possible addition of counted character? Posted by Marta Layton April 17, 2005 - 15:22:41 Topic ID# 3923
Hi guys,

I noticed on the MEFA2005 website's form to submit a vote it says the
following:

"Only the characters abcdefghijklmnopqrstuvwxyz0123456789.,;"\!?-()
count toward the review's score."

I might be wrong, but didn't we also count the asterisk (*) last year?
It certainly has a legitimate place in review comments, because it
marks out words you'd like to emphasise, for example:

"This piece truly is an example how *not* to write Tolkien slash"

or

"Finally! An author who understands that Frodo wasn't *only* trying to
save Middle-earth, he was trying to save the Shire as well."

I don't know if this was discussed and I forgot, but it seems like
they're a legitimate character. I mean, it's not like it's a string of
nonsense characters (i.e., ###############) meant just to bolster the
character count.

True, but it is something that would require more work for Anthony and
another announcement telling anyone with *s to reopen and save their
comments. Since it accounts for only 2-4 characters per comment, I'll not
worry about it. If Anthony wants to fix it, we'll let him.

Perhaps we should keep a list of little things
like this for next year. It's not really
something that needs to be discussed at length in
the post-mortem, but it might just get forgotten
in the midst of everything at the end of this
year!

That's a good idea - I use * to when I want to emphasise something. This year I will be happy to find and use an alternative, but it would be handy next year.

And I was noticing a couple of little category things when I was doing my nominations that I'll jot down for after the awards : )

There, peeping among the cloud-wrack above a dark tor high up in the mountains, Sam saw a white star twinkle for awhile. The beauty of it smote his heart, as he looked up out of the forsaken land, and hope returned to him. For like a shaft, clear and cold, the thought pierced him that in the end the Shadow was only a small and passing thing: there was light and high beauty for ever beyond its reach.
