Elves Amnesty Ballot from Elena Tiriel Posted by Elena Tiriel October 31, 2004 - 21:49:02 Topic ID# 2608

Official Voting Ballot

E2: A Leaf on a Stream by Marnie

This story really opened my eyes to how biased is the the Elven history we
see in the Silmarillion - how Noldor-oriented it is. I had never really
understood that the Sindar had really been fighting the Dark long before the
Noldor even returned to Middle-earth. I loved your characters here -- well,
I've always loved your Celeborn, but the twins are interesting and distinct
in this story (impudent young rogues! -- loved their comments about
Galadriel's answers for questions they pose). I was delighted that Celeborn
taught the twins how to travel through the trees -- an obvious oversight in
their prior education (silly Noldor)! The twins' disgust at the love
between Elu and Melian is so like a child, as is Celeborn's revelation that
he would not ever go "home" if that meant leaving his grandchildren. Such a
satisfying story, Marnie!

E4: Across Dark Waters by Zimraphel

What deliciously creepy just deserts! To think that Maeglin would
eventually replace Fıanor as the most deserving of the punishment of
watching his multitudes of victims! And to think that Fıanor finally began
to show some remorse -- which, obviously, Maeglin is nowhere near having
yet. "when I hear now the word kinslayer I shall hear a name other than my
own." -- what divine justice and amazing irony at the same time!

E5: Battle of the Golden Wood by Marnie
URL: http://www.storiesofarda.com/chapterlistview.asp?SID=358

This was a riveting story from beginning to end. I was so taken by not only
the strong personalities -- boy, I would not want to cross Celeborn when
he's in magnificent warrior mode; fell and full of fury indeed! -- but also
the more tender moments between Celeborn and Galadriel. The fact that she
was so spent at the end saddens me greatly. Also, I was so horrified by the
forces of darkness: the huge projectiles were frightening, poisoning the
waters is simply beyond comprehension, and the captive with eyes sewn open
was a horrific image that creeps me out to no end (and "creeps" is not
nearly a strong enough word...). Oh, and the effect of the ring on Oswy,
turning a decent person into doing unspeakable things, was an eye-opener, to
say the least...

E7: Dissection of the Common WoodElf, Telerius Galadh by bryn_bnw

This story is just -- evil. Pure evil. You know how it is when you see a
comedian take a pratfall and you have to laugh, knowing that pratfalls are a
low sense of humor that you don't wish to succumb to? Well, this story is
like that. I don't want to laugh, but can't help myself. I laughed at the
standard M. S. capture tactic (carefully selecting the most appropriate
type), "skilled in the art of archery and swearing", and many other parts.
The bioluminescence and associated conjecture on the descent of Elves is,
um, most unique! I most enjoyed the dig at Tolkien's incomplete family
trees, leading to speculation about asexual reproduction or hermaphroditism!
This is such a funny, sly story; I really enjoy it!

E10: Gofi and the Balrog by Levade

Ah, Levade, this is such a delightful elfling story! I love how carefully
and gently Glorfindel deals with the sons of Elrond, yet he doesn't spoil
them. He is very sensitive to their quiet mood (these aren't very frequent,
are they?), and draws them out very adeptly. You have very nicely captured
how very young children act in a loving environment. The detail of
Glorfindel catching on to the (near) thumb-sucking and realizing that they
must be frightened is very telling, as is Elladan's assertion that he would
have protected Glorfindel from the Balrog. The interplay between an amused
Elrond and proud warrior Glorfindel was great! I particularly loved the
ending, with Glorfy penning the picture of Thorondor to give to the twins.
What a lovely, and loving, touch!

E14: Notes From the Field by bryn_bnw

Okay, this is just too funny for words. I do a lot of laughing while
reading this story because it appeals to both my scientific bent and my
funny bone... a LOT. It's hard to even pick out the funniest bitsı I
loved the Elves trying to entice the researchers with food, and the
researchers very professionally recording every contact. Their surprise at
finding a female - snicker! Zippers. Band-aids. Do you know, I can't even
look at either object in Real Life any more without remembering this story
(which I read when you first posted it) and giggling? I also love your Mary
Sue taxonomy and life-span comments. Um, giants spiders, orcs, and vampire
bats do seem to be an occupational hazard of working in the Mirkwood
habitat. (Poor J. Z.) The glowing eyes and bulbous eyes of The Hobbit were
a particular disfavorite of mine. Ah, well, so Dwarves and Elves don't get
along well? What a surprise! Anyway, this is probably my favorite humor
story of all time. Very, very funny story, Bryn!
