First Age
S1-2: As Little Might Be Thought by Deborah Judge
The first Silm story I ever read, and I have never forgotten it! I
love how Maglor the dread Kinslayer slowly wins the love of the
terrified little boys. It's a great pity Deborah is not writing more
than she has for the last year or so.
First Age
S1-4: Dark Forge by Ithilwen
This magnificent story, and the rest in Ithilwen's series on The
Mole are what started my Maeglin fixation. This elf was not evil,
but misunderstood, and he had a difficult childhood. Yeah, right
Maeglin. But we love you just the same!
First Age
S1-13: White Wing by Cirdan
A sweet little piece, where Cirdan proves not only elves have
foresight.
Incomplete
SI-1: A Veiled Light by Andreth
What can I say? Having been `in' so to speak on much of the agony
this author has been through with this story, and seen it evolve
into a saga of sweeping granduor to rival Tolkien himself I can't
speak too highly. From poor Ilmare, battling the shortcomings and
strangness of her mortal body, to the beautiful word portraits of
Cirdan, Elrond and Gil-Galad as descended from Finarfine, this story
has everything, including the author's wicked sense of humour!
Romance
SR2: Fell Fire by Finch
I like to think Tolkien himself would approve of this sad fic. I
really really what to shake Aegnor and ask him `what were you
thinking!' I guess he thought Andreth would forget him, but she
didn't. Poor elf, he faced as much sorrow and regret at the end for
not marrying her as he would have if he had just without the happy
years in between. Finrod doesn't come off as blameless, yet he is
secure in the belief he acted (or didn't) for everyone's good. A
good elf who maybe meddled where he oughtn't to have, but I wonder
how much this story later influenced his going above and beyond his
oath to Barahir when Beren enlisted his aid. My very favourite Silm
story.
Romance
SR4: Taming the Wildflower by Sulriel
Nice to have Maedhros in a romance where Fingon is not the love
interest. The tension between Maedhros and his brothers over
Rhavloth is so Feanorian!
The ruin of Doriath is tragic, but the best part is the lovely
ending when Rhavloth waits with Feanor for Maedhros, and they
finally marry at last.
Romance
SR6: The Unforgettable Fire by Ithilwen
Well done for this lovely story Ithilwen. I do believe it's one of
your best. Caranthir the nasty tempered falls for the middle aged
Haleth. A tale of beauty and tragedy that the reader can feel
Caranthir's sorrow with him when he experiences the sadness of the
first elf/mortal marriage and how torn he is when he remarries to
carry on the family line, in vain, however.
Personally I think Morgoth ought to have been very glad Haleth was
too old to present Caranthir with a brood of kids, they'd have taken
Angband all by themselves!
