Endurance Reviewing: the new Olympic sport Posted by dwimmer\_laik June 17, 2005 - 22:46:23 Topic ID# 4889
Kidding! But I've been working my way through the "Post-Ring War"
category--figured I'd do a gross of stories in honor of Bilbo--and my,
but it's a tiring task. I'll be lucky if I get through one category a
week at this rate!

But I'm sure my fingers will be ever so much the stronger for the
workout... ;-)

A general thanks to everyone for the lovely fics. *cracks knuckles* A
mere one thousand or so more to read and review...

Cheers for you, Dwim! You're a brave soul.

I'm trying to do as many as I possibly can, but sometimes the
eyestrain gets to me. And I second that "thanks" to everyone for all
the great stories.

I for one am saving drabbles and poems until the last minute, because I
know I can churn out reviews on those quickly. There are just so many
to do! I don't know how I will ever get through them all.

Do you have any clue how many you've reviewed so far? I know I've done
approximately thirty, and would like to know how I compare to other
mammoth reviewers.

I find I need them to break up the longer fics and move me towards the
bottom of the page.

I'm at roughly 120 reviews, between my own nominations and "Post-Ring
War". I still have two more pages of "Post-Ring War" to get through
the whole category, and a few longer fics I set aside to do later.

I figure if I get the really big categories out of the way early, the
rest will look much less intimidating!

Me, too! Especially as late at night as I tend to do reviews.

At last count, I was just over 100, but I cheated and did two poetry subcategories. Drabbles I'm holding off on until the end, though, because like you said, they tend to go faster than the other categories.

Not a mammoth here, I know I can't do them all, or even most, but I've
done about 50 so far, I (of course) reviewed the ones I nominated, and
I'm trying to get several out of each sub-category.

I have to say again how much I love the website and the database, it
sure makes it easy.

Hmm, my thirty is looking rather pitiful at the moment! To my credit my
memory is so bad lately that if I read the story more than a month ago
and didn't review it or have some other way to jog my memory I really
need to read it again to do it any kind of justice. Or at least scan
it! So I don't think I'll be able to review as many as I did last year.

At the moment I am re-reading Thundera's "While the Ring Travelled
South" (I'm sure I'm misremembering the title), and it's a fabulously
enjoyable re-read! I am definitely going to enjoy re-visiting some old
friends, even if I don't get to everything I'd like to.

> I (of course) reviewed the ones I nominated,

See, therein lies the problem! I can remember reading and really liking
a piece, without remembering enough to write a worthwhile review. But I
shall do my best.

Interesting. It seems that everyone has their own practice. I've talked
to people (some off-list, some here) who say they want to use the MEFAs
to expand the authors they read in areas they wouldn't normally read
(maybe elf-fanciers read about Fourth Age Gondor or vice versa); others
say they're using it to really find some gems in their corner of the
fandom. Some are focusing on certain categories, some are trying to get
a few for each. Some are reading authors they know they will enjoy,
some are purposefully seeking out new authors. It all fascinates me.

Oh yes, very nice.

Absolutely! I'm no where near mammoth either, but the site makes the
ones I have gotten done really easy. Thank you, guys!

Well, I've done better than I thought I had: 142 reviews. I'm trying to review the categories that appeal to me most first. But it's really going to be hard to review all the stories I want to.

I am near 70 I think, and a good many of those were from one marathon session one day last week, done while I was trying to take my mind off whether I would get a job that I had interviewed for.

I am doing them by category, and my hope is to do at least 5 reviews a day, though I haven't been able to keep to that plan so far...

I am finding some great stories though, some of them familiar favourites, but some I have never before read! We have some awesome stories here, thank you authors and nominators!

There, peeping among the cloud-wrack above a dark tor high up in the mountains, Sam saw a white star twinkle for a while. The beauty of it smote his heart, as he looked up out of the forsaken land, and hope returned to him. For like a shaft, clear and cold, the thought pierced him that in the end the Shadow was only a small and passing thing: there was light and high beauty forever beyond its reach.
