Okay... Now, I'm sorry if I've missed this in an
earlier post, but I'm still digging through the
remaining 200 of the 3000+ emails from this week!
Now, I'm nominating a story, but I honest to god
cannot think of a subcategory for it!!! SO can I
put *unknown* in the field so it will accept the
nomination, or have we come up with something
else?

You could probably put "none" in there--I don't think every story will
run with a subcategory. Or take a look at some of the other
nominations and see if anyone has come up with something you could
use, thereby expanding one subcategory across authors. Just
suggestions, since I've also had some trouble coming up with
subcategories for some stories.

I have been putting "n/a" there if I could not think of a good
category. Same thing as Dwim does, I think; I agree, not all stories
will have a subcategory.

Another question about subcategories: what if our piece spans multiple
ages? I know I nominated a vignette series by AfterEver that had
vignettes set in the First, Second, and Third Ages, and I wasn't sure
whether I should suggest "multi-age" as a subcategory, or should
suggest each of the above as a possible subcategory.

Well, in that case, it might not end up in either of those subcategories and
just go with another suggested one or stay in the main category.

The other thing you could do (or one of the things I'm doing) is use the categories themselves as subcategories. The story will only compete in one, after all, but maybe a subcategory could be formed off a related category.

For example, I nominated many stories that could be either Post-WotR, Men, or Drama. So I put some of those categories down as subcategories, too, because last year's Men category had a subcategory of Post-WotR. *shrugs* I don't know how that will work this year, but it's a thought.

I used "multi-age" on my nomination for Jocelyn's "Elven Song." But there aren't many stories/vignettes that span more than one Age, so it probably won't be a viable subcategory.

That's a good question, Marta. I have a drabble nominated that spans The
Hobbit for background, but the "punchline" is from the Lord of the Rings. I
put LoTR in the main category, and The Hobbit in the suggested
subcategories, but if anyone else has a suggestion, I would welcome it
(there were already two other more-applicable main categories, so I didn't
want to use both The Hobbit and LoTR as main categories).

I just stuck an asterisk (*) in there and it worked. I really don't quite get the subcategorie part, so that seemed safest for me.
