LCC1: Folk of a Different Race by Lemur
I loved celeborn and Aragorn speaking to Legolas and Gimli; separately, but
both saying the same thing. Start, even if you won't see the finish. And
their later conversations with themselves, I thought they actually progressed
quite naturally, the didn't just become friends, they worked towards it, which
made it a lot more...stable. Well done.
Cross-cultural
LCC2: Horses and Verses by Altariel and Isabeau
Nicely done, changing the POV and showing just how easily things can be
misunderstood! I had no worries though, that they wouldn't end up being good
friends, as well as family...
Cross-cultural
LCC4: Keeping Secrets by Deborah Judge
Oh! Totally excellent twist. Lovely!
Cross-cultural
LCC5: Knife Work by Thundera Tiger
I honestly never thought much about that quote before, but I will now, every
time I read the books. I guess it never occurred to me that it took that much
time to use his knife (knives?) instead of a bow. Duh to me! Well done.
Cross-cultural
LCC8: Those Who Remain by Marnie
I read this every couple of months (or maybe weeks), and it always cheers me
up. At the end of the book, I always want to ask 'what happened after?' Thank
you for telling part of what did happen! Sam and Celeborn having something in
common like that was new to me, I mean, I never thought much about it for sure.
So very believable. Well done!
LCC9: To the Bottle I go by Pervinca
Nice look into the fellowship after the fact, looking to their futures. (I have
a hard time seeing Eomer being the big lush of the group though..*Grin*)

Oh, yes, Gimli would compare it all to metal, but he grew too, beyond that, and

LV1: A Gift for Pippin by Gwynnyd
Awww! Yes. You don't see it in the movies, but you do in the books, how Pippin
grows and changes. I'm glad Legolas acknowledges that, kind elf that he is!
Vignette
LV2: A Way Opens by Thevina Finduilas
Nice look at Merry and Eowyn's relationship. Definitely not something that
Tolkien was too specific about, though he hinted that they might be close.
Socks! *laughs* That's a pretty humorous way to tie their friendship
together.
Vignette
LV5: Goes A Courting by Chris
Yes, what a romance! Wonderful story!
Vignette
LV6: Repairs by Isabeau of Greenlea
Lovely. I enjoyed seeing this little scene. I wondered a lot where Legolas
got more arrows and if the others spent their free time sharpening their
blades, I'm glad Gimli had somewhere to fix his axe.
Vignette
LV7: Sting by TreeHugger
Oh! I loved this! Really, such a nice warm feeling, seeing Glorfindel and
Bilbo talking, and Glorfindel remembering. Well done.
L1: A Different Kind of Sacrifice by Suzene Campos
I thought of movie-Gimli and comic relief, that's true, but I wasn't as
horrified by it as some of my acquaintances in the fandom. I liked how you
showed him, not as a buffoon, but secure enough to be the clown at times. Well
done.
L3: Aglarond by ErinRua
Oh, that I could describe anything as well as you did the Glittering Caves. And
I loved the relationship between Gimli and Legolas as you showed it.
L5: Estel by Viv
Wow! You really got me with the last few lines--noble eagle, and hope, and
Elrond watching in pity and humility. *sniffs* Well done.
L6: For The Road by Alawa
Oh! I loved this! I can just see Bilbo making Aragorn sit there and taste
those apples too! Lovely heart-warming story.
L7: Gilraen's Memorial by Alawa
I want more! Maybe you've already written it, but I really want to know more
about Gilraen and Elrond and how their whole dynamic worked. Aragorn's
conversation with her memorial was wonderful, and really, it did make me
curious to find out more!
L8: Leave Us Not In Darkness by Zimraphel
*shudders* I can't think of anything else to say, such a sad sad story.
L12: Promises by Viv
Interesting format. I think you got the message across though. It was
emotional and had action. I wasn't too sure about reading it after I read the
note at the beginning, I think you should take it down, or put it at the end,
as it sort of made me look hard for whatever was 'wrong' when, really, I didn't
notice anything, I just enjoyed the story.
L13: The Gift of Iluvatar by Ariel
Lovely story. I especially liked Aragorn's insight that Frodo himself had
prepared for his quest to end with his own death. Sort of adds to the idea that
he'd saved the world, but not for himself.
L15: Waiting, Wondering, Wandering, Wishing by Gonzai
Nicely done. I liked the little scenes between each of the characters. It was
good to get to know Merry and Pippin, and the others better.
L16: Whistling Past the Graveyard by Shunt
ooh..yes, I think Gimli missed a step though! I knew exactly what you meant
about touching each stair! Well done!

Another one where Gimli takes what he knows and sees the good in something
(someone) he doesn't know.
Vignette
Well done!

Re: The Lord of the Rings--Official Voting Ballot Posted by Stephanie Howe October 21, 2004 - 9:57:22 Topic ID# 2474Sorry, but after browsing the ballot I'm a bit concerned about the site listed for "I Return". To my knowledge it isn't at Tolkien Online, and when I last checked the listing here it was a link to Stories of Arda, where it was supposed to be. Is this a last minute glitch or have wires been crossed somewhere for a while?
Just a little confused . . .

friendship in Lothlırien. What I especially like about this is that elf and
dwarf are given equal time, equal strengths, and equal faults. Itıs not
one-sided, and I very much respect that. I also like the idea that Legolas
and Gimli had to be prompted into it by Celeborn and Aragorn. That strikes
me as appropriate.
very much. Faramirıs opinion of himself and those around him reminds me
quite a bit of some statements Aragorn makes periodically, and I enjoy
seeing the similarity between the two. For Eomerıs part, he doesnıt seem to
realize that he does have moments of political brilliance and he focuses
more on his shortcomings in maneuvering men, which seems very fitting for
his character, too. Good characterizations.
back to Greenwood and Erebor. Thankfully, Coriel fills in the blanks. Both
Legolas and Gimli are strong, imposing characters in this tale, but despite
the presence of my two favorite characters, I actually like the story best
for the minor characters of Glorfindel, Thranduil, and Kali. I donıt think
Iıve seen Glorfindel portrayed quite this way before. Heıs both familiar and
distantly noble, which is an interesting contrast. Thranduil is discerning,
shrewd, and practical. He and Gimli share a lot in common, which is
interesting because Legolas compares Gimli to his mother while Gimli
compares his mother to Thranduil. And finally, the OC Kali has become the
defining model of dwarven women. I loved her character, and I loved her
almost brazen independence.
agree with it, I have to offer up a round of applause for Deborahıs courage
in writing such a fic. Eowyn was also very much in-character, and the fight
between Eowyn and Gimli was told very well. It fit neatly into a somewhat
anxious mood, and provided for some interesting insights.
grateful that Fileg writes the hobbit so well. Faramir is also excellent in
this story, and I enjoyed the references to stars and the comparing of
cultures and how they view the stars. Itıs a very quiet piece but a very
moving one for not only Pippin and Faramir but also for Boromir, who gets
some remarkable characterization despite the fact that heıs dead. Now thatıs
talent.
given and I expected no less. What I wasnıt expecting when I first read this
fic a year ago was how well Marnie could write Sam. Or Rosie. And the way
these three characters come together is nothing less than inspired. It never
would have occurred to me to put them together on the anniversary of Frodoıs
and Galadrielıs departure, but Marnie pulls it off with a flourish. The
highlight of the story for me was the conversation between Celeborn and Sam,
in particular the part where Celeborn relates what he told Galadriel about
taking off Nenya and being with him rather than being alone. I like the
thought that Celeborn was more willing to rely on archers as Thranduil did
than on the rings of the Noldor. There were also great insights into other
characters, such as Orophin and Elrond, the latter of whom did not even
appear in the story. And Celebornıs fear of the Ring in Lothlırien was
related very convincingly. The last part of the story was brilliant with
Rosie tearing into Celeborn for delaying her husband and possibly asking
more of him than she was willing to let him give. I donıt know that I would
be willing to stand up to Celeborn, but I definitely admire Rosieıs spunk.
The close of this story was perfect, and the image of Celeborn singing
Treebeardıs song of the Entwives (which was one of my favorite songs in
LotR) could not have been better. Terrific look at the similarities between
Celeborn and Sam while never forgetting the differences.
both Merry and Pippin dance around their fears in this drabble.
the fire, and the parallels as well as the differences are eerie. Well done.
feeds into the more serious moment as Pippin decides that Merry is just
ıhiding.ı
devotion to Galadriel, I think theyıre very appropriate. I like how he
initially compares her hair to the metals heıs familiar with, but at the end
of the drabble, heıs moved from metal to the Two Trees and how his view as
elves in general has changed. Great character growth, especially given the
confines of a drabble.
their friendship. I love that Gimli compares his friend to things that the
dwarf can readily understand but how heıs also willing to make those initial
first compromises such as comparing the elf in general to a tree. A stone
tree, granted, but a tree nonetheless. And this blending of stone and tree
paves the way for greater understanding.
how the more tangible verse about sun and shadow was given to Boromir while
Aragorn remembered the verse about twilight, which reflects his elven
upbringing and the more uncertain road he walked. Great look at a very young
Boromir who seems to already have a remarkable grasp of military matters and
an equally good look at Thorongil, who already has echoes of what Aragorn
will ultimately become.
immediately grabbed my attention. I love Faramir the Dreamer, especially
when coupled with the idea that the dreamer can be a wise and crafty
fighter, which is essentially what Fileg shows here. The flashback to stars
and Adrahil was done well, and I like the idea of the two warriors and how
theyıre equally useful though one is more obvious than the other.
favorite was probably the first one, because it showed Boromir and Faramir
interacting. And not only interacting but understanding. Theyıre very
different in many respects, but they seem to have realized that these
differences can work to make a better whole, such as Faramir teaching
Boromir to swim and Boromir deciding that it is a soldierıs skill.
feverish visitor was, of course, his father, and Denethor in his madness set
the tone for the rest of the story. Aragornıs arrival was like a breath of
fresh air, and I love the way he talks Faramir through his misgivings and
calls him back to life. Very good understanding of characters and especially
of the healing nature in Aragorn.
equally well done, but Arwen isıwell, fascinating. Faramirıs scrutiny of his
opponent reveals almost as many questions as it does answers, though
considering Arwenıs background, that should not be surprising. Her initial
bearing is one of almost disinterest, but it is clear from the game and
Faramirıs perception of her strategies that she is very aware of what is
going on and enjoying herself. The predatory smiles that begin to come later
as the game moves on are as revealing as they are illusive, and Arwen
remains a curious paradox throughout the story. I find I like this version
of her very much. As for Faramir, his own strategies and thoughts reveal his
keen mind and his love of intellectual thinking even in regards to battles.
I also enjoy how he caught Arwenıs offering and seemed to challenge her on
it at the end. Excellent meeting of two similar and yet very different
minds.
story that got me into LotR fanfiction in the first place. This story
remains my absolute favorite tale in the LotR fandom, and it has never been
dethroned, despite some remarkable attempts from all the exceptional stories
I have read since then. Why do I love this story so much? I donıt think I
could list all the reasons, but Iıll go for my top few. First of all,
characterization. Dwimordene has a firm grasp on every single character
within the books, from minor characters like Arwen and Damrod to my favorite
characters, the Three Hunters. They are the characters that Tolkien made,
but they have been enhance and expounded upon. I think the character Iıve
grown to love most since Dwimordene got her hands on him is Eomer. He is so
defined in this story! Second of all, I love how Dwim keeps her story on
such a close parallel with Tolkienıs. It makes the differences between them
all the more stark and foreboding. Boromir still dies. Merry and Pippin are
still captured. Frodo and Sam still meet Faramir. But other things, such as
Legolas returning to Edoras with Eomer, Aragorn and Gimli passing up
Fangorn, and Frodoıs extreme methods to hide the Ring, are chilling in their
departure from Tolkienıs path. Third, the action sequences. Dwim is a master
of drama, introspection, and dialogue, and these are all expertly used, but
the action is some of the best Iıve ever seen, particularly the Battle of
Edoras. Fourth, tension. And in this, Iım thinking specifically of the
tension in Rohan when Legolas arrives and meets Theoden, Eowyn, Eomer, and
Grıma. The slow build of uncertainty and then ultimately disaster is
something that still floors me every time I go back to read this story. The
tension when Sam and Frodo run into Grishnıkh is of an entirely different
nature but just as compelling. I could go on and on, but Iıll end now and
save you from further rambles about my favorite story save for this: If you
read this, Dwim, thank you! Because of your story, I became involved an
entirely different world and I have loved every minute of it.
beneath Faramirıs command and the soldiers beneath Boromir were fleshed out
well, and their various roles made for a very complete picture of Gondorıs
military. I like the growth that characters show over the course of the
story, both OCs and canon characters. The emotions, thoughts, and events are
all very realistically portrayed.
branches out into territories that the first story never covered, such as
crossovers. That is actually my favorite part of the story so far, and I had
great fun playing ıName that fandomı as well as watching these various
characters interact. The idea of fluffy, cuddly creatures becoming the bane
of everyoneıs existence had me laughing hysterically. Imaginative, twisting
story that capitalizes on the success of the first and expands its borders
well. Really, how can anyone NOT love the stories that gave us mini-Balrogs?
that are cast in such as, ıStill, off you go,ı as Elrond sends the
Fellowship forth. They really made the poem for me.
Iım always amazed when someone else writes them so well. The ending couplet
in this villanelle was a good choice, and thereıs quite a bit of
foreshadowing going on here as far as embracing fire. But I can also see
Denethor becoming passionate about a person, though not necessarily
expressing that passion all the time. And when that person left, I could see
this as an event that changed him. Anyway, great adherence to the form.
bothered me. But I gained new appreciation for them in this poem because it
seemed to me as though they formed a very balanced and very understanding
relationship. And I like the idea that Goldberry sees more to Tom than the
singing, capering guy in yellow boots.
the cynic in me. But I loved this poem. I love the idea of two very
different worlds coming together in an alliance of sorts and finding out
that theyıre better off because of it.
a contest. Tickling Rangers aside, I loved the childlike question and answer
nature of this poem, and I like the sing-song almost carefree attitude. But
the subject matter is dark, making for a very interesting contrast, and for
that reason, I see hobbits being very fond of this poem. I think it would
fit their natures quite well, especially since theyıre always fishing for
words in those more serious moments. Perhaps this song could help them.
Brilliant writing.
structured forms of poetry. And Iım even more jealous of people who can
adhere to the villanelleıs form and make it mean something. Eomerıs fey mood
really comes across in this poem as well as his brashness and his
willingness to die. Because who really knows what heıll find when it
happens?
probably existed but that Tolkien never gave us a name for. Hereıs one of
them, and I very much enjoyed the flashback to Gandalf discovering what was
written upon the Ring. My absolutely favorite line came from one of
Gandalfıs mutterings as he wondered, ıWhere is the wisdom we have lost in
knowledge.ı Thatıs far too common a problem, actually, and it gains new
importance in this story.
into the OCs so that we can connect with them, and then the rug is pulled
out from under our feet. As usual. I knew what was going to happen, but
Gollumıs song still made me freeze, and itıs a testament to Zimraphelıs
writing that I was caught off guard. Good stuff.
dwarves. I wonder if this is the kind of attitude that eventually led them
to a Balrog, but regardless, itıs a wonderful look at how dwarves view their
work in the mines. They court the minerals. They flirt with them, and the
stone seems to flirt back. I love how they all think of the lode as a ısheı
and that when the mithril seems to run out, some bid farewell while others
decide to pursue. There are so many little tidbits caught up in such a small
story. And of course, anything that has to do with the dwarves is going to
draw my attention. They donıt receive nearly enough scrutiny or respect.
dive into all the hidden meanings within it. Iıve found enough to blow me
away already, and Iım certain thereıs more but it almost gives me a headache
to think of it. Gimli is in great form, and I love the little details he
gives out, such as his suspicions that the Orcıs collar hailed from Moria
even though he canıt prove it. The fact that he tries to recover it is a
telling point in its own right, but eventually, he settles for more
practical matters and moves past Moria. In fact, this story moves past quite
a bit. Legolasıs appearance toward the end is a welcome addition and allows
Gimli to say that very few ever see dwarves work. Legolas and Gimli have
moved past that as well, and once the repairs on the axe are finished, they
move past the Hornburg and prepare to face whatever comes next. Things can
be fixed, as Gimli shows us, even if the hurt came from the plunder of his
own people. Great story from just a surface perspective, and brilliant tale
when its depth is taken into account.
and Glorfindel. Bilbo is in every way a hobbit, and a weary one at that
whoıs still trying to come to terms with the fact that he went off and had
an adventure. Glorfindel plays the wise elven lord well as in addition to
the role of gracious host. Good allusions to future events, too.
on the day the Pelennor was overrun. If you read the appendices, you know
that quite a bit is happening on that day aside from the skirmish around
Minas Tirith, but Iıve never seen that fact condensed into fic form so well
before. And each individual scene was in every way a vignette. It was a
quick but thorough look at the characters involved, and I loved the idea of
playing off the senses for the individual scenes. Beautiful writing.
for why Gimli seemed so intent on playing comic sidekick for much of the
movies. Also very much enjoyed was the fact that Legolas and Gimli could so
easily team up against Aragorn in the first part of the story. It seems
Legolas is willing to exploit Gimliıs role as comic relief.
one he chose. Seeing the rest of the Fellowship through her eyes was a
treat, particularly the hobbits with their many children and Legolas, who is
both a concern and a curiosity to the new bride. I loved the way Galadrielıs
gift was addressed, and how Gimli so easily walks the line between dwarven
customs and elven influence. It seems to come naturally to him now, and I
like the development of his character in this direction.
find truly remarkable about it, actually, is that I never realized it was
told from the first person perspective until recently, and I only realized
it was told in present tense when I reread it for these awards. Iım normally
not a fan of either, and the fact that I didnıt even notice them until now
should say something about how well the narrative and the style fit the
story. This is a beautiful capstone to the friendship that has developed
between Legolas and Gimli, and itıs almost as though any lingering doubts or
misgivings are laid to rest in this story. Itıs a powerful piece that lets
us experience the majesty of the caves even as Legolas experiences it by
using a slow, wonderful build to the moment when Gimli finally lets the elf
open his eyes. Beautiful descriptive work and a very quiet, poignant take on
this moment in their friendship.
my favorite ıphone optionsı were the changed options for Orthanc,
particularly the one that instructs you to hang up and call 911 if you are
in a battle. Though the Ringwraith reporting transportation problems was
pretty good, tooı
quite a bit on partings, and the idea of everyone leaving at the end of LotR
is a very bittersweet one. But as the story progressed and Aragorn began to
relate his experience of apple testing in the Shire, it became much more
light-hearted, and by its end, I was grinning. I would dearly love to get my
hands on Bilboıs book as Iım curious about what he might have said
concerning his apple tester. In the end, though there is still a parting,
itıs not nearly as sad and thereıs a sense that the friendship (or at least
reminders of it) will continue. Great story!
characterization of Gilraen, who is dead but still has a strong presence.
Aragorn is given quite a bit of depth in this tale, and through this depth
we get insight into his mother. Gilraen has a very no-nonsense tone in her
sonıs head, which I can see being very useful when growing up around elves.
Iım actually convinced that every elf should have a dwarf to keep himself
balanced, and I can see Gilraenıs down-to-earth practicality and knowledge
of men substituting for that very well.
horror and shock were very real, and Aragornıs compassion and willingness to
do the deed himself made him every inch the king he would soon become.
Gandalf was Gandalf, and I very much enjoyed his second confrontation with
Saruman, who was wonderfully evil. What made it even better (or worse for
Gandalf) was that Saruman was so matter-of-fact about it. The full horror of
doing this to an elf was explained very well by Legolas, whose reluctance to
take action until it was requested was a wonderful statement about his
character and the memories that Sindar elves still carry of the kinslaying.
Excellent work.
considered letting Frodo and Sam die as an act of mercy. That was only a
small point brought out by this story, but it was related very well and it
touched upon the idea of Frodo having to leave Middle-earth in order to find
healing. In the end, I think the choice was ultimately up to Frodo and Sam,
so Iım glad Aragorn gave them the chance to make that choice. But
interesting concept, nonetheless.
enjoyed Pippinıs thoughts in the second chapter when he notes that not only
is he taller but now he is also flatter. Trust a hobbit to concern himself
with that.
bit. I generally like anything that expands on dwarven culture, but this was
especially well told. The descriptions, in particular, were amazing, and I
could picture each and every step the Fellowship took as they followed
Gandalf and Gimli upon the stairs. Nice insert into the journey through
Moria.

a great job with them in these drabbles. She paints them as hobbits, fairly
light-hearted, but she injects just a few sentences that reveal the gravity
of the situation, and it changes the entire tone of the drabble even though
the rest is purely hobbit.
characterize the friendship between Legolas and Gimli. That this balance and
compromise can be summed up in a drabble (and summed up so well!) amazes me
and Iım still shaking my head with jealousy. Good economy of words and good
understanding of the characters!
that are indeed lighthearted, but hidden beneath that is a more serious
subject, and I really like the way Alawa keeps it in the background but
never lets us forget it. Thereıs something of a warning in this poem, but
Alawa never lets it get too solemn, making it accessible to simpler folk
though they might not appreciate all that the Rangers do.
here. Elvenesse doesnıt keep the rhythm and meter as tight as some might,
but the looser structure feels very natural considering that Eomer is
somewhat upset and slightly fey. Great choice of lines and subject matter.
structured forms of poetry, such as the villanelle. The rhythm and meter are
maintained throughout the poem (very appropriate, given Denethorıs formal
nature), the choice of line one and line three were very good, and the lines
woven in to support these ideas were equally good. Fileg makes a very
natural progression of thought and character from beginning to end, and
thatıs difficult to do, especially when your last two lines are identical to
your first and third line.
as well as Gandalf. The story is tightly written and no word is wasted,
which is definitely a credit to Azalais and the focus put into this story.
Even when so many other things could be going on, the narrative stays on
target and delivers.
doesnıt count) and there really isnıt a location given. But none of that
matters, because this is a vignette about dwarves as a race. Thereıs no time
to single out individuals, and one might wonder if there is time to even hit
the entire race, but Chris manages to do it. Using the familiar form of
dating and courtship, Chris sheds light on the more unfamiliar relationship
between dwarves and mines. Great writing technique and very effective,
especially when used in vignette form.
about Gimliıs axe is especially good. The story is focused and follows the
axeıs repair, but along the way, it picks up as many details as it can, such
as Moria plunder, dwarven customs, and dwarven respect for their weapons.
Isabeau allows none of these tidbits to slow the story, but theyıre
definitely present and make for a very enriching look at dwarves in general
and Gimli in particular. I love Isabeauıs repetition of the phrase ıMy axe
was notchedı and how these words mean so many different things to Gimli.
Excellent writing.
this to heart, particularly with the second story here. Each vignette was
short and to the point, like a series of expanded drabbles, and the focus on
various senses and sensations was brilliant. Thevina didnıt focus on any
sense to the exclusion of all others, but there were clearly moments were
one had more attention than the others, and it became a fascinating
balancing act that rotated between various senses. Tight writing and good
choice of style.
there, but I think I like Miltonıs best. Sheıs given Arwen a ruthless and
strategic mind, but sheıs also given her that ageless elven understanding
and she can temper her own competitiveness until such time as that
competitiveness can be unleashed. She also uses a very light touch to paint
Faramir. Weıre never overwhelmed with his mind or his strategies, but rather
we get to know him in smaller details, such as the fact that he managed to
get an extra eight moves out of Arwen on the second game. Thatıs a very
telling point, and itıs done extremely well.
people telling stories. The first has Aragorn recalling his adventure as an
apple tester with Bilbo and the second has Aragorn remembering his mother
and her influence on events in his life. The story that Alawa tells is not
about the stories that others remember, but their tales are used to enhance
and enrich Alawaıs tales. And Alawaıs skill in writing makes it seem as
though Aragorn is there telling us these things himself.
an incredibly talented writer who understands the LotR characters well, and
she is also the owner of an amazing imagination. Iım actually somewhat in
awe of her creativity. She also has a great sense of comedic timing that,
when coupled with her imagination, makes for very memorable moments and
absolutely hilarious situations. Miss Cam can do the one-liners, the
situational irony, the ridiculous, the wry, the tongue-in-cheek, and the
slapstick. Itıs an incredible blend, and you can find them all in her OFUM
stories.
stories. Special interest seems to be given to clothing, and what a
characters wears becomes far more than a simple nod to setting and scenery.
It becomes what a character is and what a character is attempting to say at
a certain moment. I donıt know that Iıve read another author who
characterizes someone through their clothes as well as Coriel does. Itıs an
intriguing technique and one I would like see more often.
ensemble characterization. Even fewer approach her ability to deliver such a
complex plot that ties so well with the original story even as it leaves on
its own adventure. Dwim has kept me guessing throughout her epic, which is a
great treat for me, and she has brought to life in vivid detail my favorite
characters as well as characters I never really understood before. Dwim
writes this Au the way that AUs ought to be written. She keeps it so close
to Tolkienıs canon that itıs painful, especially when the breaks begin to
occur. I actually yelled at my computer when Aragorn and Gimli left Fangorn
to make for Edoras. But I think what really amazes me as far as Dwimıs
writing is concerned is how she shows everyoneıs perspective. Legolasıs
observations clearly come from an elf. Gimliıs views are very much the views
of a dwarf. Eomer sees the world as a frustrated rider of Rohan should see
the world. Samıs practical and very hobbitish look at his situation made me
both laugh and cry. Each character clearly has his/her own voice, and Dwim
plays to that characterıs strengths while also showing how these strengths
can be weaknesses, too. Itıs my opinion that Dwim has the best fanfiction on
her hands, and with that, Iıll be shamelessly add that I would love to see
this story updated soon!
perspective works. Weıre watching this through Gimliıs eyes, who has the
first person POV, but weıre also watching it through Legolasıs eyes. We
donıt see the grandeur and splendor of the caves until Legolas does, even
though Gimli himself is well aware of them. Weıre not privy to many of his
thoughts, but it never feels as though weıre detached from the character. I
can only imagine what a chore this was to write, but however it was done,
the result is stunning. At the end of the story, itıs as though we see
through the eyes of both Gimli and Legolas, and itıs a wonderful narrative
parallel to the fact that the ErinRua has laid the last foundation of
friendship for my two favorite characters. Incredible work!
very delicate and deft touch to make these moments both subtle and
meaningful, and Fileg has such a touch in spades. Fileg doesnıt focus just
on the character or characters but includes scenery, time, place, and other
elements in equal amounts. The result is a very balanced, refreshing take on
various issues that are shaped as much by the people as by the setting.
Everything feeds into the storiesı stillness, and it makes the tales dynamic
without losing the stillness that I have really come to enjoy.
me both jealous grateful. I found the story ıThose who Remainı to be
especially interesting because Celeborn is given the chance to interact with
a hobbit. Marnieıs choice of Sam was great because she went on to draw out
similarities between Frodo and Galadriel, which in turn created similarities
for Sam and Celeborn. Itıs amazing to me how Marnie can draw parallels like
this. Marnie also shows us how to characterize quickly and efficiently, and
she can work in broad strokes (such as characterizing Sindar, Silvan, and
Avari) as well as small strokes (such as Orophinıs brief cameo or the casual
mention of Elrond and Vilya). And in between are the principle characters,
who get a full helping of Marnieıs talents and become unforgettable to the
readers.
does a good job of bringing to life a dwarven superstition. What I
especially like is that the actions taken arenıt explained until the end,
and even then, theyıre only explained in passing. It makes far a much more
subtle story, which contrasts nicely with the fact that Gimli is banging
away on the steps with his axe. Good blend of styles.
expands on one of these very well, tying it in neatly during the brief stay
at Orthanc during which Gandalf breaks Sarumanıs staff. Zimraphel does a
good job of keeping the reader in the dark but of building the tension
through dark hints on Gandalfıs part. Switching the viewpoints around during
the course of the story was very well done, too. Itıs easy to have the story
come across as jerky or uneven when the POV keeps switching, but Zimraphel
makes it a smooth, even blend as all emotions eventually run together and
the power of the story takes over.

STORY
---------------------------------------
>>Cross-culturalA very balanced view of Legolas and Gimli as they begin to hammer out a
>>LCC1: Folk of a Different Race by Lemur
friendship in Lothlırien.
>>Cross-culturalThis fic is laced with an incredibly wry sense of humor, and I enjoyed that
>>LCC2: Horses and Verses by Altariel and Isabeau
>>Cross-culturalItıs my opinion that not nearly enough has been written about the journey
>>LCC3: I Return by Coriel
back to Greenwood and Erebor.
>>Cross-culturalVery daring reinterpretation of Gimli, and even though I donıt necessarily
>>LCC4: Keeping Secrets by Deborah Judge
agree with it, I have to offer up a round of applause for Deborahıs courage
in writing such a fic. Eowyn was also very much in-character, and the fight
between Eowyn and Gimli was told very well. It fit neatly into a somewhat
anxious mood, and provided for some interesting insights.
>>Cross-culturalWe so rarely get to see Pippinıs more mature side in fics, and Iım very
>>LCC6: River of Fallen Stars by Fileg
grateful that Fileg writes the hobbit so well.
Now thatıs
talent.
>>Cross-culturalNobody, and I mean nobody, writes Celeborn as well as Marnie does. Thatıs a
>>LCC8: Those Who Remain by Marnie
given and I expected no less.
>>DrabbleOnce again, the hobbits are robbed for words in a serious moment. I love how
>>LD1: "And get my pipe out of my pack, if it isn't broken." by Lindelea
both Merry and Pippin dance around their fears in this drabble.
>>DrabbleThis drabble harks back to when Frodo was first instructed to put a Ring in
>>LD2: Fireside Chats by Lindelea
the fire, and the parallels as well as the differences are eerie. Well done.
>>DrabblePippin seems eternally optimistic, and I love how the lighthearted flashback
>>LD3: I See the Moon, and the Moon Sees Me by Lindelea
feeds into the more serious moment as Pippin decides that Merry is just
ıhiding.ı
>>DrabbleSome surprisingly poetic turns of phrase coming from Gimli, but given his
>>LD5: That Which is Fairest by Elana
devotion to Galadriel, I think theyıre very appropriate. I like how he
initially compares her hair to the metals heıs familiar with, but at the end
of the drabble, heıs moved from metal to the Two Trees and how his view as
elves in general has changed. Great character growth, especially given the
confines of a drabble.
>>DrabbleOne of the best takes on Gimliıs view of Legolas during the early period of
>>LD7: The Stone Tree by LKK
their friendship.
>>GondorI very much enjoyed this meeting of minds through the use of a song. I like
>>LG1: All of Them Together by Fileg
how the more tangible verse about sun and shadow was given to Boromir while
Aragorn remembered the verse about twilight, which reflects his elven
upbringing and the more uncertain road he walked. Great look at a very young
Boromir who seems to already have a remarkable grasp of military matters and
an equally good look at Thorongil, who already has echoes of what Aragorn
will ultimately become.
>>GondorIım a sucker for Faramir introspection, and the opening of this story
>>LG2: As Truly as the Arrow Flies by Fileg
immediately grabbed my attention.
>>GondorThe three chapters in this story compliment each other very well. My
>>LG3: Breathe by Fileg
favorite was probably the first one, because it showed Boromir and Faramir
interacting. And not only interacting but understanding. Theyıre very
different in many respects, but they seem to have realized that these
differences can work to make a better whole, such as Faramir teaching
Boromir to swim and Boromir deciding that it is a soldierıs skill.
>>GondorI love Faramir pieces, and this one is particularly good. Faramirıs first
>>LG4: Failure by Liz
feverish visitor was, of course, his father, and Denethor in his madness set
the tone for the rest of the story. Aragornıs arrival was like a breath of
fresh air, and I love the way he talks Faramir through his misgivings and
calls him back to life. Very good understanding of characters and especially
of the healing nature in Aragorn.
>>GondorArwen is absolutely fascinating in this story. Faramirıs characterization is
>>LG5: Queen's Gambit by A L Milton
equally well done, but Arwen isıwell, fascinating.
Excellent meeting of two similar and yet very different
minds.
>>IncompleteFirst of all, before writing anything else, I need to say that this is the
>>LI2: Lie Down in Darkness, Rise Up from the Ash by Dwimordene
story that got me into LotR fanfiction in the first place. This story
remains my absolute favorite tale in the LotR fandom, and it has never been
dethroned, despite some remarkable attempts from all the exceptional stories
>>IncompleteExcellent characterization of an OC. Actually, several OCs. The Rangers
>>LI3: Messages by Shakes
beneath Faramirıs command and the soldiers beneath Boromir were fleshed out
well, and their various roles made for a very complete picture of Gondorıs
military. I like the growth that characters show over the course of the
story, both OCs and canon characters. The emotions, thoughts, and events are
all very realistically portrayed.
>>IncompleteHilarity and mayhem. This sequel to OFUM is a very enjoyable ride and
>>LI4: Once More Into the Urple Depths of OFUM by Camilla Sandman
branches out into territories that the first story never covered, such as
>>PoetrySomething very endearing about this poem. I think itıs the almost asides
>>LP1: All Ye Fellowship of Nine by Azalais
that are cast in such as, ıStill, off you go,ı as Elrond sends the
Fellowship forth. They really made the poem for me.
>>PoetryIt might just be me, but I find villanelles insanely difficult to write. So
>>LP2: Finduilas by Fileg
Iım always amazed when someone else writes them so well. The ending couplet
in this villanelle was a good choice, and thereıs quite a bit of
foreshadowing going on here as far as embracing fire. But I can also see
Denethor becoming passionate about a person, though not necessarily
expressing that passion all the time. And when that person left, I could see
this as an event that changed him. Anyway, great adherence to the form.
>>PoetryIım going to openly admit now that Goldberry and Tom Bombadil always
>>LP3: Goldberry's Song by Vulgarweed
bothered me. But I gained new appreciation for them in this poem because it
seemed to me as though they formed a very balanced and very understanding
relationship. And I like the idea that Goldberry sees more to Tom than the
singing, capering guy in yellow boots.
>>PoetryFirst of all, I tend to veer away from anything that smacks of romance. Itıs
>>LP6: The Lion and the Swan by ErinRua
the cynic in me. But I loved this poem. I love the idea of two very
different worlds coming together in an alliance of sorts and finding out
that theyıre better off because of it.
>>PoetryIıll try tickling the Ranger any day, but I think I know who would win such
>>LP7: Tickle the Ranger by Alawa
>>PoetryIım so very jealous of people who can write villanelles. Or any of the more
>>LP8: War Now Calls Us by Elvenesse
structured forms of poetry. And Iım even more jealous of people who can
adhere to the villanelleıs form and make it mean something. Eomerıs fey mood
really comes across in this poem as well as his brashness and his
willingness to die. Because who really knows what heıll find when it
happens?
>>VignetteI love it when stories explore the minor characters, or the characters who
>>LV3: After Such Knowledge by Azalais
probably existed but that Tolkien never gave us a name for.
>>VignetteVery chilling story. Zimraphel delivers as usual, giving us enough insights
>>LV4: For Pity's Sake by Zimraphel
into the OCs so that we can connect with them, and then the rug is pulled
out from under our feet. As usual. I knew what was going to happen, but
Gollumıs song still made me freeze, and itıs a testament to Zimraphelıs
writing that I was caught off guard. Good stuff.
>>VignetteI love this story! Itıs such a great look into the minds and hearts of
>>LV5: Goes A Courting by Chris
>>VignetteThis is one of my favorite stories, and Iım not even going to attempt to
>>LV6: Repairs by Isabeau of Greenlea
dive into all the hidden meanings within it.
>>VignetteGreat history on the sword Sting, and good characterization of both Bilbo
>>LV7: Sting by TreeHugger
and Glorfindel. Bilbo is in every way a hobbit, and a weary one at that
whoıs still trying to come to terms with the fact that he went off and had
an adventure. Glorfindel plays the wise elven lord well as in addition to
the role of gracious host. Good allusions to future events, too.
>>VignetteWow. This is an amazing fic that looks at nearly the whole of Middle-earth
>>LV8: The Hours by Thevina Finduilas
on the day the Pelennor was overrun.
>>L1: A Different Kind of Sacrifice by Suzene CamposMmm. Dwarf stripping. Seriously, though, I really enjoyed the explanation
for why Gimli seemed so intent on playing comic sidekick for much of the
movies. Also very much enjoyed was the fact that Legolas and Gimli could so
easily team up against Aragorn in the first part of the story. It seems
Legolas is willing to exploit Gimliıs role as comic relief.
>>L2: A True Dwarf by PoweroftheBookGimli does indeed need a dwarf to come home to, and I very much liked the
one he chose.
>>L3: Aglarond by ErinRuaErinRua has a clear handle on Legolas and Gimli both in this story. What I
find truly remarkable about it, actually, is that I never realized it was
told from the first person perspective until recently, and I only realized
it was told in present tense when I reread it for these awards.
>>L4: Answering Machines of Middle Earth by LindeleaOh dear. I laughed far more than is healthy during this fic. I think one of
my favorite ıphone optionsı were the changed options for Orthanc,
particularly the one that instructs you to hang up and call 911 if you are
in a battle. Though the Ringwraith reporting transportation problems was
pretty good, tooı
>>L6: For The Road by AlawaThis is such a fun story! It begins with a touch of sadness as it dwells
quite a bit on partings, and the idea of everyone leaving at the end of LotR
is a very bittersweet one.
>>L7: Gilraen's Memorial by AlawaI love this story as much for its characterization of Aragorn as for its
characterization of Gilraen, who is dead but still has a strong presence.
>>L8: Leave Us Not In Darkness by ZimraphelWonderful expansion on a few words found in ıUnfinished Tales.ı Legolasıs
horror and shock were very real, and Aragornıs compassion and willingness to
do the deed himself made him every inch the king he would soon become.
>>L13: The Gift of Iluvatar by ArielUntil I read this, it never occurred to me that Aragorn might have
considered letting Frodo and Sam die as an act of mercy.
>>L15: Waiting, Wondering, Wandering, Wishing by GonzaiGood missing scenes from the hobbitsı side of the story. I particularly
enjoyed Pippinıs thoughts in the second chapter when he notes that not only
is he taller but now he is also flatter. Trust a hobbit to concern himself
with that.
>>L16: Whistling Past the Graveyard by ShuntWonderfully chilling look into dwarven superstitions. I like this quite a
bit. I generally like anything that expands on dwarven culture, but this was
especially well told. The descriptions, in particular, were amazing, and I
could picture each and every step the Fellowship took as they followed
Gandalf and Gimli upon the stairs. Nice insert into the journey through
Moria.

AUTHORS
--------------------
>>DrabbleHobbits in serious moments are tricky creatures to write, and Lindelea does
>>LDA3: Lindelea
a great job with them in these drabbles. She paints them as hobbits, fairly
light-hearted, but she injects just a few sentences that reveal the gravity
of the situation, and it changes the entire tone of the drabble even though
the rest is purely hobbit.
>>DrabbleLKK does a good job of finding the balance and the compromise that
>>LDA4: LKK
characterize the friendship between Legolas and Gimli. That this balance and
compromise can be summed up in a drabble (and summed up so well!) amazes me
and Iım still shaking my head with jealousy. Good economy of words and good
understanding of the characters!
>>PoetryThis poem seems lighthearted, and the structure reminds me of other poems
>>LPA1: Alawa
that are indeed lighthearted, but hidden beneath that is a more serious
subject, and I really like the way Alawa keeps it in the background but
never lets us forget it. Thereıs something of a warning in this poem, but
Alawa never lets it get too solemn, making it accessible to simpler folk
though they might not appreciate all that the Rangers do.
>>PoetryAh, the villanelle. One of my favorite forms of poetry, and itıs done well
>>LPA4: Elvenesse
here. Elvenesse doesnıt keep the rhythm and meter as tight as some might,
but the looser structure feels very natural considering that Eomer is
somewhat upset and slightly fey. Great choice of lines and subject matter.
>>PoetryIım insanely jealous of Filegıs ability to pull off the more difficult and
>>LPA6: Fileg
structured forms of poetry, such as the villanelle.
>>VignetteAzalais does a great job of characterizing the Keeper of the House of Lore
>>LVA1: Azalais
as well as Gandalf. The story is tightly written and no word is wasted,
which is definitely a credit to Azalais and the focus put into this story.
Even when so many other things could be going on, the narrative stays on
target and delivers.
>>VignetteNobody in Chrisıs story is listed by name (well, except for Aulı, but he
>>LVA2: Chris
doesnıt count) and there really isnıt a location given.
>>VignetteIsabeau is a phenomenal writer under any circumstance, but the vignette
>>LVA4: Isabeau of Greenlea
about Gimliıs axe is especially good.
>>VignetteVignettes should be all about the characters, and Thevina Finduilas takes
>>LVA5: Thevina Finduilas
this to heart, particularly with the second story here.
>>LA1: A L MiltonThere are so many different characterizations of Arwen floating around out
there, but I think I like Miltonıs best.
>>LA2: AlawaAlawaıs stories here are fascinating because theyıre stories about other
people telling stories.
>>LA5: Camilla SandmanMiss Cam is well known name in the LotR fandom, and with good reason. She is
an incredibly talented writer who understands the LotR characters well, and
she is also the owner of an amazing imagination. Iım actually somewhat in
awe of her creativity. She also has a great sense of comedic timing that,
when coupled with her imagination, makes for very memorable moments and
absolutely hilarious situations. Miss Cam can do the one-liners, the
situational irony, the ridiculous, the wry, the tongue-in-cheek, and the
slapstick. Itıs an incredible blend, and you can find them all in her OFUM
stories.
>>LA7: CorielWhat I find very interesting about Coriel are the details put into various
>>LA9: DwimordeneNobody writes LotR like Dwimordene does. Very few approach her gift for
ensemble characterization.
>>LA10: ErinRuaWhat really blows me away in ErinRuaıs ıAglarondı is the way that the
perspective works.
>>LA12: FilegFileg has an amazing ability to write the very quiet moments. It takes a
very delicate and deft touch to make these moments both subtle and
meaningful, and Fileg has such a touch in spades.
>>LA22: MarnieMarnieıs ability to write Celeborn and to write him so well has always made
me both jealous grateful.
And in between are the principle characters,
who get a full helping of Marnieıs talents and become unforgettable to the
readers.
>>LA27: ShuntI really respect the authors who choose to play with the dwarves, and Shunt
does a good job of bringing to life a dwarven superstition. What I
especially like is that the actions taken arenıt explained until the end,
and even then, theyıre only explained in passing. It makes far a much more
subtle story, which contrasts nicely with the fact that Gimli is banging
away on the steps with his axe. Good blend of styles.
>>LA31: ZimraphelThe ıUnfinished Talesı are full of wonderful little tidbits, and Zimraphel
expands on one of these very well, tying it in neatly during the brief stay
at Orthanc during which Gandalf breaks Sarumanıs staff.

Look! You did make it to the end of the ballot after all!

LCC5: Knife Work by Thundera Tiger
Well done gap filler and the characterizations are particularly good, each one being as true to real as possible. It also shows in a nice way how the oddly matched cultures managed to workl together.
LCC8: Those Who Remain by Marnie
I have to say that this is the first of Marnieıs fic that I ever read and it makes me cry still. I count it among my favorites. The tone is perfect. Sam IS the Sam we know and Celeborn the stern but loving elflord who suffered much in service of his people and devotion to his wife. Marnie has a rare gift for writing both of them.
LV7: Sting by TreeHugger
A beautiful history of the sword of Bilbo Baggins. I love it when such lovely tales fill the gaps. The characters in this one are well crafted and very much like Tolkien wrote them. Somehow I like to think that little Sting really was young Earendilıs sword.

Summary: The homeward journey for Legolas, from Gondor to Greenwood and
beyond. Some insight into what the War of the Ring must have meant to the
quietest and oft neglected member of the Fellowship, together with his and
Gimli's subsequent efforts to achieve acceptance in opposing worlds.
I found this story very absorbing. I do not normally read stories which do not feature hobbits; this one had the four in the first few chapters, but by the time Legolas and Gimli said farewell to them, I was thoroughly engrossed and did not miss them. What most impressed me was the very *Elvishness* of Legolas and the *Dwarvishness* of Gimli. Their differences were celebrated as being just as much a part of their friendship as the things they had in common. It was a realistic look at the friendship as well, showing that the efforts they made to forge new bonds between their peoples were not completely successful. This story, however, was. I enjoyed it greatly, and was sorry to see it come to an end.

Summary: An AU LotR story -- The Uruk-hai recapture Merry and Pippin and
because of this the story changes. The hobbits suffer many trials and
tribulations as a consequence and are led in a completely different
direction to the original story.
This is one of the few AUs I've read that I have truly enjoyed. I was totally absorbed in reading it, and am very eager to see more of it.
Merry and Pippin are portrayed in a very unique way here, saddled with handicaps and difficulties at every turn, they prove themselves resourceful, loyal and ingenious. They never lose the thing that makes them hobbits through all their trials and tribulations.
I especially like the way the author has forged a special bond between them and Legolas, exploring unknown territory in mind-speech. Other elements that make this story keeping the reader guessing are the portrayal of Orcs, and the way she occasionally twines events back into the original LotR timeline.
I am very eager for more of this story.

Summary: Poor Pippin. He is traumatized from being exposed to the Eye of
Sauron. Everyone thinks he's been really stupid *again* and no one gives him
any sympathy for being tortured by Sauron... except Legolas. Pippin really
didn't do so badly, when you get right down to it.
This was a very sweet little story, in which Legolas gives comfort to Pippin after his fright with the palantir. There are just not enough fics out there with Legolas interacting with the hobbits, but this one stuck in my mind as very lovely, and true to the characters involved.

LCC1: Folk of a Different Race by Lemur
For me, this is the defining story to show how Legolas and Gimli became
friends. This was masterfully done, with each character's thoughts
paralleling the other's though, of course, neither know it. Their grief
over Gandalf's death is portrayed beautifully and their struggle to overcome
their preconceptions of each other's race. This is brilliant.
Cross-cultural
LCC5: Knife Work by Thundera Tiger
A good vignette and a very good explanation for the small increase in
Legolas's number in his contest with Gimli. This is another I can put in my
head as faux-canon. Legolas gets off so unscathed in the movies that we
sometimes forget he was the only Elf at Helm's Deep in the book. And Orcs
and Uruks do hate Elves, don't they? I'd recommend this one to anyone. It
plays well in the cinema of the mind. Well done.
Cross-cultural
LCC6: River of Fallen Stars by Fileg
I loved most the imagery in this story, the stones from the dome and the
stories they told, and the river rushing forward to meet the setting sun. It
shouldn't come as too big a surprise though, Fileg is also a poet.
Drabble
LD3: I See the Moon, and the Moon Sees Me by Lindelea
This was beautiful and I liked the optimism Pippin managed to hold onto when
looking at his stricken cousin.
Drabble
LD5: That Which is Fairest by Elana
How Gimli's eyes were opened by seeing Galadriel and now he can see the
beauty of Elves. If only everyone could learn to see beyond their
prejudices. Well done, Elana
Drabble
LD6: The Moon Sees Somebody I'd Like to See by Lindelea
And the other side of the coin: Merry remembering and worrying over Pippin.
Beautiful again.
Drabble
LD7: The Stone Tree by LKK
I didn't used to think much of drabbles but I've begun reading them since my
birthday cards on HASA. It takes a lot of talent, I think, to write
something so moving in so few words. This one captures a moment of Gimli
reflecting on his friend, an Elf. And he covers so much in those few
thoughts.
Gondor
LG1: All of Them Together by Fileg
Cute story of a relaxed time for Aragorn/Thorongil and a fun game with
Boromir. I like his willingness to play along and I loved the song!
Gondor
LG2: As Truly as the Arrow Flies by Fileg
I recognize the same imagery from Fileg's River of Fallen Stars, only here
they have yet to fall. I loved the relationship between Faramir and his
grandfather, and it makes me glad for him that he had that in his past
considering how his relationship would be with his father later.
Gondor
LG3: Breathe by Fileg
A beautiful trilogy of stories not originally meant to be together. But they
do go together perfectly and form a whole. I like the otherworldly feel of
the second chapter and the peaceful resolution of the third.
Gondor
LG4: Failure by Liz
Oh, I was hoping for just that ending. As all were laying blame on him and
burying him in self-loathing, I hoped it was his suffering under the Black
Breath and/or Morgul wound. Very powerful, indeed, are the weapons of the
enemy, but I like how this explains how Faramire knew Aragorn for his king
when he awoke.
Incomplete
LI2: Lie Down in Darkness, Rise Up from the Ash by Dwimordene
This was one of the first LOTR stories I read. And I'm still reading. It's
one of the tightest AU's I've ever read, where the author took just one
thing out of the original story and then tried to imagine how different it
would be. I admit one of my favorite parts is her italicized naration on
the music. It was that that made me know she wrote symphonies. She takes
some interesting diversions from Tolkien's path, such as brinign the Helm's
Deep fight to Edoras, and yet keeps so close that I find the same annoyances
I had with Tolkien's: Enough Frodo and Sam. I want to see more Legolas! (One
of my favorite scenes will always be when Eomer and Legolas are in prison
and Eomer is so freaked out by Legolas's eyes being open!)
Incomplete
Incomplete
LI4: Once More Into the Urple Depths of OFUM by Camilla Sandman
I like that the OFUM stories are long and episodic. It's a nice pick-me-up
now and then to see a new chapter posted and see badfic roasted so well.
It's all quite silly and the world needs a little silly now and then. And
if you look closely, you can catch my name as a student in Chapter 3, I
think.
Poetry
LP1: All Ye Fellowship of Nine by Azalais
I read this one a long time ago and enjoyed it quite a bit! I hadn't yet
ever tried to write a parody so I was quite impressed with this one. I
still am.
Poetry
LP5: Song Fight at the Swan and Cygnet Saloon by Chathol-Linn
Entertaining poem there! I'm absolutely certain Legolas's song was better,
and what a wonderful person he is, to give the prize to Bard.
Poetry
LP8: War Now Calls Us by Elvenesse
Chilling, especially with the passage noted below. I needed it as I haven't
read LOTR for awhile now. Well done.
Vignette
LV1: A Gift for Pippin by Gwynnyd
Lovely! Book!Legolas has his biting remarks now and then, but I think under
it all, he really is a gentle spirit (when not killing orcs or spiders, of
course). I am glad he recognized Pippin's torment and gave him some
comfort.
Vignette
LV3: After Such Knowledge by Azalais
Very nicely woven story of the keeper of the library, as it were. I liked
how he "listened" for the right scroll. And I like Gandalf's line about
knowledge and wisdom. How true is that?
Vignette
LV4: For Pity's Sake by Zimraphel
Oh dear! Did Gollum do what I think he was planning to do? Yikes. Poor
Bainion. And the others. A well-written story to tell of the Elves that
guarded Legolas and their demise. And seems to go the way of saying Gollum
knew the orcs were coming as he wasn't afraid of them when they came. (Zim,
you have a repeated sentence in there. Not sure if you meant it.)
Vignette
LV5: Goes A Courting by Chris
Until someone else's comment I had no idea that this would be about a Dwarf
and his lode. But it is, and it's a wonderful characterization of Dwarves
in general to show how they love the mining they do.
Vignette
LV6: Repairs by Isabeau of Greenlea
I loved most the character interaction, which was subdued but spoke a lot
about the friendship between Gimli and Legolas. Very interesting thing you
did with the repetition of "my axe is notched". Very well written little
story.
Vignette
LV7: Sting by TreeHugger
This is a lovely story, wistful where it needed to be, amusing at other
times. I, of course, liked the mentions of Legolas and his spiders, but i
recognize it was right not to play them up too highly as they aren't the
purpose of the story. The sprinkle of that information was just right. I
love that Glorfindel was the one to tell him of the story of the sword.
Vignette
LV8: The Hours by Thevina Finduilas
An evokative group of poignant vignettes, bookmarked by Denethor at the
beginning and end. I liked the idea of each focusing on a sense. The Rohan
woman burying her cousin was particularly chilling.
L1: A Different Kind of Sacrifice by Suzene Campos
I mostly like the friendship in this story. Tolkien told us they were
friends, but it often takes fanfic writers to show us that friendship.
Legolas comes across as very Elf-like in this one and Gimli very Drarvish,
and yet they still find themselves friends. I like Gimli's protective streak
for Legolas. But I would like to know why the children tittered.
L2: A True Dwarf by PoweroftheBook
Well, despite being a romance, I liked it. I liked the worries of the
bride-to-be, as they are logical for a Dwarf, especially her worry over his
friendship with an Elf. And Galadriel's hairs.
L3: Aglarond by ErinRua
Beautiful. Absolutely striking. ErinRua's desriptions were powerful, which
is something I am weak at myself. I could see these caves as I read. I'd
still love to see a companion story, from Legolas's point of view taking
Gimli to Fangorn.
L8: Leave Us Not In Darkness by Zimraphel
That story was incredible. The emotions are so strong and so realistic.
The portrayal of Legolas was beautiful and tragic and felt so right. Gandalf
sounded like Gandalf and Zimrpahel worked the plot of theory into canon, or
at least the UT, perfectly. I felt for Legolas, felt his grief and
revulsion. He wanted to end the Elf's suffering but couldn't bring himself
to be a kinslayer. Aragorn, a true friend, offered to help him. Really, an
incredible story.
L11: Only the Beginning by Cassia
Cassia writes another fine story even without her partner, Siobhan. I really
liked Legolas's insight in this one.
L12: Promises by Viv
Oh, that is sad. And the note at the end is sadder. They will never meet
again? So sad, but they deserve to be happy! Did he never again even visit
Eryn Lasgalen? It's a good story, don't mistake. Just a sad one.
L15: Waiting, Wondering, Wandering, Wishing by Gonzai
I read this one long ago, so it suffers from my lapse in memory. But I do
remember having liked it and thought it did well to fill those gaps. Merry
and Faramir staying behind while the others went to the Black Gate, Pippin
hoping he might be found under the troll, Merry going to find Pippin wounded
(a part too quickly skipped over in LOTR, I think) and finally Pippin waking
up and being reunited with Merry. Lovely scenes all of them, filling gaps
quite well.
L16: Whistling Past the Graveyard by Shunt
It took me awhile to realize who the narrator was and the last line came as
a bit of a surprise.

chapter two of Lie Down in the Darkness and you'll see. I swear there is
music in it. Not just the theme. I mean the words. She builds a symhony
with those words. She has such beautiful syntax and phrasing. It's melodic
and complex. I think her background in philosophy really gets used to great
effect in her writing. I can see her stories as I read them, like a mini
cinema in my mind. She claims she favors Aragorn, but she writes Legolas
just as well! She can write drama and horror with the same ability. And
she can do comedy. I'm not sure there isn't anything she can't write! Dwim
will go down as one of the best LOTR fanfic writers in my opinion. She
doesn't just write stories, she writes masterpieces.
LA10: ErinRua
ErinRua did such a wonderful job with the imagery in Aglarond. It's a
weakness of mine. On it's own, my brain can't supply such visualizations,
but when given the right input, it certainly can and what I saw in my mind's
eye was breathtaking.
LA12: Fileg
Fileg is a poet, true, but he/she (gender questions again) can also write
stories and you can feel the poetry within them, even when they don't
contain a poem.
LA13: Gonzai
I've known Gonzai since before her first story (as a wonderful artist) and
am proud to say she was quite good at it from the start! LOTR is not her
first fandom and so we don't see any newbie mistakes with here. She has a
love for the Hobbits and it shows in her stories.
LA14: Iluvien
To Dream
LA16: Lady Coralie
An Aussie in King Aragorn's Court
LA18: Lemur
Lemur writes beautifully, artfully, and intelligently, bringing the
characters more depth while keeping them well in-character as we know them
from canon. Tolkien left the particulars of Gimli and Legolas's friendship
vague, but I think he would be proud of how well Lemur filled that gap.
LA20: Liz
Liz did such a wonderful job evoking again that heartbreak I felt for
Faramir when reading LOTR. And laying it on so much thicker only to have it
come out just like I hoped. Thanks, Liz.
LA24: PoweroftheBook
Powerofthebook actually made Dwarves attractive and romantic to me, quite a
feat as I'm not very mcuh of a Dwarf fan.
LA25: Samus
The Fellowship of the Mutants
LA26: Shakes
Messages
LA27: Shunt
Whistling Past the Graveyard
LA28: Suzene Campos
A Different Kind of Sacrifice
LA29: Thundera Tiger
Thundera Tiger did such a good job with Knife Work. She even managed
something I struggle with: combat. Especially hand-hand.or knife work. I
make a bad puppeteer when I try it but Thundera handled it beautifully.
LA30: Viv
Promises was beautiful, though sad. I really liked that you had Loridel and
Legolas communicate with each other across the distances.
LA31: Zimraphel
I have yet to read a klunker from Zimrpahel's pen. Her stories are powerful
and so-well crafted. You feel them, not just read them. She is an
incredibly talented writer. It was hard finding story NOT to nominate! I
nominated some of them without having read them first, just because I kenw
she was that good an author. I knew I'd read them during Reading Season and
be hard pressed not to vote on them. There is sometimes, for me, a breakout
author in every year's awards season, even on ASC. This year, it is
Zimraphel. I knew some of the others here were great writers. I hadn't yet
come to that realization with Zimraphel. But she convinced me for sure with
this Awards year. I look forward to finding more of her stories for next
year's awards. Truly, I would recommend her to anyone.

The Lord of the Rings
Official Voting Ballot
Cross-cultural
It took me awhile to realize who the narrator was and the last line came as
a bit of a surprise.

the story, here):

Drabble
LDA2: Elana
Elana is someone I know best from her drabbles. I got one for a birthday

this short form.t
Drabble
LDA3: Lindelea
Lindelea is a wonderful drabbler! Drabbles are something I've only recently
felt brave enough to try. It may sound easy.only 100 words. But finding a
story to fit in so few words is the trick. It's a moment, so short that
it's hard to find a full one that only lasts 100 words. Lindelea does time
and again.
Drabble
LDA4: LKK
LKK too just a few words and showed us the friendship Gimli feels for

Vignette
LVA3: Gwynnyd
I'm glad Gwynnyd wrote A Gift for Pippin. It is a scene that needed
writing. Pippin did suffer at that time and I'm glad she saw it and wrote
some comfort for him. And she did a great job.
Vignette
LVA4: Isabeau of Greenlea
Isabeau writes impressively. Taking such a small thing like repairing an ax

Vignette
LVA6: TreeHugger
Treehugger is one of my favorite writers for her humor, but she can also
write the poignant story as well. She knows her characters well and that
shows even in these two (Bilbo and Glorfindel) that she doesn't write as
often as certain others.
Vignette
LVA7: Zimraphel
Zimraphel can write anything. I'm convinced of it. Short, long, Men, Elves,
Gollum.. Her original characters are always so well-drawn and fleshed out,

emotions in her readers.

LCC3: I Return by Coriel
I really wanted to read this one, even though my time was short if I wanted
to get any other stories read for Amnesty Day. I'm very glad I took the
time. It is a masterful work, definitely long but never boring. It's a long
trip back from Isengard to Mirkwood (and then Erebor) after all. Coriel
dealt with the sea-longing and Legolas's inner conflict with it maturely and
realistically. I liked her characterization of Thranduil and that she
didn't make Gloin a softy. It would have been too easy if Legolas had
managed to win him over in just a few days. No, Coriel made the right
choice there. I also love the idea of a love for Legolas in the undying
lands. I, for one, hold out hope that she has not married another and will
be glad to receive his message from Galadriel. This story is well-written,
engrossing and encompassing. I laughed at times, I cringed at times and
actually got tears in my eyes at one particular time (Legolas and
Thranduil's talk about the sea-longing). It is not lacking in plot and does
not lag, and I think I have improved my vocabulary because of it as well. I
could see what Coriel described, very well, though at the same time I was
perplexed by how she might have seen it in her mind's eye and thus so
wonderfully translated it into words. And what about the one's she heard?
Legolas creating his own harmony with echoes in Aglarond. That was
incredible! Beautifully done, Coriel. I am impressed.

I Return
I honestly didn't know what to expect from Coriel, though I should have, as
looking back I can see I read quite a few of her stories. But I think they
were all fairly short. It takes something different to write a story 40
chapters long. And with, I Return, Coriel has proven she has that something.
Her characterizations were wonderful, right down to Scatha and Thranduil's
wolves. Her Elves where Elvish and her Dwarves Dwarvish. Her descriptions
were gorgeous, even when I didn't know some of what she was describing! She
never once bored me despite the length and the lack of gand adventurous
plot. Don't get me wrong, there was plot, but it's a subtler sort, the inner
conflicts and interpersonal ones. Hats off to you, Coriel. Heck, I didn't
even find many typos!
