I think the last line sums up Legolas' relation to his mortal friends
nicely: "Grief is my burden; remembrance, my destiny". It goes well with
"Immortal" and feels suitably elvish to me. Nice!

Very poignant depiction of Galadriel, patiently waiting for one who will not
come, and of the ultimate uncertainty of the Elves: bound to Arda, whether
or not the last battle is won, they stand a very good chance of dying with
that world so far as they know. At the same time, they still have a duty to
choose to uphold what is good when that time comes, and hope beyond all
reason that after Armageddon, there is not simply nothingness in store for
them, that perhaps they will reunite with mortal friends and family and even
Elves whose bodies have faded utterly and who never came to Valinor. A
lovely tale of hope in the midst of loss and losing. Well done.

Usually we see Elves hanging about in historical time, meeting Dante or
maybe even Tolkien himself, commenting on the sheer waste of the Trojan war,
etc. The Ents have a similarly long view of matters, but it's nonetheless an
extremely differently-paced, differently-oriented view: although Elves think
on an incredibly long time-scale, as the title of this story indicates, from
the time of the Ring War to Greenpeace activism, it's all really just "the
other day" to the Ents, and even day and night aren't really remarked as
discrete intervales. The hastiness of human beings gets put into a very
treeish perspective that Tolkien doubtless would have appreciated and
recognized, as the two ents attempt to have a quiet chat with each other
about the world and are perpetually interrupted by the results of human
hastiness: wars, automobiles, bombs, tree-huggers, and part-time ecologists,
all of them with one common trait: they're so busy moving quickly, they
never learn to pay attention. It's a sad and ironic end for the Ents, but
one that isn't out of pace with the world of Men.

As usual, Maya imbues the rather formal tone of her writing with a very
pristine sort of color—there's a brightness to the way she writes, and it
seems she is building a nice little repertoire of stories focusing on
reunions that make use of a good-sized ensemble of characters. It was lovely
to see Nob carry much of the story for once, at least as an observer and (in
fine Shire tradition, it seems) a certain amount of eavesdropping. One
always suspected, from the glimpse of the Butterbur-Nob relationship that
Nob couldn't be nearly as slow as Butterbur made him out to be. The story
ends as Maya's stories seem to do often, by sliding into the canonical text,
as it were, but with Maya's own twist on them. I particularly appreciated
Rose's view on Arwen's and Elanor's most memorable attribute (their
beauty)—it adds that needed earthbound touch, so to speak, to keep our
legendary figures from floating straight away into hyperbole. A lovely,
cheerful story about nothing in particular, save friendship—and what, after
all, could be better than that? Well done, Maya!

This is a tough space to write in, I think. Giving back the Gift in so late
an age involves so many more people than just Aragorn. But I like the idea
that it's not world-weariness, but a certain necessary restlessness of
spirit, that desires to know the world—and death is that last threshold, the
final lesson, and one that need not be fearful if properly approached.

Another lovely story about Aragorn's return to Bree as King of the newly
resurrected Arnor. Eledhwen caught Butterbur's voice well, I thought—a bit
rambly, but fundamentally cheerful, and not without a certain eye for the
irony of having, on past occasions, put Strider the Ranger up in the stables
rather than an actual room. That Butterbur doesn't even know where Arnor is
just makes the story better—why should he? And I found the unnamed Ranger
who ended up as Aragorn's and Arwen's dinner companion a most delightful
'prop'. An enjoyable sketch.

A well-crafted modern day ghost story that brings Tolkien's Elves into
historical time just long enough to make a rather Biblical exit from it, and
leave behind an extremely grateful marine. Once again, Marnie gives the sea
its due—it is no tame puddle of water in her hands; one can believe Osse is
rumbling about out there, as deadly in his strength as ever. Very aptly does
John have recourse to the kind of raw power and beauty of Biblical
archangels, who are terrifying in their splendor and whose first words to
mortals is necessarily "Be not afraid". If that goes for a couple of
houseless (or nearly houseless) Elves, it goes doubly so for the ocean.
Celeborn in this fic hasn't much of a voice, but his tireless search for his
grandfather is very touching, and although he does, it seems, save John from
a watery grave, I think it's right that he is not overly interested in him.
His attention is given to other things, and a mere mortal is barely going to
register in the face of the fulfillment of his long search for Elmo and a
passage to Valinor. A wonderfully uplifting ghost story, Marnie! I quite
enjoyed it.

"Turning the Page" goes in with "The Last Grey Ship", both of which are
about facing the inevitable with grace. This time, we have not Aragorn's,
but Éomer's last days, and a very intimate glimpse of Éomer's state of mind,
which is as one might expect it: content with the life he has lived, with
still that particular Rohirric sparkle, ready for what awaits even though
still quite grounded in the worldly. Éomer's no ascetic at the end of his
life—he's spent too much time absorbing the shocks of life in all their
varieties to be hollowed out and drifting at the end. The obvious love and
intimate friendship his last letter demonstrates towards Aragorn is
revealing of a long, well-kept relationship, and there are some lovely,
humorous touches. I particularly laughed at the line: "My son tells me the
men once said that the honor of riding with their king was only matched by
the saddle-sores thus incurred, but of late I prefer a more sedate chair."
That sounds about right for Éomer!
ErinRua is another of those writers who puts the slightly formal style of
Tolkien to good use, and still manages to get a surprising liveliness out of
the language, which her readers will doubtless appreciate.

For so short a story, this is wonderfully evocative, as Legolas watches his
companions succumb to death or departure, one by one (or occasionally three
at a time). One gets that sense of events rounding off, of Tolkien's world
closing to us, even as Legolas finds himself less and less rooted in
Middle-earth as his mortal friends die and pass on to whatever fate awaits
them. Gimli brings a lovely symmetry to it all: he and Legolas will be the
last, and they, like Boromir who went first, will pass by the river and on
to the sea, in pursuit of the only treasure worth having: friendship.

Another well-written drabble from Forodwaith. She neatly finds the symmetry
between her and Sam, both of them condemned to find no rest or comfort in
Middle-earth so long as the ones they love leave it ahead of them. Arwen's
prescient vision, that in spite of her hope to see Frodo and Sam happy in
the Shire, she will not see the two of them together again, seems also to
foreshadow her separation from Sam, since Sam will take ship to Valinor,
whereas she will remain in Middle-earth.

at least when a very good writer puts five of them together with a common
theme. Dwim writes elegantly, sparely, and conveys such an emotional punch
with each piece. My hands-down favorite was Blood Ties because of the way it
captured the tension between danger and courage. I loved the glimpse into
life in late Numenor - please pardon the lack of diacritical marks in that
word - and I thought using "the Templers" was a great touch.

A lovely, hobbity vignette, and what a nice use of the flowers to bring out
the fundamental truth of LOTR: goodness survives, and is hard to root out. I
liked the humor at the end, that it should be the lobelia that survive
Saruman and his minions.

Arwen's
prescient vision, that in spite of her hope to see Frodo and Sam happy in
the Shire, she will not see the two of them together again, seems also to
foreshadow her separation from Sam, since Sam will take ship to Valinor,
whereas she will remain in Middle-earth.

pairing of Arwen and Bilbo, Arwen's quiet strength, the unspoken closeness
between Arwen and Elrond ... despite so few words you've created a rich
story of dramatic action and deep characterizations.

This is a wonderful characterization, hinting at a more human love but
remaining specifically true to Sulnur's nature. Excellent.

> · 2005-06-14 20:42:26 Score: 5It was this collection of short shorts that changed my mind about drabbles,
at least when a very good writer puts five of them together with a common
