the knowledge that Denethor and Faramir are in good hands. And I was right.
I loved the characterizations in this, especially the characterization of
Denethor. Even in his despair and his gloom, he is so utterly rational and
calm. His reasoning about denying supplies to the Rangers in Ithilien makes
a hopeless, prudent kind of sense, though like Faramir, I wished he would
have said otherwise. Those chosen to visit Denethor on the eve of this Yule
were great, particularly the last figure of Finduilas. Faramirıs return and
confusion over Denethorıs change of heart was written well, and as for
Denethor himself, heıs still Denethor, but heıs a Denethor as he might have

Unfortunately, the Leap Years meant I could have a good laugh at his

entirely sure that Ents could be compared to cats, but then, they did manage

Even if it doesnıt, though, it makes for a great mental image. The love

Altarielıs fics, the focus is kept firmly on him, never straying far. The
other participants brought into the story are characterized swiftly and have
their moment, and then Altariel moves on, never losing sight of the final
goal. This is a great twisting of Dickensı famous story, and I think
Altariel has put in all the necessary adaptations to make it work in

taking something from another fandom into Middle-earth, Fileg and Flick take
Middle-earth into Gilbert and Sullivan, with amazing results. The blending
of the story and the alteration of the characters (Iım still feeling for
poor Aragorn and that Leap Year clause) was great, and they managed to keep
enough of the original characterization and story intact to have it come
across in a seriously disturbed version of ıPirates of Penzance.ı You can

Crossover
Official Voting Ballot
C1: A Rift in the Continuum by Aralanthiriel
Funny, though through the silliness lies some rather violent things. Dead
high school girls and bird watchers, and even worse: dreams of Legolas
hacking away with a sword at an ABBA-singing Morgoth! Fortunately, the
conspiracy behind Mulder's missing sister saved the day for all of us, and
Legolas will eventually learn English.
C4: Kings of the Sea by Eledhwen
The characters certainly felt right, even in unfamiliar waters. I would
have liked a mention of Jack's strange swaying and what Aragorn or Legolas
thought about it. It was funny in parts, though I could have used more
action.
C5: Spirits of the House by Altariel
Less of a crossover and more of a morphing, Altariel bring the plot of A
Christmas Carol to Minas Tirith in the Third Age. Denethor must meet the
three ghosts and live the consequences of it. A well done morphing, I must
say! The ghostly visits were so well done and the characterization of
Denethor was wonderful.
C7: The Corsair Papers by Fileg & Flick
Saruman's song was just brilliant, I could hear it, the tune and everything,
in my head as I read. This whole thing is hilarious. Except for the part
about Legolas and Gimli. Ahem!
C8: There and Back Again: The Fellowship Goes to Stalag 13 by San Antonio
Rose
While this story has some of the fun of Hogan's Heroes and mixes some of the
seriousness of LOTR, it also packs some truthful history in a fairly short
package. I was impressed with the tidbits of historical knowledge that
showed through the story, and also the development of the HH characters. Not
having seen Newsies, I can't comment on those much. I'm impressed that S.A.
Rose could keep the Fellowship in character in such a setting. I especially
liked Legolas, of course, and Merry. This is Book!Merry who impressed me
with his quick thinking and sharpness. Way to go!
AUTHORS (remember to comment on the writer as regards to the category, not
the story, here):
CA1: Altariel
Altariel deftly brought A Christmas Carol into the LOTR world without making
it campy or too familiar. She has quite a talent.
CA2: Aralanthiriel
Aralanthiriel keeps things short and sweet, and still funny, and the
characters still feel right. Mulder's enthusiam, Scully's skepticm, CSM's
arrogance, etc.
CA5: Fileg & Flick
These two are dangerous together, I think. :-) In a good way. Gilbert and
Sullivan in disguise perhaps! Quite humorous.
CA8: San Antonio Rose
I was impressed by San Antonio Rose's attention to detail and history. And
her ability to look into each of her characters and find their motivations.
She carries a serious theme balanced inside a humorous story. Or vice versa.
And that takes talent.
