see Frodo helping others instead of being helped by others during his stay

I think this was the second Thundera fic I had ever read, and when it came
up on FF.net, and I saw that Harad was going to be the major playing field,
I was very excited by the prospect of a story that would try to dig into the
problems that land would present for Gondor. The larger setting of the story
is the attempt by one particular tribe of Haradrim to gain mastery over the
rest, which means Gondor, a source of trade and power for the opposition,
must somehow be shaken loose. What better way than to first disgrace, and
then eliminate, the heads of state of Gondor and Rohan, then, thus showing
the other tribes the folly of alliance with the West? With that as the
background, obviously things go awry from nearly the moment Aragorn and
Éomer, with Legolas and Gimli in tow, set foot in Harad. The latter two
become pawns in the game, a position they had already accepted in an effort
to help their friends out, which complicates matters for everyone.
Thundera uses several characters as her eyes and ears, so we spend time in
Aragorn's head, in Éomer's, Legolas', Gimli's, Imrahil's, and several of the
OC Haradrim. One gets a strong sense that Thundera is paying a bit of a
tribute to "Dune" with this fic; while there's plenty of action, there are
also long introspection or discussion pieces. Some of these could use some
tightening, but by and large, the reader gets sucked in regardless. Fans of
Legolas and Gimli will be pleased to know those two are at the heart of the
story. Otherwise, I can but say "Save Dashnir!" and hope the fic will be
continued soon.

This story reminds me of nothing so much as The Three Trees meets the Ugly
Duckling, save that the unlikely subject of this story is a draught horse of
Rohan, Summerstraw, who has to make choice about what he will be rather than
having it imposed upon him. This story certainly fits, in its way, with the
(somewhat underwritten of necessity) theme 'valour without renown'.
Summerstraw doesn't go to the great battles, but fights his own for the sake
of his human family while all the warhorses are away in Gondor.

An excellent reversal of the usual tale of Berúthiel and her cats—one might
expect it would be Werecat who would find the means to do it without making
it feel contrived. The cats come off quite well, particularly Isilme in his
later, somewhat spooky days as the eyes and ears for the Queen, and some of
Tolkien's notes are put to good, creative use. Berúthiel does indeed come
off as a sympathetic character, although I think the cats retain their
properly enigmatic air, as of creatures that simply do not share human
concerns.Well done, Werecat!

son, and their new titles of "mother" and "father". Wonder and joy come up

warmth prevails over toil and reaffirms them in their love, that keeps them

author's note) that this was her first story written in the Lord of the
Rings fandom. If so, she is in good company with the likes of ErinRua's
"Last Grey Ship". And I do not hesitate -- in the slightest! -- to name this
story in the same breath with Erin's. This is a gapfiller, while the other
is set long after the Ring's destruction; this is novella length while
Erin's is multi-part but significantly shorter. But the two pieces have two
main things in common: both are built on tantalising hints left by Tolkien
(the former in the chapter of Fellowship of the Ring by the same name, the
latter in the Appendices), and both make me blush when I think of my own
early attempts.
Where to start on a piece like "While the Ring Went South"? Others might
easily comment on the many pranks Gimli and Legolas play on each other. I'm
sure poor Gimli must have been scared nearly witless by the arrow nailing
his beard to a tree, and Legolas tasted the aftertaste of the pipeweed Gimli
left in his water for hours. But they made me laugh to no end. Aragorn's
unrelenting patience in dealing with them and everyone else is beyond
admirable, and the hobbits are well-drawn. But I think what really struck me
was the characterisation of Boromir. Here is not a simple brute, or a
jingoistic general; I see a complex man, clearly a son of Denethor but oh so
different from his younger brother, proud but not prideful.
If this piece has a fault it would be that there was not enough build up to
the warg. After the fact (especially after the first was killed) I felt the
terror that many had for these beasts, but by then it was in many ways too
late. Until that point I wondered why the Fellowship was so scared of the
wargs. A little more "show don't tell" in the lead-up to the hunts would
make this piece as perfect as any fanfic can be.

chose to fill is particularly enigmatic, and this vignette fills it nicely.
I particularly like the mythic quality the author infused in this piece; it
does not cross the line by revealing too much. But the plot itself is so
well conceived, and the characterisations of minor characters only hinted at
in the body of Lord of the Rings only enriches it. (The author clearly knows
her Silmarillion, and while the piece is more or less comprehensible if one
only knows Lord of the Rings, it is incredibly enriched by knowledge of the
backstory that plays into the story.) Really, it's too hard to pick one
aspect that I like best!

am a tad biased, but I don't think that's the whole story. Gwynnyd has taken
two facts that most of us probably never thought twice about -- that both
Aragorn and Gilraen lived in Rivendell, and that Aragorn's identity was
successfully hidden -- and exposed the problem and this and fixed it.
Every one of her characters, both real and original, affected me strongly.
Gilraen is of course the key player, but even young Aragorn is darling.
Arathorn is definitely developed, and you can see why Gwynnyd's Gilraen
would love them. Halbeleg (an original character whose name I also used; in
Gwynnyd's stories this is Halbarad's father so no connection to my grandson
of Halbarad) is a man of action, hardened by necessity but not out of touch
with his feelings, and his caring and concern (and growing frustration!)
with his kinswoman. Both of their reactions are so understandable, and
Gilraen's reaction is extremely understandable.
And the Twins, the Twins... I cannot pinpoint why they are so damned sexy in
this piece. They are not behaving at all romantically, and I don't think you
even describe them physically. But this was probably the piece that made me
fall in love with them, and on more than just a physical level. There is
something so romantic and sweet in the way they relate to Areg. And
Gilraen's surprise when Elrond herself calls on her... well, you can
probably tell that I loved the whole thing from start to finish. As I said
in another review, your Gilraen and Forodwaith's are my favourite in the
fandom, and it speaks highly of this story that the other elements give
Gilraen a run for her money.

the Fellowship, not one of the many Elf-lords in Rivendell, or even Gandalf.
But it makes sense that Legolas might refuse an appeal to honour from
Elrond, but not an appeal to friendship from Aragorn. And the interaction
throughout was very nice.

Berúthiel does indeed come
off as a sympathetic character, although I think the cats retain their
properly enigmatic air, as of creatures that simply do not share human
concerns.Well done, Werecat!

author's note) that this was her first story written in the Lord of the
Rings fandom.
If this piece has a fault it would be that there was not enough build up to
the warg. After the fact (especially after the first was killed) I felt the
terror that many had for these beasts, but by then it was in many ways too
late. Until that point I wondered why the Fellowship was so scared of the
wargs. A little more "show don't tell" in the lead-up to the hunts would
make this piece as perfect as any fanfic can be.

should not die unaided, and bring us full circle to the simple regret that
he may have broken Theoden's commands. I understand that regret. And I
particularly liked how you use words that in less capable hands might seem
nonsense (such as "burn-freeze"), but here they seem to flow quite
naturally.

> · 2005-06-21 19:06:43 Score: 10This is quite possibly the most stunning piece of its length that I have
ever seen. I realise that I was one of the beta readers for it, so perhaps I
am a tad biased, but I don't think that's the whole story.
