I liked this - pointed descriptions and strong voice made immersion was
immediate. Other aspects were, unfortunately, more vague: I wasn't sure if
the narrator with his war-like imagery was Faramir or Eomer, and what
'battle' exactly they were preparing for. The piece seemed both melancholy
and hopeful but wasn't sure which was foremost.

Excellent. Even the brevity of the form communicates how little power of
abstract thought Aragorn has left in this journey; he's become just Gollum's
capture with limited articulated feelings. You really capture the whole
experience - every sense and impression.

Excellent job. With so few words you still captured and communicated
Beregond's doubt, hope, guilt, and relief, and so much of Bergil's simple
self-centered boyhood thoughts - what am I going to do here? What's in it
for me?

How do I praise this lovely piece? First off, I guess I could say, it's
real. Inkling presents a Shire that has as much depth, magic, goodness and
reality as the Professor's own. You really feel like she is describing a
real place that you could visit or live in. Her characters have depth and
you can tell she worked on the presentation of each and every one. They
almost walk off the page. The story line is both entertaining and compelling
and I challenge you to be able to put it down once you have started. All in
all, this is one of those stories that really brings the Shire to life in a
way that makes me want to live there. Thank you, Inkling!

This story had a nice feel to it. I can imagine Faramir and Aragorn having
just this kind of conversation, and it was nice to see them at least begin
politically. I had some quibbles, and in a way the pledging seemed redundant
(it didn't accpmplish anything more than Faramir accepting Aragorn's
kingship when he first woke up in the books, as Aragorn is not crowned king
yet), but the character interaction was nice nonetheless.

I found this reading of Maedhros to be compelling. He's so single minded.
And I like the view of everyone else that we get through his eyes. He's
appalling but we can also see why he's the way he is, for the author lets us
see that more than his body was broken by the way he was treated. The author
manages to convey a great deal of feeling with relatively few words.

This story was beautiful and terrifying. For me, it had the same feel as a
Greek tragedy. The people of Athens knew the stories before they went to the
theater. They knew what was going to happen to Oedipus but they watched it
unfold in pity and fear. That's what I feel for poor Celebrian. And how
awful for Elrond to think that it was his stewardship of Vilya that exposed
Celebrian to the forces of evil.

The agony of everyone involved is described so well through the detail and
the dialogue. You make us feel it for ourselves. I am particularly struck by
how Celebrian comes across as a strong person, despite what's been done to
her. And her love for Elrond comes through so clearly too.

Elrond's temptation was deeply realized. How awful to have fought this
battle so many times, to think you've won, and to see if come again.

This was a tense and moving story.

One scene I liked was the one of the council. It seems to me that everything
in that scene swirls around Thranduil. Remove him, and you have a group of
grieving, angry people, who nonetheless have good will toward one another
and can be reasoned with. But Thranduil is off the deep end. He never did
like some of the people here to start with. And Legolas's thoughts about him
are sadly accepting: this is just the way the king is and his son loves him
anyway.

Then later, after they capture Disaran, all of these people--who we
basically see as decent--feel grief and their reactions vary so. Some of
them, like the hobbits, comfort one another. Other want to hurt one another.
And in the extreme case of the crowd, threaten to descend into madness. But
even the guards who beat on Disaran share a bit of that particular feeling.

The ending ties up all the threads wonderfully. Legolas learns what happened
to each of his friends and how much he is loved. And they confront their
actions and try to come to terms with them. Even Disaran gets what's coming
to him.

But my favorite part was when Gimli lectures Legolas about what to do about
the sea longing. I have to tell you there were actually tears in my eyes
when Legolas realized that Gimli, the elf friend, will be allowed to go with
him so that the wishes his heart and his blood are both answered.

And the ending was lovely. I particularly liked Legolas's vision of Frodo as
young and innocent. Frodo's loss of the ability to live in peace in the
Shire again has always struck me as so tragic. He and Legolas have that in
common -- the loss of contentment in what formerly gave them deep joy.

First, let me just say I was so deeply relieved that Erestor's children
survived that I can hardly tell you about it. I had to stop myself from
scrolling down to see. You built that tension very well.

Second, do you know Shelley's poem "Ozymandias"? It's about a statue that's
all broken and half buried in the sand and inscribed with the king's name
and a warning about how eternally powerful and wonderful he was. This
reminded me of that. And yet, I wonder if Erestor isn't also teaching a bit
of timidity. It's hard to balance all that, I think.

You do a wonderful job with the first person POV. You give us Daeron's
personality by showing us his thought and words, and he certainly is a
handful!

The families are also nicely done. We can see the older brothers and
Daeron's naneth emerging nicely. Thranduil is his intimidating self. Daeron
and Legolas have courage if they cross him regularly.

Your use of first person helps to build suspense too. You really let us
experience what it felt like to be these kids, to see that something in
going on and not know what it is.

Legolas was very bad to put that spider on his poor cousin who had trusted
him and confided in him! I was originally thinking "boys!" but then the
whole family got in on the act. It's actually nice to see some hilarity in
the royal family. And why is it that Daeron is so afraid of spiders but can
pick up beetles?

And the Dwarves in the woods were great. They were so dwarven, scratching
their chins with their axes and so on, but boy did they give good advice.
Too bad the men didn't take it, but it might have been too late for them
anyway.

I liked the way that after the rescue Daeron and Legolas see their brothers
and Thranduil in a new light: as dangerous warriors. And the talk about what
it means to kill as a warrior was properly sobering. No careless glory here.

I cheered when I saw that this story was continuing. Daeron is certainly
learning some hard lessons, and I don't mean how to do laundry. I've
wondered about that bond to a parent too. Perhaps Daeron feels it but
doesn't know it because he's never been without it. Maybe it's like feeling
your heart beat. A spouse is different because the couple forms that bond,
and the same thing with the bond of the parent to the child. The parent
feels the difference when it starts. But the child has always had it.

Daeron's fear was touching, and he does seem to have made peace with his
brother, at least for a while. I like the way you show us the reactions of
the adults even when Daeron can't quite make them out.
