TH3: Estel and the Hobbit by Eledhwen

Oh, lovely story! I can just see this happening this way, since it's obvious
in the books that Aragorn knew Bilbo fairly well at the time of the council.
Well done.

TH4: In the Hall of the Wood Elf King by TreeHugger

So, did you ever think one little question would lead to something like this
story? Legolas the Sparkly Green..*hee* I almost felt quite sorry for
Thranduil by the end, since he didn't seem to have *any* control over his
family, let alone his kingdom! No wonder he later had a reputation for
drinking. *wink* Actually, he probably felt like he'd been drinking all the
time, so I'm sure he figured why not? There was so much happening all the time,
the story moved very fast, though at times I wondered if you'd get it all
wrapped up. But you did, and quite well, too. I liked meeting Tanglinna, it
was nice to see one of Thranduil's commanders know how far he could push.
*Grin* Great story!

TH7: The Emblem You Chose by Wild Iris

I just re-read The Hobbit so your piece was particularly poignant, showing
again how Thorin's people loved him, and how Thranduil respected him as well.
(And I still don't see where anyone gets that Thranduil is mean, I thought he
showed some great restraint, really)

This is a lovely telling of a possible event! Very imaginative, and just
how I'd picture the young Aragorn. Bilbo is true to character as well, and
delightful. A good read.

A very good read. Well written and beautiful. Both Aragorn and Bilbo are
delightful, as well as the supporting characters.

Look, look, look! It's short(er)!

The Hobbit
Official Voting Ballot

---------------------------

STORIES

---------------------------

>>TH1: Another Mother's Son by Thevina

Especially after a victory, itıs so easy to forget that not everyone came
through the fight intact. This is a great reminder of what Lake-town lost
the night Smaug died. We really donıt see enough fics of this kind,
especially not ones so tenderly written.

>>TH2: Chance Meeting at Rivendell by Aunt Dora Baggins

This was an excellent look at a fairly young Estel. Heıs definitely a
nine-year-old in some respects, but in other ways, heıs unusually mature and
quick for his age. I love all the foreshadowing that went into this fic,
such as the dream Estel had about somehow becoming Beren and returning to
Lıthien, who dwelt in Rivendell. Very telling. Bilboıs characterization was
spot-on, I felt, and it seemed very appropriate to me that Estel taught him
a few basic tricks with his sword. Good friendship foundation story!

>>TH3: Estel and the Hobbit by Eledhwen

Another good story of Estel meeting Bilbo, but actually, I like this story
best for the conversation between Gandalf and Elrond in which they talk
about interfering in other peopleıs affairs. For some reason, that really
amused me. Gilraen was another welcome surprise, and enjoyed her solemn
characterization. It makes a lot of sense to me.

>>TH4: In the Hall of the Wood Elf King by TreeHugger

Absolutely hilarious! And written with that same devil-may-care humor that
landed thirteen dwarves in Bilboıs parlor one afternoon. The willingness to
take things to the extreme is part of what makes ıThe Hobbitı such a fun
read, and the light-heartedness of hobbits in general seems to have infected
most of Mirkwood. The Wood-elves are hilarious in this story, and the OCs
are remarkably complete, even the ones who appear only briefly. My favorite
is probably Tanglinna, whom I see as Glorfindelıs kindred spirit, actually,
but Brethil and Tavor are wonderful characters, too. The dwarves were
brilliant, particularly poor Bombur, and the continual desire to eat oak
leaves left me in stitches. Finally, poor Mr. Baggins is having such a
trying time, and yet such a fun one! I think the real victims in this story
are Thranduil and Legolas, though some of it they did have coming to them.
Brilliant story in which there really isnıt a clear villain (with the
possible exception of forgetful spiders and singing Orcs).

>>TH5: Of Fire and Stars by Gecco

Go Gimli! The dwarf is more than restored to glory after his
ratherıinteresting stint as comic relief throughout much of the movies. He
had a few good moments in the movies, I suppose, but this ficıthis fic shows
Gimli for the warrior he really is. And also for the person he is. The
moments of battle were good, and Gimliıs anger as it developed throughout
the story was intense and believable. But my favorite moment was actually a
somewhat quiet scene in which Gimli is asked (after a rather gruesome
bloodbath during which he avenged his dead friends and their family) if he
found what he was looking for. Gimliıs response made the fic for me when he
said no, that he instead found something in himself that he wished heıd
never seen. This isnıt a bloodthirsty depiction of a monster in dwarfıs
clothing or a bumbling sidekick who makes witty remarks and tumbles down the
sides of hills. This is a balanced, thinking, fierce, and incredibly loyal
dwarf who clings to the hope that his father is still alive and wrestles
with ideas of rage and vengeance. Very well-rounded look at one of my
favorite Tolkien characters.

>>TH6: Sucking Eggses by Marta

Amazingly convincing portrayal of Gollum. And this is a wonderful moment
caught out of time. I really can see this fitting neatly into canon as Bilbo
asks about eggs and Gollum tries desperately to remember. Itıs intriguing to
see just how much of Smıagol Bilbo was able to bring to the surface. I think
Slinkerıs memories are stronger than Stinker anticipates. Also interesting
is how his thoughts kept straying to the Ring in the beginning, but as
Gollum went further back, Smıagol became stronger and thoughts of the Ring
began to fade away. Very nice touch and an excellent job of showing just how
Gollum remembered the answer to the riddle about eggs.

>>TH7: The Emblem You Chose by Wild Iris

Brilliant little vignette! I really wish Tolkien had included more details
about Thorinıs tomb and the fact that everyone paid tribute to the dwarf.
Elves and dwarves can come together, though it seemed to take extreme
circumstances to do it in this case. Nevertheless, there was a very
peaceful, somber feeling about this fic that gave me hope for future
friendship, however tentative it might be.

--------------------

AUTHORS

--------------------

>>THA1: Aunt Dora Baggins

Dora does an excellent job of telling a fic that can stand on its own but
that is also clearly connected to larger events. The brief glimpse weıre
given of Estel and Bilbo is great within its own right, and itıs also a
wonderful echo of things to come.

>>THA3: Gecco

I love Gimli, and I love the way that Gecco has written him. Gecco takes the
time to let Gimliıs anger and hurt fester, and then Gimli is set loose only
to find that vengeance isnıt all itıs cracked up to be. Much of the story is
told in flashbacks, which can be difficult, but Gecco pulls it off well.
Beorn and Gandalf are somewhat minor characters, but their personalities are
laid out well, and as for Gimli himselfılet me just say that I love this
version of him. Gecco pays homage to my favorite dwarf and does him justice,
and for that I offer up an endless stream of thanks. Gecco takes into
account situations, Gimliıs relative youth, and when the Battle of Fire
Armies starts up, we dive into Tolkienıs work seamlessly. Beautiful
blending, great characterization, and a wonderful ability to deal with
feelings and the fiery emotions of the dwarves.

>>THA4: Marta

Marta does something in her fic that I wish with all my heart I could do.
Marta adopts Gollumıs voice. Both voices, actually, because thereıs a
difference between the voice of Gollum and the voice of Smıagol. Itıs
subtle, to be sure, but itıs there, and Iım sitting here in awe trying to
figure out how it was done. I think Smıagolıs sentences are simpler and
shorter. Almost as though heıs a child coming from a more innocent time.
Maybe Iım reading too much into this, but however Marta did it, the result
is fantastic. Gollum is Gollum, Smıagol is Smıagol, and Marta gives us a
terrific glimpse into his mind as he recalls teaching his grandmother to
suck eggs. Good stuff!

>>THA6: TreeHugger

TreeHugger can write serious fics. I know because Iıve read some of them.
The fic here is not serious in the least, and what I love about it is the
sheer contrast in styles that TreeHugger uses. Earlier fics were more solemn
and dramatic, and the narrative reflected that. But with ıIn the Hall of the
Wood Elf King,ı TreeHugger shows us that sheıs just as capable of writing
hilarious dialogue, narrative, and situations. This story actually reminds
me a bit of some Shakespearean comedies in which nothing seems to go right
no matter how hard people try to make it work, and everything is taken as
far as it can go and then some. It requires a brave author to take so many
liberties with the characters, and it requires a talented author to make it
work. TreeHugger is both.

TH3: Estel and the Hobbit by Eledhwen

I enjoyed this story. Estel was a sweet child and I liked the interchange with Bilbo. I really liked the epilogue tooı to see him all grown up and Bilbo pretty much the same.

TH7: The Emblem You Chose by Wild Iris

A thoughtful little tale and a good gap filler.

A nice little story of how Estel and Bilbo might have met and interacted, I liked young Estel's enthusiasm, and the serious way he taught Bilbo things that might help him on his adventure. A good beginning to their friendship.

Another Estel and Bilbo story, this one does not show quite so much of the interaction between the two, but does show some of the interaction between Elrond and Gandalf as they, in their seperate ways, "meddle" in the llives of others. I very much liked the Epilogue, as it showed Bilbo writing the verse that was much like a prophecy, and which figured so much in later events.

TH1: Another Mother's Son by Thevina

That was a beautiful story of adoption, however formal or informal, and
what makes a family. Set in the destruction of Lake Town, we glimpse
something in this story that went mostly unnoticed, as Laketown was not the
focal point of The Hobbit. People were lost, children orphaned. And good
people who survived would adopt those children, rich or poor. As someone
who hopes to adopt someday, I love this story.

TH2: Chance Meeting at Rivendell by Aunt Dora Baggins

Another story of Aragorn and Bilbo meeting and I really liked this one.
Maybe because it mentioned Legolas. ;-) Really, it was well-written.

TH3: Estel and the Hobbit by Eledhwen

A nice little story of what might have been, and it does make logical sense
they Aragorn and Bilbo might have met then, and it would explain their
friendship.

TH4: In the Hall of the Wood Elf King by TreeHugger

This story is hilarious! And it makes the Egla Ash series all the much more
poignant as two of our favorites from here are reported dead. I won't spoil
their names though. They live on in these young Legolas stories. I love
these original characters, Legolas's friends and Tanglinna, and the
characterization of Thranduil is such a refresher from the usual spate of
Abusive!Thanduil's out there. And what a fun way to weave Legolas into The
Hobbit (even if we assume he's much younger than we though) story! Each
chapter just got funnier and funnier, from Legolas being forced to wear pink
to him being mistaken for a princess and then getting smashed on pipeweed
until he practically confirmed that he was a princess for Gloin! TreeHugger
just kept making it funnier and funnier, so it might be a good thing I read
it as a WIP or I might have hurt myself laughing for too long in one
sitting.

TH6: Sucking Eggses by Marta

That sounded just like Gollum, especially the many inserts of "Precious",
ana it fits nicely into the riddle contest in The Hobbit story.

TH7: The Emblem You Chose by Wild Iris

Touching story of the tribute paid by Thranduil to someone who was once his
prisoner and once an enemy and once an ally. Very describtive and detailed,
well-written and beautiful. Wild Iris pays Thranduil a tribute with her
story. This is not the brute too many fans think he is. No, this is as
Tolkien wrote him. Wild Iris just gave us another scene.

AUTHORS (remember to comment on the writer as regards to the category, not
the story, here):

THA4: Marta

Marta handled Gollum's inner dialogue very well, and also his cunningness.

THA5: Thevina

Thevina put her heart into her story, I think, as evidenced by her author's
note at the end. And she did it beautifully.

THA6: TreeHugger

TreeHugger is a precious commodity! She's hilarious! And she makes such
wonderfully enduring original characters. No Sues here. Just wonderful
depth and personalities so that they really feel alive. And she can make a
reader laugh and laugh and laugh. I'm still jealous of those who can write
humor and TreeHugger certainly fits into that category! She's brilliant.

THA7: Wild Iris

Wild Iris did a great job with her characterization of Thranduil. I think
she got him right on the mark. And it was a lovely story she wrote for him
paying tribute to Thorin.
