Re: Books/Time: Lord of the Rings, Check Ballot #1 Posted by MarigoldCotton@aol.com June 07, 2005 - 15:56:02 Topic ID# 4519I also have a copy of the HarperCollins edition, and it says in "Note On The Text" that this is the "best possible" version and will be entered into computers to allow for "...greater uniformity of text in future editions." All of the references in this edition are "Middle-earth". I am wondering though if Rhapsody might have books that were translated into English from Dutch, as that is her native language? Maybe there is some reason having to do with the translating process that makes it different in her books?

Are you saying the publishers have been perpetrating a massive

(Umm I just asked an American friend who has Houghton-Mifflin copies,
and hers says Middle-earth too. This is clearly just one of life's

link to the next? .... I just went and looked and no, it doesn't. That is
not good. Next year when something like this happens, the Liaison should
have asked the author to post her story somewhere else or at least add links
to go from chapter 1 on. It's this sort of thing that last year made me say
Tolkien Online wasn't ellible this year.

about changing every little typo. That would take a lot of time! But I
am a perfectionist, so I at least want to note it, and we did fix them
last year.
As I said before, disregard these little changes in my other ballots.
You don't even have to reply onlist saying you're disregarding them.

it. I do understand why the author wouldn't think to link to the last
three chapters from the first chapter -- if she was posting serially
they wouldn't have been written yet!
I have an idea for a solution to this kind of thing for next year, but
I'm not sure if it's technically feasible. In any event I'll save it
for the post mortem.

required to have two choices.
I thought someone said over at the staff list that this essay would
make hobbits/incomplete viable, but maybe I'm misremembering. In any
event, if Hobbit/Incomplete can't run, LOTR is as good as anything
else. It's not really about the events of LOTR, but so far it only
draws information from LOTR. Eventually I'll expand it to include The
Hobbit and the Letters, and maybe even the HOME drafts (hey, I can
dream right ;-P ) So I guess LOTR is as good as it can get.

This is actually one of my personal peeves. It's the research geek in
me, I can't help it, but every time I read "Middle Earth" I grit my
teeth. It would be funny if it was me who was wrong all along!

I didn't see the 'approve nomination' email until late in the game,
but I think it needs to be revamped with the most basic information
at the very top.
(for example:)
Your story has been nominated.
We need you to verify, correct the nomination and REPLY in order for
this story to run in the contest.

post-mortem. I won't remember it by then of course, so I make note of
my thoughts now.
While stylistic differences from entry to entry don't really matter as
long as the information is clear, I'll admit my professional
preference is for consistency. Now that I've got a little more
caffeine in me, I can see that achieving conformity to a standard
(always use N/A instead of n/a or NA, etc.) is only going to be
possible if it begins to be addressed at a much earlier stage than the
check-ballots. It would probably be the province of the author
liaisons as they take the nominations and bring them to the authors.
It all depends, of course, on how much of an irritant inconsistency is
to the folks who are working through the material.

Re: *save for post mortem* / Re: Books/Time: Lord of the Rings, Che Posted by aelfwina@cableone.net June 08, 2005 - 8:34:01 Topic ID# 4519I think a lot of the inconsistency is due to the nominators. In my case, when I nommed a fic, I usually simply cut-and-pasted the summary from whatever archive the fic was housed in. Since I am sure that I'm not the only one who did this, that was the result. And since different archives have different requirements in some cases for their summaries...
I think, like RSF, that many of the authors were so overwhelmed by the honor that they simply okayed the nominations without being as thorough in checking as they might otherwise have been.
This is definitely something that should be put in the reminder-thingie for post mortem discussion.

and more effective if nothing else! I don't find your meticulousness
(?) nuisancy in the least. But I can see where it wouldn't be very
efficient right now, especially given that the process is running a
little late. It's a good question to save for the post-mortem,
though.
And it's worth discussing. Some of the things you've pointed out are
errors or judgement calls which the authors, not all of whom have
English as a native language, might not catch. I've seen at least one
instance I know of. And other things could be easily brought in to
line by folks with a style guide to follow. Assuming that the
authors know best seems a bit tenuous to me.
Could, perhaps, the liaisons offer the authors a "corrected" version
of the nominations as well as the original nomination?
*puts question on shelf for later*

reluctant to offer suggestions. We probably need to make it more
obvious from the email that changing information really is allowed.
One thing that helped last year -- I contacted authors privately and
said I wanted to nominate their stories and ran the proposed categories
and such by them. That way the initial euphoria had kind of passed by
the time they heard from an author liaison, and they felt free to make
any changes without seeming ungrateful. (They will have to tell their
author liaison that they want to accept the nomination; I'm pretty sure
that next year we won't let nominators just forward on approvals from
their authors.

Re: *save for post mortem* / Re: Books/Time: Lord of the Rings, Che Posted by Ainaechoiriel June 09, 2005 - 1:18:21 Topic ID# 4519Which is why I don't care about those little quibbles. Yes, nominations
likely just copied and pasted what the author had typed up on the archive.
The authors were given a chance to approve all details. If they said they
did, we take them at their word. Even if they actually didn't. So their
summaries go in as they are (with a few minor exceptions like moving the
subcat suggestions out).

person/people who do care about consistency are the ones who have the
responsibility to do the editing (in future) it will very quickly
become obvious how important or unimportant the matter is.
If you have any questions about the archive, or would like to report a technical problem, please contact Aranel (former MEFA Tech Support and current Keeper of the Archive) at araneltook@mefawards.org or at the MEFA Archive group..
