Fwd: [Henneth\_Annun] {MEFA} Reminder - Nomination season approaching Posted by Marta Layton March 28, 2005 - 16:30:39 Topic ID# 3548
Hi Ainae,

This was just posted to HA. My guess is that they have to be finished
by the end of nomination season, or else they won't be eligible as a
finished story, but I wanted to check before I answered the question.

Stories posted on March 31 are fine. Basically if the archive you post
to has a date of when the story was originally created, that date has
to be March 31, 2005 or earlier. (If the date is when you last
modified the story, that can be later. For example, if you nominate a
WIP and the author adds a chapter in May, the story is still
eligible.)

Is that clear?

Marta

What about stories that were nominated as WIPS last year? Do they have to
have their last chapter in by the 31st? Or before the reading starts?

Someone with a better meory, help me here. I think that any WIP that was
nominated by the end of Nomination Season but finished anytime up to Voting
Season, we moved it to a category for completed stories.

Is that right?

Yes, that's the way it worked last year. But it can't be *nominated*
twice as a WIP, according to the rules.

My suggestion is that any WIP nominated last year must be completed by
the last day of nomination season to be eligible as a completed story
this year. I think it's asking too much of us to go back at the end of
readig season and check and make sure all those WIPs actually became
completed.

Well, I've already answered on HA saying it could be to Voting Season. What
are our members thoughts on this? I agree that it would be a lot of work to
check each WIP, and I don't intend to. Last year, someone (usually the
author) notified us. I assume that would be the way we'd do it this year,
if we let them be finished up to Voting Season.

Thanks. I haven't received that post yet, but I'm sure that's just
Yahoo being tricksy.

What happens if an author doesn't let us know that a WIP has been
finished? (Whether it has been and the author just forgets, or they
don't get around to finishing it in time) Do we let them run twice as
WIPs?

I was spending a couple of hours catching up with HA anyway. Some nice
drabbles went up.

Nothing EVER runs twice as a WIP. It can run once as a WIP and once as
complete. If the authro doesn't let us know, sometimes a reader does. If
no one does, then it's doubtful that anyone read the last chapter to know
it's complete, so they all comment on it as incomplete. Thus it should stay
in the Incomplete categories.

The problem with putting the deadline on it is that, say a story is finished
the first week of Voting Season. But I am still reading. I go to that
story and read it and find out that whoa the last chapter is there. I'd be
in a place to comment on the complete story. If it stays in Incomplete
(because it wasn't finished before the deadline), it has an advantage over
the other stories in that category. I'm likely going to give it a better
review because I have the whole story, the beginning , the middle, and the
end.

That's why we moved the stories, I think. They are then complete and can
compete with that category of stories. If the group is notified, anyone who
read that story as incomplete can choose to read the last chapters and
revise their vote (provided it wasn't posted yet. We may want to decide
what to do in that case.)

Hi Ainae,

Let's say a story was nominated last year as a WIP. That means this
year it's not eligible as a WIP, but it is eligible as a completed
story, right?

As I see it there are three options:

1. This story must be completed when it's nominated.

2. This story must be completed by the last day it's possible to
nominate it - i.e., April 31.

3. This story must be completed by the last day which it can be moved
from incomplete to complete (I'm assuming this is the last day of
reading season).

My impulse is to go with (2), but I can see merits of all of these options.

If it was nominated last year as a WIP, the only way it can ever compete
again is as a completed story, with the same rules as any completed story,
which means it has to be finished by the start of Nomination Season.

The confusing thing is that a WIP could be finished any time during
reading season and could then compete as a complete piece. So you had
completed pieces that weren't finished until well after nominating
season began.

Just so I'm clear, what happens if an author posts a completed version
of the story before nominations open, but later posts a more polished
version? I know I've done that. It would mean that a story would be
first posted before nominations open, but its "last updated" date
would be after April 1.

Marta, I think you're making things more complicated than they need to be.
Znd this is not particularly something I wanted to discuss on the list. We
can only police things so far. We're not the internet fanfic cops. In many
ways we have to rely on members' integrity. Once we get the automated
system up and running, hopefully it will be a lot more secure, but as things
stand, we're just people with computers and an internet connection.

Just try and keep it simple. It must be finished before April 1st. I've had
stories I've gone back and fixed a typo (or 200 typos) for years after they
were finished. To me, that didn't change the "finished" date. Oswiecim was
finished in 1997 (though it wasn't posted until 1998). I went back and fixed
typos (several hundred first, then maybe a hundred, then maybe 25, etc.)
over the years. I had to repost it to ffnet a while back because it
mysteriously disappeared. It was still FINISHED in 1997.

If it was a WIP last year and is not finished this year by April 1st, it
must wait until next year.
