Author reviews and new members Posted by Ainaechoiriel April 10, 2005 - 22:45:06 Topic ID# 3807
Hi, I'm finally back online. I had a great weekend. Birthday for three
days! I was taken out to lunch by my supervisor on Thursday, had an informal
party here at home on Friday and was taken to a fancy dinner in formal-wear
on Saturday.

Anyway, admin stuff first, i found three new members since Thursday or
Friday. All of them are now elligible to nominate and vote, etc, because
I've set them up as MEFA members on the MEFA2005 site. Welcome aboard,
everyone!

And now to author comments:

Why do we have them? Because I borrowed the whole awards program from the
Alt.StarTrek.Creative Awards. We have always had author awards there as
long as I have been there. (And I've never won onw. Sniff.) Oddly, no one
seems to have any confusion with them over there.

Now on to the confusion. There was confusion last year and it was decided
that yes, author comments are harder to write than story comments. In fact,
they often seem to turn into story comments. Darn 'em. What they should be
is a review of the author, not the story. Ideally, they should be on how
well the author wrote for that category. For example, Dwim had a humor
story last year and a drama (I think--but this is just an example anyway).
For her Humor Author nomination, I'd write about her ability to write humor.
For her Drama Author nomination, I'd write how talented she was at writing
drama.

But then, Dwim was nominated in several other categories as well, and that
comment about Drama could also work for most of what I had to say about her
ability to write in the Elves or Men categories.....

So we have allowed for copying a comment for author comments only. (You
can't copy a comment for story reviews!) . Do vary them, if you feel you
can.

Hope that helps.

Hi Ainae,

I think this is partly what was confusing me...I looked at some of
the 2004 author and story comments and couldn't tell the difference!

Between Marta's and your explanations, I think I get it now.

Thanks...and many happy returns!

Kathy
