Nice and spooky for Halloween for sure. Easy to believe that the land does
remember the elves. I know there are places where it remembers Native
Americans...
My6: That Way by Werecat
Oh yes! I don't know a cat in the world who wouldn't stand up to a Ringwraith.
After all, a wraith is just evil. A cat is...well, a CAT!
My8: The Next Step by Watcherchild
I'm impressed with the amount of research authors put into a story; and then
use that information to write their own version of missing lore. Very creative.
Also seems totally logical.

Re: Mystery--Official Voting Ballot Posted by Thundera Tiger October 14, 2004 - 14:39:10 Topic ID# 2372Yet another ballot! And may I say, once again, just how thankful I am for
these awards? They've forced me to read stories I might not have otherwise

this story from until I saw the title ıUnbinding the Boxı in the story
itself. Then it all came flooding back. This is a fun mystery in which most
of the story is known to the reader but not to the characters, which makes
for an interesting experience. But what I like best is the fact that Gimli
gets a starring (albeit largely unconscious) role. The dwarf definitely
needs more publicity.

I read it for these awards. First of all, Halbarad gets a starring role, and
thatıs going to win me over on sheer novelty alone. I love Halbarad and Iıve
always regretted the fact that there just arenıt enough fics out there about
him. But this story not only has a healthy dose of Halbarad, but it pairs
him up with Gandalf and characterizes both of them so well that I have a
hard time believing this was not a part of Tolkienıs canon. There are so
many little moments that say so much about the characters involved, insert
just a nice twist of humor, and then get right back on track. Such as
Halbaradıs blank stare at Gandalfıs request for a handkerchief, Aragornıs
comment about being too young to understand his own life, and a hilariously
frank discussion about good beheading strokes. Those are just a few; the
entire story is peppered with moments like that. And itıs a great mystery.
Youıre always guessing, always wondering, but youıve been told just enough
to realize that something very wrong is going on. Besides Halbarad and
Gandalf, Aragorn is characterized terrifically, and I love how the fact that
heıs been out hunting Gollum and the Ring has taken him away from the other
Rangers. To finish up, the OCs are stunning, and the plot is great. Very
moving, very fast, and very good at leaving you hanging around hoping that
just a bit more information is going to come your way. It tells you enough
to expect a twist, but when the full twist comes, itıs a thing of beauty!
and I love the expansion upon the idea that the land never really forgets.
Itıs an idea you find throughout Tolkien, and I think itıs used well here.
Pippin, and Sam their first night away from Hobbiton. Except that this story
is much darker. I liked the references to Tolkienıs Lost Tales, Queen
Berıthiel, and to the song itself. The cat seems like a formidable character
in his own right. If anyone could stand up to the Witch-king like that, it
would probably be him. Go kitty!
because itıs about the Avari, and we so rarely get to hear their side of the
story. Theyıre even rare than Gimli and Halbarad in fics, and I think the
characterization of the Avari as a people was really well done. Finally, it
seemed to me that the crux of the fic was the idea that there was no good or
evil and that Ilıvatar didnıt have sides, which is actually an idea that
Iıve been kicking around for a while. The opening pages of the Silmarillion
seem to support that view if interpreted a certain way, and I think the idea
was explored nicely in this fic.

amazing ability to dangle just enough information that we leap to
conclusions only to find that the conclusions are just the tip of the
iceberg. With deft pacing and remarkable OCs, Meckinock portrays a
mystery/drama story that kept me glued to my screen for the duration of the
ride and still has me somewhat speechless. What a story! The plot itself is
superb, and Meckinock throws in ties to pre-LotR left and right, giving us a
rich foundation for the fic and tying it into events that will happen later.
Thereıs some great foreshadowing mixed in as well, but I think what I like
best is Meckinockıs ability to characterize. Characterization can take place
throughout the story as a continuing arc, or it can happen briefly with but
a few well-placed words. Either way, both canon characters and original
characters are full, complete individuals. Even those who never actually
appear in the fic (Elladan and Elrohir, in particular) are characterized
well. It makes the drama that much more vivid and real, and the reader
becomes just as obsessed about solving the mystery as Halbarad is.

My1: Adagio by Rose Sared
What I liked most about this story was the relationships between Aragorn,
Legolas, and Gimli. A genuine care for each other showed through, and the
characterizations were done well. I also liked the original characters,
particularly of Gleowyn. No Mary Sue here!
My2: Arda Unmarred by Casey Toh
I like this version. In fact, I wasn't sure at first where Tolkien left off
and Casey began, as I've not read the HOME. Good job.
My4: In the Hands of the Enemy by meckinock
I love the characterization of Halbarad! He's funny, rough, scary at times,
and so very three-dimensional. I feel like I've finally gotten to know the
guy. This is the most 3-D portrayal of him I've ever read. I love this
line: "Hell have all those complacent little Boffins and Bolgers in an
uproar within a week.", which brings us to Tillfield, anotehr well-rounded
character, though this time, an original one. And don't even get me started
on Rolly. Kept me guessing through it all: bad, good, liar, honest, bad,
liar.... And the whole angsty story ends with a good laugh or three.
Thanks!
My5: Shades of the Immortal by Levade
An interesting twist on that bit of text, and an interesting twist on the
subject of crop circles. So that's where they come from! Good
characterization. I'm guessing a Hobbit, definitely someone from the
country, not a city person.
My6: That Way by Werecat
I do love cats! (Anybody want a kitten? I have 3 ready for adoption!) And
I loved seeing a cat unafraid of the Nazgul and wily enough to lie to it.
Cats are proud creatures and this story shows that. I also liked the idea
that the older cats shared stories to their kittens so that the cat knew the
history of his kind. Lovely! My kitties would be proud.
My9: The Seventh Stone by Cassia and Sio
Cassia and Siobhan deliver again! Action, suspense, angst, and a bit of
blood here and there. The ending was the right decision. It wouldn't have
been right if they'd managed to keep the palantir. And a special note on the
bad guy's lackeys. Cassia and Siobhan kept them from being 2-D bad guys and
gave them some depth and humanity, and that is a mature thing for any writer
to do.
AUTHORS (remember to comment on the writer as regards to the category, not
the story, here):
MyA2: Cassia and Sio
Cassia and Siobhan know how to keep the suspense coming. You'd think they'd
be predictable by now, but no, you still don't know what's around the next
corner. If you are looking for a fun, entertaining roller coaster ride, any
story by these two will do just fine!
MyA3: Levade
Levade did a great job of evoking the spooky. The story left it vague as to
whether the Elves were ghosts. They behaved like ghosts, but the narrator
was not afraid and hoped his children could see them. Nice balance there.
MyA4: meckinock
I think In the Hands... was the first story by meckinock that I've ever
read. And not knowing his/her gender, I will have a hard time expounding on
his/her ability to write. Well, the ability was shown to be of high
callibre, with an intricate plot, few mistakes or typos, wonderful
characterizations and a flare for both supreme angst and laugh-out-loud
humor. Meckinock is a fine author and one to look out for. Even if he/she
didn't write about Legolas....
MyA8: Werecat
From the sound of the penname, and the main character of the story, I'd say
Werecat is a cat person like myself. This author knows cats, that's evident
in the writing of That Way. And good writing it was, giving catas a culture
and history far beyond what we'd normally think of for them.
