A "true drabble" is exactly 100 words. Any more than this and it's a
vignette -- even if it's written to a specific word length besides 100,
such as 50, 200, 300, 111, or so on. (I know at HASA we have had
"drabble challenges" to write to 111 words, and many people accept
200-word drabbles as drabbles in the birthday forum.) But for the
purpose of the MEFAs, a "true drabble" is exactly 100 words. A true
drabble or a series of true drabbles (i.e., more than one 100-word
stories, each of which stand alone but are bound by some common theme)
are the only things that should be in the drabble subcategories. The
rest are really vignettes.
So Anthony added two options to the "story length" field -- "true
drabble" (the 100-word pieces or series of multiple 100-word pieces)
and "ficlet" (a 111-word, 200-word, 300-word, etc.) piece. Drabbles
nominated before this change would have had "n/a" for the story length.
They're the ones just labelled as drabbles. The ones nominated after
this should have "true drabble" or "ficlet" as the stroy length.
Hope that clarifies!

Re: What is the difference between drabble types? Posted by Anthony Holder April 13, 2005 - 9:19:35 Topic ID# 3869Barbara and Marta,
I know that many of the story nominations are 'complete,' but if an
author finds that his/her story is now classified incorrectly (e.g.,
it was a 200-word birthday drabble, and should be listed as Vignette:
Ficlet), they should contact their Liaison with the information. The
Liaisons can go in and fix it. It won't change what's already been
posted today, but it will help when it comes time to sort all these
stories into their correct categories.
So: All Authors (and nominators, I guess, if the author isn't a MEFA
member, and reading this note), please check your drabbles.
Here are the suggested (categories: lengths).
(Drabble) with no length shown = True Drabble, 100 words. You don't
have to change these, but if you don't, the categorizers will probably
have to check them to be sure they are classified correctly, so it's
probably best to classify them now. It will also reduce confusion
later if they all are classified as either True Drabble or Drabble Series.
(Drabble: True Drabble) 100 words
(Drabble: Drabble Series) multiple standalone 100-word drabbles that
together tell a more complete story
(Vignette: Ficlet) other short, constrained-length vignette
If it's a random-length vignette, then it doesn't belong as ficlet, so
leave the length as N/A (unless it's long enough to warrant Short
Story length!).
(Story: Ficlet) would also be appropriate if the ficlet has more than
one scene.

Re: What is the difference between drabble types? Posted by Ainaechoiriel April 13, 2005 - 12:32:26 Topic ID# 3869Didn't realize that was still in there that way. Drabble and True Drabble
will reamin the same thing. True was added when we thought about expanding
to include 200-words stories and the like. Something I opposed. Then
someone suggested the term "ficlet" to house those 200, 300 worders (meant
to be limited by that exact number) and I wwnt with that. But I guess I
forgot to take out True. I'll work on that.
