Hor1: Captive of Darkness by Cassia

I knew this one sounded familiar. I've read it before, but enjoyed seeing it
again. I really don't normally like things that are too AU, but I think you
walked that line nicely, keeping Elrond and Legolas very much elf-like and in
character, while giving them a new adventure to experience. Very interesting
reason for the evil king to want the Mirkwood royals dead, and the collar was a
neat touch! And great wrap-up, finished the story while leaving room for more
adventures--sign of a good sequel writer! Well done!

Hor5: The Dead Walk Tonight by MN Theis

Eww. Bleh. I know, it says horror. I read the summary and the first paragraph
or two and you had me hooked. I couldn't stop reading. Yeah, I know, just
like every Stephen King I've ever read, they scare me, but I absolutely have to
read it all. Very icky (and I mean that as a compliment)

She's back again! This ballot isn't too bad, though, because there were
fewer horror entries. So you can all breath a sigh of relief.

STORIES

------------------------------

>>Hor2: Coavalta by Zimraphel

This story never fails to give me goosebumps. Iım usually not a fan of the
first person POV, but it fits so well in this story! So many things have
faded away, and the idea that this elf has even forgotten how he died is a
bit unsettling. Heıs so uncertain about many things, but what makes this
even more unsettling are the few things he IS certain about. Such as the
fact that he would really appreciate this mortal body that is peering down
at him. I love how other elements creep in, like the possibility of refusing
the summons to Mandos or how the waters keep churning the darkness, never
letting it settle. Finally, the last lines just make me shiver. Sometimes,
the abyss gazes back, and sometimes it doesnıt like what it sees.

>>Hor4: The Complexities of Power by Watcherchild

Interesting look at Sauron. Iıll confess that I liked the first part best.
There was something both eerie and familiar in the fact that Melkor kept
returning and looking for his answer, and that Sauron kept avoiding the
question even as he slowly changed. But the second section between Sauron
and Gothmog was also good, especially when Sauron wonders about his own will
and his supposed freedom.

>>Hor5: The Dead Walk Tonight by MN Theis

Spooky little thrill ride that reminds me very much of a story about a
boarding house I read when I was little. That story gave me nightmares for a
week, and this brings back those memories uncomfortably well. The scene was
set very well in the opening moments, an I like Eomerıs initial edginess
that gradually goes away. Itıs one of those moments where you scream at the
characters to leave but they never listen, and thatıs half the fun.

>>Hor6: The Lure of the Darkness by Ainaechoiriel

Iım a sucker for any fic that enhances the darkness of Mirkwood, and this
fic not only does that but also shows the contrast with Thranduilıs realm.
Together, it makes for a very dark setting at the end of the fic. I love the
idea that the elves most at risk in the dark were those who had never seen
light. And the fic seems to embody that idea, giving us the light first
before the warriors move into the dark. We know exactly what the shadows and
why they should be feared. Itıs an incredible parallel between message and
structure. I love also how Legolas is portrayed here: confident and bold but
also prudent. He knows where to push and where to turn back. We conclude on
the edge of the darkness, because Legolas and the other elves refuse to go
closer to Dol Guldur, and we are thankful that they do not. Great writing
and great atmosphere.

>>Hor7: The Other by Dana Lindelea

Interesting addition to the Brandybuck family history. The idea that one
hobbit did indeed return from the campaign against Angmar is creepy in and
of itself, and Lindelea makes good use of contrasts to tell the whole story.
We start at the end, go back to the beginning, and gradually fill in the
gaps as we go. Good stuff.

>>Hor8: The Sorcerer's Apprentice by Erunyauve

I always knew there was something seriously wrong with the Witch-king. Now I
know why. Wonderfully twisted tale about a boy who desperately needs
therapy, though I doubt that even the Nımenıreans could do much for him. I
enjoyed the way this story was framed as a vital piece of intelligence
passed from Gandalf to Glorfindel and how Khamılıs origins were partially
tied in with Sauronıs decision to settle in Dol Guldur. Nice foreboding all
around, and I like the idea that the Witch-king could trace his ancestry
back to Melian. Thatıs disconcerting, actually.

>>Hor9: The Truth of Ugliness by Watcherchild

At the heart of all temptation and all corruption lies a grain of truth.
Itıs what makes these things so dangerous. To see it play out here was
chilling, but I think what really chilled me most was the thought that
Nellin had no idea that Amle was dead. For some reason, that really got to
me.

----------------------

AUTHORS

----------------------

>>HorA1: Ainaechoiriel

Extremes are best told in contrasts and comparisons, and Ainaechoiriel has
done just that in her fic. The difference between light and dark (as well as
why this difference needs to be recognized by those who live between the
two) is illustrated very well. Ainae keeps up a brisk pace that serves the
story well and gives us enough of a glimpse of light beyond the darkness
that we truly appreciate the horror of the situation. She expertly puts
Legolas and his company in the gray areas where neither light nor darkness
holds complete sway, and then she gives us the bright, innocent elven child
set against the darkness that surrounds Dol Guldur. Very effective
atmospheric technique.

>>HorA7: Watcherchild

Watcherchild uses classic seduction and temptation techniques in these
stories, and they provide much of the horror all by themselves. The fact
that darkness will return again and again until an answer is given, and that
darkness will be unusually patient in the for that answer, is an unnerving
concept. You can reject it as often as you like, but you will never be
completely free of it.

>>HorA8: Zimraphel

The true power of Zimraphelıs writing is in leaving so much unspoken.
Zimraphel shows but never tells, leaving readers to infer and guess at the
details. For horror writing, this is remarkably effective. The mindıs
creativity is sometimes far more effective for creating a state of fear, and
Zimraphel takes advantage of that by painting a picture of forgotten worlds,
uncertainty, and shadows. But one thing is never left in doubt, and that is
the feelings of the elf involved in the tale. And out of those feelings, the
readerıs mind can create entirely new worlds of horror. Very effective
writing technique.

Hor2: Coavalta by Zimraphel

Scary? Yeah. Shudder. I don't think I'd be too curious about those faces in the marsh, and even less if I knew this elf was wandering around there somewhere looking for a 'house'. urk.

Hor6: The Lure of the Darkness by Ainaechoiriel

I found this particularly scary, possibly because of the creepy spider characterization. <shiver>. I also thought Legolas was very well done, valiant and in character. I would have liked to have seen his reaction to finding the body of the child however. The ending seemed pre-emptive. I would have liked to seen if they would have fled or if Legolas, angered, would have sought to slay the spider. Alas, I'll suppose I'll just have imagine what might have happened on my own.

Horror

Official Voting Ballot

Hor1: Captive of Darkness by Cassia

This was my first Cassia story, and they had me hooked from the first
chapter. Legolas is captured, true, but not without a lot of effort,
showing that even young, he is a strong warrior. And from there the angst
goes up and up and intrigue grows within the plot. Elrond arrived, but will
he rescue poor Legolas and blow his cover orregretably let the young Elf
suffer? It doesn't let up until the very end.

Hor2: Coavalta by Zimraphel

I've read this one before, but it deserved a second look. It's so
underplayed and yet so darn spooky. The ending is just perfect. Perfectly
evil or horrible, very fitting for the Horror category. It rings so true of
what it might be like for one of the Elves caught in the Dead Marshes, which
was perhaps the scariest part of the LOTR trilogy for me. Tolkien didn't
give the bodies voice, but Zimraphel does here. And it's all the scarier
for it.

Hor4: The Complexities of Power by Watcherchild

Whoa. Sick and twisted, as the subject warrants. And how interesting to
find some sympathy in Sauron and a Balrog but one that is brushed away and
leaves the cruelty behind.

Hor5: The Dead Walk Tonight by MN Theis

A nicely spooky story. And well-written, too and mostly error-free if I
remember rightly.. Not that I like the fact that Legolas died, but at least
he went down fighting. ;-) No happy ending on this one, but then, this is
the Horror category.

Hor7: The Other by Dana Lindelea

This being the Horror category, I was actually afraid that there wouldn't be
a happy ending here. Good suspense and build up to, in the end, the obvious
thing the Other was. I liked how the time jumped from the present thing
they were about to do to the past.

Hor8: The Sorcerer's Apprentice by Erunyauve

A realistic look at how the Witch King may have come to be, and a moral
lesson as well, as to what bullying can possibly lead to.

Hor9: The Truth of Ugliness by Watcherchild

A very good, but disturbing story, which fits this category nicely. I
particularly liked what happened with the femaleand how the story mirrored
the action in that it seems we forgot about the female only to realize hat
Nellin has forgotten about her. And even then, Melkor twists it, makes it a
new torture, telling Nellin the truth after having convinced him of a lie.

AUTHORS (remember to comment on the writer as regards to the category, not
the story, here):

HorA2: Cassia

Cassia was probably the author that got to me admit that I, yes, am a
torture-fic fan. And also a Aragorn-and-Legolas-friendship-fan. And then
she teamed up with Siobhan and wrote one of the most memorable series in
LOTR fanfic.

HorA3: Dana Lindelea

Dana and Lindelea did a good job keeping their story spooky suspenseful, and
weaving in and out of the present time was really a great idea.

HorA4: Erunyauve

Erunyauve managed to humanize the Witch King and show his downfall in a way
we can only hope George Lucus will do for Anakin Skywalker.

HorA5: MN Theis

Maggie has proven she can write incredibly long fics, and here she proves
she can write them short. And scary, and not save Legolas in the end. ;-)

HorA7: Watcherchild

Watcherchild did a superb job at imagining the torture that might turn an
Elf into an Orc. And I was impressed that someone could even imagine how it
was that Sauron was corrupted, but Watcherchild managed quite well and
actually made me understand in some small way.

HorA8: Zimraphel

It's no surprise to me that Zimraphel can write horror. I think she writes
everything well. She pulled off the spookiness in this so well, so
underplayed. As someone else said, it's what she leaves unsaid that makes
the difference. Zimraphel got into the head of the unhoused Elf and got
into the evil that crept into him. Yet he still sounds like an Elf.
