, appeared in Homeric epics;
why, then, could they not have existed in earlier Ages? You've woven
the two mythologies together so securely that, at the end of the
story, the fabric is strong. Rather like the central romantic
relationship. Very nice work, Maram.

RmL6: The Elf Friend's Tale by Alexcat
"Gimli felt exposed to the universe." ... How very in-character for
a dwarf. Never once in this piece did I forget the differences
between elves and dwarves, but in this piece, those differences
seemed only to complement each other. Very touching.
Featuring Legolas
RmL7: To Have and To Hold by Lady Rheena
See, the thing about this story that makes it so durned charming is
the POV character: "I wondered if kicking the prince in the shins
would count as treason." Her refreshing chatty personality had me
chuckling all the way through, making it impossible to become bored.
Plus, Malhon is adorable.
Gondor
RmG4: Speaking of Love... by Dwimordene
First the obvious thing: Yay for an original pairing. But there's
more to this piece than a pairing. The whole piece is like that
metaphorical ant and his honey: It starts sweet, winds outward on
the shell, wanders close to the edge of daylight, but comes back to
the secret honey in the end. Lovely.
Hobbits
RmHob1: A Little Night Music by Ariel
URL: http://www.storiesofarda.com/chapterlistview.asp?SID=1710
Your shire is warm and wonderful and I could live a lifetime there.
In this story, you've merged sex with the Shire itself, bringing a
homey natural feeling to the encounter. And more than that, the
twist at the end is so inherently Samwise, it was nearly inevitable.

RmI2: At Last by Jennifer Lee & Ellbee
I sincerely hope ya'll finish this story. The beginning is already
even better than Eternally. You have a way of describing war that
makes me feel both horror and pride. Does that even make sense? I
want to cry, watching Isobel at work in the houses of healing, but I
also want to honor the heroes, of which she is one. Really gorgeous
so far, you two. Don't give up on Isobel just yet.

RmI7: The Cursed Queen of Angmar by KhazarKhum
Cursed Queen is one of my all-time favorite fics, which is bizarre
since it isn't even completed and I usually prefer stories that have
noticable beginnings, middles, and ends. Still, this story starts
out swinging and never lets up. From Ariashal's unfortunate marriage
history to her unpleasantly dysfunctional family, you've taken
cliches and made them into gems. Her dry acceptance of her "curse"
is almost a veiled send-up of Mary Sues, and it gives Ariashal a
clear voice right from the beginning. Throughout, characterizations
are rich and nuanced; action scenes grab the gut and pull; and then
there's the witch king himself. Wowza. Who'd've thought an invisible
dude could be so darned sexy? But he's more than that, of course.
He's magnigifent, and I'm right there with Ariashal, amazed and
impressed. The meeting and falling in love chapters were lovely, but
my favorite part so far has been the long arc in Rhudaur, with
conflict and adversity and a sweet, sweet justice. I can't tell you
how satisfying that mini-conclusion was. I'll just admit it now:
You've turned me into a witch-king fangirl. Believe me, I was the
last one expecting *that* to happen.
Poetry
RmP1: A Hole Possessed by Marta
Bizarre and oddly unsettling, but also appropriate for Lobelia. And,
yes, the sustained punny metaphor was highly amusing.
Poetry
RmP5: Love me, Urgren by Werecat
This poem is clear and uncomplicated, swimming in details and wholly
appropriate sentiment. It is, simply, and orc's voice. I can't
imagine a better representation of orcish love than the trophies the
speaker would lay at the feet of his Urgren: greased hair, pierced
flesh, elf hides, and music drummed on ghastly instruments. But it's
also sweet. In the end, orc boys aren't so different from human
boys: they all want to show their womenfolk the best of themselves,
to offer up the best gifts they can imagine, in the pursuit of love.
Were I Urgren, I'd surely be impressed.
Rivendell
RmR3: To My Shining Light by Oakenshield
To think Erestor was a tormented soul, but the depth of his agony
resonated here. The most impressive thing, though, wasn't his pain.
It was his love. I believed completely the depth of his love, mostly
because of this line: "He would have given as much for Elrond to
love Glorfindel as he would have for Glorfindel to love him." That
is not a selfish emotion. What's depicted here is something
beautiful.
Rm3: Jealous by Oakenshield
Gotta love them matchmaking twins. And Gimli was adorable.
Rm4: Lady Love an Outlaw by Chathol-Linn
Incredible. The way this adventure was paced, I just couldn't stop
reading it. The fight scenes were exquisite, the Onion Man and
healing scene so thick in the senses I swear I smelled onions. I
loved the characterisations of Lothiriel and Eomer both as poets,
and of her "elvish blood." I wasn't looking for plot holes, but I
certainly didn't find any: every action begat the next in such a
sensible way that events never felt forced or contrived. That is
masterful plotting; I am so envious of this ability. Overlying all
of the technical genius, though, were the details: how many miles
Eomer could travel in good conditions and in bad, the architecture
of Edoras, the split skirt that Lothiriel wore to ride. Those little
details made the setting come alive. This was masterful storytelling
from beginning to end. Thank you so much for the wild ride.
Rm10: The Yellow Bird by CinnamonGrrl
This story has a stately grace and sense of rules that reminds me
strongly of 19th c. romance. Mischief is soft and refined; love is
thick and sweet. It's the kind of story a girl curls up with alone
and reads with a sigh, savoring the happy ending like a dessert. I
enjoyed the interweaving romances and the distinct characters, and
the patience of Emmelin, letting her love appear in subtle gifts
year after year, struck me as particularly elvish.
