The Lord of the Rings
The Lord of the Rings

Nice piece. The changing POVs were slightly offputting, but besides
that the story was well done.

This was incredibly well-written. Erotic and sensuous at those parts,
but also heart-rending sadness. Arwen's grief pervades the piece (as
does the grief of Legolas, Elrond, and Aragorn), and that grief was
not glossed over, for which I am very glad. Having Arwen call Aragorn
"Estel" (hope) was a nice touch, though I did wonder whether she
would, given that she had not met him until he was grown. Regardless,
the symbolism was nice. Well-done.

An interesting story. I think that, with Sam's love for the Elves, he
would get some measure of comfort from their presence. He had to get
solace from somewhere and, hobbits being hobbits, they probably
wouldn't understand the "big" events beyond the Scourging like Elves
and Men might. For Sam to last as long as he did, with the taint of
the Ring on his soul, support like this would have been very helpful.
I also liked how you looked at the differences between Elves and
Hobbits. There are certainly differences (for example, Rosie's
treatment of Celeborn and Celeborn's comment that, if a spouse was
late, the other would wait), but you also played up the similarities.
Also, well done on finding so many parallels between the two couples.

Wonderful! This poem/filk had the high feeling of a Victorian carol,
yet it was still hilarious. I have to admit to laughing out loud at
the description of Legolas as a "smug git". And very well done on the
rhyme of Boromir/palantir/Faramir - that especially worked
particularly well.

Too often in fanfic Pippin is treated like a child, but not here. It
was refreshing to read this story where others recognize Pippin's
worth, even if he himself doubts it just at the moment (and who
wouldn't, after a direct confrontation with Sauron?). This event fits
well with canon and provides a possible positive memory Pippin could
draw on in the days to come. Also, well done on the characterization
of Legolas. I can very easily see him acting this way. You sure packed
a lot into this short piece, and it all works well.

Brilliant story. Recently I spent two days combing through half a
dozen computer science texts looking for a very specific piece of
code, and so I can sympathize with Gandalf and Parmandil in their
search - I can't imagine what it would be like, before indices and
knowledge being freely available! But this story definitely captures
the feel of an archive. I almost could taste the dust in the cathedral
archives where I've done genealogy research in Germany.
Beyond that, it was a thought-provoking story, and a well-told
gapfiller. And interlacing the archive scenes with those during the
Ring War gave the events of both times more poignancy and meaning.

Besides being a very nice friendship tale, I really liked how this
offered an explanation for why movie!Gimli is such a clown. Thanks for
the nice story.

Oh, simply beautiful! I especially liked the line "How can enmities or
grievances remain, where beauty has been shared?" It was nice to see a
Legolas and Gimli friendship piece that was so rich, and that stayed
in character - but most of all, it was wonderful to see it from
Gimli's perspective! So many of these friendship pieces come from
Legolas's perspective. (Never could guess why ... ;-) ) And this is
certainly Gimli's voice.
But my favourite part of all was probably the descriptions of the
caverns. Beautiful! If I could write like that, I might just be able
to do my own Aglarond plot-bunny justice.

Bilbo must have forged. Very amusing incident, as well!

Re: LotR Ballot - Marta has her say (revised) Posted by Marta October 30, 2004 - 8:16:25 Topic ID# 2548Vote counters, I'm really sorry. I saw this morning that I had messed
up my LotR ballot last night. I had copied-and-pasted the ballot, then
decided I would help you out by putting in character counts as I had
saw someone else do. Long story short, I think I forgot to delete the
first copy-and-paste I did, so it might be pretty confusing what
exactly I was trying to say.
To clear up any confusion, here's my ballot. Hope this is clearer.

This is a lovely tale - it really shows the unique bond Aragorn and
Bilbo must have forged. Very amusing incident, as well!

would help you out by putting in character counts as I had saw someone else
do. Long story short, I think I forgot to delete the first copy-and-paste I
did, so it might be pretty confusing what exactly I was trying to say.
I hadn't noticed anyone else putting in character counts, but then it might
be a category I'm not counting and just skimmed over. Anyway, there's no
need to put in character counts. We won't rely on your character counts for
our counting purposes. Each comment is counted by three people to assure
accuraces. And it appears that you may have counted spaces anyway, which we
do not.
So, which ballot should be we counting?
