Poor Legolas. You can just feel his unhappiness at the beginning - and this
is such a beautiful undertaking where his friends and family deal with the
issue of his separation from his father. Good for Gimli - his secret weapon
is singularly effective. (Vilya - just a piece of jewellery! Ha! And not
particularly tasteful at that!) And the real heartstring-tugger - the
ancient statue of Elbereth - because Legolas sees that as the promise that
Thranduil will come. It's a lovely story. And very well written, to boot.

wait in the hope that Frodo will be healed - and the dread that he will not.

Beyond brilliant. History Lessons is just a fascinating read on more than
one level - quite apart from discovering the history of the first age, which
is presented in a manner that is approachable and enthralling, the third age
background with Elrond, Celebrian, Elladan and Elrohir and the rest is
simply delightful. This is a story that can be read and read again with an
equal amount of enjoyment each time. Nilmandra should feel really proud of
what she has produced here.

Counsel from an Ent they would do well to remember. 'Fair begetters of

fill the world with the echoes of their lineage - it's just beautifully put.
This is musical to read and so well-expressed. Lovely.

Now, how many superlatives can I come up with here? I love the
characterisation - of all the characters - but Elrond shines like his father
the star. He is just so gorgeously heroic / paternal / lordly / as a friend
/ a son-in-law / a lover. It's no wonder the Third Age worked out in the end
- thanks largely to his efforts. The descriptions and activities of the
second age are brilliant - and very illuminating and then the family
interactions of the third age are great. All in all, and I think I've said
this before, well written, well plotted, well structured, well characterised
and extremely informative. Loved it when I read it first and love reading it
just as much now.

Why? Well, for one thing Legolas is at a really interesting stage of
learning - grown up, but only just - and he's learning things at a
tremendous rate. Mostly from the corner of his eye (laundry). He's also just
coming to terms with the joys of being Beliond's charge. And a Beliond that
isn't really too keen on the whole keeper thing. And I just love it.

And the elflings are adorable. The story, however, is getting even more
serious - and dangers are clearly approaching far too close. The
characterisation is excellents - and I am even fond enough of some of the
less-clearly-heroic to want them to be redeemed. I can't wait for more of
