I liked how you had Pippin anxious to get to Cormallen here. It really fit
the impetuous nature I imagine he had as a tween. And your description of
Frodo was heart-breaking. Gimli was also very well-written. It seemed a bit
too short, though, and the ending felt too abrupt.

There's something disturbing about this level of helplessness, and perhaps
it is because something along these lines must be one of the primordial deep
fears ingrained in every woman's psyche: the murderer on the doorstep who
takes the children and then has everything set to have his way with you.
Nimloth can't do very much and is really rather pathetic—she is hardly
effective as a warrior, she cannot save her children, and she certainly
doesn't deal well in threatening promises. All she can do is refuse her
attackers any knowledge of the Silmarils, deny her forgiveness, and die.
She's even reduced to begging her murderers to save her children. For the
angst-lover who perhaps is a little more removed from the wretched
helplessness of most women in fantasy novels to say nothing of real life,
it's a nicely written gap-filler.

Ah, the author of "Blood and Warm Blankets" delivers with another lovely
subversion of the Maeglin-Idril-Tuor tragedy, though without the biting
humor this time. Shifting the point of view to a young and innocent
Eärendil's gives Maeglin a very different face and feel, allowing his love
to show through for once in a manner that we recognize as love—this of
course makes the anger and jealousy that warp it more effective in the end.
The move at the end to an older Eärendil's point of view, where his wife's
leap from the tower seems too much a parallel to Maeglin's fall for him to
forebear comment is nicely done.

I would call these successful experiments. The first quasi-villanelle
intrigues me most for the inclusion of the line "a fragile truth amidst a
thousand lies"—without it, it could be simply an angsty poem, but with it,
we have whole new dimensions. One never knows precisely whose lies are meant
(and there's always the possibility the 'who' might change according to the
stanza) or what their content might be, and it introduces an interesting
note of tension into Denethor's relationship with his wife. Is it simply
that he knows she's weakening, despite efforts to deceive him and others? Or
is there something more at work here?

The second villanelle lacks that note of falsity, and is more
straightforwardly an account of Denethor's plunge towards the emotional
abyss, but that final, crossed out line does so much work, it's practically
ridiculous as well as dead on—a lovely representation of that wretched "ink
blot" that refuses to be erased, forcing the author to recognize the truth
of himself despite his efforts at casting his fear into a less obvious, more
controllable form. Can we say failed sublimation? Well done!

In bookverse of course Frodo moved to Crickhollow, and Crickhollow was
destroyed by the Nazgul. As bad as that was, Frodo never had to dea with
spoilt milk and moldy bread and moth-infested sheets. In movieverse of
course he did, but that thought had never occurred to me. You did a good job
of getting across the nitty-gritty of that situation here. Beyond that, you
made sense of a section of movieverse that always seemed to me like it was
full of plot holes. You explained some things that always bothered me (such
as how Frodo knew he could sail West), and connected it with bookverse in
other regards -- i.e. getting Sam and Rosie into Bag End. The Quenya script
on Elrond's letter was a particularly nice touch. All around, this was a
very interesting and entertaining reconciliation of bookverse and
movieverse.

way's Frodo's resolution felt a bit hasty.

Daeron was already at the peak of my favourite characters list - his dry wit
is just the best - but this tale told from the point of view of so many of
the stars is just delightful. Combine that with obnoxious 'teenage' elves in
the woods, genetically engineered spiders and a screwed-up romance and you
have just so many beautifully combined elements that make this an excellent
story. Daeron is still my favourite, but I have to say that Seregon and
Aldamir are running him close - and I'm putting in a request for a story
that shows more of the flirtatious Erelas. This story is a real joy.

Faramir's care here for Callon was beautifully told. Especially the way you
got that across by giving the boy's age as "eleven and a quarter". That was
such a childish way of thinking in things, yet the boy was still ready to do
his duty. He couldn't be more than two or three years older than Bergil at
the point of this story. The injury of Hallon was also well-told, but I
think the part about his son, the useful task Faramir found for him and the
quiet bravery of him, is what really made this story for me.
