A way of remembering the dead without being melancholy or needing recourse
to the sorts of monuments only the rich can afford—a healing gesture indeed,

I really liked this drabble for the implicit use it makes of Faramir's
claim, that he doesn't love warfare for its own sake. Neither, it appears,
does he love it for the bonds it forms among comrades, and that, to me,
speaks very highly of him while remaining true to the character Tolkien
created.

This vignette has a spooky quality to it. Spooky might be the wrong word.
Eery, I guess. Anyway, it's moving. Very, very moving; I was immersed in the
world of the Last Alliance completely, and I felt the despair. This probably
isn't the alternative universe I would have written but it was very
interesting nonetheless.

I really enjoyed this story. It is a topic that has always particularly
interested me, perhaps because I am particularly interested in cultural and
especially cross-cultural details. So Gilraen's adjustment to life in
Rivendell is a particularly fun read for me. And you have mastered something
that I wish more authors could: creating believable original characters,
without them overwhelming the story. They're definitely there and their
personalities have depth, but they read more like minor characters than
major ones. They are tantalizing.

I think my favourite scene, though, has to be young Estel sitting on
Elrond's throne (for lack of a better term) when he and Gilraen first arrive
in Imladris. That is so unbelievably cute! I can just imagining Estel's
smile. And later, near the end, when he asks Elrond if he needs cuddling...
*awwww*. I can see this pair developing a very close relationship all the
year, which would have of course made Aragorn's love for Arwen (which would
steal Aragorn's only daughter from him) all the more painful.

By the way- is their any basis for the alienating of the Angle from
Rivendell in the time of Aravor's son that you refer to throughout this
story? I am very interested, as I have never heard of it before.

Nicely told. I particularly liked Gilraen's disdain when she learned of
Elves' diminished sexual drives, and that Elrond really *didn't* desire her
as a mistress. Which of course we all knew anyway, but it was nice seeing
Gilraen discover it, and with it just how different life among the Elves
could be. I do love AfterEver's Gilraen! Probably better than any other I
have ever read, though maybe Gwynnyd's is a tie.

I think what I most enjoyed about these poems was the understatement of the
erotic, especially in Arathorn's sonnet. The imagery there seemed almost
courtly, ponly it was a little forward for such a model. So much romance and
especially erotica in the Lord of the Rings fandom lacks that subtle, almost
ambiguous, quality that makes it feel so much more historical. This is one
of the reasons why I love reading your work so much. Especially with the
lead couples of the Angle (Gilraen and Arathorn, Arwen and Aragorn) you have
a real knack for capturing the tension between duty and pleasure. I can see
the spirit of Aragorn's comment to Bilbo (I think) in the Hall of Fire that
often has he had to put pleasure aside.

But the poem that really took my breath away was Gilraen's villanelle. The
form is what first did it for me. I have tried to write villanelles, but it
is the one form that I have never really been able to capture, so I bow in
homage to those who have mastered it. And here Alawa clearly has. I loved in
particular the way you worked in how different citizens of the Angle
(besides Gilraen and Arathorn, obviously!) might think that the age
difference between Gilraen and Arathorn was too great. Interplaying this
with the erotica that makes it OBVIOUS that Gilraen and Arathorn don't feel
the same way was pure genius.

How could they be improved? There were a few places where, to make it scan,
I had to delete a syllable of a word. Pow'r as opposed to power, that sort
of thing. It would have been easier on a first reading to have these
scanned-over syllables marked (like I did above with pow'r/power). But this
is really a minor criticism in otherwise brilliant love poems. The softer
side of my heart is still demanding more.

much (canonically) to touch on. But these waiting years are in many ways the
most interesting. Well done.

I was not aware of the folklore idea of dandelions being used to "tell time"
until Tanaqui wrote a writers' circle piece several months ago where she
also used the concept. Maybe it's a British, or at least non-American,
concept? It's an interesting one, and I think you used it to good effect
here. Your use of imagery was also strong, and you did a good job of
creating a plausible post-War of the Ring moment in so few words; none were
wasted.

When I think of Bilbo, I definitely imagine him in "The Hobbit", which for
me is a pretty light image. The pernacious hobbit who "good morning"ed
Gandalf the Grey, or who worried about whether Thorin and his dwarves would
eat all of his seed cake, leaving none for himself. I'm sure Bilbo had his
grumpier moments, but somehow, that's not the image I am left with. However,
the Bilbo in this short piece was a bit irritated and more than a little
gloomy. If I had to describe him in a phrase, it would be "cabin fever". You
captured this side of his personality very niceless, and you made me
believe. All in all a capturing read, if not exactly a fun one.

I generally imagine things from alternate perspectives, but this is one that
even I never imagined. And you made it very real, very three-dimensional. It
was spooky, which fit the narrator, but it was also touching, especially
there towards the end.

I was confused toward the end, though. In bookverse the Dead don't actually
sail up the Anduin. At least, I don't think it is. If it _is_ movieverse, it
works fine as such, but I would have preferred to have been warned upfront.

"And if anyone had mastered the “grim foreboding” expression, it was surely
Aragorn, Gimli thought" As soon as I read this line (maybe even before!) I
knew I was going to enjoy this piece, and I wasn't disappointed. Legolas and
Gimli were a perfect comic pair, and Gimli's raw comedy worked especially
well. Minor characters like Halbarad and the Sons of Elrond also worked very
well. And the image of Eowyn seducing Denethor, who is not only *so* not her
type but also half a century older... well, let's just say I started
chuckling early and didn't stop throughout. Of course we know what happens
canonically (which just makes gimli's last line all the more perfect), but
that doesn't mean this conversation didn't happen. I had never thought about
it before, but I'm sure it probably did at some point. Nice use of the humor
inherent in book-canon, which is so rarely done effectively.

In her story "A Proper Course of Action" I admired Aliana's Eowyn for her
spunk. She was perfect as a comic figure, and I really enjoyed her in that
role. But in the end comedy is not my favourite genre, and this story shows
that Aliana is more than capable of writing Eowyn in a more serious role. I
loved how Eowyn still had a hint of Dernhelm in her. I think there always
will be (and here I'm sure I reveal myself as more of an essentialist than
an existentialist) because I don't think those personality traits that
Tolkien labelled as Dernhelm were unique to that situation, and I don't
think they would disappear after she is "tamed" in the Houses of Healing
sequence with Faramir.

But even more than that I think you really, REALLY nailed Frodo's character.
The comparison with Merry was just too perfect, and exactly how I see those
two. The ring of course played a role, but I think some of that is inherent
in their characters. Merry is not only much younger than Frodo but he is
also a Brandybuck, which I think would make him more adventurous and less
serious. He could be responsible when he needed to but would prefer to let
others take the lead in that area.

Anyway, you captured all of this very well in a short space. The omniscient
style to the very beginning and end was not quite to my liking, but I
suppose that is probably my personal preference, and not any fault of the

I love pieces centring around original characters because they provide such
a novel glimpse into Middle-earth. There's only so much you can do with
canon characters, and OCs often provide a more blue-collar perspective. This
piece offered many characters that seemed very suited to their positions,
and you captured them all so nicely. The story of the herbist especially
touched me, because you did such a fantastic job of capturing what it would
be like to be deprived of your sight, but they were all very good. Reading
this story is what led me to "Fallen", and I never regretted taking the time
to read either of these pieces.

It amazes me when an author can create a world that is almost entirely
original, but yet feels very well integrated with canon. Aliana does that
here. We see glimpses of the Houses of Healing in _The Return of the King_,
of course, but our exposure is more or less limited to Ioreth and the
herb-master. Canon characters skirt along the edges of this story, but the
focus stays firmly on our cast of original characters -- Valacar, Elloth,
Beren, Laeron, and the others

There were some minor things that caused me confusion. For example, the Army
of the Dead seems to have reached Minas Tirith (making this story
movie!verse), but Elrohir and Elladan heal the Gondorians (which would
situate the tale in book!verse). However, there is enough redeeming
qualities to make me forget this discrepancy. I think my favourite
characteristic was how the author developed a sort of version of feminism,
about the place of women in a less domestic environment like the Houses of
Healing. I look forward to seeing where this story goes.

Each of these drabbles is very interesting. They are on different themes,
but somehow feel connected; they complement each other. I particularly liked
the one about Malbeth, and the talk about blind vs. dumb.
